GROW by Tina Manzer Fahy-Williams Publishing
Ontario County is home to more than 850 farms that raise a diverse mix of livestock and grow a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat, cabbage and other vegetables. There are dairy, beef, sheep, goat, and alpaca farms. Orchards produce apples, stone fruits and some nuts; and strawberries, blueberries, and bramble berries thrive here. Area vineyards have helped to make the Finger Lakes a center for wine production since the 1860s, and New York State as a whole produces 20 percent of all the maple syrup in the country, second only to Vermont. Community residents reap the rewards of our stellar growing conditions in so many ways. The local farming industry is the backbone of our economy. Then there’s the bounty to enjoy, including the parade of fruits and vegetables maturing in succession from May through November. Finally, our scenic farmland joins the lake in providing a sublime backdrop to our daily lives during all seasons. CanandaiguaChamber.com

“T
he Finger Lakes region has some of the best soils in the world,” Russ Welser told me. He ought to know – the senior educator at the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) in Canandaigua has been teaching us about Ontario County’s natural resources for 43 years. To emphasize the significance of his statement, he repeated it. “We have all this water access, plus some of the best soils in the world!” If it were up to Russ, every inch of land in the region would be farmed. Buildings – including our homes – would be relegated to areas less agriculturally endowed. As it stands, 39 percent of the land area in Ontario County is classified “Prime Farmland” by New York State’s land grant university Cornell, in Ithaca. Not only does the land have adequate moisture, drainage, soil depth and texture, it is not susceptible to erosion or flooding, and can sustain high-yield production with minimal fertilizer and energy requirements. “More than 83,000 additional acres of farmland are highly productive, and are of statewide importance,” says Cornell’s Ontario County profile. “Farmland resources here are of the highest quality in the Northeast.”
Easy access to experts Part of the appeal of farming here is access to Cornell’s agricultural insight. “The mission of each CCE office is to take the applied research from the university’s College of Agriculture & Life Sciences and the College of Human
Ecology and get it out to the community – to whoever needs to understand it and adapt it to what they are growing,” explains Russ. “It’s totally unbiased, research-based information.” In 1914, the Smith-Lever Act established a national Cooperative Extension Service that provided outreach programs through land-grant universities beyond their campuses. The goal was to educate rural Americans about advances in agricultural practices and technology. New York State has 55 CCEs – one in every county and the five boroughs of New York City. Unlike CCEs in some other states, New York’s operate autonomously to provide programming and resources tailored to the needs of their communities. While regional teams of CCE agricultural specialists help commercial farmers, Russ is a generalist who fields questions on soil, pruning trees and shrubs, lawn care, landscaping, garden pests, and new invasive species. In the Ontario County office, he is one of 11 staffers that range from a Cornell vegetable specialist to the director of the area’s 4-H Camp. “The farm-oriented calls I get are from beginning farmers; individuals who just bought 10 acres or 50 acres, and want to get their soil analyzed,” he explains. “They might ask about what they should grow, where they get funding, and what first step they should take.” Russ reports that the calls have been coming more frequently in the past six years, which indicates a growing trend. “We’ve seen an increase in the number of people who
“Happiness Shared is the Flower” Wendy Rockcastle from Rockcastle Florist discusses the when, why and how of sending flowers. Be spontaneous Give a gift of flowers for no other reason than, “I was thinking about you today.” Allow an experienced floral designer to simply create an arrangement with the freshest blooms in stock. The gift will mean so much more because it is unexpected.
Everyone qualifies A bouquet can express a range of feelings, from romantic and thoughtful to friendly and fun. You’ll probably want to reserve classic red roses for your love, but blooms in bright colors make everyone smile. The most important consideration? Choose something that reminds you of the recipient. 12

want to get into small-farm situations. One family member may have a full-time job, while the other does some sort of farming for additional income. In other cases, they’re looking to be more self-sufficient in terms of their food supply. It’s a lifestyle choice. ” Within the last month, he said, he’s fielded at least three calls from beginner farmers. One was from a young couple who just moved here from New Jersey and bought a little land to farm. Another woman who recently purchased acreage wanted to discuss whether the soil and other conditions on her property are suitable for what she wants to grow. Not all beginning farmers who come here are new to Ontario County says Russ. Some were raised here, moved away, and came back; and some have other connections to the area. “We have also heard that during the pandemic, people suddenly decided they needed to leave denser living spaces like New York City and settle in more rural communities,” says Russ. “I don’t have data to support that idea, but I understand that’s happening in the Hudson Valley region.”

Get more bloom for your buck Roses are usually a great value during the summer, but in the winter, mixed bouquets of seasonal flowers like mums, hydrangea, thistle, Gerbera Daisies and sunflowers may be a more affordable way to go.
Never boring/always memorable No one ever forgets the experience of receiving flowers.
Men like flowers, too More than 60 percent of men would like to receive flowers on Valentine’s Day, says a survey by the Society of American Florists. But any occasion is appropriate, including a job change or promotion, his birthday, new digs, or as a host gift. Take your cues from the occasions he may have sent you flowers. Studies have shown that men respond best to bright, powerful colors, but don’t be tempted to use traditional “masculine” colors like red, blue and yellow only. The best-looking arrangements use a curated color palette, so let your floral designer use his or her skills. If you’re not sure about flowers, anything green and living is always a safe bet.

The unique event offers networking, panel discussions, guest speakers, and skill-building sessions on topics like, “Agri-Culinary Ownership Options,” “A Restaurant Trend Forecast,” and “Access to Funding.” Participants include local farmers and owners of agricultural businesses; hospitality, food and beverage entrepreneurs; and professional service businesses. The event culminates with a farm-to-table meal prepared by local chefs. “Changing consumer demands, current and emerging legislation, and dynamic market conditions require thoughtful and inspired plans on behalf of producers, wholesalers, restaurateurs and allied professionals,” says Ethan Fogg, Canandaigua Chamber President and CEO. “As an annual gathering, Alfresco FLX gives the local restaurant and food industry the opportunity to grow together as we address challenges and identify opportunities.” The 2020 event was a success, despite its move from in-person to online, Ethan explains. This year’s event, scheduled for August, will likely be presented in a hybrid format. Information on topics and presenters will be available at AlfrescoFLX.com.
Support for home gardeners
“As an activity, home gardening just exploded worldwide last year,” Russ says. “Those of us who have always gardened understand its benefits, both physical and mental. Being outside and working in the soil gives us a sense of satisfaction. It makes us feel good to care for plants, and it’s fulfilling and entertaining to watch a garden grow. During the pandemic isolation, gardening gave us a sense of accomplishment at a time when we really needed to feel like we were achieving something.” Home gardens also eased concerns over food security as lockdowns slowed the harvesting and distribution of some crops. Fruit and vegetable seed sales soared – U.S. seed company W. Atlee Burpee & Co sold more seed last March

Relax and enjoy the outdoors at home Last year, the pandemic shutdown forced garden centers like family owned Mayflowers Nursery to pivot right before their busiest season. Owner Charlie May stepped up to the plate with Easter plants on April 4, plus a new online ordering system with curbside pickup and a host of delivery options that stretched to four counties. “Customers had been asking for online ordering pre-pandemic, but with COVID, we really didn’t know what to expect,” he says. “It was a pleasant surprise to be busier than we thought we’d be.” Demand was high for vegetable seeds, vegetable plants, herbs, and fruit trees, he says. In the beginning, there was less of a call for Mayflowers’ bread-and-butter items: bedding plants, hanging baskets, perennials, and bushes and shrubs for landscaping, but by the time summer arrived, people were ready to transform their backyards into garden getaways garnished with casual furniture and low-maintenance containers of hibiscus, climbing clematis and cherry tomato plants. This year, Charlie is expanding his inventory to meet the need for outdoor comfort with umbrella tables, lounge-y patio seating with loveseats and low tables, small eucalyptus dining sets, and several kinds of fire pits.
than any time in its 144-year history, reports Reuters. Sensing that food shortages would cause a homegardening spike, Russ launched an online course last year called “Just Plant It: Victory Gardening” with resources, activities and discussions on growing vegetables, herbs and fruits. It’s back this year by popular demand, with monthly Zoom sessions from April through September. Featured
topics include soil preparation, weeding and watering, fall planting, harvesting, freezing/canning, and “putting your garden to bed.” In a normal year, the CCE conducts a variety of programs for the gardening public. Your next pet? A Huacaya alpaca is not a teddy bear, but with its dense, crimped fleece, it looks like one. When you see the herd at Lazy Acres Farm in Bloomfield, you may be tempted to just give one a hug, but don’t. Instead, consider the soft embrace of a warm alpaca sweater. “Alpaca fiber has more thermal capacity than almost any other animal fiber,” explains Mark Gilbride, who owns the farm with his wife, Sharon. “It contains microscopic air pockets, so while a sweater is lightweight, it has high insulation value. And it won’t itch!” The Gilbrides and their five children have been raising alpacas for 21 years, and point out that the animals are ‘user friendly’ when compared to other livestock. “They graze grass down evenly without destroying the root system, and their soft padded feet don’t chew up the pasture. Their waste is easy to clean up because they consolidate it into one area of their paddock.” Alpacas give more than they receive, Mark adds. “They’re calm, fun, good around children, and are easily trained to lead. For all of those reasons and then some, they’ve become the new elite pet.” If you want one, or some, he can help. “We sell a wide range of animals, from ‘show’ quality to pet quality. Our farm startup packages include our guidance and assistance from the very beginning to long after our customers receive their first animal.” Stop in for a visit. As an agritourism site, Lazy Acres welcomes the public, including school children and bus-tour groups. Mark and his family are glad to share their insight about the farming lifestyle, livestock care, and alpaca products. The farm also offers birthday parties and alpaca yoga classes. Their store is open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

by a team of Master Gardeners; specially trained volunteers who work in partnership with the CCE office to extend information throughout their communities. The program originated in Washington State in response to a surge in horticultural interest from home gardeners in 1972. To help meet the information demand, the WSU Cooperative Extension trained amateur gardeners in return for a commitment to share what they learned with others in the community. The Ontario County office has offered regional Master Gardener training since 1982. The biennial course – available this year from August through October – consists of 60 hours of instruction. Each Master Gardener, then, must perform 100 hours of volunteer service over a two-year period. There are 44 Master Gardeners in Ontario County, Russ reports.
Preserving and restoring native flora Now in its 147th year, the Canandaigua Botanical Society is the second-oldest botanical society in continuous existence in the United States. Not to be confused with a garden club, the botanical society’s members support efforts to preserve and restore the region’s native plant species. “We love gardens, but we like to say we appreciate and study the ones God has made,” explains the group’s coordinator Laura Oimette. Its founding members were avid botanists who sought out and studied all types of plants growing in the local area. The extensive collection of pressed specimens they prepared is housed in the herbarium at Finger Lakes Community College. Current members include “wildflower enthusiasts and wild plant connoisseurs, and fern fanciers and mushroom aficionados,” explains its website. “We all enjoy leisurely paced hikes, which allow time to see what is underfoot, overhead and all around us when we really look.” Although the roster of current members looks “quite senior,” says Laura, all ages are welcome. Her family membership, $10 per year, means that she and her children can enjoy the group’s nature walks together. “As we walk along with the members of all age groups, I watch

Cabbage country We’re in the middle of it; a cabbage-farm cluster that stretches from Lake Ontario to the northern shores of the Finger Lakes. If New York had an official state vegetable it should be cabbage, although its many merits, compared to sweet corn and the onion, for instance, have always been overlooked. But not by Clifford Kunes. In 1969, the Seneca Castle farmer developed a self-propelled cabbage harvester, the world’s first, and then followed up with beet harvesters and fruit-picking machines. Today his son Michael leads Castle Harvester Metal Fabricators, and the company’s focus has shifted to metal fabrication for food processing companies and other manufacturers. While the business still resides in its original location, it has undergone eight building expansions in the last 50-plus years. When Whole Foods Grocers announced its highly anticipated food trends list for 2021, sauerkraut topped the list, along with superfoods, probiotics and broths. “The more we learn about the importance of wellness – including immune support, gut health, and keeping stress at bay – the more we strive to reap all of the above from food,” reports Real Simple. Like other fermented vegetables, sauerkraut has probiotic benefits that help support a healthy immune system. And this year, we’re all about good health.

the personalities bloom along with the plants.” Weather permitting, hikes are scheduled two to three times a month, and take the botanists as far afield as Mendon Ponds Park in Rochester and as near as Lagoon Park on Canandaigua’s Lakeshore Drive. It’s where the society’s restoration work is currently focused. Their mission is to rid the nature preserve of invasive buckthorn. European buckthorn is a tall, understory shrub or small tree brought to North America in the early 1800s as an ornamental shrub. The woody plant escaped from landscaped yards long ago and invaded natural areas. “You can’t just pull it out and it will never come back,” Laura explains. “It just re-sprouts, and it’s a prolific spreader. You have to destroy it with an herbicide.” Buckthorn leafs out earlier in the spring and holds its leaves later into fall so it continues to grow when most native species are dormant. When combined with its
Sonnenberg, one of the most treasured landmarks of the Finger Lakes Region, is just a three-block walk from Canandaigua’s Main Street. The former estate of New York City banker Frederick Ferris Thompson and his wife Mary Clark Thompson is a carefully preserved remnant of the Gilded Age, with formal and informal gardens, a Victorian mansion, and a greenhouse complex created by Lord & Burnham. As a New York State Historic Park, Sonnenberg welcomes 35,000 visitors each year. When Thompson purchased the property as a summer home in 1963, it featured a single brick farmhouse. The Queen Anne-style mansion was built between 1885 and 1887. Among its 40 rooms are a great hall, billiard and trophy rooms, library, drawing room and dining room. Special

plentiful seed production, buckthorn can quickly dominate a natural area if not kept in check. About six years ago, it was close to overrunning Lagoon Park, threatening the native plant life that provides food for insects, birds and other organisms. That’s when a group of volunteers – Canandaigua Botanical Society members, local Scouts, and others – first removed it and replanted native species in the buckthorn’s place. Volunteer leader Jim Engel, owner of White Oak Nursery, reports that stubborn plants continue to linger, so the eradication process will resume this year. The Canandaigua Botanical Society has raised $1,600 (with the help of the Master Gardeners’ annual fundraising plant sale) to support the efforts. It hopes to add more native plants to help create a healthier ecosystem. Donations continue to be accepted; email canandaiguabotanical@ gmail.com for more information.
events during the garden season are held on the wide porches of the veranda, which encircles two sides of the home. Sonnenberg’s nine formal gardens bear the imprint of Mary Clark Thompson, whose ideas came from her many trips to Europe and Asia. After her husband died in 1899, she and Boston landscape architect Ernest Bowditch created the gardens, a task that involved the help of hundreds of workers from 1902 to 1919. The Italian Garden, seen here, showcases an elaborate “carpet bedding” style with some 15,000 red and gold annuals in each of four sunken beds. From the vantage point of the mansion’s library or the balcony directly above, you look down on the garden to the 16th-century Italian well-head and the Fountain of Hercules.

If
small business owners learned one thing in 2020, it’s that staying afloat during a reality-altering worldwide pandemic is not for the faint of heart. They have been, and continue to be, fiercely tested. So how are local business owners holding up? Downtown Manager Denise Chaapel of the Canandaigua Business Improvement District (BID) said they’re faring well, overall. “The Small Business Association’s Payment Protection Plan (PPP) and local banks like Canandaigua National Bank & Trust and Lyons National Bank have been rock stars for the majority of our downtown businesses to help them cope, financially, through this,” she said. While some businesses are still struggling, others report record sales.

Canandaigua’s downtown manager shares how local businesses survive and even thrive during a pandemic “It just gives me goosebumps to think about it,” said Chaapel. “Our community has totally embraced ‘shopping local.’ Because of that, these businesses are still here.”
Drawing attention Canandaigua’s small business successes have not gone unnoticed. “We’ve seen an incredible influx of Connecticut, New York City, Long Island and Boston business owners wanting to move here,” said Chaapel. “And I’ve met with multiple people who can work from home but are looking for offices on a second or
third floor, so their home isn’t their workplace 24/7.” Rochester businesses are taking notice as well, after seeing the successes in Canandaigua with The Lake House and The Canandaigua Finger Lakes Resort, she said. “It’s beautiful here, and they’re looking for quality of life,” said Chaapel. “COVID has made a lot of people reevaluate their lives and how they’re living it.” It’s been especially exciting to hear from store and restaurant owners about record sales, and that tourism actually started a month early this season, she said. “Over the last year, a lot of people
from Buffalo, from Pennsylvania, who would have gone to Boston, or New York City, or would even have gotten on an airplane, instead chose Canandaigua in the center of the Finger Lakes to vacation for a few overnights. It’s been fabulous.” Chaapel said Canandaigua hasn’t yet lost any businesses or business owners specifically to COVID-19, though there has been some transition. “A year ago at the holidays, we were boasting 100-percent occupancy. We currently have several openings in our downtown district, with four grand openings in April for three

Superstars COVID-19 has hamstrung small businesses across the globe. But which local superstars have successfully re-envisioned themselves in order to survive? Topping that long list are area restaurant owners. “A lot of their business plans were not delivery or takeout,” said Chaapel. “Think of Simply Crêpes or Bon Ami or Thai by Night. They pivoted and started doing takeout. Some even started with delivery or third-party delivery.” In front of many of downtown Canandaigua’s 20-some restaurants, parking spaces were immediately blocked out for curbside pickup only, which “has been huge,” Chaapel said. “Restaurants really pivoted, but they’re still struggling. Finding help right now is a huge obstacle for all of these employers. Whether it’s because people are not comfortable going back to work yet, or they’re not interested in those jobs, the situation has become very difficult.” To help boost local restaurant patronage last summer, Canandaigua’s Downtown District, in cooperation with the BID and the Local Development Corporation (LDC), invested $12,000 to purchase tables, umbrellas and chairs for a temporary venue called Central on Main. Sandwiched between Simply Crêpes and the Chamber of Commerce, the COVID-compliant gathering space featured live music sponsored by local organizations, and a beer and wine garden. Patrons could place their orders by phone and have it delivered to their table or pick it up. “In five weekends we seated more than 2,500 people. Based on a very conservative dollar amount, we estimated we put more than $30,000 back into downtown restaurants,” said Chaapel. “We were seeing regulars from Buffalo and Rochester, plus locals, every weekend. People would come up and say they just did not feel comfortable dining in. This was the perfect alternative and a huge success story that we hope continues for many years to come.” Recently, the city received a $470,000 grant through the New York Main Street program that will help develop Central on Main into a permanent area with a pergola and greenery. It will also fund second- and third-floor renovations of historic Main Street buildings into more residential and office spaces.

Strength through crisis There’s a lot to admire about small business owners who reinvent their life’s work in a matter of weeks in order to help it survive. Chaapel had a front row seat as many of her colleagues did just that. “The inner strength that so many of them had! There were businesses that were losing 401Ks...” she said. “A lot of them thought they were going to open right back up and everything would be back to normal. When they realized they weren’t going to be able to bring longtime employees back, there was such an emotional component. That’s where I really saw inner strength.” And that’s when business owners started banding together as property owners, retail and restaurant owners. “The BID would bring them together via ZOOM to talk about what was going on,” said Chaapel. “We sent out weekly or semi-weekly newsletters with current information from the governor, the county director of health, Finger Lakes Visitors Connection, the New York State Restaurant Association. We were feeding this information continuously. It was such a success that we’re continuing it.”

The power of community Local community tourism within a one-hour radius is why these businesses are still here. “Our business owners are the threads that keep our community together, and people chose to support them,” Chaapel said. “And I can tell you, there were some cases where customers would just walk in and hand business owners $100 or more in cash and say ‘I want to make sure you’re still here.’ At the holidays, they would just walk from door to door. “We are going to need that, quite honestly, for the next six months,” she continued. “Historically, our biggest obstacle in Canandaigua has been getting locals to ‘shop local’ and ‘support local.’ There’s a mindset that Amazon is going to put all the small businesses out of business, but that’s not the case. People want to get to know their business owners. That is what it’s about – the relationships these business owners have built with their customers.”

Priority – Creating economic opportunities along the 332 corridor Residents and visitors traveling in from the New York State Thruway enter the Canandaigua community via the strikingly beautiful NYS 332 corridor, and town leadership has identified a series of potential redevelopment opportunities along that route. The LDC is set to support local leaders and property owners in identifying potential investors and supporting smart, complementary development along the corridor. These priorities reinforce the LDC’s overarching strategic imperatives of • promoting and reinforcing downtown as a destination; • job creation, retention, and expansion; • connecting downtown Canandaigua to the lakefront; • protecting the ecological health of Canandaigua Lake;
• promoting and protecting agricultural operations and • optimizing the lakefront and lake access. The LDC is energized and excited to build on the progress made in its startup phase, to steward economic opportunity and realize the community’s vision of an unmatched quality of life and vibrant culture for all. ever before has “big city” health care been as essential for Ontario County residents as it is today. Convenient, round-the-clock access to high quality, state-of-the-art medical services from the natural beauty of a semi-rural setting – it’s a gift easily overlooked. Until you need it. For more than a decade, Ontario County Public Health Director Mary Beer has helped lead the charge for a healthier community, most recently in the fight against COVID-19. Through the pandemic’s escalating challenges, she’s been reminded more than ever of the region’s rich healthcare resources. “We’re perfectly situated in terms of our location,” said Beer. “We have three hospitals within our county – two are affiliated with very large systems and the specialty healthcare

that comes with them. It’s really a treasure for us, and the care is excellent. When you’re ill, it’s difficult to travel, and who wants to drive an hour when you’re not feeling well?” As COVID-19 surged, county residents have had ready access to the excellent care that was needed. And while more vaccines are being administered at multiple locations like county and state clinics, hospitals and pharmacies, Beer says there’s still a long way to go. Regionally, Ontario County has the highest percentage of adults 18 and older who are eligible to receive the vaccine. As of April 13, it also had the highest percentage of people who had received it. Beyond COVID-19, the county’s location gives residents access to next-level tertiary care, she said. Emergency rooms that can handle acute trauma, ambulance services and air transport services like Mercy Flight in Canandaigua give people in medical crisis a huge advantage. “The farther away you are from those centers, the more challenging it is,” she said.
Responding to COVID-19
County-wide, residents have stepped up commendably. “Our citizens have been really good about working as a community to do the best we can, to follow the rules, to wear the masks, to social distance,” said Beer. “This speaks to a community of people who respect each other; one that is trying to protect itself and others.” But the acts of selflessness go well beyond CDC protocols, she said. “It’s amazing to me the number of people who are willing to volunteer throughout this pandemic,” said Beer. “They’ve come out of the woodwork to deliver meals, help with vaccine clinics, help with the Office for the Aging and in food pantries. The care people have provided to their neighbors is phenomenal.”

vaccination, she said. “We really did put as much information out there as possible,” said Beer. “We did the best we could to clarify and help the community understand what guidance was coming down from the state and what it meant. “We’re also getting vaccines in people’s arms,” she continues. “This is the first time we’ve operated drivethrough clinics, and it’s just amazing to see how smoothly they go. People are in and out in 25 minutes, and never
have to get out of their car. In a matter of a few hours we are able to vaccinate up to 1,100 people, depending on how much vaccine the state gives us.” Additional popup clinics in Geneva address equity and underserved populations, including African American and Latino communities. “We make sure they’re served and not left behind because of transportation issues,” said Beer.

Challenges
What pandemic-related hurdles have been the most difficult to overcome? “I don’t have a department of hundreds,” said Beer. “My team is absolutely great, and the proof is in the pudding when you go through an experience like this. It’s been a boatload of work, and they still came in happily every day. Some of us have worked seven days a week for hours and hours, many without a vacation.” Beer said she’s grateful to the county’s Board of Supervisors who voted to supply her department with additional staff; and to employees of other departments who have stepped up and pitched in. “It’s been a long, long year,
but a true collaboration,” said Beer. Another challenge has been the constant state of flux in information. “Things shift from being black and white to being very fluid,” said Beer. “You need to be able to turn on a dime based on what science is coming up with, what data is coming in, and what guidance is coming from the state and CDC. The announcements made in a press conference come at one pace, but the guidance about those announcements is slow in coming.” Another huge challenge has been the tidal wave of legwork that occurs when one person has been exposed and the people around them must be protected. “Ninetynine percent of the residents are so cooperative and

National Accreditation
In 2020, Ontario County Public Health received national accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board, the nonprofit organization that aims to improve and protect the health of the public by advancing the quality and performance of governmental public health agencies in the U.S. and abroad. What does this mean to Ontario County residents? “It’s important because it makes us accountable for providing the same level of public health services no matter how big your county is,” said Beer. “There’s the same level of expectation. The standards are very high and it raises the bar for your department.” The application for accreditation was submitted in cooperation with other area health departments (in Steuben, Seneca, Schuyler,
Wayne and Yates counties), making it the very first and only regional accreditation in the United States. Its timing put each of those counties’ public health departments well ahead of the curve when COVID-19 gained traction. It was essential that Ontario County Public Health continue to strengthen and improve its services, performance and effectiveness, Beer said. Because the national accreditation effort was well underway prior to March 2020, OCPH was already poised, equipped and more ready than ever to respond. “It took us five years to do this, to put new processes into place and tweak others,” said Beer. “It was definitely worth the effort and we’re very proud of those efforts.”
understanding of what we are trying to do,” said Beer. “But you can’t let the critics stop you. You have to do the best you can with the information you have at the time.” That said, the flood of tangible affirmations for OCPH employees has been truly heartwarming. “The gratitude that’s been expressed for my staff is so meaningful,” said Beer. “The support from the community and from board members – the flowers, candy, lunches – the outpouring of appreciation has meant so much.”
Vulnerable populations
How are school-aged children faring through the COVID crisis? Surprisingly well, said Beer. It’s been very difficult to do online work, and many parents want their kids back in school, she said. But it’s also been amazing that the children are better at masking than the adults. “The schools have done a really good job of stopping

the spread,” said Beer. “We work with school nurses and superintendents – it’s been a lot of work but they’ve been enormously cooperative. They have such care for these children and they’re doing the best they can.” The biggest challenge currently is clusters of sports teams that keep breaking out. On the other end of the spectrum, Ontario County’s large population of senior citizens “has been very diligent about following rules,” said Beer. “But the sad part is the isolation. It’s been a challenge in terms of mental health. When your parents are ill, they need you to advocate for them, but when you’re not allowed to go to the hospital or nursing home, it’s heart-wrenching.” In fact, the toll on mental health countywide “has been terrible,” Beer said. “Our number of overdose deaths was down in 2019 and in 2020 it got worse again,” she said. “We can’t even hug each other. But at least we have technology today. Telehealth has been a tremendous help. We do what we can do.”
The upside
“As challenging as this is for healthcare workers, this is what we signed up for,” said Beer. “We knew this pandemic was possible.” “And there’s something to be said for resilience. Because we care about each other, we have a culture of compassion. We find our joy in simple things. Working together is what got us through and still gets us through.” And the bonus after months and months of working toward containment: finally being able to administer vaccines. “There’s nothing more fun than running a vaccine clinic,” said Beer. “It’s an absolute joy. To see the team, to see how smoothly it runs … we have fun and, oh my, it’s a joy. At the end of the day you’re exhausted, and people are so appreciative. That just lifts your spirit.” Beer said she continues to be grateful to area residents for their cooperation. “Hang in there,” she said. “We will get there. Take the vaccine. If not for yourself, for your family, for your community. It’s safe. It’s important.” 36

Despite a pandemic and lockdown, the library was able to raise enough funds to expand its WiFi capacity. When people headed back to the building on Main Street, they could connect to the internet whenever they needed from anywhere on
Small stories of our community that, together, present the big picture library property. A contingency budget and updated policies to sustain operations were approved by the library’s Board of Trustees to ensure that the building was also a safe place when it re-opened. As more people turned to books and media for comfort and information last year, Wood Library initiated curbside delivery service and created opportunities for people to connect in meaningful ways. Even when the library was closed for a period of time last spring, staff responded to questions, supported patrons, and fulfilled requests.
Central on Main, a six-week initiative last fall that transformed a downtown parking lot into a vibrant outdoor dining venue, was a hit with patrons who gathered to enjoy meals from local restaurants. This April, the Canandaigua City Council voted unanimously to keep Central on Main going through October 2021. Plans include expanding the concept to include

Last year, the space allowed for approximately 100 socially distanced diners. After finding a table, they could check in at the Wine & Beer Bar at Simply Crêpes next door to grab a drink and food guide, which featured all the choices from participating restaurants. Once patrons made a food selection, they could scan a QR code and order online, or place their order by phone. They needed to include their table number at Central on Main, where their food would be delivered from whatever restaurant they chose. A party of four, for instance, could potentially receive meals from four different restaurants! Poor weather closed the space after five weeks, and logistics and winter kept it from reopening. People in the community and regulars from out of town have missed it. “It was a great addition and amenity to downtown,”
Mosaic Health in Rushville provides medical and dental care to generations of patients and families from across the Finger Lakes Region. Many of its patients are employed by the region’s robust tourist and agricultural industries. The center boasts a rich history. In 1970, the original Rushville Health Center opened in response to the growing need for primary care for underserved groups. It served the surrounding communities of Geneva, Canandaigua, and Penn Yan. It was staffed by volunteers and all the supplies and equipment were donated. The center operated out of a small house six months of the year, but in its fifth year it opened year-round. It remained a source of free care for low income families and others who had no access to primary care. In 1982, it began billing for services and treating anyone who needed care. After the community raised $600,000 for the cause, it moved to its current location in 1996, where a large migrant population received care for many years.

A Verdin Adagio II Carillon has been installed at the historic Woodlawn Chapel in the City of Canandaigua. With its sophisticated digital recording technology and large roof-mounted speakers, it sends the sound of cast-bronze bells playing the Westminster chimes at the top of each hour every day, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The carillon was a generous gift from an anonymous donor, and was accompanied by a catalog of 800 different musical selections that range from Beethoven to Sondheim, and from “Taps” to “Amazing Grace,” plus liturgical bells and seasonal favorites. It is one of the latest developments in a years-long process to restore, reopen, and draw people back to the chapel. Built in 1909 by Canandaigua philanthropist Mary Clark Thompson, the chapel is located on the grounds of the 80-acre Woodlawn Cemetery on North Pearl Street. It’s constructed of limestone and Medina sandstone, with imported stained glass and a pipe organ built by the Massachusetts firm Hook & Hastings. The building was designed by Boston architect Francis R. Allen, known for his work in the Gothic Revival style of architecture. Woodlawn Chapel was busy for five decades but as funerary customs changed, it was under-utilized and fell into disrepair. The chapel closed to the public in 1958. But in 2013, after years of neglect, a restoration project was spearheaded by Woodlawn Superintendent Doug Stone and the Canandaigua Cemetery Association. Today, the chapel can be rented for weddings, christenings, baby and bridal showers and other special occasions. It is a non-denominational “spiritual” place welcome to all. Efforts to restore its custom-made pipe organ will soon be completed by Parsons Pipe Organ Builders, a world-renowned company founded in 1914 that also happens to be located in Canandaigua.

Snippets boost needed to make things more accessible and interpreters more visible to those who are Deaf and hard of hearing, and to the general public,” explains Dr. Marla Broetz, assistant professor of ASL – English (AEI) Interpreting at the college. “Interpreters have been around for decades, but they weren’t as visible on television and to the general public as they have been during the pandemic.” The exposure is good news for Keuka’s ASL/ AEI students and graduates. Dr. Broetz believes that the need at the highest levels (the White House) will trickle down to local mayors’ offices and school board meetings. But not everyone who can sign is an interpreter, she adds. When we see interpreters on TV, many of us assume that they are signing a message word for word, but that’s not the case. The profession requires training, and certification that the interpreter is fluent and capable of translating from one language to the other. “Our students have to understand that we have a high expectation of them and their abilities,” says Dr. Broetz.

“The role of an ASL interpreter and a sign-language interpreter is crucial, especially when you have vital information that needs to be passed on. It can be a highstress job. “The awareness of ASL interpreters is here and growing,” she concludes. “I believe we’ll also see more recognition of Deaf people, the Deaf community, and their accomplishments in the world.”
The Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce hosts several recognition programs each year that honor the achievements of people and businesses in our community. They include the ATHENA Awards program that recognizes the achievements of women; The Lifetime Achievement Award with its focus on leadership, civic involvement, empathy and compassion; and the Business Inspiration Awards, which honor the inspiring efforts of its member businesses. On May 21, the 2021 Business Inspiration Awards Event was held virtually. It recognized the following award winners.

Canandaigua Academy’s 2020 graduating seniors, forced to rethink their commencement exercises last year because of COVID, rose to the occasion by accepting their diplomas at the top of Bristol
Mountain. After taking a seat on the chair lift with three of their family members, each graduate-to-be rode to the top, strode across a stage and received their diploma. Then it was back to the ski lift for the ride back down. The decision to hold the unique and memorable ceremony resulted from the way students felt about the traditional events they had lost in their last year in high school. Students shared that if they had a traditional commencement and had to wear face masks, social distance, and limit the crowd, they’d be sad when they thought back on it later in life, explained Jamie Farr, Canandaigua Central School District superintendent, to The Daily Messenger. This year, New York is allowing proms and graduations to proceed, but there are plenty of restrictions. In fact, the state would prefer that schools skip traditional graduation ceremonies for safety reasons, and instead hold more drive-in, drive-through and virtual events. Capacity for in-person events still remains limited. Canandaigua students were surveyed by school administrators in April about their preference come June. As of this writing, the jury is still out.

Best Gifts for Boat Owners
C
hances are good that most of us who live in the Finger Lakes have a boat owner in our lives, even if we don’t own a vessel ourselves. In 2018, approximately 14.5 million households in the U.S. owned approximately 25.2 million boats, according to survey data collected by the U.S. Coast Guard. While 94.5 percent of them – 23.83 million boats – were owned exclusively by someone residing in that household, nearly 1.4 million boats were in some manner of joint/shared ownership. The survey included data on all boats, from canoes, kayaks, rafts and rowboats to sailboats, skulls, airboats, motorized boats and personal watercraft. Approximately 4.24 million households owned one or more kayaks and about 2.14 million households were owners of canoes, but open powerboats were owned by more households than any other type of boat.
As the data dives deeper, it becomes even more interesting. Boats that were operated in 2018 were taken out on the water a total of 471.8 million days. Across all owned boats, the average number of days a vessel was used was 19: 29 days for motorized boats and 12 days for human-powered boats. Outings, meaning different occasions that boats were operated out on the water, lasted an average of 3.8 hours. The boats on the water in 2018 had 2.3 persons aboard, on average. A total of 10.2 billion person hours of boating took place that year, with person hours aboard motorized boats representing 84.1 percent (8.6 billion) of the total. More than 1.3 billion hours were spent boating on humanpowered boats. Five states – Florida, Michigan, Texas, South Carolina, and New York (!) – represented about 31 percent of all person boat hours that year.

“Boaters in the Finger Lakes pursue their passion (calling it a hobby is like calling Bill Gates just another millionaire) with vigor and enthusiasm equal to that of any coastal population,” writes Susan Gateley, a Lake Ontario sailor and scholar. “We have some of the most varied and best boating waters in the entire country in our area. Rivers, marshes, creeks for paddling, hundreds of miles of protected 4/21/20 canals for cruising, and lakes large and small offer almost Monicas_ONC_1_20_PDF.indd 1 every type of craft suitable for sailing,” she reminds us in an article in Life in the Finger Lakes magazine. You can never have enough insulated containers on a boat to keep food and beverages cool.
A Top-Snapper tool for boat canvas snaps Attaching and removing a boat cover or boat tip can be hard work. Fabric shrinks, snaps corrode, and aligning snaps becomes a two-person job. This tool can help. It includes a long blade for fastening snaps from the inside and a shorter blade for fastening snaps from the outside.
An anti-spill cup For use on the water or on the road. Too few or too shallow cup holders will never be a problem again.
Beach towels Big ones preferred, please, because they’re not only used to dry people off after a swim, they also double as a blanket on cool days. Besides, good towels are always getting lost, ruined, or tossed in the wash right in the middle of a busy boating weekend. They’re the first thing that’s grabbed

when the boat needs a wipe-down. Hands down, towels make a welcome and colorful host or hostess gift when you’re invited for a party on the pontoon boat.
Cleaning supplies It may not be an exciting gift but it sure is practical. Trust us – your boat-owning gift recipient will appreciate it. Most boaters work hard to keep their vessels gleaming, and having extra supplies conveniently on hand simply makes the chore easier. Boat erasers, for instance, magically wipe away marks from all over a boat’s interior and exterior. Just add water and squeeze to activate. They don’t contain bleach or other harsh chemicals, so they’re safe on a variety of surfaces.

Sunglasses An absolute necessity. It’s always good to have an extra pair on board in case someone forgets them or worse – they get lost in the water.
A floating dry bag A boater is always happy to own one. It provides a container for keys, a wallet, a phone, and extra sunglasses so all can be retrieved easily if they go overboard.
A life jacket This is great gift for growing children or for people who want to get into a new water sport. The safest life jacket is one that fits properly and is comfortable, even in the heat. As the experts like to point out, the life jacket that’s on you is the one that works best.
Ropes & lines If you’re looking for items that a boater will really put to good use, these are the ticket. There are a million ways ropes and lines can be used on a boat.
Fenders We’re sure that the boat enthusiast in your life already has fenders, but they’ll love some extras, especially if they are tying off with others or teaching a novice boater how to dock.
iFloats These foam floating mats are the bomb – they’re just a great way to lounge in the water. It’s an outside-the-box gift idea, but you’ll know where to find your recipient all summer long – on their iFloat.
Boat-brand apparel It’s just like giving them gear from their favorite sports team. 46

Water (continued from page 66)
Blue spaces mitigate environmental problems. “They reduce urban heat, for example. Even if it’s just a fountain or a stream, it reduces the temperature in cities,” says Grellier. In Dr. Nichols Blue Mind, he writes about the therapeutic benefits of water activities such as surf therapy in the United States. Many of his Blue Mind theories have been proven legitimate and are now a trending branch of the mindfulness landscape, reports freelance journalist Chloe Sachdev for Soho House. “A host of studies by neuroscientists have shown that water reduces cortisol levels (the stress hormone), slows our breathing and heart rate, and allows us to gently move into a mildly meditative mood. As a result, we are calmer, more creative and in a much more connected state of mind.” As blue mind theory statistics mount, more and more people are turning to water to combat physical and mental ailments including PTSD and addiction, Sachdev wrote. “Urbanites are now looking beyond yoga studios to surfing, diving and float therapy as new-wave solutions for washing away
the anxieties from 2020 and connecting with their blue mind.” The psychotherapy surf retreat Resurface, for instance, helps people in addiction recovery achieve a “flow state” in which they can focus solely on a single task. With a marked influx of clients recently, founder Josh Dickson is adding more retreats based on creativity and collaboration. I think it’s time for all of us to dive in.

f you’re thinking about remodeling or redecorating your home, join the crowd. “After the initial economic shock of stay-at-home orders last March and April, it turns out that no single industry benefited more than home improvement from the shift in consumer preferences during the months that followed,” reports national residential construction trade magazine Qualified Remodeler. “It was as if America’s 330 million residents got a good look at their homes and saw the need for upgrades.” Or ways to accommodate their new reality. The pandemic-era need for home offices, plus quiet, private spaces in which kids could learn and study, are expected to drive home remodeling at least until mid-year 2021, according to the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. If adding walls and creating rooms are in the cards for your house, our recommendation for redecorating is to take your cues from the Lake House, Canandaigua’s hot new hotel. Its style? Timeless. Its colors? Cozy. It’s feel? “Pilgrimage worthy,” says Travel + Leisure magazine, which recently put the hotel on its highly-esteemed “It List” for 2021. With 73 resorts and hotels located in 29 countries spread over four different continents, the list highlights the best new places the world has to offer. The Lake House must really be something special to be on it.
Welcome home “Our concept for the hotel’s design was inspired by our summers growing up on Canandaigua Lake,” said William Caleo of design firm Brooklyn Home Company. “We wanted the hotel to feel like a home.” Bill runs the New York City-based firm with his sister, designer Lyndsay Caleo Karol, and her artist husband Fitzhugh Karol. The Caleos are members of the Sands family,

the original owners of the property and the founders of Canandaigua Wine Company. Brooklyn Home Company worked with Post Company, formerly Studio Tack, also based in New York, to build the Lake House from the ground up. Its white-painted gabled buildings house the main hotel, a timber frame events space, a casual lakeside bar, The Rose Tavern Restaurant, and a spa. They were created in a style that is purposely undefinable, says architecture and design magazine Dezeen. The structures could have been built 100 years ago, or not. “The goal was to suggest a place that had long existed, perhaps a beloved family home that had been carefully updated over the years,” said Post Company partner The library and bar

Ruben Caldwell, in a Dezeen interview. “We imagined a family coming back year after year and finding something new each time.” The Travel + Leisure team agree. “In many ways, the Lake House feels like a super-sized vacation home with an enviable location at the north tip of the lake.”

Dark hues contrast with bright white and wood in the Rose Tavern restaurant, but in the guest rooms (there are 123) the walls are off-white with matching built-in storage and hooks for hanging your clothes. The bedside tables and custom designed four-poster beds are pale rustic wood. The combination of materials the designers chose were meant to suggest a utilitarianism that’s comfortable and familiar at the same time, noted Caldwell to Dezeen. “We wanted to use familiar materials in ways that invite a closer look and a moment of reflection.” The Rose Tavern dining room

The Proven Health Benefits of a
Water-Rich Region
S
even years ago, California-based marine biologist Wallace Nichols wrote a book called Blue Mind. In it, he discusses “the surprising science that shows how being near, in, on, or under water can make you happier, healthier, more connected and better at what you do.” It triggered a movement within the global science community to better understand and quantify what we non-scientists have known all along: that being around water – oceans, lakes, streams, springs, rivers and even fountains – makes us feel good. “It’s not like the field was completely new,” says environmental epidemiologist James Grellier in Glasgow, England. He was the project manager for BlueHealth, a pan-European research initiative that investigated the links between urban blue spaces, climate and health. “About 20 years ago, people started looking at how green spaces have a positive effect on people’s mental and physical health, and on their life satisfaction, things like that, and on the environment,” he recently told The Washington Post. “But nobody seems to have specifically looked at blue spaces.” So from 2016 to 2020, Grellier’s researchers investigated the links between water-based environments
and health and well-being. His team of public health experts, psychologists, epidemiologists, and landscape architects surveyed 18,000 people in 18 mainly European countries, and collected information about their visits to blue spaces. Here’s what their research revealed (to see more, visit bluehealth2020.eu). Short but regular time spent in blue spaces, like a daily 20-minute walk along the beach, cumulatively boosts long-term well-being, said the article. The long-term effects of less regular visits, like vacations, is still unknown, but anyone who has ever rented a cottage by the lake for a week can attest to the positive impact it has on their attitude and energy. “Being around water allows you to relax and restore your cognitive processes,” Grellier reports. “The sound of water, for example, is known to be more relaxing than urban noise.” People are more physically active when they visit blue spaces. They walk longer and in a more social way. “It’s good for them in terms of their social health, their psychological health, and their physical health.” (continued on page 47)
