Welcome to The Windmill

T

hirty-four years ago, volunteers envisioned one man’s dream and The Windmill Farm & Craft Market blossomed into life. Beginning with less than 30 members, it has now grown to 40 acres and more than 175 shops. Every Saturday from April through November, it hosts dozens of merchants and thousands of visitors. A few of the founding members are right here every weekend to greet you. Their goal is to offer you a relaxing fun-filled day where you’ll be certain to discover things you just won’t find anywhere else. Begin wherever you like. Each large building is filled with crafters, merchants, great food, and interesting shops. We know safety is on your mind, so masks are required indoors. Stroll outside on the tree-lined Street of Shops to visit your old favorites and discover newfound treasures from the more than 15 new vendors here for the 2021 season. Please practice good hygiene and avoid congregating too closely. The Windmill also offers entertainment, demonstrations and other special activities nearly every weekend so you’ll want to return again and again. Thank you for spending your day at The Windmill Farm & Craft Market. We value your visit so very much. The Staff and Merchants of The Windmill

What’s New at The Windmill for 2021? An interview with Steve Wilson, Operations Manager Did you welcome new vendors this year? We have 16 and no vacancies! We are pleased by the number of artisans, crafters and high-quality food vendors that are attracted to the market. Not wanting the customer experience to be less than exemplary, our admissions process creates and maintains diversity and broad appeal. Our market is “juried.” Every potential vendor must meet with our Membership Committee to ensure diverse products, goods and services. Criteria includes homemade, handmade, tasty and high-quality to maintain our market’s unique position among its competitors.

The Windmill is a “cooperative” business model so everyone has a personal stake in its success, although we cannot promise them exclusivity. Each of our 13 board members is a vendor here. Therefore, their decisions are based on what’s best for the market and, even more important, its customers.

Grown from the Roots of Religious Freedom

I

The book by Paul Moyer, PhD, history professor at SUNY Brockport

n the 1780s, religious enthusiast Jemima Wilkinson, “The Public Universal Friend” brought her devoted followers to Yates County seeking religious freedom. They formed a community on a large tract of land near Penn Yan and called it Jerusalem, and founded a village called Hopeton on the outlet of Keuka Lake, about a mile from Seneca Lake. was a time of political innovation and social transformation, explains Paul Benjamin Moyer, whose book tells the story of Wilkinson and her church, the Society of Universal Friends. Her message was simple: humankind was on the brink of the Apocalypse, but salvation was available to all who accepted God’s grace and the authority of his prophet, the self-proclaimed Public Universal Friend. While the religious sect eventually crumbled, many of her followers – who came from Pennsylvania and southern New England – remained. The name they chose for their community is a portmanteau of PENNsylvania and “YANkee” in honor of their origins.

Penn Yan grew as a thriving trading center in an agricultural county, with mills for lumber, buckwheat and other grains. The Birkett Mills, one of the oldest mills in the United States, has been in continuous operation since 1797. Headquartered on Main Street in Penn Yan, it is one of the largest manufacturers of buckwheat products in the world. In the late 20th century, Old Order Mennonite and Amish families started farming the region. Beginning in 1974, many families of the Groffdale Conference Mennonite Church moved to Yates County from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, seeking cheaper

farmland, according to the Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies. The Yates County Old Order Mennonites settlement is the largest horse-and-buggy community in the state. Mennonite and Amish societies are similar in many ways. Both sects are devout believers in the teachings of Jesus Christ and are easily recognized by their simple but hardworking way of life and plain dress. Both denominations are firm in their belief that they have an obligation to practice Christian doctrine in everyday life, according to a 2015 article in Life in the Finger Lakes magazine. Writer John Adamski explains that both Mennonite and Amish societies are founded on Anabaptist religious principles that originated in Europe centuries ago. (“Anabaptism” means to

religious tolerance in early America and directly contributed to the way freedom of religion is accepted here today.” A majority of the Mennonite population is engaged in agriculture and operates 99 percent of the area’s dairy farms, adds the article.

What’s New at The Windmill? (continued from page 11)

Are pandemic safety measures still in place? In 2020, we initiated a comprehensive, ongoing policy dedicated to customer safety. During the height of the pandemic we were approved to open and, because of our sanitation plan, remained open for the entire 2020 season. In every measured metric we met or exceeded the state and regional standards. This season, we have relaxed them only slightly and have adopted permanent safety measures to ensure customer and vendor health. Do you have plans for special events? Special events, live entertainment and craft demonstrations are a fixture at the Windmill. In 2021, we will begin slowly, with musical performers,

activities for children of all ages and a special craft demonstration Saturday. Visit Facebook or our website for details. How about contactless shopping options? Last year we added a “shop online” component to our very active website. Essentially, it allows the customers of our merchants to purchase from them without having to revisit the market. Although we certainly want them to return, our out-of-the-area guests found this service very useful. Later this year, we will expand our online links to a fully executed e-commerce website. Initially it will be for food, especially fresh produce, with a goal to evolve into a fully executed online version of our market.

Our Cows are #1

T

he dairy products at Sweet Acres Creamery are especially nutritious and delicious, for a variety of reasons. The first is our cows. They’re wellcared-for right here in the Finger Lakes on our beautiful regional farms. “The Girls” as we like to call them, graze on high-quality forage which they turn into sweet milk for Sweet Acres Creamery. The “sweet” views of the rolling hills and lakes they enjoy just add to their contentment.

One of our most popular products is our chocolate milk. It’s good and good for you. Sweet Acres Creamery chocolate milk has only 5 grams of added sugar. Most manufacturers add 14 to 35 grams of sugar. We think our milk has its own

natural sweetness because of the way we feed our cows. The Girls consume lots of grass grown on well-balanced soils, part of a well-managed overall feeding program that includes the necessary minerals. Our eggs are produced much the same way, as is our A2 milk, which has better protein, naturally. The next reason is our soil. This unique region is blessed with some of the best soils in the world – many “sweet acres” of it. It is our goal to maintain them so that they remain healthy, well-balanced, and teeming with living organisms. And then there is the strength of our core values: freedom, sustainability, responsibility, honesty, and community. They guide us in making sound decisions about our farms, livestock, and customer service. To see our entire selection of products, visit sweetacrescreamery. com. You can purchase them here at The Windmill, or set up home delivery. If you have a roadside stand, a corner store or other retail outlet, let’s connect and get you stocked up with plenty of Sweet Acres dairy products.

Masterfully Crafted from Quality Hardwoods

A

s a young man, Mark Wilmot, owner of Father’s Pride Woodworking, developed a love for handcrafting objects out of wood. From his father, he learned the skills and knowledge to do it well. Today, at his shop in Horseheads, New York, he uses his talent and creativity to craft wooden urns & boxes, custom picture frames, carved wooden signs and wooden wall art. To compliment his creations, he offers laser engraving to personalize your

purchase. In addition to his woodworking, he also offers laser etched Marble and Granite memorial plaques. All the materials for each of his designs are carefully selected using primarily Appalachian hardwoods which are known for their beautiful color and character. Mark welcomes your custom projects, and would be honored to bring those ideas to fruition. This Custom Heritage urn features figured Maple, Black Walnut and Brazilian Purple Heart with white epoxy inlay.

Consuming garlic has health benefits that are backed by science, reports Eating Well magazine. In the past, garlic has been used and recommended for its anti-infective properties – lab studies have shown that it has antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiparasitic properties. More recently, it’s been found to improve blood pressure, help lower cholesterol, and boost immunity. In higher doses, at may also prevent blood clots.

C

ommunity Knife Grinding has been a fixture at The Windmill for 32 years. It stocks more than 700 culinary tools and kitchen products. USA-made options range from silverhandled paring knives and baking pans to stainless steel whisks and spatulas. And then there are the knives – the finest selection, curated from around the world. At the core of the business is knife sharpening, a family tradition that dates back more than 100 years. Robert D. Polli, the son of Italian immigrants in Brooklyn, learned the

knife grinding trade from his father. Louis Polli’s truck was a familiar sight in New York City wherever people were preparing food. In 1939, when Robert was 21, he and his bride Josephine moved to Rochester and started a grinding business that flourished. By 1974, people were lining up at their truck at the Rochester Public Market to have blades of all kinds sharpened. Today, Robert’s daughter Charlene and her husband Bob run the business. When you drop off your knives, garden tools or scissors at their Windmill shop, they’ll be sharp and ready for pickup the following week.

Handcrafted Furniture that Reflects Ingenuity, Integrity and Quality

T

he story of Oak Grove Woodworking is deeply rooted in the values of the Amish and Mennonite people: uncompromising integrity, ingenuity, hard work, kindness, and dignity for all. About 300 years ago, Amish and Mennonite people emigrated from Switzerland and settled in Pennsylvania. They invested hard work into their farmland, and built houses, furniture and equipment from the high-quality wood in the forests. Quickly, their reputation for superior workmanship, conscientiousness, and a strong work ethic grew among their “English” neighbors. In the late 1970s, the fertile farmland of the Finger Lakes beckoned to the Amish and Mennonites. The land was ripe for agriculture of all kinds, and the region was economically stable enough to support the small businesses these industrious people created. In 1989, Rufus Burkholder founded

Oak Grove Woodworking to provide heirloom home furnishings and custom kitchen cabinets. Oak Grove produces dining furniture and bedroom furniture, tables, chairs, cupboards, vanities and whole-house projects from quality wood sourced throughout the Northeast. In the fall of 2018, Anthony Hostetler took over the business. His goal is to keep its core values alive while using technology as a tool to connect with clients. Anthony grew up on a dairy farm where he learned the value of hard work and developed a passion for building handcrafted pieces. He has volunteered his talents around the globe to rebuild communities after disasters. Anthony is excited to grow his business while he continues to instill the values of his Mennonite faith: quiet determination and industriousness in the face of any challenge, along with a commitment to serve all with decency and respect. T

ina Nestrick creates bright, beautiful, handcrafted garden art, including hummingbird feeders, bird baths, and huge freestanding flowers that are 10 inches wide and 5 inches high! Each of her pieces is carefully created using three to six layers of recycled glass found at resale and thrift stores, and estate and garage sales. Pieces are bonded together with clear, marinegrade industrial adhesive, which is a UV protectant and weatherproof. Many of Tina’s magnificent flowers are hand painted and then twice baked

in a 300-degree oven to enhance their durability. Other flowers are simply left as is to allow the natural beauty of the glass to work wonders in the sunlight. They dance amid other blooms in the garden as their colors catch the rays of the sun. The Glass Garden Art may have very minor imperfections because they’re created from materials with their own secret past. But as Tina will assure you, it does not interfere with the unique beauty it brings to your garden!

ow in its 24th year at The Windmill, Just Sneakers and More offers a wide selection of name-brand moccasins, flip-flops, sandals, sneakers, water shoes, work and hiking boots, shoe care products and more. Its location on the North Street of Shops has expanded twice since 1997. Owner Beverly Kota and her husband Charlie opened the business later in life, after Charlie retired from Civil Service. “We were looking for a business to start, and looked into the Windmill,” explains Beverly. “It turned out to be one of our best ideas – shoes!” They soon discovered

how much work it was to own their own business, especially with Beverly still working full-time at her “day” job – which she did until just three years ago. Last August she lost Charlie, but still enjoys running the store, especially meeting new people each week and hearing where they come from. She loves to explore all the new brands and styles of shoes, and brings new items into the shop to sell each year. Beverly notes that Charlie spent a lot of time on the floor fitting shoppers with shoes. “When people asked him why he was on his knees, he’d always laugh and say, ‘I am praying you buy a pair of shoes!’”

Ring-On!

T

he FingerLakes Bell Co. was established in 2019 by Tom and Robin Mike. Tom’s 30-year career in photography and degree in Art Education helped give his original bell idea its start. Little did either of them realize that their bell would become one of the most sought-after gifts in the Finger Lakes area. Inspiration came from a time when there were no cars or trucks. Boats on the Finger Lakes fulfilled the needs of everyday life – from transporting goods and people to recreation and entertainment. The sound of a boat’s bell was used as a signal to communicate with people both on and off the lakes’ shores. The FingerLakes Bell Co. brings those beautiful sounds back for you in the two-toned design of each bell. The powder-coated triangular-shaped bells are handcrafted right here in the region. Each one is unique in sound and appearance. Minor

variations occur during the creative process. Each bell is produced from an artistic idea, and is one of a kind. Over time, its patina will change naturally to create a very special look. “There is always a gentle breeze that brings the sound of the bell into our home.” Karen and Peter “Ringing beautifully this morning. Thank you again for your amazing artwork!” Jeanne “Thank you for creating such a lovely reminder of home.” Andrea “Gosh, we LOVE our FingerLakes Bell! It’s stunningly beautiful and sounds amazing!” Cynthia

10 Reasons to Support Farmers Markets from the California-based Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture

1. To experience real flavor The fruits and vegetables you buy at farmers markets are the freshest and tastiest available. Fruits are allowed to ripen fully in the field and are brought directly to you; no long-distance shipping, no gassing to simulate the ripening process, no sitting for weeks in storage.

with the earth, the weather, and the turning of the year.

2. To celebrate each season Shopping and cooking from a farmers market helps you connect with the cycles of nature in your region. As you look forward to asparagus in spring, savor sweet corn in summer, or bake pumpkins in autumn, you reconnect

4. To protect the environment Food in the U.S. travels an average of 1,500 miles to get to your plate. All that shipping uses large amounts of natural resources (especially fossil fuels), contributes to pollution, and creates trash with extra packaging.

3. To support family farmers With large agribusinesses dominating U.S. food production, family farmers need your support. Buying directly from them gives them a better return on their produce.

5. To nourish yourself Most food found at a farmers market is minimally processed, and many farmers go to great lengths to grow the most nutritious produce possible by using sustainable techniques, picking produce right before the market, and growing heirloom varieties. 6. To savor the biodiversity of our planet At a farmers market, you find an amazing array of produce that you don’t see in your average supermarket. 7. To promote humane treatment of animals At the farmers market, you can find meats, cheeses, and eggs from animals that have been raised without hormones or antibiotics, and who have grazed on green grass and eaten natural diets. 8. To know where your food comes from Meeting and talking to farmers and

food artisans is a great opportunity to learn more about how and where food is produced. 9. To learn cooking tips, recipes and meal ideas Farmers, ranchers, and artisans at farmers markets are often passionate cooks who will give you plenty of free advice about how to cook the foods they are selling. 10. To connect with your community Farmers markets are often social hubs where you can enjoy time with your family and meet up with friends. Going to a farmers market makes shopping a pleasure rather than a chore.

A History of The Windmill in William’s Own Words

T

he creation of The Windmill and its ability to endure, prosper, and attract even overseas visitors are a testament to the vision of its insightful, tenacious founders, including the late William Gunderman. He believed so strongly in the significance of The Windmill that he documented its origins through a series of written recollections. Through his enthusiastic words, the story of the Windmill unfolds, providing a glimpse of its founders’ determination.

William, his wife Ruth, and daughter Patricia, moved to Yates County in 1944 from the valleys of Elmira. For 38 years William was employed at New York State Electric & Gas, and for many years he operated a poultry farm. Upon his retirement, he and his family traveled extensively to craft shows to sell the baskets Ruth and Patricia crafted, as well as the woodwork and wind chimes that William fashioned. William Gunderman believed that Yates County needed a permanent

venue for its hardworking local artisans, farmers, and businesspeople to congregate and sell their goods and services. As a result of his own experiences, derived from traveling to shows and constantly packing and unpacking his “productions,” (a term William coined), he was keenly aware of the advantages that could be gained from a permanent selling location. William demonstrated an intuitive nature regarding people and their needs. He understood the economic necessity for a local marketplace, but, in addition, he recognized the importance of the camaraderie that a centralized selling place would inevitably generate. Consequently, he and his family spearheaded an initiative to develop a permanent market for vendors. A meeting was held at which eighty interested people were in attendance, and “a steering

committee was formed and plans were formulated for the organization to continue,” wrote William. The newly formed committee stumbled across some financial barriers. William and his colleagues had hoped that they would be able to secure a loan from the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. However, the potential grant was not to be, but as William described, the entrepreneurial group was “undaunted” and moved forward with their plans. Eventually the committee became incorporated under the New York State Agricultural and Market Law and was known as the Yates County Country Cooperative Incorporated. “Under this charter the co-op was able to issue and sell 500 shares of preferred stock at $100 per share and 500 shares of common stock at $25

per share,” described William. Most shares were purchased by individuals who wanted to participate as vendors and maintain a strong connection to their investment. In 1986, Patricia Gunderman was elected the cooperative’s president, all the shares were sold, and the search began for a market location. “A committee looked at many sites within the county and settled on a 26-acre lot on Route 14A about midway between Penn Yan and Dundee,” wrote William. “The land chosen, although in the area desired, left a lot to be desired from a practical standpoint, a shallow topsoil over a near surface shalerock (sic) subsoil made drainage a major problem and as one local farmer summed it up ‘You couldn’t raise hell on that piece of property even if you had a barrel of hard cider.’” The local Mennonite community “pledged the support of their

Mennonite craftsmen in furnishing carpenters and labor to erect the first building in the form of a barnraising,” recollected William. “This faith by the Mennonites was good news to the organizers of the coop. because they hoped the market would act as a catalyst to bring the English and the Mennonites closer together because the Amish and the Mennonites are a generous people who contribute much to the communities in which they live.” Pat Scott, current president of the Windmill Cooperative, recalled that the barn-raising, which occurred on April 25, 1987, was remarkable to watch; reporters from surrounding counties arrived to witness and photograph the Mennonite fathers and sons at work. Remarkably, complete strangers who happened down Route 14A that day were so in awe of the notable occasion that (continued on page 62)

ore and more people are enjoying the health benefits of hot tubs. Warm water combined with buoyancy and jet massage is a magic formula for relieving arthritis, fibromyalgia, lower back pain, stress, and sleep issues. Even the sounds of a hot tub are healthful. Like a fountain or stream, a hot tub provides splashing and bubbling noises that many people find soothing. For 16 years, Softub Express at The Windmill has been selling affordable, portable and comfortable hot tubs to people in the Finger Lakes. Their soft-sided Softubs weigh between 45 and 90 pounds and plug directly into any dedicated 110v outlet – no electrician needed. Ongoing monthly

electrical charges are around one-third those of a traditional hot tub. Softubs are more comfortable too. It’s like sitting on a soft and comfortable couch versus a hard plastic chair. “We love the fun, friendly and family-oriented atmosphere of The Windmill,” says Softub Division Manager Jennifer Cummings. “We love working with other small businesses, and showing consumers the high-quality products they can get when they shop small and local.” The newest Softub model, The Portico, is a bestseller right now. It features extended seating, the powerful Poseidon Jet, and the highest jet count ever offered in a Softub.

History of The Windmill (continued from page 56)

As The Windmill grew, special events were added including custom and classic car shows, holiday celebrations and music & dance performances. several stopped and asked how they could be of assistance. “Approximately 30 Mennonites were joined by 20 members of the coop and the barn raising began under the supervision of Ivan Hoover. Very little voice commands were heard because each one of the group seemed to know exactly what was expected of him and automatically went about doing it,” scribed William. “…The building was taking shape right before your very eyes.” The barn-raising was accompanied by a “smorgasbord” of everything from chili to pickles to pies, with many of the baked goods coming fresh from the oven of Barbara Hoover and other Mennonite kitchens in the community. “A truly wonderful day with so much community spirit present you just knew that with such a great beginning the market was sure to prosper and be successful,” wrote William. By this time, the future 62

marketplace came to be known as The Windmill; Debbie Clancy, who was assisting with promotional work, suggested the name. In addition, the original ticket booth from the muchmissed Roseland Amusement Park was donated and slated to be used as the Windmill’s information booth. June 27, 1987, was an historic date for The Windmill. It opened for business with 90 vendors eagerly selling their goods and welcoming visitors to experience what they had worked so arduously to achieve. “The enthusiasm of these visitors was amazing and heartening to those who had struggled so hard to make it all come together – and the positive statements of approval of those first timers and their promises of returning, along with the sunshine and good camaraderie of the day made that opening day a dream come true,” wrote William. Patricia Gunderman, president of the co-op said, “Tears were welling up in my eyes and there were no words to express the way we felt.” Visitors Guide 2021

and mean depth of 186 feet and 101 feet, respectively. It holds around 379 billion gallons of water. Its name comes from a Native American phrase meaning “Canoe Landing.” The Senecas called it “o-gaya-ga” (“the promontory”) referring to the place where the lake splits into the “Y.” It’s Bluff Point today. Keuka Lake possesses large and healthy populations of lake trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, landlocked salmon, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and yellow perch. The productive fishery is supported by large numbers of baitfish, mostly sawbellies. Many

consider it the best fishery in the region. The Keuka Lake Association monitors the water to ensure that it is suitable for drinking, fishing, and swimming. Tributary streams, groundwater, and the lake itself are regularly tested for water quality. White settlement of the area began in 1787 when evangelist Jemima Wilkinson and her followers arrived. Legend has it that she told them she would demonstrate her miraculous powers by walking on Keuka Lake’s waters. continued on next page

The winemaking industry of the Finger Lakes was born at the south end of the lake in 1829, when the Reverend William Bostwick began growing grapes for sacramental purposes. In 1861, the Pleasant Valley Wine Company became the first official winery in the area and by 1900, more than 10,000 acres of vineyards surrounded Keuka Lake. In 1837, steamboats began carrying goods and passengers across the lake. The traffic helped develop cottage neighborhoods along the shoreline. While the shore of Keuka Lake is primarily residential,

• Keuka College is located in Keuka Park on the western shore of the lake’s east branch; • Keuka Lake State Park is located on the eastern side of the lake’s northwest branch; • Camp Iroquois, run by the New York state Sheriff’s Institute, is located on the eastern side of the bluff; • YMCA Camp Cory is located on the eastern side of the lake’s northeast branch; • Camp Good Days and Special Times is located on the western side of the lake’s northwest branch; and • Garrett Memorial Chapel is located near the tip of the bluff between the two branches.
