ow many times has some young friend in your store asked you if you play all day, or has a customer asked if it’s fun to pick out new items for your shelves? Of course, our answer is always a big smile (this year, that smile has been behind a mask or over a screen as we Facetime and Zoom and sell over social media platforms, but the grin is still there) and a nod as we acknowledge just how wonderful this profession of play can be. We ignore the exhaustion of our new 24-hour business models, our concerns about cash flow and the supply chain issues facing our industry, and put that waiting pallet of boxes to be received firmly out of our minds as we take just a minute to celebrate that yes, this is our real job. We believe in the power of healthy play and its transformative role in development as surely as we believe

that the miracles of Christmas and Hanukkah shall come, that childhood is precious beyond measure, and that as ambassadors of play we fill vital roles in our local communities as we support parents and schools, grandparents and therapists, neighbors and friends. Of course, as ASTRA members we have a deep bench of support in this mission. Our colleagues in retail, our partners in manufacturing, design and distribution, and our sales reps who breathe new possibilities into every season as they arrive with samples and catalogs (or emails and links) make us the very best we can be. It’s easier to be “independent” when you are part of a community that supports, promotes and advises us as we source the very best in toys for our customers. One of those programs, Best

Toys for Kids, is our reason for celebration today and in this very special issue. You are holding tangible evidence of our community of play experts – the products featured in this magazine are the result of your colleagues’ commitment to our mutual success. Nominated by your peers from every segment of our industry, vetted and categorized by a volunteer group of retailers, and finally voted on by YOU, these are the ASTRA choices for this year’s award season. Loopy Looper is the brainchild of Thierry Denoual, founder of Blue Orange Games. Thierry was looking for something he could use to take breaks at his desk and quietly fidget with while working. After playing around with a marble and tin, Loopy Looper was born. With the renewed interest in the fidget category, we are excited to make our mark with this new device. Both FinGears and Loopy Looper are finalists in the Fidget category so it may be tough choice for voting retailers.

consider, and you always deliver. This year, hundreds of individual items were submitted, and your enthusiasm and discernment of potential award winners was evident in every response. Our stalwart group of retailers, including David Castillo from The Red Balloon Toy Store in Salt Lake City; Tammy Clower of Giggle Monkey Toys in Dahlonega, Georgia; the “scotts”: Scott Friedland from Timeless Toys in Chicago and Scott Mazerall of Maziply Toys in Kingston, Massachusetts, are all charged with researching and reviewing each product on the list. This year, as we were unable to gather and play in person, all of that research happened on our screens, mostly (in my case) late at night after closing the store. We met over Zoom calls, ably supported by Jenna Stirling at ASTRA, and kindly herded like easily distracted cats by the always-patient Sue Warfield. Those discussions, to me, are exactly what ASTRA membership represents, played out in real life. Learning from my colleagues in those meetings, hearing about their creativity in store operations, listening to their careful analysis of the play value of each item in the current marketplace, and recognizing their commitment to good design and open-ended play is like a master class in toy selling. Oh, how I wish all of you could be in that room* or on those calls. Once we have sorted and tallied, grouped by category and developed the list of finalists from your nominations and our charter to showcase and acknowledge the best offerings from that massive stack of toys, we turn our award decisions back over to you, our retail members. Your wisdom, your experience, and your excitement for this fourth quarter and all the possibilities it represents are now needed. Your votes pick the award winners. Congratulations are due, to be sure, to every product nominated and to the teams of inventors, designers and artists, manufacturers, distributors, and sales professionals who bring those wonderful playthings to our attention and ultimately to our shelves. But it is your turn, friends, to help select this year’s list of award winners. Look carefully at the products included in this exciting, first-of-its-kind special issue. Vote for those you select, and share your feedback with the rest of us.
