01

Dear FAIS Community, Welcome to this year’s Annual Report on Philanthropy. This publication celebrates the incredible generosity of everyone who so willingly gave their time, treasures, and talents in order to continue to deliver such wonderful learning opportunities to our students during the 2018-19 academic year. As I begin my first year as Head of School, I am already impressed with the generosity of this community. As we embark on our 40th year as a school, our philanthropy is healthier than it has ever been. Our Annual Fund is strong, the Gala was a huge success, due to so many hearts and hands, and of course, the Capital Campaign was a great success. Thanks to all of you! It is all of you that enable us to develop global citizens, foster multi-language ability, shape active learners, and deliver academic excellence. Because of the philanthropy of our community, we are able to prepare our students for their futures through immersion and inquiry based programs. This is truly a gift. Our new Middle School building will be transformative for the future of French American International School. This was a Herculean effort to provide collaborative, flexible, and modern learning spaces that will enable us to deliver our mission more effectively than ever. The campaign required giving from everyone—trustees, parents, faculty/staff, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, and friends —and without all of you, this would not have been possible. I am genuinely grateful to be a new member of this wonderfully committed and generous community, and I look forward to our future together as we greet our 40th year! Sincerely,

Scott Hardister

04

Dear FAIS Community, As I look out my window at our state-of-the-art new Middle School building, I see a shining beacon of what philanthropy does for our School. I am thrilled with this look back on the 2018-19 school year represented in our Annual Report on Philanthropy. As we start our 40th year as a community, Annual Gala, Annual Fund, and the Endowment are all going strong. We finished our Capital Campaign, and built the building! What an amazing year! Our School’s culture of philanthropy is inspirational. Our robust Annual Fund brings much needed funding for the equipment and programs that ensure both academic excellence and those extras that make everything at our school possible for our teachers and students. Our special events allow us to celebrate and build community while raising funds for necessary projects to improve the School. Our Capital Campaign guarantees that we can build permanent buildings to replace our aging modular structures. The generosity of this community is evident in the $784,930 from more than 458 donors and more than 10,342 hours of volunteer time in the 2018-19 school year. Every gift that you make to FAIS—whether it be $1, $100, $1,000, or $10,000, an hour of volunteer time, or a gift in kind—helps ensure that our School will be able to educate students as internationally-minded global citizens, fully prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow. We are grateful for your generosity and excited about the future of our School, students, and community. Thank you! Ami Stamm Margolin, Director of Development

MERCI DANKE 谢谢 GRACIAS THANK YOU! We gratefully acknowledge all donors who contributed to the French American International School from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019. Contributors whose gifts were received after June 30, 2018 will be acknowledged in next year’s Annual Report. Every effort has been made to ensure that this report is accurate and complete. We apologize if we have omitted or misspelled your name. Please report any corrections to Development at 503292-7776 x1305. To give or pledge to FAIS for the 2019-20 school year, please contact Director of Development Ami Stamm Margolin at amargolin@faispdx.org or 503-292-7776 x1305.

VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP FAIS programs, initiatives, and day-to-day operations are made possible through our dedicated team of parent volunteers. From volunteers that serve in classrooms, to our Parent Ambassador Network who welcomes and shows new parents the lay of the land, and to our event and campaign committees, every hour logged takes our school to the next level. Thank you to ALL of our volunteers; your dedication to the FAIS mission is not taken for granted. Hurray! This year, hours logged increased by 10%!

ANNUAL FUND

ANNUAL GALA

FÊTE DU VIN

The Annual Fund is sustained by 100 percent tax-deductible gifts made every year by FAIS families and friends. Every gift, whatever the size, has an impact on our classrooms and students. Jennifer Martindale was our 2018-19 parent chair.

The FAIS Annual Gala is our biggest fundraiser of the year and always a night of celebration. Funds raised at the event improve our academic programs, provide resources for new and exciting initiatives, and help us make improvements to our campus. This year’s gala, Confetti, Cakes, and Candles, was chaired by Jenny O’Brien and Melissa Wilmot.

Held each fall, this annual wine-tasting event honors local wineries and the start of a new school year as parents gather to drink great wine, eat delicious food, and make memories. Chaired by Andrea Pastega Vloon, it was a great kick-off to the year for the FAIS community!

07

NEW FAMILY WELCOMING GROUP The New Family Welcoming Group provides support to new FAIS families by sharing their experiences, answering questions, and being a general resource during the summer and in the beginning of the school year. Lee Nguyen and Diana Fundak were this year’s co-chairs.

FAIS FAMILIES VOLUNTEERED MORE THAN 10,342 HOURS IN THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR, A 10% INCREASE FROM THE YEAR PRIOR.

PARENT AMBASSADOR NETWORK The Parent Ambassador Network, chaired by Joy Rain, represents FAIS at internal and external promotional events and cultivates relationships within the greater metropolitan area, for the ultimate purpose of helping to bring new families to FAIS.

PARENT LIAISON COMMITTEE The Parent Liaison Committee functions as a link between home and school for FAIS families. The committee chair hosts monthly meetings with the Lower School and Middle School Division Heads represented at each of the meetings. These forums provide families with a place to stay informed while also connecting with other parents. Denisse Reyes was our PLC Chair in the 2018-2019 year.

RUN FOR THE ARTS The Run for the Arts program, organized by the non-profit Young Audiences, encourages students to collect sponsors from family and friends, and applies the proceeds to arts, music and theater workshops, performances, classes, and events on the FAIS campus. Many thanks to our volunteer co-chairs Diana Fundak and Jennifer Martindale, and to each of the Run for the Arts classroom volunteers who helped the event “run” smoothly!

ANNUAL FUND DONORS At FAIS, we’re fortunate that tuition covers the majority of things to keep the school running. There are also a number of things that wouldn’t be possible without the Annual Fund. Awakening a creative talent. Empowering teachers with development opportunities to inspire our students. Forging a connection to the environment through our nature trail and Discovery Park. 2018-2019 ANNUAL GIVING

The 31st Annual FAIS Gala and Auction “Confetti, Cakes, and Candles,” held at the Hilton Downtown Portland, was a festive and “birthday” themed evening celebrating the 40th anniversary of the French American International School and the 20th anniversary of our Gilkey International Middle School. Parents, alumni, and friends gathered to toast to the new year and support FAIS, raising over $200,000 to support our amazing teachers and students. We also bid “adieu” to Pam Dreisin, Head of School, who retired at the end of the 2018-2019 school year. One of the biggest highlights of the evening was the Special Appeal, which raised more than $45,000 in support of initiatives and programming used to engage students in new and innovative ways, in addition to teacher professional development. Outgoing Board Chair, Matt Donegan, announced that he would be making a $25,000 pledge to our school endowment, bringing our total revenue of the night to more than $225,000. Thank you to everyone who attended, donated, and made the event a success!

Provide professional development opportunities for our outstanding faculty and staff
