Mission

French International School of Oregon develops curious and critical thinkers through a robust and immersive multilingual curriculum. We are committed to fostering an inclusive community that celebrates diverse perspectives and creates the foundation for reflective learners to thrive and effect change in an interconnected world.

Who We Are

Our innovative, multilingual curriculum is taught in small classes by native speakers. Students are the center of our community and learn through authentic inquiry, collaboration, and multiple teaching styles to discover and hone strengths.

How We Create Belonging

French International is a welcoming community, connected by shared principles of integrity, respect, empathy, and equity.

Letter from Head of School

Dear French International Community,

Welcome to this year’s Annual Report on Philanthropy. This publication celebrates the incredible impact of your generosity. It honors everyone who gave their time, treasures, and talents to continue to deliver impactful learning opportunities to our students during the 2023-24 school year.

This year, we overcame challenges as a community and continued to move forward in year two of our Strategic Plan. We invited international speakers to campus and sent students of all ages on field trips across the state. We continued to invest in our science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) programs with projects and field studies experiences that align with each grade’s curriculum. We had a busy year of events, including Fête du Vin and the Annual Gala, where we celebrated community and raised important funds to support financial aid.

We’ve started raising funds for our capital campaign and are in the leadership giving phase as we continue to have one-on-one conversations. Our Annual Fund this year saw a 57% parent participation rate, including 102 first-time donors. Our community also volunteered more than 8,500 hours. Your support helps us fulfill our mission as we educate global leaders and thinkers. It continues to be the generosity of all of you—our parents, trustees, faculty and staff, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, and friends—that enables us to deliver our robust and immersive multilingual curriculum in creative and innovative ways.

I look forward to our future together, and I am truly thankful to be part of this incredible and dedicated community.

Warm Regards,

Letter from Development

Dear French International Community,

As the Development team, we are delighted to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of the families who have generously donated throughout the school year and to the dedicated volunteers who have given their time and energy to support French International.

Your generosity and commitment have played a pivotal role in enhancing the educational experience of our students. Thanks to your contributions, we have been able to provide a wide array of opportunities that foster curiosity, critical thinking, and a passion for learning.

This year has been a testament to our community’s strength and unity. We have witnessed an unprecedented surge in participation and support for the Annual Fund, with more families stepping forward to donate than ever before! This remarkable achievement is a clear reflection of the deep-rooted belief in French International’s mission and values. Together, as a community, we can create a powerful impact.

We also want to express our deepest gratitude for the over 8,500 hours volunteered by our community. Events like Fête du Vin and the Annual Gala, which further strengthen our financial aid program, are only possible due to the consistent dedication of our volunteers. Your commitment creates the vibrant, inclusive, and supportive environment our students enjoy.

As we look forward, the importance of your philanthropic support for French International continues to grow. Your contributions make a meaningful difference in the lives of students, empowering them to pursue their passions and achieve their full potential.

With sincere appreciation, The Development Team

VOLUNTEER

The success of French International is driven by the dedication of our volunteers. Volunteers not only support classroom activities, welcome new families, and coordinate events that create community, but volunteerism involves the entire family in a student’s educational life. Service is part of our IB philosophy, and volunteers model to students that we have a shared responsibility to our connected global community and meaningful action can make a difference.

ANNUAL FUND

Annual Fund Representatives are our conduit to the classroom for the Annual Fund, our school’s most critical fundraising effort. Volunteers play an important role in raising awareness, fostering a culture of giving and encouraging our community to donate to the Annual Fund. Volunteers primarily support the Annual Fund participation competition.

Special thanks to: Michelle Callan, Christina Chamberlain, Katey Flack, Elena Kochetkova, Ellen Li

It wasn’t about the size of the gift but the collective spirit and commitment to our student’s success.

The engagement and growth across all grades were phenomenal. Thanks to your generosity, we raised $42,848.25 for the Annual Fund within four weeks and increased our overall parent participation to 57%.

• Pay for new, innovative programs that enhance the rich, multicultural learning experiences

• Provide financial aid to improve the socio-economic diversity of our student population

• Provide professional development opportunities for our outstanding faculty and staff

• Protect the fiscal health of the school during times when enrollment fluctuates.

The French International community came together to celebrate the 36th Annual Gala— Studio ’79: Voyage dans le Temps—at The Nines Hotel on April 6, 2024. Over 300 guests attended this glittering evening of glam and giving.

Studio ‘79: Voyage dans le Temps was a celebration of the school’s past, present, and - most importantly - future. Parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends gathered to raise funds for financial aid. Each component of the event—the silent auction, art auction, live auction, and special appeal—went towards financial aid for students.

Together, our community raised over $270,000 in support of financial aid at French International.

This event was a community effort. From art projects and grade baskets to items donated for the silent and live auctions and the countless hours dedicated to planning and executing the event itself, the gala is not possible without the generosity of our community.

A special thank you to all of the families and friends of French International who generously donated their wealth of time, talent, and treasure to the Gala. Finally, thank you to the Gala committee, chaired by Jennifer Buddenhagen, for their time and dedication. We couldn’t do it without you!

Sponsors

Year-long event sponsorships help us to underwrite the cost of our signature events, ensuring that all funds raised can go directly to support Financial Aid at French International.

Thank you to all our sponsors from the 2023-24 school year!

FINANCIAL AID 2023-2024

As part of the “People” pillar of our Strategic Plan, we strive to broaden access to French International to further enrich our school culture and cultivate a sense of belonging for all members of our community. Having a diverse range of backgrounds among families leads to a variety of perspectives, enriching the learning experience for everyone.

This year, all proceeds from the Gala, including the Special Appeal, went to support financial aid. Part of our mission is to foster an inclusive community and we believe tuition should not be a barrier to anyone who wants to access a French International education. Our investment in financial aid has grown 78% over the last five years. Currently, 17% of our families benefit from financial aid.

This year’s special appeal for financial aid raised $118,641.

Investing in Our Future Leaders

As part of the 2022-27 Strategic Plan, French International committed to creating a unified, expanded, sustainable campus, planning for the site’s long-term future and designing a permanent Maternelle and Lower School. This capital project allows the school to strategically plan for the future, continue educating global leaders for years to come, and establish itself as one of the premier independent schools in Portland.

The new site will revolutionize the educational landscape. With new Maternelle and Lower School classrooms catering to each age group’s specific needs, flexible learning spaces, and authentic connections to nature, students will be empowered to achieve their full potential. The campus will foster a sense of community and prioritize play while enhancing the school’s educational capabilities.

We extend our most sincere gratitude to our lead supporters for their support of our bold vision. Your generosity continues to fuel our aspirations.
