WHAT IS THE VOLVO OCEAN RACE? The Volvo Ocean Race covers 38,739 nautical miles and visits 11 ports in its nine month circumnavigation of the world. The Race starts in Alicante with an in-port race on 4th October 2014, with the Race officially underway from the 11th October when the Teams set off for Cape Town.
LEG 1: ALICANTE TO CAPE TOWN, 6,487 nautical miles - The Shakedown Leg This is the first time that all the Teams will line up against each other in competition. The opening race leg is 6,487 nautical miles. The teams race from north to the south into the trade wind belts, with an equator crossing and the Doldrums to negotiate in the middle. The final section of the Race sees the teams duck into the Southern Ocean to ride the big breezes and waves to South Africa.
LEG 2: CAPE TOWN TO ABU DHABI, 6,125 nautical miles – Pirate Coast The Teams travel from the Southern Hemisphere back to the North and experience a huge range of sea states and temperatures. On leaving port they are straight into strong headwinds, followed quickly by light wind sailing, leaving the teams to react to every wind shift, constant manoeuvres and sail changes – this can mean very little sleep for all the teams.
6
One other watch for the Teams in this region is piracy – and they’ll travel a long way east to avoid any potential issues, although with the boats travelling at 20 knots plus, it would have to be a fast pirate that caught a Volvo Ocean 65.
LEG 3: ABU DHABI TO SANYA, 4,670 nautical miles – The Heatwave and Lady Luck One of the tougher legs of the Race, with uncontrollable hot and humid conditions of the Indian Ocean, the VO 65 can feel very cramped in the heat, no air conditioning, coupled with light airs. They have hugely unpredictable weather systems to navigate across, unlit fishing traffic, fishing nets and rubbish in the water. Heavy shipping and large container ships of the Singapore Channel means that the teams can often feel like they’re sailing the wrong way on a motorway, before they finish with an upwind battle into Sanya.
LEG 4: SANYA TO AUCKLAND, 5,264 nautical miles –The City of Sails The crews will again cross the equator as they head from the north to south hemisphere. Weather systems can drive the team further north, close to Japan, as they try to get east before turning the corner to Auckland – proving that often in sailing the most direct route isn’t always the fastest – or most logical!
Standard UK delivery is £4.95, see www.musto.com for all delivery information
There’s a chance of experiencing a rough South China Sea, and as the Teams approach the Equator they again need to negotiate the Doldrums before navigating the swiftest route through the archipelago of the Soloman and surrounding islands. Tropical activity in the Tasman Sea can turn a small Doldrums storm into a tropical storm, as the teams close on Auckland.
LEG 5: AUCKLAND TO ITAJAI, 6,776 nautical miles – The Southern Ocean The Southern Ocean is what all offshore sailors really dream about racing across. The roaring forties give uninterrupted strong winds, deep waves and only albatrosses for company. The Teams have to remain particularly vigilant for icebergs, and they really are on their own out here, with the closest rescue coming from their competitors. Once around Cape Horn they return to relative civilisation – although as the teams get closer to Brazil thunderstorms appear and can dog the fleet until their arrival in Itajai. On this leg the right kit could not be more important, temperatures are freezing and relative humidity is close to 100%.
HOT TOPICS |
LEG 6: ITAJAI TO NEWPORT, 5,010 nautical miles – Coastal Fling With the new one-design Volvo Ocean 65 it can be in Legs 6 and 7 that the front runners start to emerge. There may still be all to race for as the teams fight along this coastal leg. On leaving Itajai the teams may experience very stormy variable conditions – here the navigators have some crucial tactical decisions to make offshore or inshore? Sea breeze or land breeze? Land breeze is a good night feature in Brazil but it’s not constant. From Brazil the teams will look to catch a south easterly trade wind, again negotiate the Doldrums, and avoid being carried too far east and upwind sailing back to Newport.
LEG 7: NEWPORT TO LISBON, 2,800 nautical miles – The Atlantic Crossing Leg 7 sees the teams head back to Europe, emotions are high as they enter into the last portion of the Race. Those with leads will look to consolidate their position; others may look for more risky strategies. Spring in the Atlantic can serve up rough weather and deep depressions encouraging some of the fastest sailing on this crossing.
LEG 8: LISBON TO LORIENT, 647 nautical miles – Navigators Beware A short, sharp leg that will be flat out racing for all, with little time for sleep. Boats will be at their most empty, carrying minimum supplies compared to the big 6,000 plus legs seen earlier in the Race. In the last edition the Teams faced the worst storms of the whole Race just before arriving in France so these 647 nautical miles are not to be underestimated.
LEG 9: LORIENT – THE HAGUE – GOTHENBURG, 1,600 nautical miles – The Home Coming Mentally this could be the hardest leg of the whole Race – sailors will be tired after eight months of hard competition. Even though they’re competing, they must still follow international Traffic Lane rules, as they cross The English Channel, one of the busiest shipping channels in the world. After the 24-Hour pit stop at The Hague the Teams need to watch out for oil rigs and the wind farms which can take up huge stretches of water. Then the Skagerrak, and the approach to Gothenburg, for the grand finale of the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15.

COMBAT KIT Helen Fretter talks to Nigel Musto on the Volvo Ocean Race team kit requirements ‘Our first introduction to the Volvo was in 1979, with Conny van Rietschoten, who was the owner of “Flyer”. He’d won the ’77 race on handicap but wanted to win the ’81 race on line honours, so he was building himself a big beast of a boat, which became “Flyer II”. ‘The problem they’d had in ’77, keeping the crew warm and dry enough to use the boat properly, were pretty huge. Conny and my father Keith agreed to work together on a development project – in those days we were still sail makers, making a bit of clothing but mainly for dinghies and inshore stuff. Keith was keen to take on the project, and his brief from Conny was: “ I want to sit in a bucket of freezing water for a month and stay warm and dry!” ‘We did a two-year development programme, which resulted in our first ever ocean foul weather gear. The hood-collar system which came out of it won the Silk Cut design award. We put together the world’s first ever three-layer system – next to skin layer, middle layer, foul weather gear – before even the back-packing boys had done it. It was a fantastic campaign and after the race we launched our first ocean weather gear to the public, and that was really the start of the brand.’
For this year’s race MUSTO is working with four teams, and the development concept remains the same. ‘We’ve got three or four development projects going on in this race, each with a different boat. After every race we take what we consider to be the best ideas and the ideas that worked, and put them into our standard kit.’ ‘We’re doing a hood project with Dongfeng, an underwear project with Abu Dhabi, there are various bits and pieces going on with all the boats. It’s partly the reason we get involved – to be able to sit down with four full crews of the quality that they are, and say “Right guys, what do you want? What’s not right? What have you used that you really like but we’re not supplying at the moment?” Some of it works, some of it doesn’t.’ ‘The Volvo boats are also absolutely brutal on kit because of the non-slip they use, so we’ve been looking into using some alternative patch fabrics which will probably go into production as well.’ As the race has changed, so the kit demands have moved on too. The new route sees the sailors spend more time in warm climates, ‘We’ve had to add in more hot weather protection – UV shirts, fast-dry shorts. Something to protect them from the sun becomes really key.’ The shift to increasingly fast boats has also impacted on the materials used. ‘When the 70 came along, all of a sudden the boat speeds significantly increased. They were much wetter boats, and the guys were getting hit much harder by much more water, so we had to increase the weight of everything. The problem with the lighter weight fabrics is when the water hits them it compresses against the body and you feel the cold shock of the water. If you’ve got a heavier, stiffer fabric it holds the cold shock off you for longer, you don’t feel every wave and therefore you conserve more body heat.’ ‘On these boats, with the non-slip they use, the heel angles they’re sailing at and the rolling down the desk they’re doing, our gear will see an average five years’ of use in five legs!’

TEAM VESTAS WIND No one can accuse Team Vestas Wind of not being efficient. The Team was announced on 12th August, took delivery of their boat on 1st September, completed their 2,000 nautical mile non-stop pre-entry requirement and arrived at the Alicante Race Start Village by mid-September as required by Race regulations. That the Team have only covered 2,000 miles as opposed to the 15,000 plus achieved by Team SCA and Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing is no doubt a disadvantage but with the huge wealth of experience on board, starting with four times competitor Chris Nicholson as Skipper, the Team quickly expect to be threatening the current favourites. In Chris’s own words, “We’ve got the mix right, just give us time”.

DONGFENG RACE TEAM Dongfeng Race Team is racing for China in the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15. The goal of the Team is to deliver a competitive campaign with, for the first time in the history of the Race, multiple Chinese sailors on board. The Chinese members of the Team were selected after long and arduous recruitment trials, the majority have not had offshore sailing experience but since selection the recruits have been learning fast – not only how to sail a Volvo Ocean 65 but also how to speak English to enable them to communicate with the other crew on board. To enable the relatively inexperienced Chinese recruits to be competitive they are joined by hugely experienced, mostly French, team mates, skippered by Charles Caudrelier - a previous Volvo Ocean Race winner aboard Groupama. They are also joined by a legend of French offshore sailing, Pascal Bidégorry, who will act as navigator for the Team.

BACKGROUND: The only Frenchman in the Team, Seb spent four years with Groupama and played a vital support role, but did not sail in the 2011-12 edition of the Race which the French team won. As well as providing back-up in Groupama’s Volvo campaign, Sebastien took part in their Tour de France à la Voile campaign last year. Seb has also sailed MOD 70s and was heavily involved in the Class 40 between 2006 and 2009.
BACKGROUND: Amory is a long-time friend of both Charlie and Mark, and was partly responsible for bringing the duo to the attention of the world when he reported onboard some of their previous campaigns. Amory is an even more vital asset to the Team as he was on board reporter on the previous Race for PUMA Ocean Racing. He has an incredible eye for a photo, and a nose for a story. As on board reporter he not only has responsibility of telling the Team’s story to the world but he is also responsible for packing and preparing all the crew meals – which he does with a real passion, which makes Amory, if not the most important man on the Team, then definitely the most loved!

IAN WILLIAMS
FOUR WORLD MATCH RACING TITLES AND COUNTING
26
The name Ian Williams might not conjure the household recognition of many Olympic or America’s Cup stars, but it should. Competing in his 10th season as a professional, he has four world titles under his belt in what has to be, psychologically, the toughest of sailing’s disciplines. Evenly matched boats racing head-to head: “There’s no buying your way to the top,” explains Ian. “You’ve got to go out and perform on the day against whoever is thrown at you. It’s not like a regatta where you can discard a poor result, it’s win or lose. It is a bit brutal sometimes.” Ian Williams’ sailing career could have been short-lived. Having missed out on selection for the 2000 Olympics, at the tender age of 23, he was looking forward to the 2004 event when the discipline was dropped from the Games. As Ian recalls, it was probably the lowest point of his career. However, match racing’s World Tour continued to thrive and Ian made the decision to go fully professional early in 2005, giving up a promising career as a lawyer. Did Ian ever worry he’d made the wrong decision? He laughs: “Yeah, pretty much every day!” “It’s a pretty unstable job being a professional sailor,” he explains. “We don’t make the money that some sportsmen do, so you need to have a long career to make it work. It’s a bit of a concern - what’s going to happen

next in terms of where the sport will go and what you’re going to be doing… but I don’t regret the decision. I’m very lucky to be able to sail for a living.” Just two years later, Ian was rewarded with his first match racing world title. “That was a huge milestone. To improve enough and get to the top of the game in two years was very satisfying, and a great vindication for me, because it was a big decision to quit my job.” Proving he was no one-hit wonder, Ian won again in 2008. However, a couple of leaner years followed: “In 2009 and 2010 we had some good moments, but we never really looked like we were going to win it. You always worry that the game’s moved on and improved or you’re getting a bit old or you’ve lost your edge…” That made Ian’s win in 2011 all the more satisfying. “We came back with a new team in 2011 and really dominated, certainly the five-man boats. That was great to come back and win a lot of regattas and the tour like that.” 2012 delivered a fourth world title, and while he missed out in 2013, 2014 was looking promising with Williams leading going into the penultimate event. One of the keys to Ian’s success is undoubtedly is his team organisation. “The larger boats generally suit me for
Ian Williams ©Ian Roman
a few reasons,” he admits. “The main one being that it’s a bigger team and the organisation of the team becomes more critical. I focus heavily on what you get from the crew in terms of tactics and decision-making, as well as the physical roles on board. I think it gives you a higher potential top level and if we reach our potential we are very, very hard to beat.” That pays too when things go wrong: “We focus a lot on the team and how we can back each other up,” he explains. “So not just me, but if anybody on the crew is not on the top of their game for whatever reason in one aspect we try to have support systems inbuilt in the team to allow them to focus more on their core skills and get their confidence back.” Obviously kit is as important in match racing as it is in any sailing arena – perhaps more so with a possible eight races a day and a wide variation in venues and boat types to complicate matters. “Being able to remain comfortable and warm, but not overheat during the races is a key thing,” says Ian, “which is where the breathable technology is very important.”
What does Ian see as essential in his kit bag? “My MPX Race Salopettes. They are such a diverse piece of clothing because they are obviously waterproof, but they can provide a good level of warmth without being too hot - so we actually use them over a big range of conditions.” What else does Ian see as key in his hunt for that fifth world title? “I think we put a big commitment this year to training, which made a big difference. There’s always pressures on time and funding because we’re not fulltime on match racing, but we put in a big commitment this year to practising and that’s helped to make us a bit sharper in the regattas so far.”
To win five world match racing titles would be an amazing achievement, but there are plenty of other arenas where Ian would like to make his mark. “I really enjoy my work on big boats as tactician – the Farr 40s, RC44s, TP52s…” The Farr 40 worlds were next on his list, but his ultimate dream lies in the America’s Cup. “Of course I’d love to do the America’s Cup one day. It’s up to me to show the teams that I would be a valuable addition.” By Gael Pawson

MUSTO ambassador James Haskell, Wasps and England rugby player, put his strength behind the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s initiative, demonstrating how even the strongest will tire when battling against the water. He says, ‘The RNLI, the lifeboats, is one of these things which are fixed in your psyche from a very young age. It’s a venerable public institution.’ James took part in the RNLI punch bag challenge, hitting a bag filled with a tonne of water, and tried to keep up speed and force, although tired after a few minutes. ‘I like to pride myself on being super fit, and one of the sports I love is boxing. However it doesn’t matter what condition I was in, there was only going to be one winner, which was the water. It was hard and relentless.’
”there was only going to be one winner, which was the water” James likens the decision making in rugby to that on the water. You need to instinctively know what to do under pressure, and this comes from rigorous and repeated training. You can’t expect to know how to react. In the UK each year, around 160 people die at the coast. That’s more than the number of people killed in cycling accidents. Last year alone, 167 people lost their lives – the highest number in four years. The RNLI’s Respect the Water Campaign urges people to think about staying safe at the coast. Too often a day at the coast that’s meant to be an enjoyable trip turns to panic as someone
42
finds themselves in danger in the water. They’re swept out by a rip current, weakened by the effects of cold water, impaired by drinking alcohol or have simply swum too far out. In the best case, these scenarios end with a successful rescue by RNLI volunteer crews or lifeguards but, in the worst case, they can end in the tragic loss of life. Cycling safety campaigns make you stop and think: ‘I need to look out for cyclists while I’m driving’, or: ‘I must take care while I’m out on my bike.’ So as well as still enjoying exceptional coastlines we still want people to have safety at the forefront of their mind. The aim of the RNLI is to save lives at sea and halve the number of accidental UK coastal deaths in the next 10 years. The charity’s volunteer crews and lifeguards do a fantastic job, but the real key to achieving this aim is making people aware of the potential dangers at the coast and, importantly, encouraging them to take some simple steps to protect their own lives. Adult men account for the biggest number of coastal deaths – over the past four years they have accounted for over two-thirds of the fatalities. The advice the RNLI is offering should resonate with anyone heading to the coast but the charity hopes men, in particular, will realise they could be at risk from drowning if they don’t follow some basic but vital safety advice.
HOW ARE DEATHS CAUSED? •
You’d assume adrenaline sports and rough weather causes most deaths, but it’s casual, everyday use of the coast and sea. Swimming and general leisure use of the water accounted for 20% of last year’s coastal deaths.
•
Cold water shock is also a significant danger. It can set in at any temperature below 15oc. The UK sea temperature is cold enough year-round to trigger cold water shock.
•
Rip currents account for around two-thirds of the environmental-related incidents RNLI lifeguards respond to. A rip current can travel at 4.5mph –that’s almost the same speed as an Olympic swimmer – meaning they’re much faster and stronger than most swimmers can cope with. Panicking and trying to swim against currents is exhausting.
•
Slips, trips and falls while walking or running accounting for 32% of last year’s coastal deaths
•
Alcohol consumption is also a contributory factor in around one-fifth of coastal deaths. Don’t drink and swim.
RNLI’S KEY THETHE RNLI’S KEY ADVICE ADVICE IS: IS: •
Choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags, where you’ll have professional lifeguards looking out for you;
•
Don’t over-estimate your ability – even the strongest swimmers can tire quickly;
•
If you’re entering the water acclimatise gradually in shallow water;
•
If you get caught in a rip current, don’t panic or try to swim against it; swim parallel to the shore until you’re free;
•
If you’d like to enjoy an alcoholic drink at the coast, drink after swimming, not before;
•
To avoid falls, stay away from cliff edges, stick to pathways and read safety signs.

James was aware of all the advice from the RNLI when he joined the Abdu Dhabi Ocean (ADOR) Team on a Volvo Ocean 65 for a sailing expedition to test the ocean engineered country clothing. He survived the challenge and recalled, ‘however inviting the water looked, I had no idea of the temperature, the current or what was underneath. I had a new found respect for the water, and it curbed my desire to take risks.’ For more information visit

choosing the right base layer for the right environment is essential. you need the right weight and right technology. below explains what is needed:
ACTIVE BASE LAYER
GORE-TEX® MIDDLE LAYER
Designed to respond to your body to help keep you dry and comfortable for extended periods of high activity. The Active Base Layer is engineered with seamless panelling to offer various knits for organ protection or muscle support. High performance antibacterial fabric ensures fast wicking, quick drying properties.
This is the ultimate choice of middle layer and a favourite of ocean sailors to ensure the best breathability right through to the outer layer. Constructed from a lightweight rip-stop 2-layer GORE-TEX® Performance Shell fabric with a high-loft 240gms fleece lining, these garments are 100% waterproof with reinforced seat and knees.
THERMAL BASE LAYER
EXTREME THERMAL FLEECE
The Thermal Base Layer is fabricated from a fast wicking, low absorption fabric to transport moisture away from the skin and retain body heat in cooler climates. With flat-lock non-abrasive seams to reduce chafe.
For high performance heat retention in extreme cold conditions. The Extreme Thermal Fleece is fabricated from a high loft 240-weight Arctec fleece. Garments can be used as a next-to-skin base layer or as a secondary layer.

MUSTO EVOLUTION MULTI-SPORT MUSTO has extended the Evolution collection, building on the technical engineering generated by its sailing development. The garments can be used on or off the water, giving the range more of a multi-sport and multi-functional usage. The fabrics are designed and carefully selected for optimum activity performance: High SPF (Sun Protection Factor) for those used in warmer climates, fast-dry where absorbency is required, Polartec速, PrimaLoft速, fleece and/or GORE-TEX速 fabrics for cooler climates.

MUSTO’S
OWN ADVENTURE CAMERAMAN Hanging off cliffs. Kayaking down the Amazon. Climbing Mont Blanc. These are images we concoct when we think of life as a sports photographer especially one who’s been in the industry for 20 years. One man who knows exactly what it takes, not just the glamour, in fact no glamour, more like getting in to the freezing sea in the middle of the night to capture the full essence of a swimmers challenge, is Pete Webb.
68
Standard UK delivery is £4.95, see www.musto.com for all delivery information
Much of the creative presentation of our Autumn Winter 2014 and Spring Summer 2015 collections for evolution and lifestyle have been flavoured by Pete, his flare, creativity and left eye. Take a read of his thoughts on weather, clothing, the highlights and lowlights and decide if you’d prefer living his life or yours?
HOT TOPICS | 1. Bear Grylls or Ben Ainslie? It has to be Ben. There’s a racer in here.
2. Rain or Sun? Sun, but rain is so much fun.
3. What has been your biggest professional challenge? The photography business has changed beyond recognition, and now the biggest challenge is making sure your business can survive. A massive percentage of photographers no longer make all their money from just photography, and need to be creative and open to other ideas.
4. What’s the highlight of your career to date? I have been very fortunate to have many highlights, but every time I climb high into the mountains on a job and see that world, it’s always awesome.
5. What’s your favourite piece of kit? My favourite piece was probably my camper van, which I had to recently sell whilst I save for a new one!
6. What’s your best advice to a budding young sports photographer? I think in the beginning it’s really good to follow a single sport and get to know and understand it really well. I did this with windsurfing and it continues to open doors and bring new opportunities which I might not have expected.
7. What would you change in your career if you could? It must be having to do admin!!!
8. What piece of clothing can you not leave home without when you’re shooting outdoors? Waterproofs. Summer or Winter, no matter what the forecast, they really help for crawling around on the ground!
9. What have you been lucky to capture? One of the most creative destinations was shooting business owners in the Bahamas. We shot them whilst they worked, and there were some fantastic characters. A lady who ran a shark diving operation and president Nixon’s fishing guide who is now 90.
10. What do you like about MUSTO? I was lucky enough to be sponsored by a wetsuit company that were in the next office to MUSTO when they began. For me it’s the heritage. Their clothing has been going to very inhospitable places for a very long time and so they are constantly protecting people in their challenges.
11. Do you teach your kids about your profession? Yes, Finn who is 5 really loves taking pictures and does a very good job, he really can look and frame at 5.
12. What/who do you dream of shooting? I absolutely love shooting athletes in their environment and the more unusual the better.
13. What’s your favourite sport to photograph and why? If I could go back to shooting surfing I would. Just spending that time in the ocean and sat in a bar feeling salty with a cold beer at the end of the day is the best.
14. What irritates you most (in life or in your career)? Poor organisation.

Engineered using 3-layer GORE-TEX® Pro product technology for maximum ruggedness to withstand extended use in extreme conditions. The Ocean Technology® membrane is 3x thicker than the standard GORE-TEX® membrane and all components have strict performance specifications to ensure optimum strength.
Ideal for professional sports people who require waterproof protection over long periods of time in torrential downpour.
GORE™ Micro Grid Backer technology improves garment comfort and performance using an innovative internal backer fabric. This technology improves internal abrasion and snag resistance, enhances garment breathability and decreases garment weight. It also allows the garment to slide easily over mid-layers.
BR2 carries a minimum breathability standard of 10,000g/24hrs
BR2 is a MUSTO waterproof standard. BR2 products are waterproof to a minimum of 10,000mm, meaning water will not penetrate the fabric, even after five washes in the MUSTO lab.
Ideal for the active enthusiast who requires waterproof protection over a period of time in persistent downpour.
GORE-TEX Pro garments must pass Gore’s toughest test conditions and most aggressive rainstorm test. ®
BR1 is a MUSTO waterproof standard. BR1 products are waterproof to a minimum of 5,000mm. BR1 carries a minimum breathability standard of 3,000g/24hrs.
Constructed using 3-layer GORE-TEX® Pro product technology for superior breathability, durability and waterproofness. The garments are designed to be the best protection for prolonged periods facing foul weather conditions.
Modern sailboat racing has evolved into a high adrenaline, highly active performance sport. Technology at the top level does not end at yacht design; it has driven the need for complimentary equipment to help the boat go faster. Equipment such as sails, ropes, deck hardware and now clothing has emerged which is technologically advanced, ultra-lightweight and innovative. Musto has recognised this need and developed a DYNAMIC SYSTEM to meet the demands of the fast-paced professional sailing circuit.
MPX Race Garments feature Stretch GORE-TEX® fabric panels to offer greater freedom of movement for high activity racing. GORE-TEX® Pro garments must pass Gore’s toughest test conditions and most aggressive rainstorm test.
Musto Evolution garments have been stylishly designed to appeal to the active outdoor enthusiast, using performance fabrics and incorporating hi-tech features inspired by the technical sailing collections. Garments also follow the 3-layer system with base, middle and outer layers to suit the climate and activity undertaken.
Fabricated from a lightweight 3-layer GORE-TEX® for high activity sailing in warmer conditions. LPX garments are stripped-out and lightweight, just like performance sailing boats, are incredibly light, waterproof, durable and breathable protection. The LPX Dynamic uses the 3 layer GORE-TEX® PRO fabric and is more suitable to the highly active sailor, whilst retaining all the qualities and benefits of the LPX range.

GORE-TEX membrane Lining
GORE-TEX® fabrics are created by laminating a 100% waterproof GORE-TEX® membrane between high performance textiles which provide high levels of breathable and waterproof protection. The GORE-TEX® membrane is the heart of all GORE-TEX® products. It is completely windproof and waterproof, but permeable for water vapour. The result: Water from the outside will never penetrate, cold winds cannot pass through and perspiration can escape easily. This is why your body always stays dry and comfortable with GORE-TEX® products.

WHAT IS GORE-TEX® FABRIC? HOW DOES IT WORK? WATERPROOF
WINDPROOF
The structure of the GORE-TEX® membrane comprises of microscopic pores 20 times smaller than a drop of water which prevents water passing through.
Blocking any wind-chill, the GORE-TEX® membrane has been engineered to be durably windproof, keeping the wind out but allowing your skin to breathe.
BREATHABLE Pores in the GORE-TEX® membrane are 700x bigger than a water vapour molecule, allowing water vapour to easily pass through the membrane, keeping you dry and comfortable.
Standard UK delivery is £4.95, see www.musto.com for all delivery information
DURABLE Other fabrics can weaken with wear or washing. GORE-TEX® fabrics are designed to be durably waterproof, windproof and breathable to maintain performance for the useful life of the product.
RANGE DESCRIPTION | The WINDSTOPPER® membrane is an ultra thin protective layer which is laminated to a lightweight textile layer, making it totally windproof. It is made of the versatile polymer PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene) which is expanded to create a microporous structure. These micropores are 900 times larger than water vapor molecules, allowing perspiration to pass through unhindered. This means that the WINDSTOPPER® membrane adds total windproofness to any textile without perceivably restricting its initial breathability or weight.
Comfort and innovation are as intertwined as the fibers in our insulation. Together, they make it possible to fully “Feel the Performance” in any climate or condition. Originally developed to serve the needs of the U.S. Army, who desired water-resistant synthetic alternative to goose down, PrimaLoft Inc. is recognised globally as the proven leader and constant pioneer of innovative comfort solutions. PRIMALOFT® GOLD INSULATION The benchmark in performance of all synthetic insulations. High warmth-to-weight ratio means you don’t need bulk to stay warm. Water Resistant – absorbs less moisture so you stay warm and dry. Highly breathable, encouraging moisture and air to pass freely. Packs down easily for storage in small spaces or layering. Lightweight superior softness for great handfeel.
An innovative technology to waterproof garments where the standard manufacturing techniques based on seam-sealed waterproof fabrics cannot be utilised. The OutDry® patented lamination process is such that the waterproof and breathable membrane is directly bonded to the external layer of the garment, perfectly sealing any possible water entry point.
PHOTOLUMINESCENT TECHNOLOGY A process which absorbs light energy to create a luminous glow in the dark. The safety benefit of this technology was evident during the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race when sailors testing the reflectors felt more conspicuous to fellow crew members and as such enhanced their safety on board.
D3O®containing intelligent molecules is flexible and moves with the wearer yet locks together on impact- absorbing energy and providing superior protection. D3O® outperforms conventional soft foams of the same thickness on impact by up to six times.
PRIMALOFT® SILVER INSULATION A high performance insulation with the full spectrum of features to brave the elements.
COOLMAX® fabric is the performance fabric that includes an effective fiber-based moisture management system. The system can move perspiration away from the body, and through the fabric, where it can evaporate quickly, allowing the wearer to feel cooler and more comfortable.
PRIMALOFT SILVER INSULATION HI-LOFT Compressible high loft insulation, for absolute insurance in all conditions.
Smooth, comfortable, high performance antibacterial yarn which provides increased, freshness through effective antibacterial action using silver ion technology.
Arctec high loft fleece is a breakthrough in durable, personal insulation - trusted by our test team to preserve core body temperature and maintain optimum working muscle temperature, even in bitter Southern Ocean conditions. Arctec fleece is soft, lightweight, warm and comfortable. Tiny air pockets in the super high loft fabric structure retain body heat whilst the lightweight breathable properties ensure rapid moisture transfer - keeping you dry, comfortable and warm with minimum bulk. It is hyrophobic, holding less than 1% of it’s weight in water, it retains much of its insulating powers - even when wet - and highly breathable, allowing perspiration to readily pass through the fabric. These qualities make it ideal for making clothing intended to be used during extreme physical activity.
Superior warmth-to-weight performance Lightweight Breathable Fast wicking and quick dry Durable Water Repellent coating
Hollow-core fibre technology provides the most warmth at the lightest weight. The larger the surface area allows for faster evaporation by speeding moisture away from the skin to the surface of the fabric where it can evaporate more quickly.
A novel weave structure and denier produces sun protective properties. Fabrics have also been treated with chemicals effective at absorbing UV light during the manufacturing process. Care should be taken when washing this garment, to ensure detergents used boost UPF rating and increase garment life.
CORDURA® fabric provides rugged durable performance for a variety of end uses, including luggage, footwear and performance apparel. Products made with CORDURA® fabrics feature enhanced tear and abrasion resistance, and long-lasting durability which means a longer garment lifetime. CORDURA® fabric is constructed with qualifying yarns which are woven, dyed and finished in accordance with INVISTA’s approved fabric standards for the CORDURA® brand.
Hard wearing fabric using Kevlar®, an aramide fibre which is, gram for gram, five times stronger than steel.
