LIFE’S BETTER IN THE MOUNTAINS
Why choose us? Now in its third season, Fall Line's Summer Edition continues to be very well received. Our knowledge of active outdoors people, the places they go and the gear they use is deep. We’re used to giving them great stories and useful information in a very engaging manner. Fall Line has been doing this for over 30 years and our subscribers – those super-loyal, recurring readers we all crave more of – were very positive about getting the Fall Line take on summer. They see it as a continuation of the information and inspiration we deliver for their winter season. The Summer Edition is made by the same team who continue to deliver their knowledge of, and love for, the mountains and outdoor activities with the same attitude and approach that our Fall Line Adventure | Media Pack 2024
readers connect so readily to. For this coming season we have commissioned our exceptional team to explore Austria, France, Scandinavia and further afield. We work with alpine guides for their inside line on summer adventures and for those who want to push it a bit (lot!) further we talk to pros like Mark Beaumont and Courtney Dauwalter. Activities include hiking, wild swimming, trail running, mountain biking, SUP, climbing, camping, and more. As always, we know our readers get stuck in. They turn their research into action and engage with what they’ve read. They research across lots of different media, but as magazine readers they like – and here’s a word that’s too frequently abused – crafted stories. Words that are the
result of activity, research and skill. They are coupled with images captured by professional photographers who love their subject. The editorial team polish these packages to the exquisite form you see in our magazine, unashamedly holding high production values at its core. Settling into stories with quality information is where it starts for them. It leads to deep engagement and strong commitment. If these folk sound like your kind of customers, let's get in touch. Here’s to a strong summer.

SAINT-MARTIN-DE-BELLEVILLE, FRANCE
Why go? The second-highest paved pass in the Alps (at 2,757m, just seven metres lower than Val d’Isère’s Col de l’Iseran) is beloved by serious snowsports fans and cyclists alike. Once the pass reopens in late May each year so does the only summer-only ski area in the Alps. Road cyclists also flock to the intimidating road, with its 75 hairpin turns, which is an iconic stage of the annual Giro d’Italia race. While most remaining summer ski areas are now only open for a month or two in later spring, Stelvio still aims to stay open from mid-spring to late autumn, making it popular with race teams for a reliable training base. Trail running is another popular activity in the area. Don’t miss: 2023 marks 70 years since the Giro d’Italia first crossed the pass. While you need to be a world-class cyclist to compete in that, there is a day in late summer (this year 2 September) when the Stelvio Bike Day sees the pass again closed to motor vehicles and about 12,000 cyclists tackle it. stelvio.net
Why go? Popular in winter as arguably the most authentic ski-in/out village in the 3 Vallées, in summer Saint-Martin is promoted jointly with Les Menuires and Val Thorens, as the Vallée des Belleville. Gondola and chairlifts along with hiking and biking trails connect all three for the best of all worlds. Families are a big target audience with trampolining, summer sledging, zip lines, three leisure centres and locally made ice cream all here and more. The snow may have melted from the 600km of piste in the world’s biggest ski region, but the stat is echoed by adding the Belleville Valley’s 321km of biking together with the 300km of hiking trails. The Passeport Ascensionnel interactive pass unlocks it all with discounts on many activities. Don’t miss: Summer 2023 will have extra appeal as the region celebrates 60 years of the local Vanoise National Park. The activities carry on day and night with the option to enjoy some star gazing as a family with a local guide to make the most of the dark skies here. st-martin-belleville.com

Why go? With the tagline ‘the sunniest town in Switzerland’, the capital of Valais is a great base for exploring the wider region during the summer months. This very small city (population 30,000) has a 7,000-year history to explore, with a fabulous old town to meander around. It’s also home to Switzerland’s biggest bus station to ease your day trips out to nearby resorts like Crans-Montana and Verbier, with as much lift-accessed mountain biking and hiking as they have skiing in winter. Zermatt is about 75 minutes away if you want to summer ski. Local attractions include golf and equestrian activities, and there are lots of walking and cycling routes on your doorstep too, including one that leads you around the local vineyards. Don’t miss: If you’ve ever fancied surfing in land-locked Switzerland, now you can at Alaïa Bay (alaiabay.ch), the first wave pool of its kind in continental Europe with the tagline, ‘Surf the best waves in the Alps’. Gear rental, surf school and waves three to six feet high are all here. myswitzerland.com RATINGS:

The ski season pushes on year-round on the Hintertux Glacier
The best reviews
Objective, entertaining and wide-ranging tried-and-tested gear reviews created by our team of experienced and highly knowledgeable athletes and testers.
Why go? Just as the Ziller Valley, home to Mayrhofen and a dozen other great ski areas, is a white wonderland in winter, so it’s a green paradise for walkers and riders – of the bike variety – in summer. The Zillertal Activcard is available in three-day increments, giving summer lift access, free entry to the region’s six swimming pools, and free travel on most of the region’s public transport among other benefits. So, if you set off on one of the 1,400km of hiking trails in the valley and decide you’d rather ride the bus back to your accommodation, you can just hop on a bus. There are hiking (as well as biking) routes for all abilities from short family strolls to multi-day high-altitude adventures. Don’t miss: When Zermatt was forced to close its glacier slopes for nearly two months last summer as the sun melted the snow cover, the Hintertux Glacier became the last area still open for skiing and snowboarding year-round. It’s one of the larger summer areas too, with at least 12km, and often 20km, of slopes to enjoy. tyrol.com

6:30 I’m feeling smug, with no time wasted (or to spare), arriving at St Pancras 35 minutes before my train departs, waking up just half an hour before with the five-mile commute by city-sharing e-bike costing me a fiver and very little energy. Unencumbered by ski boots or bulky baggage, it’s the obvious mode of transport for stage-one of this

journey. That is, until the third member of our group arrives carrying his Brompton, having cycled 92 miles through the night from Peterborough. Talk about self-sufficient… 9:20 Location: Paris Gare du Nord. We’re en route to the French Alps by way of Eurostar and TGV, to Courchevel in the 3 Vallées. The group splits for leg three of the journey: a dash across the city to Gare de Lyon, for no real reason but competitiveness. One takes the RER, I walk the 5km, stopping for an espresso en route and feeling very free and unhindered by usual travel constraints, while the Brompton bikes it.

The Italian ex-ski racer and runner-up Freeride World Champion is used to living life in the fast lane. In summer she hits the brakes, climbing, highlining and growing her own veg
How long have you lived in Cortina d’Ampezzo? All my life. I spent a few winter seasons in France years ago to work as a ski instructor, but my home base will always be Cortina. Why base yourself here? Because there is no place like this for me. I have travelled a lot and Cortina remains the best place to live for my passion for the mountains. It might not be the resort known for the most amount of snowfall, but my eyes and body never get tired of this place. Tell us about your first experience of summer here... When I was a kid, I would spend my summers in Venezuela, as my mom grew up there, and then I’d return to Cortina each winter to train for ski alpine competitions (which, in theory, you never stop training for). Then, when I started climbing, I would spend my summers here in Cortina, climbing around with my friends or highlining (a slackline discipline that is practiced at great heights), and often, a combination of both! How would your ideal summer’s day be spent? I love multi-activity days. So the perfect day in summer would be a combination of my two favourite activities, which are climbing and highlining, with a bike approach or a swim in the lake if I’m lucky. Just thinking about it makes me excited for summertime! My perfect summer day wouldn’t be complete without good company too, because the activities I like require a rope partner at least to take part. What is your favourite climbing route and why? This is something I haven’t thought about before, but if I had to choose I’d pick the Spigolo Jori in the Pomagagnon mountains surrounding Cortina. It’s the first multi-pitch route I did when I started climbing and it’s one that I love

tanding near the bottom of the Krimml Falls, in the Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria’s Salzburgerland, I’m being gently drenched by the hanging cloud of mineral-infused water vapour. It’s not unpleasant, but deep mist inhalation is clearly nirvanic for the nearby circle of neo-yogis sitting cross-legged beside the thundering water. My guide and National Park Ranger Martha Hutter tells me the falls have been used as a water therapy treatment for allergies and asthma for over 200 years. It’s certainly the biggest steam room I’ve ever stood in.
A lesser-known region it may be, but not for long…
The Krimmler Ache River flows from glaciers 20km up the Ache Valley, before dropping, in three steps, 380m down into the Salzach River and eventually into the Black Sea. It’s the highest waterfall in Austria and marks the beginning of the new Panorama Trail, a 17-stage, 275km route east from Krimml to Hüttschlag, via Zell am See (well known to Fall Line winter readers). The new trail lies within the Hohe Tauern, the largest national park in Austria (1,834km²), the largest nature reserve in the Alps and home to the highest mountain in Austria, the
HELLY HANSEN
Sophie Nicholson chats to Phillip Tavell, VP of Outdoor for Helly Hansen, about the brand’s heritage and technical innovations Sophie Nicholson: Helly Hansen has been producing sailing, skiing and outdoor gear from its home in Norway since 1877. How did it all start? Phillip Tavell: It all started when Sea Captain Helly Juell Hansen discovered a better way to protect himself and his sailors from the harsh Norwegian elements. Soon after, he and his wife Margrethe launched a business producing waterproof oilskin jackets, trousers, sou’westers and tarpaulins made from coarse linen soaked in linseed oil – and the legend was born.
doing with friends. It’s a very nice route that is not too difficult, but is still nicely exposed in a Dolomitic environment and allows for a long day in the mountains. How do you relax here in summer? I love relaxing by taking care of my veggie garden mostly – I love to work the ‘land’, and I enjoy cooking, too. Also, going for a hike with a good book in my backpack and maybe a dip in a lake or river. My favourite wild swimming spot is Lake Federa, with its close up views of the Croda da Lago mountain chain.
SN: Other brands come and go, but Helly Hansen has remained at the top of the game for over 145 years. What are the key reasons for the brand’s longevity? PT: Like any company, Helly Hansen has had its highs and lows, but we have always come back to what is at the core of our brand – and that is the trust professionals put in our products. Our product and design teams work 365 days a year with these professionals to solve the real pain points they experience. Through feedback and insights from product testing and
Tell us something we don’t know about the place... There is a very solid and historical group called Regole, which you can only be a part of if you have parental roots from Cortina (with your last name). They have the control of the land care and many regulations within the valley. It is a ‘power’ that was given by the King, so is a very historical and recognised organisation here. What’s good to eat in Cortina d’Ampezzo? Everything! We have a high quality of restaurants and food here. The traditional Casunziei (beetroot-stuffed ravioli) are an absolute must – everyone needs to know about these. Favourite après-hike bar in Cortina d’Ampezzo? I love the mountain huts, and there are actually more of them than bars here! A favourite hut of mine is Averau, located under the rocky spears of Averau peak (2,649m) – it has beautiful views and serves excellent home-made pasta. There is a nice bar at the local climbing gym, called Cortina 360, which is great for the climbing community and has a great vibe.
development sessions, we create authentic innovations that make a difference in their day-to-day life. ‘Trusted by professionals’ is not just a slogan to us, it is built into the company’s decision-making every day.
Phillip is proud of the brand’s world-leading innovations, including its Life Pocket tech
SN: It’s fair to say the Nordics are home to some super successful ski and outdoor brands. Where does Helly Hansen fit in this mix? PT: There are a lot of great brands coming out of the Nordics. We have been able to protect our core business regions and, at the same time, carve out resources to expand growth opportunities in the USA and Canada. Many of our key products have a rich feature list with innovations that really make a difference for the consumer. Consumers who seek quality apparel appreciate our brand’s authenticity. SN: At FL we’re big fans of Helly’s smartphone battery-saving Life Pocket tech. Of all the innovations pioneered by HH, are there any you are particularly proud of? through our partnership with the Canadian alpine ski team. Our design and development team asked them what their most important feature on a ski jacket was and, to our surprise, they said a pocket for their phone. They all agreed battery lifespan in cold conditions was a challenge and that’s what sparked our interest. The current Life Pocket keeps the contents two to three times warmer than a regular pocket. Another first-to-market innovation we are very proud of is the introduction of the original Fiberpile (the first fleece). In 1961, the brand partnered with the Norwegian Fiber Pile Inc and developed a product that featured a high warmth to weight ratio that could maintain its thermal qualities even when wet. Favoured by lumberjacks and outdoor enthusiasts, we now see it everywhere. It gives me goosebumps knowing our brand was the founder of such an iconic product. SN: Technical innovation is very important, but so is sustainability. Is it genuinely possible to create long-lasting, high-performance products using recycled materials and sustainable processes? PT: The short answer is yes, we need to find long-term solutions that marry both aspects. Working with our professional partners enables us to draw insights from their wear and tear to create higher quality products with longevity that exceeds the consumer’s intended product lifecycle. That in itself is a huge environmental benefit by saving the footprint it takes to create new products. Another example is our Lifa Infinity Pro technology. Through advanced textile engineering and development, Lifa Infinity Pro delivers extreme waterproofing and breathability without any added chemical treatments.
