Attempted Sinking of the USS Liberty
The USS Liberty was a United States spy ship operated by the Navy. Instead of cannon it bristled with radio antennas. Of the crew of 294 over 100 were radio operators, recording equipment operators, and cryptographers.
The story of Israel’s attempt to sink the USS Liberty is complicated by the fact that Israel was not alone in the villainy. After Israel began the attack, President Johnson’s administration refused to interfere with what Israel was doing. And afterwards both Israel and the U.S. government tried to cover-up what actually happened.
The story of Israel’s attack is incomplete without the story of the U.S. government’s complicity. They ended up partners in the crime.
