IT IS TIME TO SHIFT. The making of MADE Magazine has been in creation for longer than I have known. As a passionate entrepreneur, I am grateful to wake up each day to discover new truths, to learn from new experiences and to witness the journeys of other like-minded individuals. Over the years, through a series of losses and wins, I shifted my mindset as I discovered new and relevant information on my journey to achieving my goal of being able to say that I “Made It”. After dismissing prior information, past experiences and old philosophes, I realized the “truth” was not in the results of the past, but in the possibilities of the future. Each of us has a God-given gift that we are responsible for sharing with the world while on Earth. We cannot hold our talents hostage. Over time, my perception of possibilities changed because the meaning and purpose of my life was discovered. I realized that everything that made me who I am over the years was preparation to help motivate us all to be better people in the future through the work you’re about to see. Although the intention of MADE is to distribute meaningful and entertaining content, the bigger goal is to encourage everyone to plunge into a broader stream of consciousness from this day forward. This is encouragement to be open to new ideologies and opinions different than what is familiar, no matter what generation you belong to. Do not allow limitations of what others have told you or what you have convinced yourself of over time to dictate what you can and cannot achieve. Once our perceptions are shifted, the possibilities of the future are endless. Welcome to a growing journey to becoming MADE.

GRIT & GRACE: CHICAGO The complexity it takes to make it in a city full of contrasts

MADE BY: BENJI AIRD

On the subject of Chicago, history tells a transformative story of a small town turned global city. The people of Chicago have lived through devastating fires, political scandals and mobsters all with grit, tenacity and grace.

and thrive amongst so many distinctions. Those same contrasts appear in business. The early bird catches the worm, yes, but truly successful Chicagoans also know that the night owl gets the prey.

insanity and the verge of massive success. Dealing with the constant reality of those two extremes requires not only grit, but consistent grace. Grit bleeds into everything we do, it is who we are.

Present day, Chicago is a city Markets are highly competitive Grace, on the other hand, is full of contrasts. Sometimes and for many businesses, it’s what maintains us. Grace is sunny and playful, often gloomy about operating on the edge of what allows the city’s sharp and fierce, the city contrasts to exist is a constant reharmoniously and minder of the grit When you can acknowledge the necessity not destructively it takes to survive within an

of grit and the presence of grace, many obstacles that were previously thought to be impossible turn out to be attainable. When you attach this concept to a hearty business acumen, that’s the formula for success. And that’s how we’ve made it.

U’Mamble’s Golden Tribe MADE BY: BRENTTON “BOWE” WILSON

These days, it seems that the dichotomy between what’s old and what’s new has made it difficult for the two ideologies to peacefully coexist. In this month’s issue we use fashion, style and a unique narrative to integrate a contemporary gold aesthetic into traditional tribal wear. Take a peek inside as designers mix natural, earthy tribalism with lustrous golden hues to produce powerful images and proving once and for all that old and new ideas can coexist peacefully, if not beautifully.

12

Once upon a time, in the golden kingdom of U’Mable, the lifelong battle between old and new ideologies began when the king and queen abandoned U’Mable’s tribal roots in favor of a lustrous, golden paradise.

13

Unfortunately, citizens who refused to follow the king and queen were banished and sent to live a traditional tribal life outside of the kingdom’s walls.

14

And then, the rebellion came. Warriors Li and Celi came forward to enact change within the golden kingdom. Instead of segregating the people of U’Mamble the warriors’ sought to integrate everyone by combining the strength of the old, with the soft shine of the new.

Li and Celi merged the traditions of the tribes with the golden glitter of the kingdom in unique and surprising ways, adding gold jewelry to their traditional ensembles and applying golden war paint to their skin.

The warriors’ battle was won and the fusion of old and new styles continues to reign in U’Mamble today, creating a brighter and more diverse future for all.

IT GIRL FILES: Erica Campbell helps herself to solo success beyond Mary Mary MADE BY: AJ LINTON

We luh Erica Campbell. You don’t luh Erica Campbell? What’s wrong with chu? The “I luh God” gospel powerhouse is pushing the envelope in the sound of Gospel music after pushing past the success of her multiple Grammy Award®-winning duo, Mary Mary, to achieve her own success as a Grammy Award®-winning solo artist. Mix in a hit WETV reality show, appropriately titled ‘Mary Mary’ with sister/band mate Tina Campbell, re-releasing her debut album as HELP 2.0 and collecting a Dove Award, Stellar Awards and other top honors, it’s easy to see how she is Gospel music’s shining star. For Erica, her life as an IT GIRL wouldn’t be possible without a little more Jesus. Well, a lot of Jesus actually. MADE: What does being an IT GIRL mean to you? ERICA: An IT GIRL is the go-to girl, the young lady who shines bright. She’s a smart and self-aware girl. MADE: What’s advice would you give young up and coming IT GIRLs looking for their purpose? ERICA: Seek God like it’s a job. At some point in your 20s, you really need to stop and go find yourself without any noise from the outside. Turn everything else off. Seek God and listen to his voice. You can’t be seeking God and your mind is crowded by a million other things. You’ve got to get the noise out of your ears and listen. I know it’s easy to look at Instagram or Twitter, but I promise it’ll take you right off track. Sometimes you have to have concentrated, intentional, purposeful God time. That’s the time where you listen to what He’s saying to you. Through Him, you should find what you love most and what you want to.

20

MADE: Sometimes, even the girls who have it all together need a little help. What low points in your life inspired your music and how did you keep the faith? ERICA: Well, 2013 was a rough year. My sister (Tina Campbell of Mary Mary) had some challenges in her marriage, we were being sued by our former manager, I was beginning my solo career and we found out that our father had cancer. There was a ton of intense media scrutiny. On the Internet, I remember reading more than a few mean comments about my solo career online. It was a lot to handle. At a certain point I had to think, ‘God said he wouldn’t put more on you than what you can bear’, so He must think I’m incredibly strong. And I thought ‘God, if you think I’m incredibly strong then just give me a little bit more of what you have so I can have the strength to endure.’

I try my best not to ask God to take the bad things away because trials and tribulations usually come for a reason. Without difficulties the benefits of life, things like becoming stronger or wiser or better, are nearly impossible. God has a way, even in your darkest days, of letting a little sunshine come through. God is really doing some awesome things and those things were born it in the craziest year of my life. MADE: You’ve already made a strong name for yourself in the industry. What inspires and motivates you to keep going? ERICA: What inspires me the most is God’s will being done in my life. I look at my long list of goals and the number 1 thing is to please God. I think there is a directive from God to all of us, which is to live out our destiny, leave a legacy for our children and make an impact on the world for Him. The cool thing about making an impact on the world for Him is that we reap a benefit. There’s a feeling of joy when you realize you went for something that was challenging, conquered it and made it happen. Those are the things that I really strive for and look at. MADE: That’s beautiful. What else is on your list of goals? After pleasing God, of course… ERICA: I’m currently reading scripts and I actually have a project with Wendy Raquel Robinson titled “Mysterious Ways”. My husband, Warryn Campbell, and I have started a bible study that will eventually become a church. My new music is coming, my children are wonderful and the light of my life. I’m also starting a women’s ministry with my mother-in-love called the Fresh Wives Club, it’s for young married and single women who want to learn how to be a godly wife; someone cool, fly and sexy- yet holy. I want to share as much as I possibly can because I’ve been married for 14 years now.
