Welcome to our Family Health, Bumps & Babies issue!

Once upon a time, a naive and well intentioned young mother (well 27 is kinda young) decided to be the BEST and most NATURAL mother EVER… not realising this was in fact a combination of trying to live up to unrealistic standards for women, a hangover from my own alternative upbringing and a few genuinely good practices. Whilst I did use and abuse coconut oil to the point where we all gag if we get a whiff of it, breastfeeding was really handy and I can highly recommend it (if it is something you want to do). Once I mastered the logistics of how to feed my newborn under the expert eye of my nurse I was saved from at least 50 situations where I had forgotten every single thing my child needed except their food (as it was attached to my chest).

The other handy by-product of a hippy lifestyle is that long flowing skirts and dresses can be an emergency diaper if times are desperate enough.

For those of you trying to work and juggle expressing milk, a baby and a head full of ideas then you will need this issue with it’s invaluable tips from people who have worked it all out. You can also collect a few tips for fast eco-cleaning (coconut oil makes everything greasy) and select a sport for your kid who may NOT be a team player (I respect that position, passing the ball sucks).

CHEAPER KINDY FOR QUEENSLAND FAMILIES The cost of kindy is a huge barrier for many working families, but more than 40,000 Queensland children are set to benefit from reduced price – and even free – kindy thanks to a more than $1 billion investment from the Queensland Government.

Education Minister Grace Grace said the package also includes an expansion of the Kindy Uplift program and extra funding for children with disabilities.

The reforms will kick in at the start of 2023 and will be a welcome relief for many families.

Nature Deficit Disorder CURE:

Get Outside!

Compared to your own childhood, do you think your kids spend less time outdoors?

Nature Deficit Disorder – a phrase first coined by Richard Louv in 2005 – is not a medical diagnosis, but its effect on health is certainly noticeable. Spending too much time indoors, under artificial light and in limited company, results in diminished use of the senses, increasing short-sightedness, vitamin D deficiency, and reduced resilience and ability to cope with stress.

Luckily, there is a cure – get outside!

A dose of “Vitamin N” Being outdoors is so GOOD for kids, with benefit that last a lifetime. Here are some of the positive effects Vitamin N (for Nature!) can have on your kids.

PROBLEM SOLVING Outside play sparks a child’s imagination and creativity. There are endless ways to play outdoors, and as props are created from their surroundings, their problem-solving skills are developing.

STIMULATE THE SENSES What an amazing array of sights, sounds, smells, and textures to explore in nature! From sunset reflections on water to multicoloured birds, the sough of wind through branches to frog calls, the petrichor of wet earth to the scent of wild flowers, and the feel of rough bark to grass under bare feet. What way to stimulate and develop the senses!

PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT Climbing, sliding, leaping, and swinging through the great outdoors – with heaps of fresh air to oxygenate the muscles – has an immense benefit to physical health and development. All that movement will also develop coordination, gross motor skills, and balance. And your child will be having so much fun they won’t even realise they’re exercising!

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT Assessing heights and distances, observing weather and wildlife activity, noticing changes in trees from season to season – they’re all subtle ways your child is developing cognition and awareness.

Your child will feel more connected to the environment, leading to healthier choices as they grow.

RESILIENCE Being outdoors often throws up challenges.

There may be no immediate bathroom access, no snacks or water tap, a sudden rain shower or drop in temperature, a bump or scrape that can’t be immediately tended… Coping with these minor challenges will help your child learn to cope with bigger challenges later in life.

Outdoor adventures There’s a great big wonderful world of adventure waiting to be discovered, but adventures can be small too! Here are some of our favourite ways to enjoy spending time in nature.

Family Health BACKYARD SAFARI Exploring amongst the plants of your own backyard or nearby park opens a micro-world of intriguing industry. Grab a book about Australian insects from the local library and see if you can spot different ants creating trails and carrying food back to the nest, or our tiny native stingless bees.

You might spot caterpillars or pupae, shy skinks, or colourful Christmas beetles. Encourage your child to identify what you find and use their imagination to make up stories about what the little creature’s life and adventures might be like.

Dragonfly larvae, tadpoles, and maybe tiny fish are all possibilities.

PLANT A GARDEN Form a connection with nature by nurturing it!

Turning over soil to plant seeds, providing the right levels of shade and moisture, and the joy of seeing things grow can be very fulfilling. You could grow flowers that encourage bees and pollinators, vegetables and fruits for the kitchen, or native plants that provide food for wildlife.

TAKE A HIKE

POOH STICKS This was a favourite game of Winnie the Pooh. If you live near a creek or spillway with a bridge, Pooh Sticks is a race to see whose twig can float from one side of the bridge to the other the fastest.

This game can also be played from point to point along a creek bank (under adult supervision) if you don’t have a bridge nearby.

Exploring parklands, mountain trails, rainforests, and waterfalls is the best way to connect with nature. Nature endures with constant new growth, diverse wildlife, ever-changing landscapes, and amazing views! Hiking as a family also encourages communication and bonding and keeps the whole family healthy.

BUILD A DEN Kids love a secret space to be the base of their adventures.

Dens can be made under low-hanging trees, or wigwam style from fallen branches. With a few logs to act as furniture, a den can be quite a cosy cubby.

TREASURE HUNT Let your kids loose with a list of “treasure” to find. Suggestions could be 3 gumnuts, a bottlebrush leaf, a feather, a piece of fallen paperbark. A tick-list of things they spot can include wildlife and insects too that are left in place and not collected.

POND DIPPING Tie some string securely around the neck of a jar, and dip it into a pond. What will your child spot in the water?

NON-TOXIC WAYS TO CLEAN Admit it. No one likes cleaning the oven... or the bin … or the fridge. You know that washing machine filter? It’s gently calling your name. Whatever you do, don’t despair! We’ll show you some simple and effective ways to tackle these gross tasks, and we do it in a not so gross (or toxic!) way.

MAKING YOUR OVEN CLEAN AND SPARKLY It’s got cheese stuck all over it, baked on black stuff, and the seals are not looking too happy. Before you go to town with “odourless oven spray” that magically wipes off - and leaves the most horrid residue imaginable - grab yourself a whole lot of bicarb and vinegar. I promise you; it works a treat.

Remove the oven racks and set aside.

I n a small bowl, mix a 1/2 cup of bicarb with a few tablespoons of vinegar.

Adjust the ratio of both until you have a spreadable paste. It’s fizzy, but that’s a good thing! pread the paste all over the inside of S your oven, keeping clear of the heating elements. The baking soda will turn a brownish colour as you rub it in; that is fine. Coat the whole oven to the best of your abilities, paying attention to any particularly greasy areas.

CLEANING YOUR KITCHEN BIN Do the same to your oven racks on the sink or in the backyard. You can easily hose these off later. eave the paste in the oven overnight, L or for at least 12 hours.

After 12 hours or overnight, take a damp cloth and wipe out as much of paste as you can. Use a plastic or silicone spatula to help scrape off the paste, and use a toothbrush to get into hard-to-reach spots.

Spray a little water to get the last bits off and wipe down. Repeat until all the baking soda residue is gone. Add more water or vinegar to your cloth as needed to really get the oven clean and shiny.

Replace the oven racks and you’re done!

Even if you have fragrant garbage bags, take out the rubbish on time, and wipe the top every week, bins just get bad. The plastic holds smells and bacteria so every now and again they demand a good go-over for the sake of your kitchen and the health of your family. Cleaning the kitchen bin can be done just like the fridge vegetable bins – outside.

Take your bin outside (with the rubbish removed!) and give it a rinse down with the hose to remove any stuck-on food.

Give it a liberal spray of vinegar and eucalyptus oil mix – this will kill lots of bacteria – and let it sit for 10 min.

Give it all a good scrub with a dishwashing brush and rinse it all off.

Make sure the bin is thoroughly dry before taking it back inside, otherwise mould can begin to grow.

Once it’s dry, line with a garbage bag and she’s ready to rock!

CLEANING AND DEODOURISING YOUR FRIDGE Sometimes delving into the fridge is a task we ignore for months. That is, until you can sense that something is growing a colony down there, somewhere. Cleaning your fridge is like a revelation. Suddenly life is great, fresh and sparkly! You’ll also wonder why you didn’t do it earlier.

After you have removed everything from your fridge and thrown out all of the items you no longer want, take

CLEANING YOUR WASHING MACHINE FILTER

As a part that is meant to be cleaned, the filter is usually pretty easy to get too. If you don’t clean it regularly, you may end up finding dark grey spots and a funky smell on your clothes. Refer to your operator’s manual if you are not sure where your filter is, or how to remove it.

If you’re serious about ditching the chemicals, bicarbonate of soda, white vinegar, eucalyptus oil, lemon juice, and pure beeswax can get most jobs done. It worked for our grandparents, and it can work for you too! the shelves and containers into your backyard.

Lay them out and squirt some ecofriendly dishwashing liquid on them.

Give them a quick spray with the hose and go over all the edging, nooks, and crannies with a dishwashing brush (bamboo brushes are great!).

Once they’re all done, rinse off and lean them against a wall to drip dry before finishing them with a tea towel.

Grab a bucket before you start anything, and turn the kettle on.

Remove the filter and put it in the bucket. The hardest part it over now – YAY! Pour in some white vinegar and hot water and let it soak for 30 minutes.

This will allow the grime to loosen and fall away.

Give the inside of the fridge a general wipe down with some soapy water, removing all the crumbs. Once it’s clean, spray with a vanilla mix (1 cup water, ¼ cup rubbing alcohol, 1½ tablespoons vanilla extract) and your fridge will be brand new and smelling fantastic!

Return the sparkling clean shelves and go treat yourself with some gourmet products that will be more than happy to live in a nice new clean home!

Once it’s soaked, empty all the water and the filter into the sink and rinse off the gunk with fresh water.

If there is any left-over grime, use an old toothbrush to scrub it off.

Place the sparkly new filter back into the machine and repeat for any other washable filters you may have in the machine, dryer, or vacuum cleaner.

SENSORY FRIENDLY BRISBANE Sensory issues can make it a challenge to find a fun and supportive way to allow your child to explore and learn in an environment in which they feel comfortable. If you are looking for ways to get out and about with your sensory child, there are plenty of fun and sensory-sensitive places around Brisbane that provide a welcoming experience.

SENSORY FRIENDLY MOVIES

Cinemas can be a little overwhelming to those with sensory issues.

The darkness, loud noises, and the lack of ability to move freely can be quite stressful to children and parents.

Sensory-friendly screenings involve the lights being only slightly dimmed, sound being lowered, and the ability to move freely around the cinema. So where can you find these screenings?

These screenings occur regularly at Event and Hoyts cinemas, but screening times differ at each venue so be sure to check it out before you go!

ANIMAL EXPERIENCES

NATURE EXPERIENCES

If animals aren’t exactly your child’s forte, a visit to one of Brisbane’s Discover Centres offers a tactile and sensory educational experience. Downfall Creek Bushland Centre offers a Mountains to Mangroves Sensory trail with information boards inviting your child to touch, listen, and smell along the way. The trail is wheelchair accessible, with continuous handrails and interpretive signs that include braille and raised text. It’s the perfect way to get out with friends and family, whilst making it a fun and inclusive experience for your child.

Working with animals and surrounding oneself with nature can help a lot of people with sensory disorders. One such place to help children using animals is EquusTerra Therapeutic Horse Riding, located in Yeronga. Each lesson students get to interact with a horse and be involved in a range of activities such as grooming, feeding and riding. An environment like this can help form a bond and trust between the student and animal in a supportive domain.

ART PLAY DATES

Children are such creative young minds with lots of colourful ideas, so why not encourage it! Art play dates are run at QAGOMA in Brisbane city. Sessions are scheduled fortnightly on Tuesdays from March to May 2022. This event is run for 1- to 3-year-olds so it’s perfect for your excited tots! Each session includes a tour focusing on a sensory experience, with song and dance included to encourage children. This event is ticketed so be sure to book in advance!

QAGOMA also runs low-sensory days throughout the year, where lights and sounds are lowered. For “any day” visits, the gallery is usually much quieter after 2pm.

Family Health MARSDEN LIBRARY SENSORY SPACE

This is a wonderful safe space for sensory exploration, designed for children aged 0-12 years. There are lots of hands-on, audial, and visual activities for children to suit specific sensory needs. If sensory stimulation becomes too much, the beautiful bubble tube is there to calm and soothe. The library staff may also dim the lights in the area for you too, if required.

CITY PLAYSCAPES QUEENSLAND MUSEUM

Queensland Museum is also much quieter after 2pm, though the museum is very accommodating whatever time you visit. Noise cancelling headphones and Sensory Kits are available from the cloakroom, and a sensory map advises which exhibits are busy, bright, and noisy, and which are quiet and dimly lit.

The Museum’s Discovery Centre offers a tactile experience for children who love to touch and feel texture, and SparkLab Sciencentre also has sensory sessions and a Social Story on their website to help you plan your visit.

Brisbane City Council’s playground are designed for all children to enjoy. They may get busy and noisy at times, so plan your visit around your child’s needs and you will find a wealth of sensoryfriendly and accessible equipment.

Senses can be stimulated or soothed with tactile sensory panels, sand and water play, and nest swings.

Individual Sports for Kids

Being active and healthy doesn’t have to run to a team schedule. There are so many sports your child can enjoy that don’t require minimum numbers, or league competitions, or inflexible training times.

Individual sports provide heaps of opportunity for building strong friendships with like-minded individuals, and even individual sports can require an element of teamwork when an opponent or partner is required.

Find your child’s perfect fit with these individual sports.

Golf Fresh air, a good walk, conversation, and heaps of unexpected health benefits! Golf is low intensity and non-contact, minimising risk of injury. It helps growing bodies develop a strong core and spine, improves hand-eye coordination, and has the surprising added benefit of staving off short-sightedness.

In a world of excess screen time and instant gratification, golf promotes quiet time, patience, endurance, and emotional control.

It can be played alone, with friends, and even in teams.

Sailing Being out on the water is exhilarating. Children who sail learn responsibility and accountability, as well as patience, courage, and a healthy awareness of changing weather!

Sailing as a solo sport is best suited to older kids who have had full training and will be fully supervised, but kids can start learning to sail in Brisbane from six years old.

There’s no real age limit to golf. Children can play from a young age and enjoy the game alongside players of all ages.

The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron runs school holiday programs and all-year-round programs for children as well as private lessons, and you can find other “Learn to Sail” providers on the bayside and the Brisbane River.

There are golf courses all over Brisbane for fun and practice, and professional lessons are available at the beautiful Victoria Park in Herston.

You don’t need to own your own sailboat as the clubs have just the right-sized boat for your child, with all safety equipment provided.

You just need to provide the sun protection and the towel.

Martial Arts There are many martial art disciplines to choose from: judo, karate, hapkido, and taekwondo are the ones most people are familiar with.

Some focus on strikes and kicks, some on throws, and some are allrounders for self-defence. All have great benefits!

Martial Arts don’t teach aggression. The focus is on self-discipline and self-control, with a side effect of improved self-esteem and selfconfidence. There’s a lot of self-improvement in self-defence!

Martial arts are available to children aged 4 years and up. Not all martial arts involve sparring or tournaments, and your child can progress through their belt levels at their own pace. Take a look around to see what’s available near you, and which would best suit your child.

Tennis

Tennis is a sport that develops the whole body. It can help children develop gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination and ball tracking, agility, flexibility, speed, and strength. It’s also accessible to anyone who can hold a tennis racket – just ask 2022 Australian of the Year, Dylan Alcott!

Ice Skating

Running truly is an individual sport. You can set your own start time, distance, and venue, or choose to run at organised events like Parkrun or one of Brisbane’s annual running festivals.

Running comes naturally to kids on the playground, but running as a sport requires stamina and resilience. It’s incredible for cardiovascular fitness, and running releases endorphins in the brain, which make us feel good!

The whole family can enjoy running together, and the only equipment you need are some good running shoes and comfortable clothes.

The upside is that your child will develop incredible confidence and character. It takes a great deal of perseverance to master a new Freestyle trick, and strategic thinking and determination to be a champion on the tracks.

There are BMX racing clubs across Brisbane, and even structured BMX Freestyle lessons from professional coaches that your child can take part in.

Swimming Swimming is an excellent activity for fun and fitness. It exercises the whole body and provides a gateway to a huge range of water-based activities. Not only that, learning to swim can save lives!

Swimming really is a sport for all ages, with water-familiarity lessons available for babies from around four months of age, and formal swimming lessons available to pre-schoolers.

The many benefits of swimming include improved muscle tone, improved cognitive ability, improved coordination, and better sleep and appetite.

There is no shortage of fantastic public pools and swimming schools in Brisbane, and some have wheelchair ramps right into the water to make this great individual sport accessible to everyone.

Helping Brisbane’s Homeless Homelessness is growing issue in Australia.

The 2016 census identified just over 116,000 people deemed homeless across Australia. Over 8,000 people sleep rough every night on a piece of concrete, on a bench, in a park or under a bridge.

What people may not know is that hundreds of people lose their life every year as a direct result of sleeping rough. The average life expectancy in 2022 in Australia for someone long-term sleeping rough is just 47 years of age.

This was unacceptable to Norm McGillivray, and he had to do something about it. Norm’s desire to help homeless people comes from memories of his own father’s homelessness in the UK where he grew up.

His motivation stems back to his childhood in the 1970s, when he was a very young fella. His happily married father was a carpenter who also had a shopfitting business. When he was in his early 30s he suffered a stroke that left him disabled and impeded his speech.

Effectively that was the end of the business. Norm was about two years old. Norm believes that this put a lot of strain on his parents’ relationship, and when they separated and divorced, his dad found himself homeless on the streets of London.

At the age of 42 Norm’s dad suffered a heart attack. He died lonely and still homeless. Norm was 11 years old at the time and powerless to do anything about it.

40 years later, Norm is the founder of the organisation Beddown, through which he hopes to help someone else’s dad, mum, daughter, son, brother, or sister.

The idea of Beddown is simple: take empty and underutilised existing infrastructure such as car parks, offices, backpackers’ hostels, and community halls, and activate those spaces into accommodation to provide safety, shelter, security, services and a great night’s sleep for their guests. All guests are people who are homeless and sleeping rough, who are welcomed to a Beddown just like a friend or family member.

A big part of the Beddown model is to collaborate with other charities and services so a variety of value-adding services can be offered to their guests, such as:

Dentists Clothing and Laundry These services look to restore dignity, respect, self-esteem, and confidence back to the guests, and to use Beddown as a platform to help guests into a longer-term solution such as accommodation, employment, or rehabilitation.

Beddown’s last trial was in an underutilised Secure Parking car park in Brisbane CBD for 8 weeks. The site was activated nightly by Beddown’s volunteer family, with 21 queen sized beds made up in the sleeping area every night.

Beddown helped provide over 800 nights of safety, shelter and sleep for their guests, whose ages ranged from 19 to 60. They were supported by nearly 400 volunteers over the 8 week period and had the assistance of 33 collaborative service providers.

5 of their guests secured employment, 5 secured accommodation, and 1 guest entered rehabilitation during their stay at Beddown.

Next for Beddown is the activation of an underutilised backpackers’ in Brisbane, which is hoped to be operational in April this year.

Beddown looks to change people’s lives and save people’s lives, which all starts with a safe place to get a good night’s sleep.

Breastfeeding and returning to work

Many women in Australia return to work within the first two years of their baby’s lives. For some women, the choice to return to work is about what fulfils them and helps them feel they are more present as mothers. Other women find that limited paid maternity leave can force them back into the workforce for financial reasons. If you are still breastfeeding your child, returning to work does not mean you have to stop.

Parenting SUCCEEDING AT BREASTFEEDING AT WORK Whatever the basis for returning to work, it can feel especially daunting if you are still breastfeeding your baby, however, with preparation you can continue to breastfeed and/or feed your baby with expressed breast milk. As part of your plan for returning to work it is crucial to have discussions with your partner about your goals for feeding, as their support will ultimately increase your chances of succeeding.

There are some key elements of support that you will also need from your workplace; understanding work colleagues, a private space where you can breastfeed your baby or express breastmilk, and allocated time where you can feed or express. These discussions may be useful to have before you have your baby so some plans can be put into place and a return-to-work policy for breastfeeding either be created or reviewed. Some workplaces may have been accredited by the Australian Breastfeeding Association as a “Breastfeeding Friendly” workplace, which will help to make the return to work easier for both you and your baby.

expressing milk to be quick, simple and effective, so the purchase or hire of a good quality pump is essential. An electric pump will express milk more easily but there are good manual pumps available too to suit your budget.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS You will also need to consider the best times to express your milk as most women find, depending on the age of their baby and their usual feeding times, that the quality and quantity of their milk is different throughout the day. It is also helpful to be relaxed and comfortable when expressing to allow your milk to “let down”. Another consideration is the cleanliness of your hands, the equipment you use to express, sterile storage containers, and a refrigerated space to keep the expressed milk fresh and safe.

Sometimes the change to your usual routine and feeding can affect your milk supply, however, supply issues may be avoided by the consideration of taking a recommended supplement for breastfeeding in addition to eating a good healthy diet and plenty of fluids. Your baby’s “normal” feeding patterns may also change, with your baby wanting to feed more often when they are with you.

OPTIONS FOR EXPRESSING BREASTMILK AT WORK If you are not able to breastfeed your baby in the workplace but still want your baby to have breastmilk, you may want to look at your options for expressing your milk. Hospital Bag Guide In the last trimester of pregnancy, I found myself wandering the aisles of a department store looking for something I’d never bought before.

Past the long, floral nighties and embroidered cardigans was the underwear section. Hanging innocently off the rack were the black, cotton full briefs with a high waist, $15 for a pack of five.

I eyed them doubtfully … friends had assured me these would be essential after I gave birth. Really? I popped two packs into my trolley and ticked ‘Big Black Granny Undies’ off the list.

As it turned out, my friends were right.

If you’re pregnant for the first time and have no idea what to pack in your hospital bag, I guarantee you’re not alone – I had no clue either.

When compiling your list, it’s a good idea to break it into two sections: luxuries and necessities. What will make your stay that little bit more comfortable and what is essential?

• Your birth plan if you have one

Luxuries are the items specific to you; things that make you feel happy and relaxed. Having these in the birthing suite may help boost your mindset during labour and childbirth. Ideas include things such as your favourite music, essential oils, photos of loved ones, little treats like chocolate or crackers, a soft bath robe, massage lotion, lip balm, eye mask, ear plugs, books and magazines, your own fluffy towel and a comfortable pillow from home or nursing pillow to make breastfeeding more comfortable.

Then there are the essential items.

• Medicare/Private Health Insurance cards • Phone and charger • Socks • Spare clothes — you’ll have your blood pressure regularly checked, so clothing with short / loose sleeves makes this easier.

• Black, cotton Bridget Jones-style underwear (It’s not uncommon to have heavier-than-normal bleeding following childbirth.)

• Pyjamas (A style that buttons all the way down the front are a good idea if you’d like to breastfeed.)

Your partner or support person will also need a few things for the stay too, which may include a change of clothes, swimwear if they’d like to hop in the shower with you, as well as closed shoes which can be a requirement in some hospital rooms.

• Swimmers — you may be able to take showers during the labour if you want/if time allows • Bathroom essentials, i.e. toothbrush/toothpaste/shampoo/ conditioner/ face cleanser, face and body moisturisers • Makeup and nice clothes to wear home (You may like a photo of this ‘momentous occasion’ as you leave the hospital with your first child.)

• Maternity pads • Nursing pads • Nursing bras • Nipple cream (if you plan to breastfeed)

Of course, don’t forget about the baby! It’s a good idea to check what your hospital provides so you don’t pack too much — for example, some hospitals provide nappies and wipes. In addition, you’ll need enough baby singlets, sleep suits and socks for your stay. Some mothers also prefer to bring their own baby blankets and swaddles.

OTHER IMP O RTANT ITEMS Try to put the baby’s car seat into the car well before your due date. The first time you work out how to fit it safely can be time consuming and/or stressful, so it’s a good idea to do this when you’re not in a rush.

Finally, during that last trimester ensure you always have ample fuel in your car … having to make a pit stop at the service station on your way to hospital isn’t ideal!

with your baby 3 Ways to Do Music with your Baby at Home I remember the days when I had a toddler and a baby - my children were only 16 months apart and it was certainly a challenge to leave the house. There was no way I could commit to a weekly music class.

Negotiating different sleep times, nappy changes and feeds when out and about was just too overwhelming.

Still, I didn’t want my babies to miss out on the fun and engaging benefits of making music. Having studied to be an early childhood teacher I was well aware that music really boosts children’s development. Not only is it an amazing tool for bonding with your little one but it also promotes brain development, language and literacy learning, social, emotional and motor skills.

After doing some research, I gathered a variety of ideas for music activities that were easy to do with my babies at home. Sometimes it would be just the three of us jamming together in our living room, and on other days we’d invite a few friends over to share the experience. There was always plenty of joy and I will never forget those special times.

You can find plenty of nursery rhymes to learn with your baby online. However, to maximize the benefits it is best if you sing the songs to your baby as well.

Research from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, found that infants are more engaged with songs sung by their mothers than recorded music. It is also valuable to include actions with the songs, and there are a few ways you can do this such as knee bounce rhymes like To Market To Market or Trot Trot to London, action songs like Row Row Row Your Boat or Sing-A-Song of Sixpence, or fingerplays like 5 Little Monkeys and I’m Bring Home a Baby Bumblebee.

Dance to music that you love

Here are some activity ideas you might like to try at home with your baby.

Homemade Musical Instruments Encouraging your baby to play instruments helps them to develop their fine motor skills and co-ordination, as well as building their self confidence. Creating rhythms and beats with drums, bells and maracas is the perfect way to introduce your baby to instruments.

You can make these from basic, everyday household items. The ageold pot turned upside down with a wooden spoon works wonders for banging along to some recorded music.

For makeshift maracas simply fill small containers (ie. baby food containers, plastic bottles, yogurt pots, baby bottles) with either sand, dried beans, rice, pebbles, pasta or popcorn (unpopped!). Use duct tape or glue to seal the containers and make sure that they are tightly shut! Play some funky music and shake along. If your baby is new to the concept, show them how to shake it. They will feel very proud once they’ve mastered the motion.

Sing and move to nursery rhymes While traditional nursery rhymes and songs may feel a bit old fashioned, they are highly educational and enhance children’s phonological awareness, which is important for learning to read.

Moving to music with your baby can soothe their nervous system, activate their brain, foster their sense of rhythm and increase your bond. Choose music that makes you happy, because if you are enjoying yourself then your baby will too.

If your baby isn’t standing or walking yet, hold them in a position that is comfortable for you both – through their legs facing out, flying on your arms, in a carrier, or on your hip. Just make sure you hold your infant tight and keep movements smooth and safe. If your baby is on their feet, hold their hands gently.

When you are dancing you might like to try freezing to the music briefly to give your baby a chance to process the movement and get ready for the next round. You could also include props like scarves and shakers for extra fun!

So whether you are stuck at home on a rainy day, or you just can’t face leaving the house, it’s easy to entertain, educate and bond with your baby through music.
