Welcome to our Toddlers & Childcare issue!
How exciting! It’s almost Hallowristmas! It is truly the most wonderful time of the year to begin sugar-fuelled family negotiations and panic planning for the upcoming social expectations. How wonderful to see capitalism steamroll through multiple events simultaneously as all the decorations are thrust to the shelves in September!
Don’t forget the upcoming work parties/school concerts/teachers’ gifts and that one friend who has a December birthday. The holidays are about being together, so I’ve told my family that instead of gifts this year, all I really want is COVID (again). A week of total isolation and bed rest is a gift money can’t buy!
In lieu of that there are lots of ways to survive the next few months. Make yourself a self-care advent calendar by writing 1-25 on the back of your paracetamol! Turn off your caller ID so no one answers your calls and you can’t RSVP to anything! Scream into a pillow until you lose your voice and imply it is a vow of silence!
A great way to cut down on expensive gifts is to pressure your kids to make things. It keeps them busy as they labour through the summer evenings, and loved ones have to pretend they love it or look like a Grinch! Head over to the Museum of Brisbane to inspire your children (they really need to determine their position on post-structuralism BEFORE they gift their intersectional nondenominational holiday card to the grandparents) or approach your kindy/ childcare with a few Pinterest/Etsy links for proposed end of year crafts, and don’t forget to include a market analysis and cost rationale!
Wishing you all the most delightful of days with minimal screaming and surprise cash in the pockets of your favourite summer shorts.
Yours in eternal Whamageddon,

SOS - SAVE OUR SANCTUARY
Deathrow Unchained Animal Rescue (DRU) is in imminent danger of closure - can you help?
The Burbank animal sanctuary is home to over 170 rescued animals who now live a peaceful life of love at the volunteer-run venue. The sanctuary is self-funded, with much of its income coming from sanctuary tours and animal interactions.
Unfortunately, Covid restrictions and lockdowns meant the sanctuary lost its major source of income, but care for the animals continued. The sanctuary’s landlord and suppliers have been wonderful, but as family businesses themselves, they can only carry the debt for so long. With the clock ticking, DRU is asking for help to clear its debts and continue to help the animals in its care.
There are many simple ways to help, from one-off donations, to booking a tour, to sponsoring raffle prizes for Oct 22-23 major fundraising event. To find out how you can help, head to deathrowunchained.org or scan the QR Code.

Museum of Brisbane
When it comes to finding experiences for your family that are both entertaining and educational you simply cannot go past a trip to your favourite museum.
From history to art (and everything in between) there is something to spark imagination and excitement in every young mind. But did you know that one of Queensland’s best teaching museum’s is right here on your doorstep?
Located in the iconic heritage listed City Hall, Museum of Brisbane (MoB) is fostering the next generation of curious and creative thinkers through highly immersive school group programs and experiences. From interactive learning opportunities where your child can get hands-on with real life museum objects to creative writing courses, find out how your school can help get their kids out of the classroom and into an exciting experience at Museum of Brisbane.
Making Place with Artful Writing:
SUITABLE FOR GRADES 3-12
A friendly and inclusive introduction to creative writing, Artful Writers is a workshop designed to build literacy skills for primary and secondary students. Students will take a stroll through our exhibitions and draw inspiration from the artwork on the walls to create unique and creative stories.
Flexible lesson plans structure the experience into a series of gallery response activities. Students engage closely with material culture, artworks and narratives, using this experience to generate imaginative ideas to apply in the creative writing workshop.
The learning activities are tailored to the education needs of primary or high school students.
Finding Your Motif with Sam Tupou:
SUITABLE FOR GRADES 4-8
Drawing inspiration from local artist Sam Tupou, and his work featured in the City in the Sun exhibition, participants in this Learn Experience are invited to design their own personal motif and create a tapa cloth style artwork.
In the workshop, young designers are nurtured through a creative intensive. They are presented with a range of stimulus drawn from the natural and built environment in Brisbane. In the process of producing an original artwork, students also learn about the use of grids, symmetry, repetition and restricted colour palettes in visual design.
Students learn about how traditional tapa cloth methods and products continue to be meaningfully incorporated into cultural practices across the Pacific Islands and among the diasporas. They learn how tapa cloth designs, techniques and symbolism continues to inspire contemporary artists.
The best part? Depending on availability you can even request the artist himself to help present the class!
Brisbane Now and Then:
SUITABLE FOR PREP – GRADE 6
Travel back to a time when horse-drawn trams traversed Brisbane streets and children splashed around in the Brisbane River in this engaging and collaborative excursion! They will discover the history and importance of the heritage-listed City Hall on a tour of the ‘People’s Place’, from its humble beginnings as a swampy waterhole, a stable for horses, to the ‘million-pound’ building that still stands today. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the significant people and events that have impacted the city of Brisbane. Then head back into the Museum’s Studio for a hands-on “object handling” experience where they will be able to get up close and personal with historical objects that track the passage of time.
Brisbane in a Suitcase:
SUITABLE FOR PREP – GRADE 6
Cannot make it to MoB? Let MoB come to you with a creative incursion! Investigate the history of Brisbane through a selection of objects delivered by our team of Museum Educators in your classroom. Step into the role of a Museum Curator with a magnifying glass in hand as you compare and investigate original objects and photographs from the past and present. Understand how toys, transport and technology have changed over time via hands-on learning.

Brisbane City Vibes with Sebastian Moody:
SUITABLE FOR GRADES 7-12
Ever wanted to try your hand at creating an advertising campaign?
In this MoB Learn Experience, middle and senior students are invited to design and share their own creative endorsement of Brisbane City. They will create either an artwork or a marketing product, drawing inspiration from local artist Sebastian Moody’s body of work.
Brisbane City Vibes with Sebastian Moody is a workshop that presents students with a feasible, creative industries scenario as a stimulus. Students are first invited to work individually, to engage their imagination and memories in a search for inspiration. Then working in groups, they are challenged to create, reflect on and share media artworks that respond to this brief. Finally, students analyse how their works convey meaning and impact audiences.
White Gloves Experience: Easton
Pearson Archive:
SUITABLE FOR GRADES 10-12
Have your students got a passion for fashion? MoB is home to the extraordinary Easton Pearson Archive, the largest textile collection from a single Australian fashion house held by a museum! This amazing experience offers an unique insight into the creative design process, sustainable ethos, fashion history and culture inherent in the work of Brisbane designers, Pamela Easton and Lydia Pearson. Students will receive specialist insight from our Museum Educators on a curated selection of Easton Pearson garments and inspiration pieces, as well as fabric samples, range plans and look books. You can even complement your experience with a creative making workshop focused on slow fashion and embellishment techniques.
