Mulberry House shortlisted for Diversity Award! The Mulberry House School was founded in 1989 with the main aim of developing a love of learning within each child. The recent 2017 ISI inspection highlighted the school’s commitment to both children’s academic achievements and their personal development by awarding them with ‘excellent’ across all areas. Daily activities across the school promote respect for all cultures, faiths and lifestyles, culminating in events such as Africa day, Indian cultural week and Manadrin Breakfast. The school promotes diversity and nurtures community understanding and acceptance of our differences. Dedicated to promoting pupil voice, the School was keen to support one of their pupil’s (Xavier Shoqat) campaign called ‘Be an ALLY.’ The ALLY programme aims for all London schools to promote diversity and as a result the school has recently won the Parliamentary School Council Awards. The school has been nominated from 22,000 people to become a finalist for this year’s National Diversity Awards.

Children on 10-week Term Time courses - weekly, small group music lessons on ukulele, violin, guitar and cello - are nominated by their Course Leader for a Music Medal, giving them something really worthwhile to work towards. Children as young as 4-5, enrolled onto a Minis Course, are also encouraged to complete their Minis Awards for which they receive a very special Minis certificate at the end of each term. Founder Amy Cunningham, an experienced violin and classroom music teacher, believes that children learn and develop skills a lot better when they receive a dynamic, highquality and fun music education. “Seeing children, develop their musicianship skills alongside life skills such as confidence, teamwork, listening and improving overall well-being is deeply humbling and makes all of our hard work at the Head Office worth it!” Find out about Courses and Discovery Days: 01212 969 204 www.thestringsclub.org/termtime familiesonline.co.uk

Local News Register for Wear A Hat Day 2018 and start planning your event! Wear A Hat Day is the UK’s premier brain tumour research fundraising event. It takes place on Thursday 29th March 2018. March is also UK Brain Tumour Awareness Month. Schools and families across the country get involved to help raise funds for research into brain tumours. Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. This is unacceptable! Brain Tumour Research is the only national charity in the UK that is purely dedicated to raising funds for continuous and sustainable scientific research into brain tumours. Taking part can be as simple as putting on a hat and donating on the day, but most families like to create entertaining fundraising events. Many schools, for example, have inventive hat competitions, parades and fashion shows. Register now on www.wearahatday.org and start planning your hat-tastic fundraising event. Your fundraising pack will be sent out in early 2018 and will include leaflets, posters, balloons, wristbands and badges to help promote your event!

Students are encouraged to have fun by taking part in Fiorentini’s Got Talent, joining the Anna Fiorentini Performance Troupe (which tours hospitals and various events), taking LAMDA exams and participating in the annual showcase. Mums Mean Business Sarita Kapur - Mini Chefs Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a mum of two (I have a 10 year old boy and an 8 year old girl). I have been self employed for 10 years, running Baby Massage and Yoga classes. Now that my children are getting older I have been able to explore my other passion which is cooking.

Tell us about your cookery club.

Mini Chefs is a kids cookery club for ages 2.5 years to 9 years old. The classes are run according to age (2.5 years - 4 years old, 5 years - 9 years old). Children learn about food in a fun, exciting and enjoyable way. We make tasty savoury healthy food as well as yummy puddings!

How did you get started?

My children were abit fussy with food but I found that when they helped me prepare their meals they were more keen to eat! Since childhood I’ve had a very keen interest in cooking. I used to love the Home Economics lesson at school! I want to give children the same joy of cooking as I did, so I set up Mini Chefs.

Website: www.minichefs.co.uk Telephone: 07946 507 119 Email: saritakapur14@gmail.com

What does the future hold for the business?

I currently run an after school cookery club at my children’s primary school. I’ve also been running a cookery club during the summer holidays. This has been a huge success! I will be running classes for 2.5 - 4 year olds and for 5 - 9 year olds in September in Muswell Hill and Southgate.

What is the best bit about what you do?

I really love the joy on a child’s face when they see the end result of what they have made! It’s even better when the parents and children come back to tell me how tasty the food was. You get a great feeling when you are doing something you love and when its being enjoyed and really appreciated.

Any bad bits?

Preparing for a cookery class takes alot of time and effort. The ingredients must be fresh, cleaned/washed and prepared with extra special care. For my classes, I also put together quizzes according to each age group. With 2 children finding time can be a bit of a challenge but I aways manage to do so and I ensure everything is well prepared.

How do you fit work around family life?

Running your own business with a family is hardwork. It takes motivation, dedication and commitment. I prepare ingredients on the day of the class to ensure freshness. The quizzes for the class I do while my kids are asleep. The best thing about it is that I can spend time with my children.

What advice would you give other mums looking open a new business?

Mums are super organised, can multi task and can juggle lots of balls at the same time. It’s because of these skills as a mum that we are able to run a business. I would say go for it but make sure it’s something you are truely passionate about.

Poem for Starting School

You’ve applied for the school, bought the uniform, and no doubt cried a few tears already. And now as September fast approaches, the countdown to waving goodbye at the school gates for the first time is getting closer and closer.

Dear Parent, I understand that you are scared to wave your child goodbye and leave him in a teacher’s hands – don’t worry if you cry! I’m used to weeping parents, it’s hard to leave I know. But it’s time to share him (just a bit) to help him learn and grow. Let me reassure you that I’ll give your child my best, I’ll wipe his tears, soothe his fears and change his dirty vest! If your darling child is full of cold I’ll blow their nose all day, just like you, I’ll care for them in a special way. I’ll treat him like I would my own I’ll catch him from a fall and if there is ANY problem I’ll be sure to tell you all. It’s true he’ll grow to love us, they’ll talk of school a lot, it doesn’t mean they hate you and that you should lose the plot! I’ll tell you a secret… That when your child is here, they talk to me as much of you of this please have no fear. You’ll always be their mother, whilst teachers come and go, to them you are their number one, this I truly know. Soon you’ll see some changes, in your little girl or boy, they’ll become more independent and to see this, it’s a joy! I’ll teach them all I have to give, to share, climb and to write, but to you they safely will return to tuck them in at night. With love from a teacher…” Dear Parent is from the poetry collection, “A Teacher’s Insight” by Leonie Roberts. Her latest book is “More Teacher Insights”. you can find her on Facebook page “A Teacher’s Insight”, Twitter @leonierobertsuk and www.leonieroberts.wordpress.com

Explore Makes Learning Fun! Hi, my name is Beth Stone. I have two children: Hannah, 9 & Sarah, 7 How long have you been going to Explore? 2 years Why did you decide to join Explore? I wanted my youngest daughter to have a good grounding in maths and English. Later, my oldest daughter said she wanted to go to Explore ‘to learn and have fun’. I went in for an initial meeting in Finchley with one of the managers, who offered me a flexible package. I pay monthly for twice weekly sessions. If we miss any sessions, we can do these in the school holidays. There are also Open Days, where the children can bring someone else, such as a parent, and show them what they have been learning. The workshops in the holidays are great fun! They have themed ones, for example on phonics, telling the time, punctuation, or for the older ones, angles, fractions and SATs and 11+ revision. How has Explore helped/ what impact has Explore had? The staff are all very friendly and helpful, and great at encouraging the children. They sometimes have to explain to me the terms for the phonics, maths and grammar they do nowadays! Sarah loved showing her Daddy how she did her sums on the ‘take your parent to Explore’ day, and feels very proud of herself for her achievements.

Beth, Hannah & Sarah

What advice would you give to other parents thinking about bringing their children to Explore? Go in for a free trial. You can have an interview with the manager who will explain how it works. Speak to other mums you know that use Explore Learning or other tutoring services and ask their children, too. If you introduce a friend, Explore Learning offer £5 off the fees every month. Can you tell me what you think makes Explore Learning a unique tutoring service? The learning is tailored and fun. The children only spend 15 minutes on any one subject so they don’t get bored. Plus, they work in a small group of up to six children to one tutor. How do Explore tutors support your children in their sessions? The work is a mixture of computer-based and pen and pencil. The tutors have their own group of children, question them, and give input when needed. What do your children enjoy about their sessions at Explore Learning? They want to learn. They have targets that stretch and challenge them. Explore have an excellent motivational reward system. The children’s efforts are celebrated with certificates when they have moved their names to the top of the board, which is really nice. They can earn up to 4 lizard cards per session! Lizard cards are given out for ACE (Asking for help, Concentration and Effort), meeting their goals and for getting above a certain score in maths and English. They also get cards if they walk or scoot to the centre, which is great for us as we live so close by. The children can trade in multiples of 25 lizard cards for a prize. 200 lizard cards can be swapped for a huge prize! How has Explore supported what your child is working on at school? All the learning is based on the National Curriculum. They are really enjoying the extra challenge. Both of my girls are proud of the progress they have made.

We’re giving them the confidence to tackle the new school year fearlessly!

Facing The 11+ Journey

It’s probably not news to you, but if your Year 5 child is likely to sit any entrance exams for selective state schools, it’s time to think seriously about 11+ preparations.

As a first step, have your child academically assessed at this point. This will allow you to find out if they are capable of succeeding amidst the fierce and constantly increasing competition for 11+ places, and indeed whether they are likely to cope in a highly academic selective senior school. To succeed, your child needs to be taught and practise both the 11+ curriculum and the exam techniques and strategies needed to optimise results. Standard primary school lessons will not provide adequate preparation. One-to-one tutoring, tutor groups and holiday workshops can all dramatically boost a child’s knowledge and their confidence to face the exams, but unless they would be suited to a highly academic school, it makes no sense to push them into one. Consider carefully whether the selective route is right for your child, then give them all the support they need. JK Educate are experts in preparing children for the 11+ exams for state selective and independent schools and offer academic assessments for all children, including suitability for the 11+. If you would like more information, contact JK Educate on 020 3488 0754 or via jkeducate.co.uk

From the classroom to the great outdoors… learning the Steiner way By Katharine Ward

Imagine a preschool where early reading, writing and number work are not on the curriculum, and instead children learn by doing, and flourish through fun activities such as imaginative play, songs and rhymes, and baking bread. In fact, imagine a kindergarten (a ‘children’s garden’) in which the activities include pressing apples and discovering the natural world. It sounds like an educational idyll but this engaging teaching style and ethos – where all aspects of a child’s physical, social, emotional and spiritual life are valued – is a reality at the North London Rudolf Steiner School. The school is a full member of the Steiner Waldorf Schools’ Fellowship (SWSF) and a recognised SWSF Early Years provider. The school is also registered with and inspected by the Department for Education as an independent school. The Steiner Waldorf approach is characterised by guiding and supporting children through the different stages of their growth with the aim of developing resourceful, self-confident and rounded citizens. The curriculum in the kindergarten takes into account all the Areas of Learning and Development recognised in the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and, in particular, is designed for children to develop self-confidence and a love of learning.

10 Families North London

The North London Rudolf Steiner School offers two mixed-age Kindergartens for children from three until rising seven, where mixing the ages creates a traditional large family atmosphere. There are also daily Parent and Child groups for children aged from 0 to three-and-a-half years. All groups are led by specially-trained Steiner teachers in a creative, safe and homely environment in which the children develop socially, emotionally and physically and achieve their potential. . The foundations for literacy and numeracy are developed through activities such as stories, rhymes and age-appropriate domestic work and craft projects. An emphasis on free play develops self-confidence and social skills for life. Children benefit from daily outdoor experiences. The school’s garden area has a purpose-built outdoor classroom for woodwork and an earth oven where children bake bread. The school even has a special Garden Curriculum incorporating outdoor activities such as pressing apples to make juice, making turnip lanterns and planting bulbs. The Parent and Child groups, which pregnant mums are welcome to attend, are designed to support parents and carers and introduce young children to the world of education through playing with simple toys and natural objects. Youngsters are encouraged to explore their independence and social skills. For more information, please go to: www.rudolfsteiner.london.sch.uk

Supplementary Education: What’s all the Fuss?

Saturday Schools and supplementary tuition is providing a bridge for many parents and pupils, to make possible their academic goals that are beyond existing mainstream provision. Parents are investing in supplementary education to • Plug learning gaps • Inequalities in standards of teaching and resources from one school to another. • Extra practise in specific ‘problem’ subject areas • Many parents don’t get a real choice about which school their child will be allocated a place • Preparation for entrance exams to selective schools • Schools that are high in the league tables are very sought after, so competition for places is fierce. Many parents’ experience this process as ‘a lottery’, depending on whether their address is in the ‘right’ catchment area for a leading state school. In response, supplementary tuition is now viewed by parents, as a solution and becoming significantly popular.

Why Choose Leaders are Readers Southgate • Leaders are Readers help develop positive study habits and attitude to learning • Our programmes (Reading, Mathematics and English (Language sense) and our methods provide pupils with opportunities to develop self-confidence and higher aspirations for themselves.

• We incorporate many teaching methods including technology, children are able to carry on learning between Saturday lessons through worksheets and online courses provided 24/7 free of charge. • Tutors who teach at our Saturday schools love teaching for a few reasons namely; it’s often calmer; much less formal with smaller class size. Therefore, teachers tend to be more relaxed themselves. Teaching in this context also lends itself to be more strategic and thorough. Children enjoy an experience more akin to private school. • Regular parent-tutor consultations establish great parentschool partnerships: keeping our parents informed and enabling them to play a very hands-on-role in their child’s education.

• Saturday school can empower gifted students to develop their skills and talents as they are given an outlet to learn topics more advanced than their school years.

• The culture of our schools offers a healthy learning environment which can be felt as a palpable and visible reality. Like-minded parents who share a commitment for their children to thrive generate a positive learning attitude in their children, which further strengthens our exemplary educational settings

• Those with learning difficulties are exposed to a new learning environment where research-based teaching strategies create additional opportunities for them to learn.

Call now to enrol your child into Saturday school and to book a trial class or lesson for our next Open Day. 01992 651 300, or email info@leadersarereaders.co.uk

• Pupils will be learning core content information that may be omitted at regular school due to a variety of constraints that teachers increasingly face.

You can secure your child’s place straight away by completing the enrolment form online. Visit www.leadersarereaders.co.uk or email lara@leadersarereaders.co.uk

Clubs, Classes & Activities

Special Feature

We aim to be as accurate as possible, but these listings are compiled several weeks beforehand and may be subject to change. Please check before setting out.

What are the benefits of after school clubs? Complete beginner through to budding-prodigy, there’s no doubting the pluses of after school clubs. While finances may not permit your little ones being involved in different activities every night of the week, there’s no doubt that a couple of well-chosen clubs can be great for giving your child an insight into areas that the school curriculum doesn’t cover.

So, why are clubs so important?

Organised sports and physical activities are not only brilliant for a healthy lifestyle but also helping them learn team work where they can begin to appreciate what’s good for the whole team, rather than just thinking of themselves. Competitive sports are also great for learning difficult life lessons like being a gracious winner - and loser. Meanwhile, learning a musical instrument is ideal for increasing your memory, perseverance, coordination and maths skills! The list is endless. There are clubs for almost anything you can imagine. The following 6 pages are packed with suggestions for some of the best local providers of skillbuilding fun for young and old alike!
