Buying your first home was an exciting, nerve racking experience and a leap of faith onto the property ladder.
Buying your next home, when your family is expanding, can be equally as exciting yet challenging at the same time. You may be embarking on the next chapter of your life when two become three, or maybe a further new arrival is on its way. Buying and selling a home together and becoming part of a “chain” of transactions can become frustrating and mysterious, with numerous buyers and sellers involved. A longer chain means more people involved and it may potentially take longer for everyone to be ready to exchange contracts and agree a completion date. If one party delays then the whole chain will be delayed, so be patient and make sure your agent can provide you with regular updates on the whole chain and not just your property. This is so that you can realistically manage your expectations as to when you will be moving. Moving in the early years of your children’s life will mean that you are able to make sure that your new home is within the catchment area of the perfect school for your children. When planning your move, it is important to factor in that it will take around 12-16 weeks from a sale being agreed to the actual move in date. Most schools have deadlines for enrolment and you will either need to have exchanged contracts or have completed to enrol your children for the start of the following term. It is crucial to make sure that your agent and solicitor are aware of any time critical dates so that the whole chain is made fully aware. Being clear with dates will help any last-minute issues with school placements. If you can only move during school holidays then make sure you tell your buyer and seller at the point of offer. Ensure that your budget has been properly considered. Moving home is expensive; you will have agent’s fees, solicitor’s fees, surveyors fee and most likely a higher amount of stamp duty than your first property. Your solicitor will be able to advise you on this. On the day of completion, be organised and prepared, as the time of completion can be affected by how many people there are in your chain. Your solicitor will be unable to complete the purchase of your new home until they have received the funds from the solicitor acting for your buyer, who in turn could be waiting for funds from their buyer. This sometimes means that completion doesn’t take place until early afternoon. Aim to have your removal company packed up and ready to leave around midday but be prepared that you may not be able to collect your keys to your new home immediately. Your removal company will have experience of sometimes having to wait to unload and they are there to assist you along the way. Have a ‘moving day box’ packed and in the car including a flask, snacks and something to entertain the children in case you do face delays in key collection. Buying and selling your home at the same time will only be as stressful and frustrating as you make it. If you are realistic with your timings for the move and make sure you communicate any critical dates or timeframes you have with your solicitor and agent then this will increase the likelihood of them being achieved. Be mindful that you may incur delays on the way that are not within your control as synchronising a chain of people with different needs and their own timeframes can sometimes be challenging.

Children’s Authors Top the Charts in Libraries The kids are taking over the libraries! Seven children’s authors— Julia Donaldson, Daisy Meadows, Roderick Hunt, Francesca Simon, Adam Blade, Jacqueline Wilson and Roald Dahl—are among the top 10 most borrowed authors in UK libraries, according to figures from annual data released by the British Library. David Walliams’ popularity continues to soar and he’s now the nineteenth most borrowed author, up from forty first place in 2014-15. Jeff Kinney does not make it into the top ten authors but his Diary of a Wimpy Kid series is clearly a big hit with kids with eight titles in the series featuring in the top 10 most borrowed children’s fiction titles. For parents looking for something for their ‘reluctant reader,’ this library data provides a helpful guide to what other children love. For more details, visit www.bl.uk/plr.
Technology Good for Kids Learning Recent research indicates that a staggering 96% of teachers believe technology has a positive impact on the way children participate and learn, whilst 56% believe pupils are more engaged, according to a survey conducted by Smoothwall, a web filtering provider for schools. An impressive 86% of teachers also say that technology has made them perform better and prepare more varied and exciting lessons. And parents are on board too. A survey conducted by The Knowledge Academy shows that 91% of parents believe technology makes it easier for them to be involved with their child’s education and 68% say technology has increased their ability to help children with school work. However, there are some concerns. At least a third of teachers are worried about using technology in class because they cannot control what each child is doing. Microsport Making Sport Fun January 2018 saw the introduction of Microsport to the Camden area. Local Barnet resident helps raises awareness for Look Good Feel Better charity campaign Lindi Urubusi recently ‘modelled’ for a national advertising campaign to raise awareness of the charity Look Good Feel Better. Lindi is 42 and lives in Barnet with her husband and three children. She is employed as a Supported Living Care Manager, working with people with learning disabilities & autism. After being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing treatment Lindi was one of the real-life models for the #Warpaint4Life advertising campaign, that has been displayed free of charge on large billboard sites, shopping centres and retails parks as well as magazines such as Vogue, You magazine and Cosmopolitan. Look Good Feel Better is the only charity that helps people manage the visible side effects of cancer treatment. Free workshops and masterclasses are held all over the UK and teach women vital skills such as how to manage changes to the skin and recreate missing eyebrows and eyelashes. Local News Duchess of Cambridge supports pilot project to improve mental resilience in 10-18 year olds The Duchess of Cambridge, who is a patron of the Anna Freud centre, was spotted at the Amnesty International office on the 11th of January. The Evidence Based Practice Unit at the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families and UCL is working with Big Lottery Fund and HeadStart partnership to collect, evaluate and share evidence about what does and doesn’t work locally to benefit young people now and in the future. One of the pilots is in Newham and a wide range of interventions are being trialled in schools and the community at each site. Headstart aims to promote awareness and provide advice to young people and their parents on dealing with stress and change. Anna Ware, an attendee from Mind, the mental health charity, found the day both rewarding and empowering, and said the duchess’s attendance and support of young people’s mental health brings awareness, breaks down stigma and was a real inspiration! The Mall Wood Green raises over £4,000 for Charity of the Year
The Mall Wood Green is delighted to announce it raised £4,016 for its Charity of the Year, MIND in Haringey, throughout 2017. The charity provides information, advice, and support to anyone in and around the borough who is affected by mental health problems. They work to prevent problems, promote wellbeing, and ensure those experiencing mental health are respected and included in the local community. The charity’s goal is to enable and support positive mental wellbeing to improve lives. MIND in Haringey became The Mall’s Charity of the Year in January 2017, which saw the North London shopping centre encourage shoppers to take part in a number of fundraising activities such as a jumble sale, a bake ‘n’ talk session for World Mental Health Day, and a Christmas Portrait Day. Education How Early Learning Can Predict a Child’s Success The study also concluded that “mathematical and reading ability at age 7 are substantially and positively correlated with financial success at age 42, independently of relevant confounding variables.” In other words, it was the actual reading and maths abilities at age 7 – not just the child’s socioeconomic status, the child’s IQ, or other factors – that had a lasting impact on the person’s life chances.
Understanding Words
Research consistently indicates that the earlier a child learns language skills, the better the long-term outcome. A well-known study in 19952 found that the number of words spoken to a child by age 3 was a better predictor of a child’s vocabulary at age 11 than the parents’ IQs, parents’ socioeconomic status, or which school the child attended. You may be surprised to learn that the long term effects of children learning language and maths skills at an early age is one of the greatest predictors of their financial success as adults. How can this be possible you may ask? With the many confounding variables such as a child’s IQ, formal education and socio-demographic background, it’s hard to believe that early reading or maths skills can be one of the most important factors associated with doing well as an adult. However, a 2013 study from the University of Edinburgh1 shows that early maths and reading abilities have major long-term benefits. Children who performed better in reading and maths tests at age 7 were shown to be more likely to earn higher wages later in life according to researchers. Children who had advanced by just one grade level in reading by age 7 earned an average of £5,000 per year more at age 42 than their classmates.
A more recent study on the topic found that babies who learned more words by 18 months of age had greater vocabularies at age 3. In addition, the researchers found that 18-month-old babies who knew more words had faster brain processing speed. The study also concluded that the “language gap” that exists by 18 months of age would be hard to overcome, meaning that babies who had been taught fewer words in the first 18 months of life could have later delays in learning language skills3.
Early Reading and Maths Skills
Reading problems at an early age are hard to counter-act later on in life. Very few children who cannot read at the appropriate level at the end of first grade ever catch up. There are also significant advantages in learning to read early. Studies back in the 1960s concluded that children who were taught to read at ages 3 or 4 read better than children of the same IQ who were taught at ages 5 or 6. Those with the same IQs who were taught at ages 7 or 8 were even farther behind. Six years later, the children who were taught to read earlier were still ahead of the same-IQ children who were taught later. In addition, the earlier the child was taught to read, the more likely the child enjoyed reading. Parental involvement in teaching children about reading and writing words is also related to the development of early literacy skills. In turn, early literacy skills directly predict word reading at the end of first grade (age 6-7 years) and indirectly predict reading in third grade (age 8-9 years). Word reading at the end of first grade predicts reading comprehension in third grade. Education Five Early Signs of Autism Early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder can mean parents don’t have to wait for their child to start school to implement intervention programs. Early autism intervention programmes can address the primary behavioural symptoms of autism in children from as young as 18 months of age and can have long term positive effects. Many children with autism appear to be developing typically until they start pre-school or kindergarten, when language and social delays stand out in contrast to the development of their peers. These five signs of autism can be observed in children as young as 12 to 24 months of age:
1. Your child does not look when you point at something.
A child with autism may not look when you point at an object across the room and may not follow your gaze when you look at something.
2. Your child does not point with one finger to request items or get help.
A child with autism may not use gestures like pointing with one finger to ask for things or to direct your attention.
3. Your child does not respond to his or her name.
Children with autism may not understand the response you expect when you say their name, or they may not be motivated to respond in the same way as a typically developing child.
3. Your child avoids looking you in the eye.
A child with autism may find eye contact challenging or painful and may avoid looking you in the eye when you are talking to, playing with, or dressing him or her.
4. Your child ignores you or does not seem to understand directions.
A child with autism may have trouble understanding spoken language. If you have concerns about your child, contact your GP or healthcare provider today. Get Crafty This Easter MARBLED EASTER BUNTING (AGE 2+)
This activity is a great intro to marbling, brilliant for learning about colour-mixing and for developing fine motor skills. Grab an apron, cover your work area, have a tray ready for your finished art and let your little ones get creative! What you’ll need:
Paper or card / Shaving foam / Poster paint (a few colours) / Tray or baking tin / Brush or clean stick What to do:
• Spray foam onto the tray and then add the paint. • Use a brush to make patterns in the foam before laying the paper carefully on top and pushing down gently. • Lift off the paper and use an old piece of card to scrape off the excess foam. • Leave to dry and then cut the paper into egg shapes. • Thread with string and you’ve got some beautiful Easter bunting.

COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO EASTER BREKKIE (AGE 4+)
Make these special eggcups to decorate your festive breakfast table. Requires some cooking, so get an adult to help. What you’ll need:
Empty eggbox / Scissors / Red & yellow card or felt / Glue / Googly eyes / Feathers / Eggs / Pan What to do:
• Carefully cut out a cup from an egg box keeping the central egg divider. • Using red card or felt cut out a mini cocks comb, and glue it onto the head. • Using a little scrap of red paper cut out a mini heart shape to form the wattle. • A mini folded over yellow triangle will make the beak. • If you have googly eyes to hand use these otherwise draw on your eyes. • Feathers added to the sides using tape give your cockerel the finishing touch. • Boil your egg for 3.5 mins-4 mins for soft boiled or between 7-10 for hard boiled • Pop the toast in and start your Easter weekend with your very own handmade eggcups.

Parenting Could Shared Parental Leave Work for You? By Mandy Garner Shared Parental Leave (SPL) allows parents to share time off work during the first year after their child is born, with dads and mums both taking some of the leave, whilst being paid at a statutory rate. When Craig Curran and Sarah Farquharson looked into sharing the time off after their baby was born, they couldn’t believe their luck. They both worked for Virgin Money which offered enhanced shared parental pay for parents on SPL – meaning they would receive a higher level of pay than the statutory rate. Sarah also earned more than Craig so it made better financial sense for Craig to share the leave with her. Even better, the couple were able to take a month of leave together – Sarah took the first five months of leave alone, the couple shared the sixth month and Craig took the last two months. The result for Craig and Sarah has been a closer family relationship and a greater sharing of parental responsibilities - with neither parent’s career suffering as a result. Sarah was promoted just after she found out she was pregnant whilst Craig returned from his leave to a promotion. “If anyone asks me about it, I say just do it. You never get that time again,” says Craig, “I would 100% do it again”. Both Craig and Sarah report that their managers and colleagues were very supportive of their leave plans. However, that is not always the case. In its annual survey Workingmums.co.uk found that only 37% of respondents said they would consider taking SPL. The majority would not. Some of the reasons given were the negative impact on household finances, fears that the dad’s career would suffer and a lack of knowledge about SPL. Some 43% of respondents said they wouldn’t take SPL because it would not make sense financially but the majority of these said that even enhanced SPL pay wouldn’t make a difference to their decision. Clearly, the suggestion is that other non-financial factors are at play, such as the desire many women have to spend as much time as possible with their baby. 17% of mums said they didn’t want to share their leave. What SPL does is give parents greater choice over how they manage the care of their new born child and it can be an important building block in facilitating change in discriminatory working environments. However, take up remains very low nationally, possibly because the legislation is complex and dry. HR managers are recommending that the language is simplified and that managers are given tools they need to implement SPL, as well as being able to give concrete case studies which show
the many different ways in which SPL can be taken: in one chunk or in separate blocks over a period of time; overlapping with the mother for all or part of the leave and so forth. Being able to read about other parents’ experiences brings the whole process to life. One of the benefits of SPL is that dads who have taken it feel much more confident about being in sole charge of their children. They also have a greater sense of empathy about what looking after a baby involves, and there can also be a positive impact on mental wellbeing. One dad who took SPL is John Birrell from the law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner. His wife went through a traumatic emergency C-section followed by hospitalisation for an infection. Having her husband to share the months after the birth meant she was not left on her own to recover from major surgery while doing the physically exhausting work of looking after a young child. “Mental health is too often ignored and post-natal depression must be one of the most common forms,” says John. One couple who took part are Eulalia Pereira and Martin Stopher from London. Eulalia said: “As a mother there is a sense you should be doing everything. I know (as a result of taking SPL) that Martin, on a day to day basis is there, that he is involved with the kids. For every £8 parents pay into their childcare account the government will add an extra £2.
