Jigsaw Performing Arts is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary and are delighted to announce the opening of Jigsaw Watford on Saturday mornings from the 26th September.

The Library at Willesden Green now open!

A beautiful new cultural centre has now opened its doors to the public. The building has a lot to offer the community: it contains a modern well stocked library over 3 floors, the Brent Museum containing historical exhibits that date all the way back to the prehistoric era, 2 galleries for art and photography exhibitions, and a performance space where they will be showing films and putting on shows. Across the 3 floors there are also 66 public computers and 120 study spaces.

There will be an official launch event on 12 September but don’t wait until then to come and visit! Open 7 days a week.

NEWS Volunteer with Home-Start to make a huge difference to local families Are you a parent or grandparent with 3-4 hours a week to spare? As a parent, you’ll know just how difficult raising small children can be. So why not use your experience and skills to help local families?

Home-Start Hillingdon trains volunteers to support families under stress with at least one child under 5. They visit the family in their own home to give support, friendship and practical help.

Full training, support and out of pocket expenses are provided.

The next Volunteer Preparation course starts on the 8th October and will run for 10 weeks on a Thursday during term time. Or, if home visiting isn’t for you, why not consider becoming a trustee to help us run the charity.

Balance/ Auditory/Vision eXercises (Bal-A-Vis-X for short) are all rhythmic exercises that use: balance boards, bouncy balls and sand filled bags. New Tax-Free Childcare scheme delayed to early 2017 Following a Supreme Court judgment, self-employed parents and those with more than one child who have been eagerly anticipating the launch of the Government’s new Tax-Free Childcare scheme this autumn, will now have to wait until 2017.

Ten mistakes that parents may make when they’re new to school life

Mums and dads of older children share their top tips on what they would have told themselves to avoid problems when they were new to the school run.

Complaining to the teacher - based on what your child told you happened…only it didn’t…

You take what your child has said as gospel, march into see the teacher, only to fall flat on your (red with embarrassment) face when you discover your little one has got completely the wrong end of the stick.

Even the most switched on, truthful child can mishear or misunderstand sometimes.

Stay open-minded and communicate to the teacher that you appreciate what you’ve been told might not be what actually occurred, but still needs addressing to reconcile the situation for all involved!

Sweating the small stuff An interest in how your child is doing is healthy and important but getting overly-wrapped up with the minutiae of reading levels and maths groups is less so. Who could tackle the hardest spellings at the age of five will not go on their CV, after all.

As Emma, mum to Jamie, 12, and Lucy, 9, puts it “I realise now that who was sitting on which table or reading which books wasn’t anywhere near as important as I thought it was then. If your child is progressing and enjoying school, try not to worry.”

Getting embroiled in school gate competitiveness Engaging with ‘Competitive Mum’ (there’s one in every class…) is a lose-lose situation. If your child is ahead of hers, she’ll hate you for it. If hers has one up on yours, you’ll end up inwardly fuming at her smugness. Do not participate in her FBI-style interrogations about whether your child has done grade 42 piano or is taking their platinum swimming badge yet.

If all else fails, adopt a vacant look and mutter “the reading scheme – don’t understand it”, or change the subject quickly – the weather, last night’s Eastenders, anything but school.

Not helping at school…or doing so for the wrong reasons Volunteering for the Parent Teacher Association is an ideal way to make friends and feel that you’re a part of the school community.

You might also be able to assist in class as a volunteer - just don’t do it to snoop on who gets up to what in there, and avoid ‘telling tales out of school’ – you won’t find yourself asked back very quickly!

Freaking out about friendship fall-outs Reception children switch friends quicker than you can ask ‘who’s your best buddy?’ It’s completely normal and bust-ups are quickly forgotten.

Provide a shoulder to cry on and offer reassuring advice. You could also arrange playdates with other classmates to build bonds.

Cath, recalls how daughter Ava, 7, fell out with her best friend: ‘I was ready to storm around to her house. Then I realised they change best friends every day. It wasn’t a big deal for her. “

chat with staff you might have been used to at nursery or with a childminder. There could be 30 children in the class - if every parent asked for that ‘quick five minute catch up’ on a daily basis, ‘Miss’ would be there for 2.5 hours.

Sangeeta, mum to Maya, 6, says: “there’s an element of ‘no news is good news’. If they’re struggling or misbehaving, the teacher will tell you. You get used to not knowing so much about what they do.”

Try asking your child some targeted questions on the walk/ride home to help build a picture of their day – a great chance to develop speaking and listening skills.

Expecting your child to be chatty and delighted to see you at 3pm Even little ones who were fine with full-time nursery can have the stuffing knocked out of them by starting school. With so much to learn, by home time many reception kids (and teachers!) are exhausted.

Alison, mum of Jack, 7, advises: “I wanted to catch up with him but he used to be so grouchy. Don’t sign up for any after-school activities initially. Lots of early nights helped, too. Oh, and always have a healthy snack waiting for them – he still comes out starving every day”.

Focusing on whether they know their letters before they start but not worrying about getting their coat or shoes on Ask a reception teacher what they would like their new charges to be able to do and it probably won’t be about letters or counting.

What they would like is for your child to be able to dress and undress for PE, use the loo independently and maybe recognise their name on their coat peg/ belongings. These life skills are much harder to teach to a ‘group’ and require patience and practice to build up their independence.

Not naming absolutely anything of use or importance!

There’s a black hole in every primary school into which children’s belongings fall, never to be seen again. If you want to maximise chances of getting lost items back, add their name to everything.

And be very wary when your child asks if they can take their favourite teddy/ toy into show the other children, as there’s a chance it will never be seen again.

Tackling other parents about problems between the children Some little horror has been merciless to your child and your protective instincts are kicking in. But do not head over to give the other mum what for. She could have a different version of events and you’re unlikely to change her mind about who said or did what to whom. There’s also scope for a parental fall-out that will endure long after the kids make up. Cue an awkward few years at the school gate…

If the situation’s serious, raise it with the teacher and let them sort things out, and if you are approached by another parent, make the same suggestion – problems caused at school, should be solved at school.

How difficult is 11+ maths?

From the maths perspective, what are selective schools looking for?

U

nquestionably, a natural aptitude, borne out by their attempts to make exams ‘tutor-proof’ by using problembased questions. Many schools create papers using the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) based at Durham University.

Learning 11+ maths requires specialist tuition - a tutor with an in-depth understanding of the subject and the methods required to teach GCSE-level topics to 10-year-olds.

Additionally, the problem-solving aspect of more difficult 11+ questions involves thought processes that require very specialist teaching. Furthermore, exam technique and strategy have to be taught, something that would never be covered in primary school.

As many 11+ exams are sat in the autumn term of year 6, a number of topics will not have been taught to the required level yet,

the requirements of the national curriculum are far below what is necessary for 11+ exams. including algebra, ratios, geometry and statistics. If they have been covered, the requirements of the national curriculum are far below what is necessary for 11+ exams.

Algebra is not covered at all until year 6 and even then it is at a most basic standard.

Algebra-based questions in some 11+ exams include the informal usage of up to three-

step equations along with simultaneous equations. Similarly, ratios appear on the syllabus for year 6, but difficult questions requiring inverse ratios are way beyond the national curriculum.

Additional maths tuition is essential for students taking the 11+ exams.

It is imperative to have your child assessed to identify their potential. If this does not meet the required level, a more sensible option will need to be considered.

Education Mastery of skills in ‘Physical development’ has a positive impact on many aspects of children’s learning

Why?

• Ready access to electronic devices and screen based entertainment?

• Decrease in traditional play activities?

• Labour saving devices in the home?

• Less time spent in company of family?

• Convenience of family transport?

• Pressure of time? Convenience products?

“There are a huge amount of activities that you can do at home that will help develop your child’s fine motor skills.”

Here are some practical ideas for you to try at home.

• Tearing, scrunching and sticking paper • Threading ; beads on spaghetti or a pipe cleaner, pasta tubes on string to make jewellery, pipe cleaners in an upturned colander • Dough; squishing, stretching, making.

Use playdough, or an edible bread dough.

• Slotting/Posting; buttons in jars, shapes in slots cut in a cardboard box or slit a tennis ball so it has to be squeezed before you can put in the shape.

• Sorting; buttons, bead, shapes, shells

The British Heart Foundation recommends that pre-school children should be physically active daily for at least 180 minutes every day in light, moderate and energetic physical activities; because ‘during the period from birth to five, physical activity is critical to optimal growth and development.

The early years are an important time in the establishment of physically active or sedentary behaviours.’

Simple small manipulative games will help develop the muscles in their hands and fingers so they will have the strength to hold a pencil correctly when the time comes for learning to write”

• Weaving with ribbons • Fill a tray with flour, tea leaves or cornflour mixed with water to make ‘gloop’. Then encourage your child to make shapes, pictures with their fingers.

• Move small objects from ones pot to another using large tweezers.

So how do you choose?

ack-to-school stretches most budgets – uniforms, labels, school fees, and those must-have accessories, all of which might make you think twice about signing up for something more at this time of year, but there’s no doubt a couple of well-chosen out-of-school activities can be great for areas that the school can’t cover.

What do clubs and classes offer your child?

Mixing with children from other areas will widen their social circle • A chance to take part in activities not offered at school • A potential career • Teamwork skills • Increases confidence • Persistence and patience.

But don’t’ forget – play is important too.

Don’t fill up every after school with regular commitments if you can help it.

Educational Psychologist Peter Gray wrote that we should allow children more time playing and that more time in the classroom can be detrimental, because kids “Judgement, wisdom and creative ability … come from life experiences,” he says. “For children, those experiences are embedded in play.”

What age is best to start classes?

Early years: They get very tired so keep outside activities to a minimum. A good run in the park lets off steam. An art, singing or baby ballet-type class with the emphasis on play is great.

Infant school: Add a low-key activity; singing, music, dancing, sports and swimming are great.

Junior school: As tests loom, add an educational class if your child is struggling with one subject.

Mummy on the Edge Angelina and Midi-Me get in a huge fight.

I

kea has served us well. When I was overdue mummy-on-the-edge-to-be I would visit for mid-winter waddles, wending my way through the room sets and ending up in the marketplace, hoping the pretty colours of the plastic fantastic would motivate Mini-Me to finally peek out from under my bulging poloneck.

After she did, I binged on star lamps, toy hammocks and fairy bed nets – the poorly-put-together result of poring over storage porn in the freshly printed catalogue. This in itself was a treat to be stretched out over at least 3 tea-time sittings whilst Mini-Me was absorbed in the Sing and Sign video or Dora the Explorer. Oh, I pined to no-one in particular, when will my house look like a cool, happy Swedish hideaway, full of tea-hued children and finger paintings strung on the kitchen walls and potted rubber trees and recycling neatly stacked in plastic, lidded containers and rugs the colour of nature?

Reader, it never happened.

There was one milky-tea-hued child and increasing amounts of stuff. Everywhere. Much of it the colour of dirt.

There are arms swiping and flailing around us. We are actually and literally IN the middle of a huge fight and it’s not between the two of us!

Over a decade later and we find ourselves back in that hallowed blue hangar. I am on a mission to find white pillar candles to plonk inside these pretty lanterns we have hired for our wedding. After research on the interweb, I have ascertained that the ones in Ikea are cheaper even than Tesco! Mr Angelina has trusted much of the wedding planning to me and I know he is secretly worried I will source most of what’s needed from Lidl and Poundland. He’s more the Selfridges type. The yang to my yin, if you will.

In this blue paradise. Midi-Me likes looking at the roomsets and I am reminiscing about how I would bring her here when she was Mini and let her explore all the cupboards and corners and then let her watch in horror as I became increasingly trapped like a fly in a spiders web in the Marketplace, weighing up the pros and cons of unnecessary household paraphernalia and finally paralysed by indecision over whether to fill my yellow bag with klipthorps or udenblabs.

What? On a Wednesday, the queues are this long? Yeah, they are. I begin to wish I had ordered from Tesco. I send Midi-Me to another line in case it goes faster. It doesn’t. We each inch slowly forward. I make my best humble smiley face and ask the people in front if they mind if I go ahead of them, being that I’ve just got a few packets of candles, and a set of bamboo chopping boards (and something else that I can’t remember which is probably currently languishing in the kitchen SMÄCKER by now) and I’m late to meet my soon-to-be-mother-in-law for the first time. Kindly they accede. I shout Midi-Me’s name 3 times increasingly loudly in the vague direction of where she’s standing because she’s not answering her phone (why would she?) I don’t care that it’s embarrassing. I have become my parents.

We wait a further ten minutes and then joy, it is our turn!

But no. The guy at the till tells us to wait because in front of us have appeared returning customers who left a whole trolley-full of things behind because the guy forgot to zap them through the till. It’s hot. It’s tense. The stink of impending conflict pervades the air. The people behind us (formerly in front) are getting cross with the people in front of us (formerly not there).

The people in front of us get angry with the people behind us.

The people behind us get even crosser and louder and swearier with the people in front of us. The people in front get yet louder and crosser and swearier. There are arms swiping and flailing around us. We are actually and literally IN the middle of a huge fight and it’s not between the two of us! We are the sweet incongruous filling in a sweary, shouty angry sandwich. Like Nutella on a jalapeno nacho, we couldn’t be more out of place.

Midi-Me and I stand there cowering uncomfortably until it is over, when we pay for our bits and run, run, run to the car, safely unsmäcked and drive the heck away from Neasden.

Suddenly, “Ow!” she shoots accusingly (serious exaggeration, it was barely a tap…)

“Why did you do that?” I pointed to the name of the weapon, a 50p cutlery tray: SMÄCKER. I was just following instructions.

So I get the candles and we make our way to the tills.
