NEWS Educationalist Selva Pankaj

Asian Achiever Awards’ Entrepreneur of the Year Selva Pankaj, CEO of northwest London based education specialists, Regent Group, was delighted and honoured to be chosen as the winner of the prestigious Asian Achiever Awards Entrepreneur of the Year Award on 16th September 2016. Selva was thrilled to be chosen as the 2016 Entrepreneur of the Year in recognition of the astonishing development of an entity which once consisted of tuition at the kitchen table, into an organisation that has cared for and educated thousands of students over the years as well as providing much employment within the local community. Regent Group (www.regentgroup.org.uk) was formed at the turn of the millennium when Selva, and his wife and business partner Tharshiny, decided to launch an independent school and sixth form on the basis of the success of their tuition services. The school is now operating from a larger site in Harrow, with its tuition services located in a brand new state of the art facility, Regent Learning Centre. The Group now includes a number of other interests including Regent Leadership Academy, which offers executive training and most recently, Harmony House, a community project that has attracted support from government ministers and whose goal is the identification and resolution of problems within the community that could otherwise lead to extremism.

Education

But I don’t WANT to go to SCHOOL! How to cope with school refuseniks Not all children skip happily through the school gates each day. If yours isn’t keen on heading into the classroom, here’s some ideas of what you can do… instincts and chats with your child indicate the situation isn’t serious, try to ride things out without too much fuss. By not making this into a big issue, it might resolve itself. Meanwhile if you’re sure they’re just ‘trying it on’ - perhaps they fancy a day watching films on the sofa (don’t we all sometimes…) - stand firm and make it clear that attending school is non-negotiable.

Fake illnesses can be a headache… Mysterious maladies are a common manifestation of not wanting to go to school; although it can be annoyingly difficult to decipher whether kids are crying wolf or actually ill. If it could be the former, threatening a trip to the doctors/ call to NHS Direct will usually either get illness fibbers to confess, or provide a miracle cure.

Try to keep everyone calm Mornings can be fraught if your child has developed a school aversion but it’s important to at least try and all remain calm (easier said than done we know, especially if you’re under pressure from teachers to be punctual) or it could add to their anxieties.

It might just be a phase (here’s hoping…) Many children have a few days now and then when they’re not keen on going to school, sometimes for no obvious reason. If your

6

For more persistent and serious school aversions, consider the potential causes If there’s still no improvement and/or your child has a sudden but severe issue with school, it’s time to find out the triggers in order to help them. This can be challenging if they don’t even understand their fear, don’t want to tell you (or grandad or aunty) about it or struggle to articulate it at all. Common reasons for school aversion include bullying/ friendship problems, boredom,

North West London NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

learning difficulties, a tricky relationship with a teacher or a major family event such as a divorce or bereavement. You could mention similar situations you experienced in your school days to encourage discussion – modelling how to share their feelings can be a great catalyst.

Meet with their teacher Have a chat with their teacher to identify and work on any underlying issues going on in the classroom, playground or at home. They’ll probably have prior experience of all this, can provide extra reassurance or support for your child and you can carve out an action plan together.

Still struggling? Further support for severe cases of school refusal could be available via your GP who might make a referral to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) or a private psychologist.

When friends fall out: how to help your child cope with playground arguments Relax (a bit): it’s normal Ask primary school teachers and they’ll doubtless tell you that kids fall out (and in again) as quickly as a round of Hokey Cokey. It’s normal and most squabbles are soon forgotten: kids don’t bear grudges the way grown-ups tend to. Unfortunately this knowledge won’t console your heartbroken child much, so…

Reassure, hug and listen Even if it’ll probably blow over, your child might well feel like their world is collapsing. Give hugs, provide shoulders to cry on and tissues.

Help them to help themselves Once they’re calmer, instead of providing straight solutions, encourage your child to think through what they could do to resolve this, with guidance from you behind the scenes. If there’s been a misunderstanding, how could they instigate chat to explain? If the other child is consistently mean to them, who else could they play with instead?

Resist the temptation to wade in! Your parental instincts might urge you to tackle the little blighter concerned, or their parents, but hold back. Wait and see if everything settles by itself. Confronting the other child isn’t fair or appropriate. Plus your son or

daughter might find it embarrassing if mum or dad piles in to sort their playground problems out.

Proceed with caution with the other parents This is a minefield; many parents will never accept their offspring has done anything wrong. The children will probably make up before the week’s out, potentially leaving an awkward feud between the parents (who you’ll have to see at the school gates for the next however many years!). If they confront you, and the kids’ argument was relatively minor, it’s sensible to suggest ‘let’s leave the children to sort it out’, or similar. If goings-on were serious, perhaps say that you would rather the school dealt with it.

When to speak to the teacher… If the dispute involved physical violence, becomes persistent, and/ or your child starts not wanting to go to school or is having trouble sleeping, then do raise it with their teacher. They can then keep a closer eye on the children, intervening if necessary. In a busy class of 30, it’s understandable that they might not be aware of every falling out.

See this as a learning experience There might have been tears but chances are your child will have learnt more about relationships and friendships along the way.

Quick Tips for Beating the Festive Funk

A

s the kids come bounding in from their last day of term and dump their bags by the door to the sound of your exasperated sighs, it can be tempting to let them put on Frozen for the thousandth time while you get on with your gift wrapping. Then, once January arrives, the decorations are put away and the uniforms come back out, a feeling of dread envelopes you as you worry they’ve spent the break forgetting everything they’ve learned and losing their entire get-up-and-go attitude. So how can you keep your little ones switched on throughout the festive season, ready to learn again when the New Year rolls around?

 Get them moving An active body is vital for an active brain, and when better to take a crisp winter walk or cycle ride than the Christmas holiday? Getting out for some fresh air will do any child (or adult!) the world of good and it’s a great way to spend time as a family. The traditional Christmas afternoon stroll is a classic, but outdo yourselves this year by

8

making it a daily activity. Another great way to include sport in your holiday in a fun and educational way is a family football match on Christmas Day – teach them about the Christmas Truce in the First World War while also starting your own healthy family tradition.

 Pump them up for the new year Take a look at the national curriculum. Is your child due to study a Shakespeare play next term? Head to Shakespeare’s Globe in London, or Stratford-Upon-Avon if you fancy going further afield. Will they be learning about the environment? Squeeze a visit to the Eden Project into your Christmas break visiting relatives in Cornwall. Your child will get back to school in January bursting with knowledge and will love to share what they’ve discovered.

 Set challenges – and all take part Whether it be an academic challenge (‘reading bingo’ is always a popular one) or a totally random one (‘how many mince pies can we spot over the holiday?’), a family challenge is an enjoyable way to add

North West London NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

some structure to the holiday – and create some healthy competition! If your child’s school has set holiday homework, such as a reading challenge or maths puzzle, why not dust off your bookshelf or protractor and get involved? You might just rediscover a talent or passion you’d left behind in your own school days.

 Let them chill Let’s face it, the first term of the school year is a long road and everyone’s exhausted by the end of it. While you’ll no doubt be inundated with parties, playdates and Boxing Day sales, remember that recharging is a necessary part of any school holiday. If this means giving your child a ‘lazy’ day or two, so be it – it doesn’t mean they will descend into couch potatoes and it will give them the chance to take on the New Year properly revived and ready to learn. Tutoring:

What you need to know

We’ve put together some pointers on how to find a great educational support experience for your child…

Plan ahead where possible Some of the best tutors may well have waiting lists, so if you know your child will need support for exams or perhaps before moving to secondary school, begin your search well in advance.

Consider agencies Reputable agencies will vet tutors’ credentials and should match you and your child to someone with a similar style.

Group tutoring reduces costs but possibly won’t be as tailored These can work out cheaper per hour but your child won’t get the same one-on-one attention, and it’s vital to check that those in the group need to work on the same things at roughly the same level.

Anyone can become a tutor so do your homework One-on-one tutors should be Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checked (formerly known as CRB checking) – if they aren’t, then be wary.

Don’t be shy about checking how they work Ask questions even if you’ve had a recommendation from other parents - what suits their child may not suit yours.

Find out the local going rate Expect to pay anything between £20 and £65 an hour, depending on where you live and how in demand a particular tutor is.

Arrange a trial lesson Many tutors will offer your child a trial lesson - this lets you get a feel for whether the tutor and your child gel and whether their teaching style is going to work for you both.

Good luck! Get more information about tutoring from Families Online: www.familiesonline.co.uk/tutoring

Dad’s in charge New rules have completely changed the way parents can take time off after having a baby

J

ust a few years ago, dads could only take a fortnight off to spend with their newborn. While 2011 saw the introduction of increased paternity leave, it was only available when mums went back to work. But new Shared Parental Leave regulations give eligible parents across the UK flexibility to juggle childcare between them. After a compulsory two weeks off for the mother, parents can share up to 50 weeks of leave in the baby’s first year (or the first year of adoption). The law applies to same sex couples and those bringing up a child together, even if it’s from a previous relationship.

Taking it in turns How you split the leave is up to you. It will depend on who earns more, who feels their career will be least affected by taking time off, and who wants to be at home. Significantly, for the first time, dads can take the year off while mums return to work. The leave can be taken in blocks (up to three each) so you can alternate time off if one of you has a particularly busy time at work before resuming parental leave. It’s a

12

“Having time off together can benefit families with older children while everyone is getting used to a new member of the family.” big advantage if you don’t want to be away from work for too long. Some dads might want to return to work in the early months when mums are breastfeeding. Once babies start on solids, it can be easier for dads to be fully handson so they might want to take time off then, either in one go or in several blocks.

Sharing the load One big advantage is that parents can be off at the same time. Many mums need their partner’s support in those first

North West London NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

magical, exhausting, bewildering weeks and can dread their partner going back to work after a fortnight. In these cases, a few more weeks with both of you at home could help enormously. Having time off together can benefit families with older children while everyone is getting used to a new member of the family. It means one parent can focus on them and make sure they don’t feel left out. This can also be important in the school holidays when day trips with a newborn are tricky.

Can you afford it? Finances will play an important part in the decision. While you can share up to 50 weeks, only 37 are paid. You will receive £139.58 per week or 90% of your average weekly earnings, whichever is lower. See more on www.gov.uk/government/ topical-events/shared-parental-leave

Creating Confident children

C

onfidence is just as important in life – if not more so - than that brace of A grades. It’s vital to emotional wellbeing and something most of us hope our kids will develop. But how can we instil this feeling, particularly if it doesn’t come naturally to them?

Accept your child’s starting point Not all of us are confident by nature (life would be boring that way…) and whilst we can encourage self-belief, transforming a shy child into the ‘life and soul of the party’, is rarely realistic. Accept your child’s personality and ‘starting point’; it might be different to yours, or others’, and that’s absolutely fine.

Don’t force things Your child needs to trust you when taking on new experiences and forcing them into something they’re very uncomfortable with damages that trust. Instead, take small steps to encourage confidence Find opportunities to stretch just a bit beyond what your son or daughter is happy doing at any one time.

Work out what their fear is Pin down their concerns – perhaps it’s that they’ll make a fool of themselves, won’t be able to find you at the end of the party, won’t be understood.

Address their concern and provide reassurance that they will be okay, that what others think doesn’t really matter and that you’re there for them.

Keep praise special Keep praise for when it’s truly warranted and focus on effort rather than just results. This way, when they do achieve something amazing, your comments will have more impact.

Find their forte If your child doesn’t do so well at school, this can erode their self-esteem. Seek opportunities for them to try activities out

“Address their concern and provide reassurance that they will be okay, that what others think doesn’t really matter”

of school and highlight positive personality traits, such as being especially kind or a good organiser.

Step back sometimes and let them ‘have a go’ Children benefit from finding their own solutions, doing things their way sometimes and taking sensible risks. Guide and advise but try not to jump in and take over too quickly.

Mummy on the Edge In which Angelina deems Midi-Me and her cohorts responsible for solving the energy crisis, fixing inequality and averting world war (while she does yoga and gets a facial.)

Y

ou might wake every morning, pick up your phone, as I do, and start reading news headlines, realising in horror that we are within inches of handing the White House keys to a malevolent misogynist. You might, as I do, slide your feet into your knackered hotel slippers, pad into the kitchen and and do a double take out the window into the garden – no, it wasn’t a red nose, just a red rose swaying in the wind. You might, as I do, type “GBP to Euro” into the google daily and watch in wonderment as the pound floats down, down, like a single long-dead leaf blown off a brittle winter branch by a freezing breeze. You might, as I do, watch footage of Syrian children in Aleppo and Calais and feel heartbroken and not know how to help. You might, after all that, wonder if the world is going to hell in a handbag. Well I’m here to tell you it is not. Even though it may feel like it is (sometimes). So before you go back to bed and pull the covers over your head and wonder why you ever decided to procreate and contribute to the overpopulation of the world, remember this: Amongst the generations of mini and midi-mes that we and our families and friends and neighbours have produced are inventors, scientists, writers, artists, farmers, botanists, food technologists, researchers, medics, leaders of the future. They are going to sort all these messes out... hopefully… aided by Moore’s Law. Okay, I will try to explain (with the help of Wikipedia): Moore’s Law is something to do with the exponential development of technology by way of the doubling of transistors in a dense integrated circuit every two years or so. Don’t worry, I barely know what I’m talking about either. But think of it as the reason that your current smartphone is millions of times more powerful than all of NASA’s computing power in 1969 (source: zmescience.com). I watched this 20-minute TED talk from 2012 called “Abundance is our future” by Peter Diamandis and he made it sound like it’s all going to be alright because innovations will make it so. And, into this innovatory, technological mix I add… our progeny. The Smallpeice Trust is a Charity which provides residential courses in science, technology and engineering to boys and girls

from the age of 12 right up to 18 with the help of sponsors and universities. There is a shortage of girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) fields which organisations like The Smallpeice Trust are helping to redress. Midi-Me and her best friend were duly (and dually) shipped off to Warwick University at the end of the summer term, where they attended a 4 day “Girls into Engineering” course. By happy coincidence, the dates corresponded with a fantastic deal on a Champneys spa break which I found on Secret Escapes. But I digress… The girls lived in halls at the university, attended workshops and lectures and worked on projects set by project partners like Transport for London, a nuclear engineering organisation and other companies. There were female guest speakers providing insight and inspiration about careers in engineering and a big formal dinner at the end. I know all this because when I picked them up at the end they were bouncing up and down and uncharacteristically ready to impart information. I’m really hoping that this whetted their appetite for actual proper University, being that they’ve got to learn stuff in order to be able to save the world and all that. Many universities and colleges run events and holiday courses for school age children and we attended an open day at Imperial College a couple of years ago which, thinking about it now, may have been the engineering seed I planted in her head (mwah ha ha). I will be looking for more spa breaks courses for her. If you also want to manipulate your children into your chosen career path, follow me and I’ll share my findings with you.

How to create

a festive Family party to remember The thought of planning a festive party for family and friends can send us into a spin – especially if you’re fitting it in around your busy work and family life. But there’s no need to get hot under the collar if you follow our tips and advice for the best party ever! 1. Start early It’s never too early to start planning. Keep lists of ideas, inspirations and recipes in a note book. As the date gets nearer, hone the list down so that you know exactly what you want and need. Practice cooking any new dishes and order any hard to get items well in advance. Don’t forget to book your grocery delivery too!

2. Set the date – and tell people It pays to set the date early and let others know, so send ‘save the date’ notices on Facebook and follow up with a more formal invitation – make sure you include the start and end times and details the guests need to know such as “it’s fancy dress”. Find out if there are dates your party might clash with - such as a work party, or even a birthday. You could even consider that quieter period between Christmas and New Year!

3. Set a budget Costs can get out of hand, so think about ways you can cut back. Doing a shop at a budget supermarket, making food and freezing it is much more cost-effective than leaving it to the last minute and grabbing whatever you can from the ready-made aisles. Make a few simple dishes ahead and get decorations and napkins from a 99p store. If you like fresh flowers, avoid red - the cost of red flowers soars at this time of year! Choose another colour or gather evergreens from the garden. Drinks can also be very expensive, so ask everyone to bring a bottle while you provide a welcome cocktail or glass of fizz – plus soft drinks for the kids of course.

4. Think about who to invite Write down the names of people you’d like to invite as you think of them – you can always narrow it down later if you have too

20

many. And think about who gets on with whom – you may decide that two parties are necessary if you have factions of your family or friends who don’t get on with each other!

5. Creating the mood Think about how your home will appear to guests. Make it smell nice with flowers, coffee and scented candles (out of the reach of kids of course). Don’t forget the bathrooms – there should be toilet paper, a bin, hand soap and clean towels. Make it warm enough for comfort (but not stifling) and have a play list on your MP3 player. Just remember that everyone may be sick of Slade’s Merry Christmas Everyone by now, so perhaps go for something a little different. Frank Sinatra anyone?

“Practice cooking any new dishes and order any hard to get items well in advance.”

6. Making guests feel welcome As your guests arrive, make them feel welcome. Designate one of the kids to take coats to a bedroom, have some welcoming drinks on a tray ready to be handed out as people arrive and make sure there are enough seats. Have some canapés prepared and some simple snacks for the children too, so that you don’t have to be in the kitchen rather than mingling with your guests. Plus it avoids any ‘hangry’ moments from the kids.

7. Get your house – and yourself – ready About a week before, give your home a good clean, so that on the day you can just run the hoover around quickly. Put away breakables and have a count up – do you have enough plates, cutlery and so on? Buy more or arrange to borrow some. Think about what you’re going to wear and try it on, so you’re not still in your underwear as guests are knocking at the door. On the day itself, enlist the help of your family to get everything done and don’t forget to save yourself enough time for a relaxing bath and time to get ready so you can enjoy the party too!

North West London NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

And finally… If your guests will be drinking, think about how they will get home (they can of course choose designated drivers) and organise local taxis for those who would rather leave their car at home. If you have the space, you may want to offer a bed to a few people overnight. Also, think about giving them a party bag with a small bottle of mineral water and a piece of cake or a biscotti in it. They will thank you in the morning! Get more fantastic party ideas from Families Online: www.familiesonline.co.uk/party By Sally J Hall Sally J. SNOWBALLS

Everyone loves chocolate and these little snowball shaped truffles are great as a Christmas themed treat. • 2 tbsp double cream • 200g good white chocolate, chopped • Half tsp vanilla extract • 2 tbsp desiccated coconut • Mini cake cases Put the chocolate pieces in a pudding basin and set it over a pan of hot water, with the double cream. Bring to a simmer and then turn the heat down low. You’ll need to supervise your child at this stage, as steam can burn. Stir with a wooden spoon until the chocolate has melted into the cream. Add the vanilla, take off the heat and chill for one hour. It should then be firm but still loose enough to work with. With a teaspoon, each take a small amount of the chocolate paste and roll it in a ball between your palms. Then roll it in the coconut and you have little snowball shaped truffles. Place each completed one inside a mini cake case. Pop some inside a jam jar to give as a gift and add little playful touches such as tiny robins and Christmas trees that you use as cake decorations.

MINI PRETZELS

Embrace the inner European in you with these German snacks • 3 tsp honey • 1 and a half packets dried yeast • 800g plain flour • 1 and a half tsp salt • 6 tbsp olive oil • 6 tbsp baking powder • 2 egg whites • Coarse sea salt for sprinkling Mix together one of the tablespoons full of honey with 500 ml warm water in a measuring jug and add the yeast. Stir it until the yeast has completely dissolved and becomes a little foamy. Then in a bowl, mix together the flour and the salt. Add the oil, the yeast and water mixture and the rest of the honey and work with a wooden spoon and then hands to make a dough. Now comes the fun part. Put the ball of dough onto a floured board or work surface and let the kids get kneading. It needs about ten minutes, adding a bit more flour as you go if it gets too sticky. Return the dough to the bowl and cover with a tea towel and set in a warm place to rise for about 1 hour. Take the dough out and knead all over again for five minutes

this time. Then break the dough up into little balls – you should make 24. Roll each one out into a long rope, then bring the ends together and twist it twice near the top of the loop to make a pretzel shape. A little practice makes it perfect. Let them rest for 15 minutes. Next, you have to poach the pretzels – this is what gives them their fluffy inside. Put the baking soda in a large pan of water, brig to the boil, then poach each pretzel on each side for just around 15 seconds. Work in batches. Finally, lay them on a flat baking tray lined with baking parchment, brush with egg white and sprinkle with coarse salt and then bake at 450 F 220 C Gas 6 for 15 minutes.
