News & Views from around North West London Little Stars Pre-School Celebrate Graduation Day with New Mayor of Harrow As the summer term drew to a close in July, the new mayor of Harrow Counsellor Ajay Maru attended the annual graduation ceremony at Little Stars Pre-School awarding certificates and photographs taken for all children joining Primary School in September and ready to commence reception year. It was a memorable day for parents also to see their children develop from the time they joined Little Stars and became so confident, mature and independent.

The ceremony was then followed by Pizza Barbecue with live cooking outdoors and social networking which all children and parents enjoyed very much.

News and Views Volunteers sought for New Team based on Starfish Children’s Ward, Watford General Hospital The Carer Support Team on the Starfish Children’s Ward at Watford General Hospital is looking for new volunteers to work with them for 3 hours per week for a period of at least one year.

The Ward is usually very busy with twenty two beds for children aged up to sixteen years old. Most admissions are unplanned and carers often lack a 24/7 support network. A Team volunteer might be asked to sit with a child while the carer takes a shower or help the carer compile a list of questions to ask their child’s consultant.

The Team also distributes information sheets to carers, which set out all the essential information they need to know about the Ward and the Hospital.

All applicants will be asked to complete a written application, and if successful, they will be asked to a brief interview before being selected as a member of the Team.

TUTORING and what it entails The world of education outside school can be quite daunting for parents, especially for those of a first child.

R

ecent economic challenges have shown ever increasing numbers are now turning to Grammar Schools because private schooling is beyond their budget. These schools are often difficult to get places in – entry standards are high and your child needs to be prepared for the selection process in order to compete.

As well, I get many parents telling me they are shocked to find their children are expected to know more than the school has taught them when sitting 7+ exam and 11+ exam and yet have been attending a ‘good’ school or maybe even paying for a private education. A state school child who has had a good tutor since starting school may be better prepared for an external exam than a privately educated child with no outside help. But of course, the kind and quality of help you get from what is available is also a point of concern for parents who do not know the best way forward. There is so much available, for example, test programmes, one-to-one tuition, group tuition and reading groups.

So how do you choose?

Some tutors offer a combination of groups and one-to-one, which I believe is the best way forward, and can make the process of having your child tutored more financially affordable. Children love the working club atmosphere of groups and often learn a lot from each other, and a good tutor will be able to deal with their

individual problems in the oneto-ones they have together.

You need to ring the tutor and have a lengthy chat about your child. Finding out whether the tutor is full-time or parttime (what else do they do?) and how long they have tutored, is also important. Like every other profession, experience counts - especially when preparing for entrance exams that involve multiple choice questions, English essay writing, comprehension work, verbal and non-verbal reasoning and maths. Persevere until you find the right tutor for your child and their needs.

So when do you start tutoring for your child?

As soon as possible would be my advice, but only you will know when your child is ready. Projecting your anxiety onto a child is not going to be helpful. If you are in any doubt speak to a tutor. They will be able to help and can do an assessment.

If the child is not ready to embrace additional learning a good tutor will tell you immediately and give you advice on ways in which you can encourage your child to learn before you consider a more formal approach again. But do think ahead – getting a tutor for your child when they are 9+ is probably too late, especially

if they are facing entrance exams at 11 and especially as they are now set in the September of year 6.

Exams are not the only reason for having a tutor. They are there to help your child to reason, become more inquisitive and acquire learning skills. A good tutor will give your child a great start. Once a child starts to enjoy learning and benefits from the experience at school the parental involvement with a child’s development becomes much more enjoyable for all involved. It could be the best gift you will ever give your child.

Starting Nursery Sage advice from an ‘Outstanding’ provider!

A

good nursery will arrange at least one pre-visit for you and your child prior to starting.

This pre-visit serves many purposes. The staff will want to find out about you and your little one; this will involve a chat and possibly completing a simple questionnaire. This background information will help your child to feel welcome and relaxed when they start; Mrs Gocher, Head of Aldenham Prep school believes “Something as simple as having a favourite toy or picture on your peg can make all the difference on the big day.

This first visit can be very daunting for you both so do not worry if your child does not want to talk or join in, they should not be pushed into ‘performing’ in front of staff. It is very important that this first experience is both happy and comfortable and it is very common for children to just want to observe what is going on around them.”

Introduce your child to their key worker/room supervisor. Mention their names before you start so your child recognises them; these are the grownups they will be turning to.

Children will be encouraged to have some independence once they are at school. Encouragement and praise is helpful outside of school, for example give rewards for doing up their own buttons or putting on shoes. Make sure clothes are as practical as possible so children can achieve without the hindrance of tricky fastenings.

Find out what the day will involve and what activities they are likely to be doing.

It is not unusual for a child when after a very busy day upon being asked what they have done, to say they have done nothing.

The more you know about what they are doing the more you can engage them in conversation. This can be as simple as

knowing what they had for lunch.

Mrs Gocher commented “We encourage parent partnership as much as possible. Our weekly newsletter lets everyone know what we have been doing but also what we are planning for the following week. The children are encouraged to bring items in from home that are related to the topics of the week and parents are asked to complete ‘I spy’ books and read library books with their children. Our open and welcoming approach invites parents to become more involved and likewise feel comfortable expressing any concerns.”

On the first day stay happy and confident. Make sure you say goodbye, but do not prolong your farewell as this helps no one. It might be that a member of staff will have to help you and your child part, but most children settle very quickly and a good nursery will encourage you to call after a short while to put your mind at rest – if they have not contacted you first to inform you of progress. Most children will cry at some stage, some will cry on the first few days, others will cry once they realise that coming to school is not a temporary arrangement. Tears are a very normal way of coping with change and unfamiliar experiences for young children and will pass as they become more familiar with routines and expectations.

The ethos of the Early Years Foundation Stage is very much about the unique child so nursery days are very flexible; do not expect a set timetable for this age group. Mrs Gocher added “Whilst there is careful planning underlying everything we do it is very important that child initiated activities are encouraged and changes to the day are accommodated and opportunities taken. The daily routine of snack time

includes encouraging good manners and respect for each other. Sharing and taking turns are emphasised, the opportunity to be the helper builds confidence and independence, counting pieces of fruit and cups develops numeracy skills and there is the opportunity to discuss staying well and keeping healthy.”

It is important that you encourage your child as they develop and reinforce what they are learning in nursery. Encourage good manners and independence; visit your local library for story times not only for the interaction but also for improving listening and sitting still. Your nursery will become an important part of your and your child’s life; play dates with new friends, visits to parks with other mums will become part of your routine and should be relished.

Education With the new school year ahead…

What can parents do to promote positive aspirations in their children?

Children’s educational aspirations are strongly linked with those of their parents and peers. The years of eleven to fourteen are crucial in shaping the aspirations that will inform the life choices of your child. It is during this time, the ambitions of young people transition from more idealistic to more realistic.

A

s a new school year begins, parents often reflect on their aspirations and dreams for their children. Will my child reach their potential? Can I do anything to help? Of course you can, but first, be realistic.

You need to know how clever your child is in relation to other children of the same age in their year group and nationwide.

Ask your child’s class teacher, or head of year. Should you have concerns, talk to your child’s teacher; make an appointment to see the head of department or head teacher.

Ensure that the correct resources are in place, at home and at school, thus creating the right balance between school input, and home support.

Today, children would rather be pop stars than teachers or lawyers (The Telegraph, 2014). Twenty five years ago, children wanted to become teachers, bankers or doctors, just one generation later, traditional careers are losing out to the search for stardom. Researchers asked three thousand British parents with children aged five to eleven about their dreams and asked about their own career hopes when they were young. It seems that what children watch on TV, is now competing with their parents, as the biggest influence on children’s choice of careers. Almost three quarters of parents said that the media is the single biggest influence on their children’s ambitions and over half, cited the TV their children watch as the greatest factor. (The Telegraph, October 2009).

You can help by allowing your children free range to explore what interests them and share their interests - discover what excites them; create a safe home environment where they feel free to share their fascinations, emotions and exhilaration. Build Lego together, play board games and help them to be passionate about what they like. Share your own interests with them and let them see you excited about a problem, or discovery, and fulfilled by your own work.

Your positive attitude towards their teacher at school is vital. Children pick up negative attitudes and will think such an attitude is acceptable, which potentially can make problems worse and difficult to resolve. Talk about school together and help your child to develop good, independent work habits and positive attitudes towards learning. This, combined with a close and trusting relationship, will help your child develop the right aspirations.

What all parents need to know about Parent Power

A

2007 study by the Centre on Education Policy (CEP) in the US, found that “When we controlled for other factors, family background was the biggest determiner of how a kid was going to do,” said Diane Stark Rentner, Deputy Director of the CEP. There’s a direct correlation between academic success and those children whose parents have characteristics (such as higher levels of education). Highly engaged parents tend to value and prioritise education and community connectedness: “Parents can help fuel a child’s curiosity and creativity and need to be as engaged with their child’s school as possible.”

But what if you are not ‘that kind of Parent?’

Parents realise that their child’s future is in their hands and are increasingly aware of the many resources available to support the academic and personal development of their children outside of the traditional classroom through for example, supplementary education opportunities. Although these may not be possible for some (and the only way for others), parents need to be involved

and make informed choices for the short, and long term goals for their children.

Since families are not bound by ‘catchment areas’ when deciding which supplementary school is best for their child, supplementary schools are increasingly mitigating the adverse effects of the post code lottery. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) has officially recognised the constructive contribution that supplementary education makes. Since everybody can’t say it is their fortune to live in a ‘good neighbourhood’; some savvy parents are enrolling their children into supplementary schools during term-term and summer schools, to bridge the gap between the education and self-development that they are otherwise missing out on.

Often class numbers are smaller in a supplementary school environment which allows each child more personal attention.

Focus can be given to pupil’s specific needs and learning gaps are more readily identified.

Good supplementary education will mirror cohorts of like-minded parents who model positive attitudes to learning and share a commitment for their children to

Why it’s important for children to do after school activities...

Whether or not you reckon you might be raising the next Picasso or David Beckham, there’s no doubting the benefits of after school clubs.

By Susan Tomlinson From ballet to basketball and art to archery, there’s an after school activity out there for every child. And they’re brilliant for all sorts of reasons – not just learning a new skill.

For a start, after school clubs give kids the chance to let off steam outside of the classroom. When you consider that in many countries around the world, kids don’t even start school until 6 or 7 years old, a full day in the classroom for youngsters can be a big ask and an alternative to the three R’s at the end of the day can be hugely rewarding.

As clinical psychologist Dr Julie Fraser, puts it: “It’s an opportunity for kids to explore different talents. Not everyone is brilliant at academic subjects and it’s a chance for your kids to shine outside of the classroom.”

She adds: “Learning a new skill can also affect what happens in school – kids feel more confident and able to try new tasks.”

Certainly all the research shows this to be the case. Every leading study into extra curricular activities demonstrates that academic grades actually improve when kids participate in outside school clubs. One 2005 study from the US actually showed that kids who attended clubs performed much better in maths and verbal reasoning tests than kids who didn’t.

But kids clubs are not only great for improving academic levels but for developing important life skills too.

“It’s brilliant for developing social skills, dealing with new environments, talking to different adults and mixing with different children,” says Dr Fraser. “But best of all, after school clubs are confidence building.”

Team sports like football, rugby, and netball are not only brilliant for keeping kids active but also helping them learn team work where they can begin to appreciate what’s good for the whole team, rather than just thinking of themselves. Competitive sports are also great for learning difficult life lessons like being a gracious winner and loser. But for team building clubs with a less competitive edge, you could consider Woodcraft Folk, Guides and Scouts.

Learning a musical instrument is great for discovering the art of practice, patience and persistence. Drama clubs are great for shy kids who learn to find their voice singing and acting alongside others, while ballet and dance are great for kids to learn discipline and self-expression.

The list is endless. There are clubs for almost anything you can imagine. Archery, chess, horse riding, computer clubs, film making and even circus skills are all proving popular alongside the more traditional arts

and crafts, swimming, tennis and karate.

There are clubs for nature lovers run by the Woodland Trust, BMX biking for tots, and even kids yoga and tai chi.

There’s so many to choose from, it’s tempting to try them all but it’s also important not to overburden kids with too many activities. Frantically driving from one after school club to the next seems to be missing the point. New skills, team work and confidence building aside, the most important thing to think about when deciding which club to choose is surely the fun factor.

After that, the trick is to stay involved.

“It’s important to talk with the teacher, find out how they work and show an interest in the class,” says Dr Fraser. “That way you can be sure your child really is enjoying the club, and you will begin to watch them flourish and grow.”

It doesn’t matter who wins or loses… or does it?

A

s a PE teacher with over 20 years’ experience it’s fair to say I’ve seen some PE trends come and go, from kids doing cross-country in the snow to Sports Day races being banned.

Some things have improved over time but sadly there’s still a school of thought that believes asking children to compete is wrong. Indeed, a survey of 8-16 year olds by Marylebone Cricket Club and Chance to Shine suggested the majority of children would be happy to see the competitive element removed from school sport.

However, we want to see children succeed in sport, even representing our country at international levels, and unfortunately you can’t have it both ways. Elite athletes need to learn how to compete, what it feels like to win and, more importantly, what it feels like to lose. Children need to be encouraged to push further to realise their potential. And there’s no harm in doing that, provided the goals are realistic, the child is engaged and the support structure is in place to catch them when they fall.

The key to this is engaging kids in the benefits of physical activity at a much earlier age. Fit For Sport did just that as part of

our ‘Engage to Compete’ primary schools programme with Sport England last year, and the answers were revealing.

After taking part in our fun pilot, we asked children aged 4-11 how competition made them feel. The responses were overwhelmingly positive with the vast majority stating that competition made them feel happy, excited and confident as opposed to nervous, afraid or worried. When we asked them outright if they liked taking part in competitions, 86% said yes.

That’s 86% of children who like taking part in competitions, once they are engaged in physical activity at a younger age.

And it’s not just about being active in school, it’s about being an active family. Children learn so many of their traits from their parents, why should physical activity be any different? Parents have just as much responsibility, if not more, than schools to ensure their kids are eating right, learning to live a healthy lifestyle and engaging in fun activity as a family unit.

After all, an active family will lead to a healthy family and surely that is something to strive for in life.

fter a VERY late lie-in caused

by VERY late unsupervised tv watchage and probable extreme - loom-banding, it was difficult to scrape Midi-Me out of bed but eventually, she emerged, warm-faced and scribbleeyebrowed. I couldn’t be too cross that she wouldn’t get up because I had risen only an hour before that, thinking it was 8.30am and realising it was actually 12.30pm. Luckily it was Sunday. We were severely jet-lagged after our trip to Vancouver. The morning I had envisioned, therefore, padding around my bedroom in my Ragdale Hall Hotel slippers (I LOVE hotel slippers!) hair in curlers, idly perusing my closet for 50s friendly garb disintegrated before I could say “Great Scott!”

It was Secret Cinema day and even though we had been looking forward to it for a month, we had understandably not given much thought to what we would wear. Amongst the copious emails they sent in advance, there was one that stated prom-dresses were the order of the day but after the thunderous downpour that woke me up, I just couldn’t countenance that idea. So I went as Bad Sandy from Grease instead. Midi-Me wanted to be Marty McFly himself and that would have been the sensible option, layering up jeans, denim jacket and bodywarmer, however I planted the idea of her spotty fifties dress that she’ll soon grow out of, neck scarf, denim jacket and high pony tail. She looked cool! And I looked smokin’ hot! Just the way it should be.

Secret Cinema, you see, is an event; they don’t just show you the movie, they re-create it so that as soon as you arrive, you step into the scenes that unfold around you. This event’s film was Back to the Future and they had transformed the Olympic park adjacent to Westfield shopping centre into the town square of Hill Valley, mid 20th Century America.

(With a John Lewis staring down at you but after a while it was okay – sort of took the place of the Sears store in the movie!)

So the whole point of the Secret Cinema lark is that as soon as you arrive, you are drawn into the scene with actors pacing around, involving you in what’s happening. As we queued to enter, we were happily harassed by a wellbuilt “Biff” (the bully) and we watched as “Marty” in his signature red bodywarmer whizzed by with some friends on skateboards, stunt-jumping over a public bench. The attention to detail was really quite impressive; little houses belonging to families in the film had been mocked up, containing 50s style

furniture and memorabilia; actors with dodgy American accents paraded around and interacted with everyone brilliantly, never losing character. There was a high-school dance with dancers hopping around, drawing us into the fun and of course Midi-Me and I (-never one to shy away from bad bopping and doing dodgy American accents-) got seriously involved.

At around 9pm, when it was much darker, special guest Bob Gale (co-writer and producer of the movie) came on to give a short, heart-warming speech and then he SAT RIGHT IN FRONT OF US on the damp green.

It was mondo exciting and I couldn’t help stealing a glance at the (very meta) sight of him, experiencing the audience watching his film, using his phone to film some of the more exciting theatrical bits where actors played out the scenes as they happened in the movie, right there before our eyes, even driving off in the famous Delorean car and zipwiring from the re-created clock tower above the screen to the ground. Midi-Me was enthralled and actually so was I. The atmosphere was electric (which is an appalling cliché but it really was!) By the end of the night, our derrieres were very damp but it was nothing that a hairdryer and a hot chocolate couldn’t fix. Since doing some digging, I’ve found out plans are afoot for a Back to the Future musical to coincide with the 30 year anniversary

next year. Who knows; maybe in the future we’ve already gone back and seen it!

and shapes with food to encourage their children to eat and 47% have involved their children in preparing and cooking food as a way to help them have a positive relationship with food.

A recent survey on fussy eating found that 89% of London parents have children who are fussy eaters. The research, commissioned by Abbott, has also shown that 86% of parents in London worry that their child is not getting the nutrition they need and a further 82% said their child’s fussy eating habits make them feel frustrated. The emotional impact of fussy eating on parents is significant, with 44% of London parents fretting that other people might think they are a bad parent and 40% worrying that their child might go hungry at school or at a friend’s house.

Fussy eating is a widespread issue in the UK, affecting many families and parents of fussy eaters in London will go to extreme lengths in order to get their children to eat well. Almost half of London parents (45%) get creative at dinner time by making faces

Netali Levi, a Clinical Psychologist who works with children who are fussy eaters and their parents believes that “managing mealtimes to make them enjoyable, reducing stress (both yours and the child’s) and understanding your child’s hunger signals are all key to success”. Netali also advises that “It’s important to realise that there are some aspects of the situation where you may have less control. You need to find what works for you and your child but generally speaking, by involving them in the process of shopping, cooking and preparing food, gradually introducing new flavours and textures, and rewarding progress, it should be possible for you to navigate this tricky phase and get them back to healthy eating habits.”

Chores for kids Have a family plan for everyday household tasks and you will teach your kids a great life lesson. Chores help kids learn responsibility, and sharing chores gives you help around the house. Not sure your kids will go for it?

Turn it into a game when they are young, a way to earn stars and later credits when they are older. (and since you ask, no, we don’t think children should get paid to help you around the house!)

Toddler (ages 2-3) • pick up/put away toys • unload the dishwasher, especially cutlery, plastic cups and Tupperware • dust (little ones love a feather duster!)

• collect dirty clothes and put them in the hamper • help move clothes from washer to dryer • put clothes away • make their bed • wipe down cupboards, cabinets and skirting

Why not try rewarding younger children for doing their chores, at least when you first introduce them? For older children chores can become a normal part of their day.
