EDUCATION
Preparing for school By Emma Lewry No sooner has summer arrived than we are starting to talk about ‘starting school’ or ‘back to school’ preparation. Uniforms line the shop rails, tempting us to think about being organised and ready for school. If you’re ready to think ahead, here are some top tips for preparation. If your child is starting school this year it can feel like a huge event with lots of pressure and often comparison between parents about how ready their children are. Try not to compare; each child is unique and individual in their strengths and in the areas with which they need support. Teachers are ready for this, and they know how to support lots of different children in a class. In fact, the uniqueness of each child is often what they love best about the job! When you start to think about preparing your child to begin school there are some key skills which are beneficial to practise and develop. I’m not talking about academic things; your child doesn’t need to be able to read the alphabet or do the two times table. The three skills I recommend are building CONFIDENCE, COMMUNICATION and INDEPENDENCE. You can do these through play and fun at home, giving lots of opportunities for your little ones to try new things and offering plenty of praise and encouragement. Talking to your child and reading books about school opens up lots of valuable communication too. If your child is heading back to school and moving up a year group, many of the starting school ideas apply. At all ages, schools want children to be working on developing confidence, communication and independence. It can be helpful to offer emotional support in the lead up to back to school, especially if your child is moving to a new school. Talk about what will be different but also what will stay the same. These constants support many children’s need for things to feel safe and familiar. What if your child isn’t keen on talking? Looking at pictures, reading stories and role-playing school are all great ways to initiate conversation over the summer.
Independence Building independence is important for children of all ages. Children who are independently motivated to play, complete tasks and try new things will often excel at school across the age ranges. Here are two ideas to try before school starts: Give your child ownership over one meal that they can plan and prepare for the family, with appropriate support for their age. It could be a simple breakfast that they get to choose and make or a more complex dinner. Any activity like this means they are getting a feel for completing a task, and the pride they feel will boost their desire to try other independent tasks. Don’t rush in to help them when they are struggling. Sit on your hands, count to fifty or do something to distract yourself while giving them the opportunity to struggle a little with a task. This goes for anything - from simply playing alone to working out a new craft. Children who are more exposed to the need to persevere are more likely to have the ability to be independent. Emma Lewry is an Early Years teacher, headteacher and mother of two. Emma co-owns Every Day’s a School Day (www.edasd.co.uk) which guides families through starting school with courses, groups and a school starters planner.

Be careful to check the school uniform list and stick to the items and colours listed. Schools are generally strict about their uniform and as it’s expensive, it’s not worth having to re-buy items if they are wrong. Make a shoe fitting appointment now for the week before school starts. If it’s possible to book in with a shop local to you, this is a great idea and will ensure you don’t get left in a shoe panic two days before the start of term! You might feel happy to buy trainers in advance but buying school shoes is best left as late as possible to avoid an expensive trip at half term if your child’s feet suddenly grow. Check out the school website and social media pages if they have them. This is a great way for you and your child to get tips on sourcing uniform, to check specific uniform requirements and to find out about ways of obtaining uniform more cheaply. Many schools or their PTA (parent and teacher associations) will run second hand uniform sales which can be a great way to pick up some bargain items. It’s also good for the planet to reuse and re-love as much clothing as possible.

What are the benefits of PreReception? Sharon Boccaccini, College Deputy Head (Prep) at St Joseph’s College, Reading gives a brief overview of the benefits. What is Pre-Reception? Pre-Reception is nursery provision in a school setting, and a child can join from the academic year they turn four. Small classes, big steps. Pre-Reception provides your child with a more tailored approach to preparing them for the transition into Reception. Children are taught by a qualified teacher, and they tend to have a high staff to pupil ratio which enables your child to receive high quality, individual support (at St Joseph’s, the ratio is one adult to four children). By being in a school setting this makes the transition into Reception easier as children are already familiar with the school routine and environment. At St Joseph’s we aim to give them a head start with their learning too and they may well be writing their name and starting to read. Specialist staff gently set good foundations in subjects such as music, PE and French – which often sees our pupils asking to play the saxophone or join a sports team before you know it!
Have your say! It’s always a pleasure to receive feedback from readers. These were some comments received following the May/June 2022 issue. “I wanted to draw your attention to the article ‘Why am I an angry mum?’ in Families May/June 2022. Every tip in the article can apply equally well to a father, parent (any gender) or any other carer. There is nothing unique to mums.” T, via e-mail Editor’s response: Our readership survey in 2019 indicated that 99% of the readers of Families magazines throughout the country were mums, so articles in the magazine do tend to be aimed at mums as opposed to other carers; however the point about diversity is very valid. There are many people that care for children and face the same situations as mothers. Thank you for your feedback! “I have cut the riverside walk page out and stuck it on the fridge!” Families reader Editor’s response: Great! It’s fantastic that families are getting out on local walks. We are always looking out for interesting new places to discover.
St Joseph’s College Reading is now accepting pupils into Pre-Reception. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact their admissions team on admissions@sjcr.org.uk 0118 966 1000

One of the UK’s most distinguished preparatory schools, Horris Hill, is gearing up to welcome pre-school aged children for the first time ever into a purpose-built nursery facility offering wrap-around care from the start of the next academic year. Construction is already underway on the 65-acre countryside site, and contractors are working hard to deliver the brand-new building which will become home to a new cohort of boys and girls, aged two years and above. The design and layout of the new nursery have been meticulously planned so the youngsters will thrive in a safe, stimulating, and spacious environment. Every last detail, from the vibrant colour scheme to the use of natural light and the partitioning of rooms to provide quiet relaxation areas, has been carefully considered. Mrs. Uwalaka, Head of Horris Hill’s Lower School, will manage the nursery, and is excited about it opening its doors in September for the very first time. She said: ”Nurturing youngsters from a very young age in an early childhood education setting brings immense benefits. Not only does it help them develop daily routines and good habits, but it also lays the foundations for a lifelong love of learning.” Familiesonline.co.uk

Meet the Head: Queen Anne’s School
Meet the Head
Special feature
This issue we speak to Ms Elaine Purves, who is the Head at Queen Anne’s School. Queen Anne’s is an 11-18 girls’ school, which is set in stunning grounds in Caversham, Reading. When did you join Queen Anne’s and what were you doing before that?
confidence, self-belief, and gain the drive to take on the world.
I joined Queen Anne’s in January, following my headship at St. John’s International School in Belgium. My background is very much in education, and this is my fourth headship; I had an interesting Christmas with our mid-year, post-Brexit move from Belgium to the UK!
What have been your favourite events in the school calendar in the last year? Back in November 2021, prior to starting as Head, I was invited to the school’s biennial service at Westminster Abbey. To be a part of such a special occasion was really rather moving. The girls wore their scarlet capes, the choir performed beautifully, and a number of students delivered readings. I felt very much a sense of joining Queen Anne’s history and was humbled to learn that we are only one of five schools that has been granted the privilege of holding a service at the Abbey.
The school is housed in some beautiful old buildings. Can you tell us a bit about its history? Founded in 1894, the school is steeped in history and tradition, with our main building, previously known as Amersham Hall dating back to the 1860s. The school was originally part of the Grey Coat Hospital Foundation which offered girls the chance to gain a serious education. Today, we are a part of the United Westminster Grey Coat Foundation; a prestigious group of schools in which the students benefit from inter-foundation activities. The old buildings are indeed beautiful; in combination with some ultra-modern recent build and internal reconfiguration, we have an inspirational learning environment. Queen Anne’s School girls consistently achieve excellent exam results. How do you help pupils deal with stress during exam periods? We recognise that examination periods can be an extremely stressful time for students. To ensure our students know how to deal with any pressures they may feel, we run sessions which explain the neuroscience behind stress and revision, which empowers them to confidently deploy a number of coping strategies. Relaxation sessions such as mindfulness and yoga and time away
from studying to pursue a physical outlet enable our students to be mentally and physically ready for their exams. All of this contributes to being able to achieve the best possible grades, with students achieving on average, 1.5 grades better than expected at GSCE and A Level. How do you feel Queen Anne’s prepares girls for the many challenges face by women in the wider world? The influence social media has on young people today is problematic, with issues such as identity, stereotyping and equality prevalent in society. The students here can throw themselves into school life. Nothing is ‘off limits’ in terms of curriculum, and there are endless opportunities outside the classroom. We ensure each student reaches her potential, providing an environment that inspires them to flourish; encouraging them to make their mark. I believe we are a place where girls can grow in self-
Although the school has many impressive large-scale events, it has been the myriad of smaller events that I have relished, as they have given me the opportunity to get to know the students, staff, parents, and alumnae. I have dubbed Queen Anne’s the Tardis as so much goes on every day! I enjoy dropping into classrooms, cheering on our girls on the lacrosse pitch, attending the many music concerts and watching fantastic drama performances. What do you like doing to relax? Caversham is a new area for me and my family, so I have been exploring our new surroundings. I love the fact that in one direction, we are a 20-minute walk to Reading station with such easy access to London, and in the other direction, the countryside is right on our doorstep. The picturesque setting of Oxfordshire, rolling hills of the Chilterns and the Thames riverbank are perfect for family walks and cycle rides. We are very happy to be here. How to encourage empathy in your child By Mimi Nicklin Empathy levels have declined by forty percent in the last thirty years, according to a recent study by University of Michigan. This decline in empathy levels is impacting our emotional health and increasing levels of bullying in schools and violence in wider society. So how do we ensure we are responsible parents who help our children connect with others and fully understand those around them? We can’t help but look to the next generation to drive a far deeper sense of empathy between all of us. Studies have now shown that from two years of age, children start to show genuine empathy; understanding how other people feel even when they don’t feel the same way that they do. So we need, as parents, to nurture empathy from an early age. There are many ways we can empower our children to truly develop the emotional intelligence our world needs. At its core, the role-modelling that we apply at home is probably the most key of these, showing our children how empathy looks and how we put the feelings and reality of others at the forefront of our actions. Our children will follow our lead. But beyond this, the secret to creating empathy may lie in the books and stories we give our children access to. Bedtime stories. Day-time stories. Life-time stories. However stories are told, storytelling with your children can
The Look Out Discovery Centre
be an incredibly powerful tool for helping them gain new perspectives and create shared understanding with those around them. Emotional simulation and imagination through storytelling is the foundation of our children’s ability to evolve their capacity to empathise and truly understand others. It allows them to make the leap from their own beautifully self-centered world to understanding that others may feel distinctly different to them and that recognising this is well within their reach and role. Academic research now shows that reading, or being read to, changes the neuro pathways in our brain. It quite literally alters the way we process and think. Creating empathy is, of course, not limited to storytelling alone, but it’s a proven way to support our children as they grow in a world that has increasingly low empathy. How to be an empathetic role-model at home Be present: Try and make sure people always feel like they are the only person in the room. When you are talking to them, ensure you are using active listening to provoke deeper understanding.

Phrases like “what I’m hearing you say is” makes them feel encouraged and engaged, as well as ensuring you really do hear what is being communicated to you. Tune in: We are naturally wired to empathise, yet so often we spend our time with our family, in a shared physical environment but barely connect beyond the topic at hand, especially if we are busy with chores or dealing with long ‘to-do’ lists and family routines. Take an active focus on connecting with the feelings and emotions of those around you at home with a more committed approach to imagining how they feel. Lean forward: Remembering that most of our communication is non-verbal, be conscious of using your body language to promote mutual connection. Lean inward and ensure your body language is open, with uncrossed arms and that your eye contact remains focused. The Children’s Shoe Company’s Top Tips For Fitting School Shoes Children’s feet are continually growing, so it’s essential to have them professionally measured every 12-16 weeks. Top tip - you can check the fit of your child’s current shoes by checking the imprint of toes on the insole of the shoe - there should always be a gap between the imprint and the front of the insole. Worried your child’s shoes aren’t fitting correctly? Look out for blisters or rubbing and how your child behaves when putting on shoes - is there reluctance? Or perhaps they’re refusing to wear socks? These signs could indicate your child needs a professional shoe fitting. It’s essential that next term’s school shoes have a supportive heel cup. This is to prevent pain and postural problems - if the heel is leaning to one side or the other, it’s time to look at new shoes. Whether it’s velcro, laces of strap fastenings, it’s important that shoes are securely fastened to prevent scrunching toes! Look for shoes with a supportive instep (a small bump inside the shoe where the arch of the foot sits).
Happy Single Parenting Looking after children, working, maintaining the house and garden, keeping in touch with friends and family, paying the bills, planning for the future… The task list for a parent is endless – but what about for a single parent? The responsibilities are all present but with even less time and money available for the sole adult in the household. It can be an exhausting lifestyle, but single-parent families can also be very happy. We talked to a few Families Thames Valley West single parents to find out some of their tips and positives about single parenting. 1.
Materials matter, so try to find shoes crafted in breathable and water resistant materials (such as leather or waterproof membranes) to help avert smelly feet and potential fungal infections.
Take it as a compliment when other parents forget that you are single and expect you to have as much time as them.
2.
Accept any help offered.
3.
Attending a professional fitting? Bring socks, and remember that wearing socks with shoes will help prevent damage to your children’s feet (often caused by friction).
Don’t be embarrassed about accepting second-hand items; the children are unlikely to care.
4.
Create a time slot every week for doing something that you enjoy and stick to it.
Advice provided by The Children’s Shoe Company, located in Marlow. www.thechildrensshoecompany.co.uk
5.
Focus on what is most important to the family (the children are unlikely to notice if the garden is a bit untidy…), and don’t stretch yourself to do all the jobs that two parents could do.
6.
Get the children to help out with tasks around the home and emphasise how grown up they are for doing them.
7.
Try and maintain a civil relationship with the ex, if there is one.
8.
Let the children know that you are a team and look out for each other.
9.
Remind yourself regularly what a great job you are doing and how much your children love you for being there for them.

Loddon Valley Nature Reserve
Enjoying the great outdoors By Ed Bassett The school shoes have been kicked under the bed until September, the weather’s looking promising, and there’s the great outdoors to explore as a family. A recent study found that taking part in nature-based activities leads to improved mood, less anxiety and positive emotions, so let’s get out there! Scavenger hunts A scavenger hunt adds an extra layer of interaction and incentive to any walk. Set out with a list of specific animals, bugs, flowers and trees to find and challenge the kids to find the natural treasures along the way. For younger children, ask them to spot different colours - such as looking out for red leaves, ladybirds or birds’ feathers.
My children and I enjoyed a sunny Saturday walk around the lake at the Loddon Valley Nature Reserve recently. An easy place to join the lakeside path is from behind the Waggon and Horses pub on Twyford High Street (postcode RG10 9AJ); this also has a large family-friendly garden if you fancy a drink at the end of the walk. The stroll around the lake is a couple of miles long and so suitable for all ages (although it can be muddy at times). Highlights for the children were the nearby trains (and a tunnel where we could walk under the railway) and a couple of “beaches” where they could touch the water. Highlights for adults are the tranquility and varied birdlife, and it is a popular spot for birdwatchers. The nature reserve is maintained by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxford Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) with the help of local volunteers. Kayaking Kayaking is an exhilarating activity for families with children who are confident in water. It’s also a very versatile activity, given that you can kayak on almost any body of water, including lakes, rivers, streams or even the sea. Tuition and guided trips are widely available throughout the country for first timers. Camping Camping makes the most of longer days and even a weekend spent immersed in nature is a breath of fresh air and healthy, wholesome fun for all ages. Look up at night and marvel at the free light show on offer from various constellations, stars and planets. You’ll enjoy the slower pace, a greater connection both with nature and your family and be ready to return home feeling calmer, less anxious and less irritable. SUMMER HOLIDAYS
How to have an educational holiday By Jemma Z Smith Holidays are all about swimming, having fun and playing games, all past bedtime, aren’t they? Living in the UK, our ‘big annual holiday’ often takes place in the summer and whether you are jetting off abroad or staying in a tent at home, this break is generally considered to be a time that is free from the demands of school and everything that comes along with it. What does it mean then to have an educational holiday? Do you have to stay inside and read books all day? Well, no. Holidays can be fun AND educational. You can use these tips to make sure that your child comes back from their summer break knowing a little bit more than they did before. Get kids involved with planning Whether you are choosing to go to Spain or Salcombe, get your child to look up the location on a map or on Google Earth. They can find out how many kilometres you will travel to get there, how long it will take to drive, walk or fly. This will help them contextualise the place they are visiting, hopefully avoiding the ‘are we nearly there yet?’ questions as well. Learn a bit of the local language Regardless of where you are travelling to, the locals will have a specific vernacular. Learning hello, goodbye and thank you is not just a way to introduce a new language to your child, it is also a great way to get along with the locals. Discuss any similarities between English and the local language, for example, in French the word for ‘dance’ is ‘danse.’
Take an immersive class If you are travelling to Italy, how about learning how to make pizza or pasta? If you’re on holiday in France, learn how to play boules; in Spain, try a bit of flamenco! It is a great way to celebrate a local culture and learn a new skill; after all, not all learning happens in the classroom. If you’re holidaying by the beach and your child likes being in the water, consider scuba diving, fishing or surfing tuition. Waiting games Instead of handing your child your phone when you’re in a queue for an attraction, try some simple word games. See how many words you can think of that are … a type of hat? Trilby, sombrero, cap, bowler! You could even bring along a pocket quiz game to keep you all occupied. Jemma Zoe Smith is Director of The Education Hotel (www.educationhotel.co.uk).

Educational travel activities Here are some ideas to keep your kids ticking over whilst on holiday. Using currency and converting between pounds and local currency; Using a map and scales; Writing letters/postcards home; Writing a scrapbook/keeping a journal. There are also some longer projects that older kids can embark on and many of these relate to the school curriculum. I use these when I accompany students on their trips as a full-time tutor. Creating a vlog or website for friends and family; Getting involved with local conservation efforts; Learning about volcanoes or Egyptians by visiting key places and then creating a poster or presentation; Putting together a talk or a short video which will teach the class about the place you’re visiting; Writing a story for kids about the area that you are visiting. A love of performing can develop key skills for life Whether it be diving into their dressing up box or stepping onto the stage, performing is important to children and young people, and the benefits of this can often go unnoticed. Performing arts can teach children and young people key skills that can be used in everyday life.
Enjoy a PGL family adventure holiday! Step out of the day-to-day and into a family adventure on an all-inclusive holiday with PGL. Let loose and get lost together on an exciting, action-packed adventure that turns the family back into a team. Whether you’re conquering the kayaks, hanging out on the high ropes or zooming down zipwires, there are plenty of goose-pimpling adventures to dive into whilst your family enjoys a PGL holiday. You’ll be amazed by what you can all achieve when you tackle the fun challenges on offer. Don’t miss out on PGL’s final summer sale and the chance to give your family the break they will always remember. What’s more, you can save up to 50% off when you book a family adventure holiday or kids adventure camp this summer! Visit pgl.co.uk/familymag to find out more and to book.
Creativity Children are naturally imaginative, and pretend play and make believe comes easily to them. Imaginative play can enable a child’s social and emotional development, helping them to form new ideas and develop resourcefulness. Problem solving The ability to solve problems creatively within the safety of a performing arts environment can be transferred to everyday life when dealing with a variety of issues. If children feel comfortable exploring and dealing with problems in a non-linear way, this makes them more confident overall. Empathy Performance is a classic form of storytelling, not only for entertainment but for sharing tales and ideas. Performing in character can help children appreciate another person’s point of view. To accurately portray a character, we need to be able to step into their shoes, understand their situation and what has brought them to that situation. If a child understands a character in this way, they can apply this to everyday life, helping them to react to friends and adults and develop their social skills. Listening The ability to listen is an important skill, especially when a child is in a new setting with new routines and expectations. During performing arts classes children take direction from their teachers and peers. This encourages them to be receptive to others’ ideas and work collaboratively. Confidence Building Some children are never happier than putting on a show for their family and friends, but for some standing up in front an audience can be daunting. Performing arts are hugely beneficial to children’s confidence levels. Learning new skills, rehearsing, and performing in a safe space, with the support of expert teachers and encouragement of their peers, can prepare children to deal with situations in which they feel anxious. At PQA, we believe that our three core modules, Musical Theatre, Comedy & Drama and Film & Television, offer our students the very best mix of both performance based and technical training as well as providing them with skills for life to help them grow into well-rounded individuals. EARLY YEARS
What are babies and toddlers thinking? Babies can’t tell you what they’re thinking and toddlers may not have all the words necessary to explain themselves. But sophisticated advances in technology are making it possible to get an understanding of their behavioural and cognitive development. This is the work of the Birkbeck Babylab & Toddlerlab (www.cbcd.bbk.ac.uk), a specialist university research centre in the heart of London, which has spent decades perfecting the art of running non-invasive studies of babies and toddlers, with the aim of uncovering how they develop and learn. Elena Throm is part of a new study at Birbeck which looks at babies’ social interactions and development. As part of the study, she is seeking to understand what environmental cues facilitate the development of brain regions involved in social interaction in that first year of life. This pioneering study combines an artificial intelligence algorithm with babies’ responses to a range of visual, auditory, or live stimuli, analysed in real time. The algorithm uses the information about individual brain responses to the presented stimuli to identify the set of characteristics that leads to stronger responses in the baby’s social brain network. Elena is recruiting babies ages 5 to 12 months to help her with this exciting study. Although babies are happy to sit through Elena’s study, busy toddlers are not! Developments in mobile technology have allowed Birbeck to create studies that work for toddlers and children who are too busy to stay still. These take place in a ground-breaking and custom designed lab called the CAVE (cave automatic virtual environment). In this immersive virtual reality environment, projectors direct images at the walls and floor of a room size cube.
these enable 3-year-olds to use both hands. Lisanne is also conducting studies with older children up to age 6, including one which involves children doing tasks with parents. Using Birbeck’s new virtual reality lab, Chiara Bulgarelli is researching the role of empathy in toddlers’ daily social interactions. Her project will use virtual reality and fNIRS to investigate the social situations and behaviours that trigger empathic reactions in toddlers. She aims to map the behaviours through which toddlers express empathy and understand which brain regions are responsible for it. Birbeck also has researchers studying a variety of other areas, including the development of curiosity as a tool for learning and the impact of socioeconomic status and the home environment on school readiness. If you have a baby, toddler or older child, and would like to help Birbeck with any of its research, you can find out more at www.cbcd.bbk.ac.uk/toddlerlab
The CAVE allows researchers to recreate any environment or scenario of interest, from playgrounds and school classrooms to meadows and mountains. The hope is that by conducting research in more naturalistic settings, the findings will be more relevant to life in the real world. In her current research, Lisanne Schröer is using a combination of motion capture and fNIRS (a child-friendly method to measure oxygen levels of blood in the brain) to investigate whether toddlers brains are interested in a specific task. Toddlers brains are studied via a novel child-friendly ‘helmet.’ Currently, Lisanne is running a behavioural study with 3-yearolds investigating whether children use both hands when constructing a toy house. The ability to co-ordinate the use of both hands at once is thought to develop in the second year of life. However, when the task is hard, 3-year-olds tend to rely on just one hand. Lisanne’s new toy house task will use easy goals to monitor whether or not
What is fNIRS? fNIRS is ‘functional near-infrared spectroscopy,’ a child-friendly method to measure oxygen levels of blood in the brain. It is made up of a comfortable, portable neoprene cap with optical probes including light-emitting and light-detecting fibres. As the fNIRS optodes shine light onto a baby or child’s head, this is then refracted back – like when you shine a flashlight onto your hand. The resulting measurements show the colour of the blood and thus what parts of the brain are oxygenated or deoxygenated and in use. Familiesonline.co.uk
