Local News Surrey Festival a Royal success

Tadworth’s new Recreation Ground

The Fox Revived pub near Horley and Newdigate entertained over 1000 visitors during the Royal Wedding Weekend with apple hurling, Punch and Judy and entertainment from local groups and clubs and even a celebrity visit from cricket legend Phil Tufnell!

The new Mayor of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, Councillor Brian Stead, officially opened the new playground at Merland Rise Recreation Ground, Tadworth on 24 May.

The first Festival of Surrey Life was created to celebrate the diversity of life within the county. Jon Briscoe, owner of the Fox Revived pub and The Jolly Farmers in Buckland was delighted with its success, “All the performances were outstanding,” he said, “and it was great to see so many families enjoying such a celebratory weekend.” The Fox Revived pub has plans for more family entertainment. The next one to look out for is the Fox’s Garden Party on 2-4 September. You can keep up to date with all the news and upcoming entertainment by following on Twitter @FoxRevivedPub or call 01293 862312 www.thefoxrevived.co.uk

Walk under the stars to raise money for children’s charity ‘Sleepwalk’, a special evening 10-mile charity walk in aid of The Children’s Trust, Tadworth, will take place on Saturday, 1 October in Priory Park, Reigate. Nicholas Owen, journalist and BBC news presenter, will start the walk at 10pm. The walk will start and finish at Priory Park. Families, friends and children are invited to turn out in their hundreds and build on last year’s successful fund-raiser for children with multiple disabilities for whom a good night’s sleep is a rare luxury. Registration is £15 and includes a ‘Sleepwalk’ t-shirt, Zumba warmup, mini midnight feast at the half-way point and a special medal for all those who finish the walk. You can register NOW to do the walk or offer other support at www.thechildrenstrust.org.uk or telephone 01737 364329.

“The design and play equipment is fun, engaging and challenging”, said Councillor Stead. The new playground cost £54,000 and was funded from Government grants intended to provide safe and high quality play areas for children up 13 years old.

Babies & Toddlers NCT goes N-appy. (And having babies just got really techy!) NCT, the UK’s largest parenting charity, has just launched the first interactive iPhone application for parents, ‘NCT Babychange’. Free to download, it allows you to locate the nearest baby changing facility in the area. The app already has over 5000 baby changing sites listed including supermarkets, train stations, shops, restaurants, libraries & local authorities with the capacity to add more.

NCT Babychange works by using the phone’s built-in GPS function to identify where the user is positioned and interfaces with Google Maps. The charity is also calling on mums and dads to add new or unlisted baby changing sites to the app’s database, and rate them, so that even more parents can benefit.

“NCT has created a free app that enables parents to support other parents when they’re out and about with their children – which is what NCT is all about.” Said Sally Horrox of NCT. The app is available to download free from Apple; it will also be available to noniPhone users via the NCT website later on in the year. Please visit www.nct.org.uk/ babychanging for full details.

BabyTV, the 24/7 ad-free baby and toddler channel from Fox International, announces the launch of its new video app. Available on the ipod and ipad, this subscription app gives parents and caregivers access to hundreds of popular BabyTV shows wherever they go. It’s easy to use and child friendly too and the bonus is that favourite episodes can be downloaded to your device quickly and easily, and stored for the duration of the subscription so they can be watched any time.

Founded in 2003, BabyTV offers 24 hours of content created by educational experts for babies and toddlers, in a commercial-free environment. It was designed to support parents by providing shows that explore early learning themes through fun, with an emphasis on parent-child interaction. For more information please visit www.babytv.com

EDITOR’S NOTE: So many apps – so little time! Are these apps great or just gimmicks? Some are free (like the NCT’s) and others are on subscription - like Baby TV’s above. Do they represent good value? We’ve started a forum on Families Surrey East web site and would be keen to hear your views. Tell us how you use apps and whether it’s helpful to read about them – or is it just a waste of space?!!

Physical play is being marginalized, with school sporting fields and halls now unavailable for many younger children, sports not being part of the curriculum, and many parents unwilling – possibly even afraid – to partake in physical play with their own children, whilst kids themselves are retreating into a virtual reality world of video games, Nintendo, Wii. Written by two practising doctors who specialize in children and play therapy, The Art of Roughousing brings a wealth of benefits to both adults and children. It shows how rough-and-tumble play can nurture close connections, solve behaviour problems, boost confidence in children, speed physical development, lay the foundations for sporting achievement and regular

exercise in later life, and more. Drawing inspiration form gymnastics, martial arts, ballet, traditional sports, even animal behaviour, the authors present dozens of illustrated activities for children and parents to enjoy together, with little equipment, and at all times of the day or night, whether on a walk together, out in the park, holiday, or inside the home on a rainy day.

SPECIAL DISCOUNT FOR FAMILIES SURREY EAST READERS: Published in May 2011, The Art of Roughousing costs £9.99. But Families Surrey East readers can purchase it at 30% discount – £7 a copy, P&P free. Babies & Toddlers Right time for a baby? Nearly a quarter of all women in the UK are having babies after 35 and the conception rate for women over 40 has doubled in the past ten years. If you are considering motherhood and are 35+, there are many ways to increase fertility and ensure a healthy baby. Pregnant and 42, Claudia Spahr has written Right Time Baby to dispel many of the outdated myths concerning older motherhood. In our twenties we’re discovering ourselves and the world: we may be pursuing higher education and turning jobs into careers. We want to have fun, be free, party all night and sleep all day. And there is still so much to learn, and so much insecurity. Then you turn 30. You’ve had a few proper relationships, your heart’s been broken and you’ve learned that nothing lasts forever. Or, you may already have children - maybe from an earlier relationship - and worry that it will be different this time because you’re older. But you’re also more at ease, smarter, sexier and likely to be having the time of your life. Sometimes you feel a little disorientated and looking for some deeper meaning or purpose. Often this is found in work; the early thirties are those intense years where you dedicate everything to getting somewhere. There may be a man around, but he expresses even less interest in committing to family than you do. Suddenly you’re in your mid-thirties and panic sets in. You and your ovaries are getting old. You might have a partner or husband, but he’s still not ready. Would there even be space in your life for motherhood and making money?

Delaying childbearing in order to achieve a better balance in life be it to find yourself or the right partner, or to build your career can only be beneficial for a child. Life experience transfers well to mothering skills; you have more stability, confidence and patience. Increased life expectancy means you should be around long enough to watch your children grow old themselves.

Claudia Spahr

There’s plenty you can do to improve health, with enough scientific evidence now linking nutrition with good health. Taking an informed, active role in your own healthcare is probably the key to becoming a later parent. And remember that health is far more than just physical; it includes our thoughts, emotions and spiritual path. Right Time Baby features cutting-edge research into neuroscience, nutrition and psychology. It helps you prepare for pregnancy and motherhood; to improve egg quality and get pregnant naturally; to increase your chances of success at IVF, preventing miscarriage and having the best birth possible. Families Surrey East readers can buy the book at 20% discount and free P&P from the publishers. Go to www.hayhouse.co.uk and use offer code PP08. Offer runs 1 July - 31 August 2011.

Breastfeeding and Maternal Response A new study from The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry finds that mothers who feed their babies breast milk exclusively, as opposed to formula, are more likely to bond emotionally with their child during the first few months after delivery. The breastfeeding mothers surveyed for the study showed greater responses to their infant’s cry than those mothers who relied

on formula feed. This was registered in brain regions related to caregiving behavior and empathy. One of the conclusions of this research is that It is important for loved ones to support mothers and help them cope with challenges related to breastfeeding and parenting during this period. Mothers unable to breastfeed may benefit from extra encouragement to engage in sensitive, caring interactions with baby.

Mums in Business

Garam Masala Spice Kitchen by Hari Ghotra

My inspiration On returning to work for a second time after having my family it very slowly dawned on me that my career was now pretty much non existent. I was unable to work full time because I wanted to be a mum and pick the children up after school and go with them to Swimming Club and Gym. The career that I had worked so hard to get had vanished and just turned into a job. I have been cooking as far back as I can remember, learning the art of Indian cookery from watching and cooking with my mum, grandma as well as aunts, family friends and other elders (believe me all Indians are experts when it comes to food!). I helped my mum in the kitchen everyday and through the years picked up tips, recipes, and techniques that have been handed down, along with the stories to go with each dish - from mum’s experiences as she grew up in India. I am so pleased my mum made me pick the mint from the garden for the chutneys, make the dough everyday for the rotis, saute the onions for the tharka (base sauce) and grind the family secret recipe for garam masala.

husband works from home so we see each other all the time apart from when he is travelling! So for now everything works - I like to keep busy!

Dry Methi Chicken

The future for us I really want this to succeed so every day is a challenge. I want the food I am so proud of to be shared so I have a real desire to make Garam Masala Spice Kitchen work and expand. I am working towards setting up Garam Masala Spice Kitchen chefs around the UK, replicating what I do in Surrey and going into customers’ homes teaching them about not only Indian food but eventually other Asian cuisines as well. I am currently looking for like-minded people so I can set this up in other regions of the UK.

When I was growing up, the kitchen was the only place to be in our home as it was always full of activity and vibrance. The women all crowded in, gossiping and laughing - I am convinced it was this energy and positivity that somehow became part of the food. In such an environment the food that came from our tiny kitchen was always going to be special and it’s because of this that I learned to love the food my ancestors passed on to me. For me every time I cook, it’s not just about the exotic spices or fresh ingredients; its about having fun, cooking

My aim is to also create a high street location for Garam Masala Spice Kitchen for people to come to and experience Indian cooking and create the flavours that Indian cooking is revered for and then eat what they have prepared together.

These elements all came together about a year ago and Garam Masala Spice Kitchen came into being. It was very much a natural progression it just sort of evolved. Friends and acquaintances were always asking me to cook for them. My marketing background has been key to moving it from a hobby to a business idea.

What is unique about us At Garam Masala Spices Kitchen we come to you with all the food, equipment and spices needed to cook the dishes you want to cook. Each class is tailored to your requirements. Whether its a oneon-one class, a group session or team event we will get you all up and cooking so invite your friends to a dinner party and make them do the cooking (with our professional guidance)! Our customers love the fact that we come to them anywhere in Surrey with our amazing food and knowledge. My work as a marketing manager continues and balancing the two can be tricky but I fit Garam Masala in during the evenings and weekends. I spend the afternoons with the children and luckily my

from the heart and pouring love and energy into my food - it is only then that simple food will turn into something extraordinary! This is what Garam Masala Spice Kitchen is all about and this is what I am all about - by pouring myself into Garam Masala I truly hope that it too will turn into something extraordinary!

Sexualisation of Little Girls culture and the pressure to look older younger, here are some practical tips to guide you in the battle with the messages from the internet, retailers, the media and peer pressure.

Tanith’s Tips

“Where has my little girl gone?” How to protect your daughter from growing up too soon Tanith Carey’s latest book provides some timely help with the problem that parents, politicians and the media are currently trying to solve. Padded bras for seven-year-olds, dolls dressed in high heels and pole dancing kits for kids. From every angle, our daughters are bombarded by messages about looks and sexuality - ‘the Lolita effect’ - which they are too young to understand. Even primary school girls feel pressured to conform to a thin, ‘sexy’ ideal, leading to self-destructive behaviour ranging from eating disorders and self-harm to anxiety and low self-esteem. If you are worried that your daughter is growing up too soon and feel she is being fast-tracked into adulthood by celebrity

“Just knowing when to say the right things at the right time can really help inoculate our daughters against the worst influences of the X-rated society. It’s also more important than ever to build your daughter’s self-esteem so she is strong enough to deal with the pressure to behave older than her years. Our daughters’ childhoods deserve to be safeguarded - so they can grow into the healthy, confident women they deserve to be.”

Healthy body image. When it comes to diet, the most important things are what we don’t say: Stop making food an ongoing topic of conversation in your household. Even if you think you are spreading healthy eating messages, you are making food a big issue. Instead, without a fuss or fanfare, quietly make sure a good range of nutritious good food is available in your home. Keep in mind that there are no “bad” foods. What is bad is when we don’t eat them in a balanced way. The best thing you can do for your daughter is to make eating normally no big deal, just a part of life.

Computers and children’s vision According to 2010 research for the College of Optometrists, one in five people has never had a sight test or has not had one in the past five years. If we follow the tips (below) about healthy use of computers and display screens, we can protect our children’s eyesight. Children are increasingly using computers within school and during their leisure time, and the rise in portable game consoles also means they are spending more time in front of smaller computer screens. There is no conclusive evidence to suggest that using a computer can cause any damage to a child’s eyesight, but excessive use could potentially result in headaches, sore dry eyes and dizziness.

Looking after your eyes When focusing on a screen you may blink less frequently which can cause your eyes to feel dry and uncomfortable. If your child uses a computer regularly, encourage regular breaks from staring at the screen. Follow the 20:20:20 rule, every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for

20 seconds so that your child can give their eye muscles a break and help increase the rate of blinking. Children often have a habit of sitting very close to a screen; try to keep the distance of the monitor from their eyes at between 16-30 inches. Most people find a distance of 20-26 inches comfortable. The top of the monitor should also be level or slightly below your horizontal eye level, so if you have a family computer, ensure it is adjusted for your child so they are not straining his or her neck or eyes in order to see. Tilt the top of the monitor away from your child at a 1020 degree angle, to help create optimum viewing. During the first 12 years of their lives, much of a child’s learning is achieved through vision. Did you know the difference between an optometrist and an optician? The term ‘optician’ covers all types of opticians: ophthalmic, dispensing and manufacturing. An ophthalmic optician is now known as an optometrist and is qualified to examine eyes, prescribe glasses and/or contact lenses and give advice on visual problems.

Never mention the word “diet”: Over hearing endless conversations with your friends about the latest diet regime can make girls think it’s a woman’s lot to starve herself. If it’s brought up by other adults in front of your daughter, quickly and quietly change the subject. Get girls involved in cooking: Get girls back in touch with food and where it comes from and how it is made. Make meal times a stress-free family occasion by focussing on companionship and conversation, not who’s eating what. Don’t use food to feed your emotions: Don’t express regret or guilt over food in front of your daughter. How many of us have groaned after dinner: “I wish I hadn’t eaten that” or “I deserve some a treat after the day I’ve had.” Don’t talk about “fat days”. Stop sending the message that food is something to feel guilty about. Surrey-born author Tanith Carey is the mother of two young girls. To buy a copy of her book, try Amazon.co.uk. Lion Books ISBN: 978 0 7459 55421 £7.99 www.tanithcarey.com It is therefore vital that children can see clearly throughout their school career. Some areas have school vision screening at 4-5yrs but if this is not in place at your child’s school you should arrange an eye examination with an optometrist. Children won’t always tell you if something is wrong with their vision, as they will only know what is normal for them, which is why it’s important that they have their eyes checked by a professional. The eye examination should take no longer than 30 minutes, is free of charge under the NHS for anyone under 16 and is completely painless. If the child needs spectacles, the NHS provides a voucher towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses prescribed. See www.lookafteryoureyes.org for further information about eye health. Thanks to Dr Susan Blakeney, Optometric Advisor at The College of Optometrists for providing this article for Families Surrey East Note: Check that your optician is registered. The General Optical Council registers opticians. They regulate all student and fully-qualified optometrists and dispensing opticians.

Getting Kids Out

Natural play trail at Boxhill

Here’s a new reason for getting your kids outside: ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’ - the response to an indoors lifestyle that reduces access to local natural spaces. With it comes attention disorders, depression and childhood obesity, according to author Richard Louv.

Plantlife, the wild flower conservation charity, encourages children back into their local parks or countryside to combat ‘nature deficit disorder’. Their website is full of project ideas, information about plants, including their medicinal and other traditional uses.

“Many of today’s adults played outdoors as children, using wild plants as their playthings – making daisy chains, telling the time with a dandelion clock, ‘whistling’ through grass stems and more,” said Plantlife Chief Executive Victoria Chester.

INTO THE WOODS

Our kids respond to being absorbed in a physical activity that also stimulates their imagination. Psychologists call this the ‘flow’, which replaces feelings of anxiety or boredom by profound excitement and happiness.

INTO THE GARDEN Getting out into the garden is good for kids. If there is space to incorporate climbing activities into the garden, a well-designed climbing frame helps develop important physical skills like balance, coordination, strength and agility. Intellectual development is encouraged by the need to solve problems, concentrate, explore and imagine. Play equipment in the garden encourages children to assess and manage risk for themselves, a very important skill for the rest of their lives. Their success will lead them to challenge themselves again and again, achieving more and more, growing in confidence and self esteem. Reputable stockists of outdoor equipment will have a large range of play and adventure equipment on display and good product knowledge. Being able to try things out is invaluable. Look for equipment with the EN71 European Safety Standard. If you prefer to have your play equipment individually made, there are small independent companies that will provide solutions.

INTO LOCAL SPACES Beyond the garden are some great opportunities for kids to get involved in outdoor exploration, wildlife gardening, den building, bike rides and bat walks. The Surrey Wildlife Trust and the Surrey Greenspace Project have a centre in Merstham with a Wildlife Watch group for 5-11yr olds and a Treecutter Club for 10-16yr olds plus other activities centred on Radstock Open Space, Furzefield Wood and Spynes Mere.

Teaching ‘Survival Skills’ is fast becoming an established subject that helps provide us with the skills we have lost. It is a great way to get kids immersed in the outdoors. You can book a day with Priory Events in Nutfield relearning bushcraft skills; or you can visit Alice Holt Forest near Farnham for Den Building, Camp Fires with food or taking part in a Family Bushcraft Day. There are holiday camps, too, (see pages 20-21) that specialize in woodland adventures. Families can take a break together and learn the joys of finding wild food, swopping consoles for bows and arrows, building shelter and making fires. With Green Door Events in Northamptonshire, your bed can be in a hammock high above the forest floor (camping below is an option!). Wilderness survival techniques are also on offer in the Highlands. I recently experienced a brilliant introduction to tracking, firemaking, shelter building, water filtering and wood craft with a professional company called Backcountry Survival. They can tailor a ½ day to a 3-day package to respond to your level of experience, with conservation of the environment always top of the agenda. A great experience.

Box Hill’s natural play trail includes structures to climb and clamber over, things to jump between, or balance on and tunnels to hide in. Risk-benefit analysis uses the idea that risk isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Risks that children can recognise can be an important learning tool.

Whether you are going abroad this summer or enjoying a staycation, the school holidays offer time to enjoy special days out and, even better, to plan them before the start of the summer break to benefit from the anticipation! Taking out a family membership of an organisation can help create a theme for the summer holidays. Entrance fees to National Trust properties can seem costly, but as a member, you can visit all their properties for free and sometimes there are special offers for joining – see their website. Then you can feel you share in the ‘ownership’ of their beautiful estates – without having to worry about the maintenance! We have 25 FREE National Trust family passes to win, enabling 2 adults and 2 children to visit any National Trust property free of charge – so enter now! The Historic Palaces, which include The Tower of London, Kensington Palace, Hampton Court Palace, Kew Palace and The Banqueting House in Whitehall have some great days out on offer for children and families – such as the free weekend of activities at Tower Beach and Wharf on 23-24 July, hunting for treasure by the Thames, Plus archaeology, art and conservation activities and stalls. There are fabulous exhibitions at Kensington Palace too, plus shows of horsemanship and falconry at Hampton Court during August Bank Holiday. Membership for free entry starts at £56 for a family. If you are thinking of heading to the coast there are some great additional activities to take in first – such as the Herstmonceux Observatory Science Centre, near Eastbourne and Hastings, for a halfday workshop finding out what it is like living in space (6+yrs).
