Luton International Carnival Celebrates VE Day 75 8th May 2020 Luton International Carnival is making an exciting return to Luton Town Centre as part of this year’s VE Day 75 commemorative event, which celebrates 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe. To mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day, the early May bank holiday is moving from Monday 4th to Friday 8th May and Luton Council will be providing a programme of activities as part of the National commemorations in St George’s Square.

Luton’s vibrant and colourful Carnival will be a major part of the townwide celebration, moving from its traditional Spring Bank Holiday spot to Bank Holiday Friday 8th May, with the theme of “Give Peace a Chance”. As a major cultural event in the town, Luton International Carnival brings together all of Luton's diverse communities. What better celebration can there be, than to mark 75 years of peace? The Carnival parade will begin at 12-noon at Wardown Park, but this year the route will be adjusted to take in St George’s Square in the Town Centre. The parade will then lead the crowds to return to Wardown Park where the party will continue with a range of music, food, stalls and funfair attractions for families until 7pm. Commemorative events will take place across the 3-day weekend and also include: Fri, 8 May 12 noon Luton International Carnival

Celebrating Motherhood - Pregnancy, birth and beyond

By Pippa Moss, Owner of Karmanuture

Motherhood is sometimes referred to as the most important, and hardest job in the world. While most of us would probably agree with that, I am sure we would also agree that it is extremely rewarding, meaningful and life changing. Becoming a mum – or a mum again – is a really big deal! Although sometimes, I feel that in our culture, the focus is on the material things, or advice overload, rather than nurturing the mother. We were designed to live in close-knit communities and to have continuous support. I wonder if you have heard the saying “It takes a village to raise a child”? It takes a village to raise a mother too! I believe we could learn some things from other cultures around the world, where a new mother is cared for by female family members for a month before, and after the baby is born. She doesn’t have to cook, clean, shop, or do any other chores. This is so she can focus on nurturing herself and her baby. Often, “mama blessings” are held; she is ceremoniously bathed and massaged with gorgeous oils and fed nutritious food. Poems or prayers are read, meaningful gifts are given, often symbolising female support for her during birth. There is sense of ritual to honour this journey she is taking; this rite of passage. After the baby is born, she has plenty of time to rest, recover from birth, get to know her baby, and establish feeding. I feel our culture has kind of lost its way a bit when it comes to looking after new mothers. Many of us do not live with – or even near – our families. Modern life is stressful! And healthcare is often rushed and impersonal. To enrich and honour this important time, why not prioritise you and your baby’s wellbeing? Here are some suggestions that we can make time for: Bond with your baby. Find some time out for relaxation and mindfulness; to relax and focus on your pregnancy and baby. Pregnancy Yoga is so wonderful for all this. Where you can prepare mentally and physically for birth, and meet other pregnant women, therefore building all-important connections. Feel nurtured. Pregnancy-specific treatments and complementary therapies

such as massage, acupuncture, osteopathy and reflexology can help you feel nurtured, relaxed, and ease any aches and pains. Get support. You may choose to employ a Doula. Research shows that having a Doula increases your chance of a positive birth experience, successful breastfeeding, and lessens the risk of postnatal depression. They get to know you and your partner, provide a non-judgemental ear, evidence-based information, and if needed, a shoulder to cry on. They offer support through pregnancy and birth, and also postnatally. Most have payment plans to help spread the cost. Community. Seek out local people, or online groups and communities. Often you can visit a free breastfeeding group whilst pregnant, or a Positive Birth group that meets near you for information and making contacts. Maybe there’s a Sling library, a Home Birth meeting, or an Attachment Parenting group near you? Antenatal classes. There are a whole range available, from free ones run by local midwives, through to private Active Birth and Hypnobirthing classes. Make friends and learn about having a baby! Podcasts and books can provide some great info, and online resources like remote courses and MP3 Hypnobirthing tracks to download and relax to. Birth plan – or preferences. We can get to know our options and think about what’s important to us. E.g. do you plan to use

hypnobirthing, or use a birth pool? Would you prefer not to take medical pain relief, or opt for an epidural? What about if you are offered induction, or a Caesarean? Homebirth, or hospital? Support with breastfeeding? Postnatal Plan can also be very useful. Batchcooking healthy, nutrient-rich meals ahead of the birth, limiting too many visitors initially, ask visitors to help out in the house when they visit. Or maybe outsource some things (and ask family to contribute as gifts if money is tight) e.g. book sessions with a dog walker, or cleaner. Knowing where to go or who to contact for breastfeeding or other support. Out and about with your baby, try not to arrange too much too soon. Go at your own pace. Allow for feeding, nappy changes, feeling tired, needing to eat and drink. Self-care. Mindfulness and time to rest and breathe (which can feel like a long-forgotten memory when caring for your baby!) Postnatal Yoga and Baby Massage classes can offer a relaxed vibe compared to other, stimulating classes. There’s an opportunity to chat over tea. These chats have proved to be one of the most valuable times for many mums in my classes over the years. In conclusion; seek information, find support, reach out, and to connect with others. Support each other. Be part of a “village”. It will make the world’s hardest job a little more special and amazing.

Tech consumer to tech creator By Andrew Campbell

Some commentators regard our children’s obsession with technology as one of the greatest challenges facing parents today. Whether it is YouTube, videogaming or Facebook, technology is occupying more of our children’s time and energy than ever before and drastically changing the experience of childhood.

Whilst experts debate whether this exposure is causing harm to our children’s mental health and wellbeing, we parents are left to ponder how and whether we should resist the seemingly unstoppable technological tide taking over our children’s lives. For some children, a solution may lie in channelling their preoccupation with all things digital into more productive and creative technological pursuits. In this way, they become active creators rather than just passive viewers, skilled designers instead of mindless users, makers instead of consumers. Here are some alternative digital paths you may be able to lead your tech-fixated child along. Creative Tech Toys There is a host of creative technology toys available which may tempt your child away

from a screen and allow them to become the builders and makers of technology. Additionally, these toys can provide a fun and practical introduction to STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). LEGO now offers a range of toys that can be built and programmed from humanoid robots, games, and printers to bionic reptiles and creatures. Or try awardwinning Botley, The Coding Robot (www.learningresources.co.uk) which teaches tactile problem-solving skills in a fun, hands-on way and introduces children as young as 5 years of age to coding without using screens. Board Games for Logic Before introducing your child to coding, board games can introduce the fundamentals of computer programming logic to children as young as 4 years of age. The games require a similar logical approach as coding but are fun and can involve the whole family. ThinkFun (www.thinkfun.co.uk) makes a range of logic-related board games including Robot Turtles for ages 4 plus and Code Master for ages 8 and up. The Genius Square (www.happypuzzle.co.uk) is another board game for ages 6 to adult which uses strategic planning and speed of thought. Coding Coding means telling a computer what to do by giving it commands to which it responds. Learning coding puts children in control. It lets them learn through experimentation

and master concepts such as logic and consequences. You might think coding is too complex, especially if getting your child to learn their times table is a struggle. However, with the right computer language, coding can be accessible to children as young as ages 7 or 8 years. You may consider purchasing a Raspberry Pi (£22 plus VAT) which is a basic programmable computer the size of a credit card, which can be plugged into a keyboard, screen and mouse to form a fully functioning unit. Building a Personal Website Why not help your child build their first website? This will give them the freedom to create, design, edit and develop a personal web presence. They could choose a topic such as a sport or hobby and also include their own blog. There are scores of website creator programmes now available that are free, inexpensive and safe and they make the process simple for all ages and levels of technical experience. Try www.wix.com, www.bravenet.com and www.doodlekit.com which also claims to have advanced security features that allow parents to monitor their children’s website. It’s advisable to protect your child’s identity by password protecting their site. By doing this, you ensure that any visitor to the site has to enter the username and password you have provided. Be sure to only give login details to close friends and family and let them know you don’t want the login information shared. Even if you password protect the site, it makes sense to ensure your child understands how to stay safe online, including not publishing their contact details. You will also need to monitor what they are posting. If a website sounds too daunting then your child could sign up for a free blog hosted by one of the many blogging platforms such as WordPress (www.wordpress.com) or Blogger (www.blogger.com).

Whatever technological path you accompany your child along, they are sure For more tipsto and advice, from readbeing Gabrielle’s blogwith @thelondonishmum benefit creative technology, rather than simply reacting to it. 8

Dealing with Asthma in children By Toby Buckley

According to Asthma UK, 1.1 million children (1 in 11) are receiving treatment for asthma and one of the most common causes of missed school days during childhood is attributable to this condition. The good news is that it can be managed and many children do grow out of it. What is Asthma? Asthma is an ongoing, chronic inflammation of the airways in the lungs. This inflammation makes the airways vulnerable to tightening, causing episodes of difficulty in breathing which are called asthma attacks. Common triggers include allergens like pollen, colds, stress, pollution and exercise. Asthma is managed by controlling inflammation with drugs, avoiding triggers when possible and using medications to treat asthma attacks. Any illness that complicates a child’s breathing should be evaluated by a doctor, whether or not it matches the symptoms of asthma. Whilst there is no cure for asthma, if your child is diagnosed with the condition, parents can work with their child to reduce symptoms by following an asthma action plan. Having an action plan makes dealing with the condition much easier. Symptoms of Childhood Asthma The following symptoms and indicators are very common in children with asthma, though it’s worth noting that every child and episode will be different: ✱ Nighttime coughing, and coughing while crying, laughing or playing; ✱ Chest tightness or pains in the chest; ✱ Muscle pains in neck and chest; ✱ Loss of breath or difficulty breathing; ✱ Occasional rapid breathing; ✱ Chronic cough (sometimes this is the only symptom a child will have); ✱ Wheezing (a highpitched whistling or purring sound when breathing in or out); www.familiesonline.co.uk

✱ Feelings of weakness or tiredness; ✱ Retractions (see-saw motions in the chest from difficulty breathing).

Diagnosing Asthma in the Under 5s Diagnosing asthma in children under the age of 5 years is challenging. This is because, in infants and young children, the primary symptoms of asthma — wheezing and coughing — may be caused by other conditions. It is important to keep in mind that until a child is aged 5 years, standard diagnostic tests used to measure how well someone is breathing cannot be used easily or accurately. This is because breathing tests are not always easy for younger children who may have difficulty following the precise instructions. If an infant or very young child experiences shortness of breath or wheezing coughs, the illness will likely respond to asthma medications. However, the doctor will generally refer to the illness as “reactive airways dysfunction syndrome” or “bronchiolitis.” This is a common lung infection among infants. It can cause coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. There may be a link between bronchiolitis and developing respiratory conditions such as asthma in later life, but currently the link is not fully understood.

Monitoring and Treating Asthma Peak flow meters, spirometry and other tests used in adults can be used by doctors to monitor and diagnose asthma in children aged 5 years plus. These tests measure how well the lungs are working by calculating how much air a child can quickly force out of their lungs. Most children diagnosed with asthma will have to take medication. Liquid and pill forms are available for some medicines. Referred to as ‘long-term control medicines,’ some asthma medicines work by helping to keep airways from getting irritated and will need to be taken daily. Inhalers and nebulizers are designed to get medication straight into the lungs so that they can take action effectively.

Emergency Situations Many of the problems caused by asthma in children can be reduced through proper asthma treatment, which will also improve day-to-day breathing and reduce the occurrence of asthma flareups. Unfortunately, in some circumstances a trip to A&E may be necessary if a child has a severe asthma attack, as these can be life-threatening. In children the following symptoms may suggest an asthma emergency: ✱ Severe difficulty breathing; ✱ Red zone readings on the peak flow meter; ✱ Being unable to speak without gasping; ✱ Persistent coughing or wheezing.

For more information about asthma, check out Need2Know’s Essential Guide to Asthma at www.need2knowbooks.co.uk/product/theessential-guide-to-asthma/ This book discusses the diagnosis and symptoms of asthma and looks at how it affects all age groups. “Your school days are the best days of your lives” – I wonder what your reaction to this might be or, what feelings have just come to mind for you? It is a statement that raises a mixed reaction amongst most adults. I personally found the experience of my primary education as fun, carefree, full of joy and wonder - every day was exciting and my teachers were warm and caring. That was until Year 5, where the class teacher was anything but fun. I remember when we had to stand up until we got an answer correct during times tables drills – for me this meant I was always one of the last few standing. I never managed to complete comprehension sheets as they were pages long and I rarely knew the answer. From what I remember, my Year 5 class teacher never smiled and thinking back, I am not sure she actually liked us. My confidence was shattered to such an extent that even now my times tables causes me to panic. Good memories are like pictures imprinted on our minds, but unfortunately so are the negative ones. This has been such a driving aspect for me as a primary school teacher and now as the owner of The Tutor Train – to create lasting, positive memories that leave children feeling empowered, confident and with a love for learning. How does Home Tuition create positive memories? Children are naturally inquisitive and learn by touching, exploring and manipulating things. This basic instinct forms the bases for most tuition lessons as tutors provide plenty of opportunities to use practical resources to aid learning. This kinaesthetic (hands-on) approach taps into the natural desire of a child to move and be active, therefore increases the likelihood of prolonged engagement during the lesson. The use of games is another fantastic tool used in home tuition to make learning enjoyable and fun. This may include board game style games or ones that involve movement e.g. hunting for answers to questions hidden around the garden or learning timetables songs with actions of heads, shoulders knees and toes. Simply, we are more likely to retain memories that are fun.

Home tuition provides a valuable opportunity to give children the gift of time – time to explore, time to think and time to ask questions to gain a richer and deeper understanding. By moving at the pace of your child they are more likely to feel in control of their learning. This is a very empowering feeling and can significantly increase the desire to learn. When is a good age to start tuition? Home tuition during the Primary years at school can have such a positive impact on how your child views school and learning. By building confidence and a healthy ‘can do’ mindset, your child may face challenges rather than shy away from them or ‘give up’. By providing the foundations in learning, your child may actively participate more during lessons. By being full of curiosity, your child may ask more questions, of others and themselves. Home tuition can create so many positive memories that lead towards a life-long love of learning. We owe it to them to make the start

of their journey exciting and full of fun – they are only little once. For more information on how to sign up for tuition classes with The Tutor Train see page 11 or contact Praema on 0750 0862722. Parent testimonial ‘I am really impressed with the service delivery that The Tutor Train provides for my 5 and 6 year-old. My kids love and enjoy the tuition they are receiving. I love the passion and high quality standard that Praema provides. She really gets down to my children’s level by being creative, enabling and empowering them to achieve and learn in each tuition. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication which you are delivering to my children’.
