Family Fun at the Palace, Stirling Castle
Jack & Jill Markets Nicole Diamond came up with the idea for the Jack & Jill Market when she was pregnant and driving in the rain across Edinburgh to pick up a buggy from an internet ad. Promised to be in ‘excellent condition’ the buggy actually had a torn hood and a broken wheel. It was a wasted trip.
‘I thought: there has to be an easier way’ she says. ‘That’s why I set up the Jack & Jill Market, where mums can buy and sell everything they need for their kids, all on one day and all under one roof ’. The busy markets offer mums a quick, easy opportunity to recycle and sell quality items which their children no longer use. Nicole explains, ‘Mums who sell at the markets manage their own stall, keep 100% of their profits, and they make an average of £150-£300. Shoppers who come to the markets are collectively saving thousands of pounds on quality, nearly-new items like buggies, bikes, high chairs, toys, clothes, and much more.’ The Jack and Jill Market is expanding throughout 2011 across the Lothians and Borders, Glasgow, Fife, Perth, Livingston, Stirling and Falkirk.
Paint a jester and see him leap into life, follow the palace mice and enjoy super interactive displays – history is fun at Stirling Castle. The completion of a £12 million project means there will be lots more to see and do. It all starts on June 4th and 5th with special celebrations for the reopening of the castle’s royal palace, now returned to how it might have looked when Mary Queen of Scots lived there as a girl. Visitors will meet costumed characters including lords, ladies, servants and guards. There are family-friendly displays in the undercroft, where children can meet our family of cartoon mice.
‘My goal with the markets is to keep creating local jobs for local mums across Scotland, who want to manage their own Jack & Jill Markets. I believe in mums having flexible home working opportunities that fit around their family commitments,’ says Nicole. The next Jack & Jill Market will be on Saturday 28th May, 10.30 – 1.30pm at Grangemouth Town Hall. To book a stall phone 01721 725 879 or visit www. jackandjillmarket.co.uk

Kip McGrath Education Centre Stirling has moved
The Kip McGrath Education Centre in Stirling has just expanded into new premises at the Stirling University Innovation Park. Centre Director, Fiona Macdiarmid, a former Headteacher who has grown the tutoring business over the last eight years, is already feeling very at home in their new, modern facility in Scion House. “This is an excellent learning environment for us to continue providing quality individualised tuition”, she says “and our students all love it”. Kip McGrath has been the first choice for many parents in the Stirling area who feel their children need some extra help outside school. Since starting in 2003, over 1000 children have benefited from professional tutoring provided by the committed team of fully qualified teachers. Fiona explains there are many and varied reasons why children may need additional tutoring, but her aim is always to work with each student to provide an individual programme focusing on any gaps in their learning whilst also seeking to boost their confidence. The students range in age from 6 to 16 and tuition can help with specific learning difficulties or simply work towards enhancing a student’s overall learning. “Tutoring at Kip does not replace students’ schoolwork but seeks to complement it”, she stresses; “we are fortunate to enjoy a relationship of mutual respect with many of our students’ schools, because we all share the common aim of wishing to see each child maximise their potential” for more details call 01786 474818 kipmcgrath.co.uk Then there’s a new exhibition where you can come face to face with the knight and medieval lady whose skeletons were discovered by archaeologists. There are three shops to browse and a comfortable café serving cakes baked at the castle. For more information see www. stirlingcastle.gov.uk/.

Taking kids to Festivals – Belladrums top 10 tips 1.
Bring plenty of sunscreen and also waterproofs - Don’t forget a sunhat.
2.
A nice strong but snuggly rug/ blanket is essential as is plastic sheet to sit on if it gets wet.
3.
Nappies for little ones at night (even if they are normally dry) are much more pleasant than a very tired accident and soggy sleeping bags.
4.
For older ones a bucket with a tight fitting lid is a good idea you may find it useful too! The last thing you want to be doing is fumbling around at 5am with a tired and grumpy child.
5.
A first aid kit (with Savlon, plasters, wipes, waspese, midge repellant, calpol, etc)
6.
Wet wipes - hundreds of the things
7.
If you have a formula fed baby, then invest in those bottles that use disposible liner bags (the sort you use for freezing breast milk) and a load of ready mixed formula milk in cartons.
8.
If your child is a little older compromise any healthy eating morals and get prepared tins (glass is banned on site).
9.
Give your kids the same advice you would if you were anywhere else : don’t go off with strangers or anyone without telling you first, if they get lost ask for help from a policeman, a security steward, festival staff or another adult with children.
10. Wellies for everyone!

Canada, Australia and Europe and is the world’s largest part time theatre school. In all, Stagecoach educates over 35 thousand students, mostly at weekends teaching children from 4-18 the discipline of singing, dancing and acting. After the success of the Summer workshop at Stagecoach Stirling last year, we are doing another this Summer on the 1st Aug until the 5th Aug for children aged 7yrs to 18yrs, with a performance at the end of the week!
From the moment students arrive at the workshop, they’ll be caught up in the excitement of fun and creativity whilst making new friends. They will experience the process of casting, rehearsing and performing. Working with a professional team of directors – they will develop confidence and skills in several memorable and inspiring days. Expect to be stretched! The programme is fun but demanding. Students will be challenged to learn lines, songs and dance routines and many other new skills in just a few days. This takes discipline and effort. Through taking on and mastering an acting role, singing with style or other new skills they will find a new and invaluable confidence. They will be an important part of a team. They will discover how versatile they can be and – they will be able to show how far they have come! If you would like a prospectus & application form, please call Kirsten Campbell (Principal) on 0131 337 7774 or email: stirling@stagecoach. co.uk Alternatively you can log to our website and enrol on line. www.stagecoach.co.uk/ stirling Stirling Council – Active Stirling Keep the kids active this Summer with Active Stirling’s Active Kids holiday programme sponsored by the Thistles. Swim Easy SwimEasy – Summer “RapidTrack” Lessons – Forth Valley, Our specialist Oneto-Two Holiday Classes, for children or adults, can be booked a week at a time, from Monday to Friday. Five consecutive lessons can improve any weakness rapidly and any technical correction, or specific area of improvement required, can be dealt with much more easily. These specialist courses offer an ideal opportunity to begin swimming lessons for the first time.
One-to-Two Lessons - The confidence gained from individual attention significantly speeds up the learning process and develops better self-assurance. This allows the learner to discover for themselves just what can be achieved, and the process of enjoying being in the water is greatly enhanced. These smaller classes are especially useful when an individual has a particular fear of the water. RapidTrack Lessons will be available at Donaldson’s School in Linlithgow for four weeks from the 18th of July, 2011. Parents wishing to give their child the best opportunity to develop their swimming for safety, fitness and fun should contact us now on 0131 466 0764 to discuss their child’s needs. www.swimeasy.co.uk Total Tennis (Stirling and Falkirk areas) Summer camps available for children age 5-17 Contact: Gordon on 01324 635 633 www.totatenniscoaching. com

internet safety INTERNET Safety - A guide for parents My child is 7 and already knows how to navigate his way around our home pc. I find this amazing but also slightly scary. In many ways the internet is a great resource enabling both young and old to share and explore information. I feel as a parent that I am being left behind and that my child and indeed most children are far more internet savvy than their parents. However, as parents we have a responsibility to ensure the safety or our children whilst on the net and we can use our knowledge and experience of the real world to do this. There are many websites for parents and children on internet safety; we have listed a few and some tips from www.wisekids.org
10
Learn and Get Involved Use the Internet with your child. Learn who their friends are and explore what information they are sharing on their social networking. Search effectively Allow your young children Internet access only when you are present. Consider the use of filtering software. Evaluate websites Teach your child how to evaluate information on websites. Because a website looks official, it does not automatically mean that its content is true. Communicate about the online world Talk to your children about the things that they may encounter online. Without scaring them, make them aware of web sites with inaccurate or inappropriate content, as well as the fact that people sometimes lie online. Let them know that they can talk to you about anything that makes them

upset or uncomfortable. Remind them never to meet anyone they have met online without your permission, The Internet as a real world Teach your child good netetiquette, and ensure that they understand that the Internet is a real and public space, with real laws and consequences. What personal information to share Explore with them what information is appropriate to share on the Internet, and ensure that they do not disclose private information such as home addresses and telephone numbers. Responsible sharing Encourage them to be responsible when posting information about themselves or their friends on social networking sites. Make sure that they know that information shared online can sometimes be misused. Good Practice: Ensure that your child adopts safe practices like setting their profiles to private, limiting their online friends to those they know in real-
life and keeping their password secret. Security and scams Ensure that the computers in the home have up-to-date antivirus and anti-spyware software. Encourage your children never to click on offers for freebies, or to open emails, files or web pages from people they do not know, as viruses can be spread unknowingly. They should also check with you before filling in online forms. Be present and set boundaries Keep the computer in a “family room, where it is easier to keep an eye on Internet use. Ensure that your children do not become Internet addicts by setting rules about time spent on the Internet. www.thinkyouknow.co.uk www.kidssmart.org.uk www.wisekids.org.uk www.safekids.com www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc

M
y name is Lorna Clarke, I live with my husband Jason and our three children in Dunblane. Our children are Oscar 8yrs, Elliot 7yrs and Sylvie nearly 3yrs. Recently I started working again as a self-employed Chiropodist/Podiatrist in the Dunblane area. I do clinic work at The Therapy Centre, Springfield Terrace, Dunblane, and I do home visits. I’m only working two days a week but find that hard enough when trying to juggle the children, their activities and running the house..phew, just not enough hours in the day sometimes! Contact details: Lorna Clarke 07976 666 003 Why you like living where you do? We love living in Dunblane as it’s a great size, small enough to feel like a village and allow you to walk everywhere, but large enough to have plenty of facilities like the Dunblane Centre, the Library, etc. We’ve also got fantastic neighbours and the boys have a lot of freedom to play with their friends in the countryside which is literally on our doorstep. Favourite shop It was Woolworths until it closed! Toys, party stuff, clothes…but now it’s probably Marks and Spencers, again they’ve got a bit of everything. Favourite park We love the park at Causewayhead, the boys used to have a fantastic time in the summer when the pool had water, it’s a shame they’ve stopped filling it. Braemar Park in Dunblane is good fun and much closer too.
Favourite children’s club/class: Both boys loved Enjoya-Ball when they were younger. However, we’ve now moved onto Stirling Rugby Club where Oscar has a blast at the weekends and Alloa Gymnastics Club where Elliot gets put through his paces. Sylvie loves to visit the Treehouse at the MacRobert where she has all sorts of fun. Favourite day out We love to get outside whenever possible so we really enjoy a walk up Dollar Glen to Castle Campbell for a picnic, or a cycle to Doune along the old railway. When the weather is good, a trip to Briarland’s is great fun, all the kids love the bouncy pillows… including us BIG KIDS! If it’s raining we might go to Perth or the Mariner Centre in Falkirk to swim. Favourite child friendly restaurant We tend not to eat out with the kids that often as it’s never very relaxing, but if we’ve been swimming at Perth we’ll stop off at McDonald’s on the way home for a Happy Meal, quick and fun…works every time! Favourite night out without the kids We would go out for dinner to friends or to a restaurant. Proudest eco-friendly moment Regularly hand in bags of outgrown clothes and toys to Good Green Fun and other local Charity Shops. Best planet saving tip: Switch off T.V No parent should be without: Wet Wipes Parenting pet hates: Pushy Parents Most embarrassing moment: Too embarrassing to mention!
Funniest comment your kids have ever made. Something about daddy’s boobs…!!
Favourite family holiday spot We love the South of France, lovely beaches, lovely weather and not too long on the plane. Most loved children’s book: Guess How Much I Love You- Written by Sam McBratney Best children DVD or tele programme: Hi 5 The kids have all loved singing and dancing around to the songs and playing dress up with them. Most played with toys: Wooden train track, every time I suggest giving it away, even now, they are up in arms and insist it remains. Biggest waste of money: Children’s Comics, they only ever want them for the toys attached to the front and they NEVER read them. Most successful recipe/food: My friend Louise Reid-Thomas’s Banana Loaf never fails to satisfy all the children and the adults, particularly when it’s just out of the oven….yummy! For Louise’s banana loaf recipe go to www.familiescentralscotland.co.uk

Hypnobirthing®: The Mongan Method
Rhythm Time
HypnoBirthing® is as much a philosophy as a technique based on the belief that all babies should come into the world in an atmosphere of gentility, calm and joy.
Mothers and birth companions are taught how to create a calm, comfortable birth environment. They are educated about the natural workings of the birthing body so they see there is no physiological reason for pain. Techniques to achieve a deep state of relaxation include positive affirmations, visualisation, massage and breathing. By overcoming fear and releasing tension the body is able to follow its natural path to a comfortable, enjoyable birth. HypnoBirthing® mothers require less medication and intervention, including fewer inductions. Labours are shorter and women recover better. Babies are more alert at birth and feed and sleep better. For more information and to book a course contact your local practitioners: Marina Colville (www.maternallink.com) and Renee Buchannan (www.yourlifepath.com).
Baby page
Children love music. I am a trained primary teacher and also worked with special needs children. I saw how much they enjoyed music and how it helped their language development. Rhythm Time’s baby class is also multisensory. Baby’s vision and sense of touch are stimulated by using equipment such as balls, mirrors, scarves, lycra, sensory blankets, lights, windmills, foil and bubbles. At the toddler stage the children’s listening and concentration improve. Right from the baby stage a wide range of percussion instruments is used in each session. Give your child the chance to develop language, mathematical, music and creative skills. All this while having fantastic fun! Call Carol 07806 702 054 www.rhythmtime.net

ave you considered using real nappies? Nowadays re-usable nappies have changed dramatically, they are fashionable, easy to use, save you a lot of money, are comfortable for baby, and good for the environment too! A baby in disposables will go through on average £800 worth of nappies by the time they reach the age of 2. By using real nappies instead you can save around £500 and a further £250 if you use reusable wipes. If you would like to know more about the benefits of real nappies, I offer a free, no obligation advisory service, to guide you through options available that will suit every family, and budget. For more information and to find out about meetings and events in your area.
Breastfeeding out and about
It’s natural, it’s healthy and it’s the ultimate in bonding, but many women still feel uncomfortable breastfeeding in public. When you’re out, if you can, try not to let your baby get really hungry before feeding him or her. A baby feeding peacefully attracts a lot less attention than a baby that’s distressed and crying. It is quite easy to breastfeed in public without being noticed if you can sit in a booth or find a seat facing away from the main area. There are many different nursing tops and covers available that can make the process easier for both you and baby. There are a wide range of nursing tops, covers and scarves available at www.more4mums.co.uk at affordable prices.
