Big ears, Little ears The Scottish Chamber Orchestra is launching a pilot series of concerts – Big Ears, Little Ears – for parents and young babies across Central Scotland this September, providing mums, dads and carers with the chance to share the experience of high quality live music with their infants in an informal atmosphere.

The concerts will be of a baby-friendly, 45 minute duration, starting at 11am, and take place in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling between 27 – 29 September. They will be in Stirling at the MacRobert Centre 11am on Thursday 29 September. The programme of music – performed live by the Orchestra – includes well-known classics by Mendelssohn, Prokofiev and Beethoven as well as traditional Scottish folksongs and lullabies performed by popular Scottish mezzo soprano Karen Cargill. Tickets cost £6 for a parent with a child aged 18 months or younger. Conductor Howard Moody said, “It is very important to me and to everyone involved in Big Ears, Little Ears that the next generation enjoys the wonders of live orchestral music as much as we do. There’s no better time to start that process, so come along and relax into a real shared concert. Music is for everyone! At last a professional orchestra isn’t afraid to share their music-making with possibly the most active listeners. Enjoy!” In launching this series, the SCO aims to provide an affordable and accessible shared experience for parents and babies where they can enjoy a performance by an internationally renowned orchestra. Funky Rascals

Welcome to Off the Page 2011!

With summer now over, our thoughts turn to how to keep our children warm, dry and, as a result, happy during the worst of the weather and we’ve got a good answer for you - Funky Rascal. Funky Rascal is a children’s clothing shop with a difference. Focusing on unique, fun, stylish and practical clothing, they stock the largest range of Didriksons children’s outdoor wear in Scotland. Why Didriksons? Well, with owner Anne being Swedish, she went for what she knows and Didriksons has been keeping Scandinavians warm and dry since 1913. And not only does it work fantastically well but it’s a beautifully designed collection too. For owners Anne and Graeme Black, with 2 small children of their own, the old maxim “there’s no such thing as the wrong weather, just the wrong clothing” sums up the philosophy behind their choice of outdoor clothing.

This year’s programme is packed with fun, from storytimes and Bookbug sessions for our youngest readers, to more interactive sessions for the primary and secondary readers.

This winter they’ll also be stocking a range of ladies’ winter coats, such was the demand from mums last winter when they saw how effective the clothing was for their children. The Autumn/ Winter collection has started arriving, so take a look online at www.funkyrascal.co.uk, sign up to their newsletter to keep track of what’s coming in or even better, if you’re anywhere near Fife, make sure to visit their very funky store in Cupar. Call 01334 659 047 for more information.

Help reduce waste A search to find volunteers in the Forth Valley to help local residents boost recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste produced is now underway. Local volunteers will be asked to help Zero Waste Scotland promote important messages to help Scotland achieve its zero waste ambitions of recycling more, throwing away less, stopping the waste of good food and changing attitudes to reuse. Every volunteer will receive expert training and everyone has the option to choose a specialist area. Whether you are interested in helping people combat food waste, start home composting, or learning about recycling, there is real scope in the work we will be doing to help different members of your local community. A dramatic day out!

Toy Tester Wanted!

On a beautiful early summer’s day at the end of May, Families Scottish editors, with their families, were welcomed to Stirling Castle for a day out with a difference. We were to be lead back into the world of the Scottish Renaissance royal court to experience just what it would have been like to have been part of the royal court in the 1540s.

Do you and your kids LOVE LEGO, are you Moshi Monster MAD, can you tell your Moshlings from your Puffles and know just what the latest collectable craze is? Well if so we have the job for you....

We were taken back in time by a band of costumed interpreters, who took on the roles of everyone from servants and bodyguards, to court officials and noblemen. The girls in our group really took to the Queen with her love of fine costumes and pearls. Equally, the boys enjoyed a fencing lesson from the male bodyguards and found their jokes about royal etiquette most amusing. The highlight of our tour was a privileged look around the recently unveiled six newly restored royal apartments. Here, we wondered at the magnificently painted ceilings and the Stirling Tapestries. Yet another must see included the Stirling Heads.

competitions

After the tour, we had a browse in the lovely gift shop which was packed with plenty of affordable mementoes. The day for us, ended as all such visits should, in the cafe. The Unicorn Cafe, is a must see. Set in the ramparts, on a clear day you can see for miles in any direction, and whilst sipping your latte, you can truly see why this site was picked as the best place for miles around from which to defend a kingdom. Education Matters Early Intervention

I

t is estimated that 1 in 100 children in Scotland have Autism, and there are many more who experience developmental delays. By early identification and early educational intervention, very young children can be given the support that they need to achieve their full potential. According to the World Health Organisation and a wide range of research in this area, children that are provided with early educational intervention have far better life opportunities in the long term. We are a newly registered Scottish Charity providing early educational intervention for pre-school children aged between 18 months and 5 years who either have a formal diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition or who have been identified by professionals as having a related developmental or communication delay. We provide support for our children in the form of intensive, individualised educational intervention both in a specialised small group class and also in the home environment. We do not believe there is a ‘one size fits all’ approach to intervention and instead we build individualised and tailor made intervention plans for each child in our care, drawing on a range of evidence based methods. We focus primarily on using play based therapy to develop communication and interaction alongside programmes for teaching independent skills such as toileting, feeding and dressing. We also support and train parents/ carers and key professionals so that children can be supported to fulfil their full potential both in the home and in their nursery/ school environments. It is early days for us here at Stirling, but we are already working with many amazing families. We hope that our project will continue to grow and support a significant number of children to achieve their full potential in life and overcome some of the challenges that their difficulties may present. We also support and empower parents to manage their children’s challenges with confidence and understanding.

Is your child finding reading and writing difficult?

I

A unique

approach for n our modern world, learning disorders strong reading skills are crucial to success in studying for exams and to maximise potential in life. About 30% of children find reading difficult, despite good teaching and additional support and in many cases this is labelled as dyslexia. Dyslexia has been defined by the Scottish Government as “a continuum of difficulties to read, write and/or spell, which persist despite the provision of appropriate learning opportunities. These difficulties often do not reflect an individual’s cognitive abilities and may not be typical of performance in other areas”. Sometimes reading difficulties can be attributed to slow auditory processing or difficulties with visual processing. Brain imaging research has shown that poor readers have fewer reading brain circuits and in the wrong places and this makes reading hard work and too slow for good comprehension.

Former Headteacher, Fiona Macdiarmid, who for the last 10 years has run the successful Kip McGrath Education Centre in Stirling, introduced the innovative Cellfield Intervention for dyslexia and reading disorders to Scotland 3 years ago. She explains that Cellfield is a world-first brain plasticity based intervention which directly addresses the inefficient neural wiring underlying dyslexia. Cellfield was pioneered in Australia and the Stirling Cellfield Centre is the first in the UK to offer this scientifically-proven treatment. The treatment is carried out over two weeks and clients (children and adults) achieve gains in reading ability, language and comprehension. In addition, Fiona has also noticed that the treatment can lead to

families central scotland / issue 6

changes in behaviour and confidence, which have had a positive impact on clients’ lives. “In my 30 years of teaching experience, I have not seen anything which makes such a significant difference in such a short time and with the appropriate follow-on support, the gains are sustained” she comments. For parents who are concerned that their child may have language or reading difficulties, their first port of call should be their child’s school. Early identification of difficulties is essential to ensure children receive appropriate help and support. The Curriculum for Excellence Why is Scottish Education Changing? Curriculum for Excellence is a major national educational reform designed to provide a richer, more fluent and relevant 3-18 curriculum which will equip children and young people with knowledge and skills for learning, life and work in the 21st century by focusing firmly on their needs.

What are the purposes of education in Scotland?

The ambition of a Curriculum for Excellence is that all children and every young person will become: • Successful Learners - learning to learn • Confident Individuals - learning to be • Responsible Citizens - learning to respect and co-operate with others • Effective Contributors to society and work- learning to do

Education Matters

What does this look like in practice?

The curriculum is the complete range of experiences and activities planned for children and young people throughout their schooling. Learning in school takes place through a wide range of planned experiences and outcomes in the following eight curriculum areas: • Language and Literacy • Maths and Numeracy • Health and Well Being • Expressive Arts • Sciences • Social Studies • Technologies • Religious and Moral Education Sometimes the learning experiences may be linked together through themes and projects covering several areas of the curriculum. At other times learning will take place in individual subject areas. Learning is also developed through day to day involvement in the life and work of the school community and the wider community. Such activities include a variety of out of school projects and a range of school or community-based events.

Assessment, Attainment and Achievement

Many “Assessment is for Learning tools” will be used by teachers, pupils and peers to highlight progress and inform next steps in learning as they progress through the experiences and outcomes within each level. Learners will no longer progress up the ladder of levels A-F associated with the 5-14 Curriculum but instead they will climb, traverse and progress through a framework; gaining experiences and expanding knowledge and strengthening understanding. Level

Early

The pre-school years and P1 or later for some

First

Second

Partnership with home and the wider community are also very important as young people are involved in a wide range of activities and have other important achievements that many never hear about. It is important that these are recognised and shared in school to.

What can parents and carers do? • • • • • • • • • •

Listen, talk, share and encourage – this has a big influence on young people’s learning Do things together – learn together and have fun together Praise effort Encourage a ‘can do’ approach – ‘give it a try, you might just like it’ Help them to respect others Talk to them about their strengths and interests Find out what learning is happening at school and do what you can at home to build on that Help them to work on tasks on their own and then talk about it with you afterwards Encourage any reading – books, online – it all helps! Look for opportunities at home to develop literacy and Numeracy skills: money, number problems, time, measuring, matching, size, reading, writing, understanding instructions, questioning information Be there – help, listen, support and encourage. Talk to them about how they are feeling.

Through the Curriculum for Excellence we can bring life to learning and learning to life. Lyndsay Macnair- Depute Headteacher, St Ninians Primary School, Stirling To find out more about Curriculum for Excellence go to www.ltscotland.org.uk/ understandingthecurriculum

Halloween Fun

M

y kids and I love Halloween. We love the dressing up, pumpkin lanterns,(yes I’ve totally sold out, it’s just so much easier than the turnip trial!) fun games and guising. The kids love practising a ‘wee turn’ that they go and show the neighbours . We always make sure we have prewarned anyone we will visit that night and only go to people we know. I have noticed over recent years that those who welcome guisers often have a pumpkin/turnip lantern outside their door or decorations declaring their happiness to receive a visitor. On this page we have included some ideas for a fun Halloween!

Halloween Jokes What does a witch use on her hair? Scare Spray. Why did the skeleton not like dancing? He had no body to dance with. What do you call a witch that lives at the beach? A sand witch. Where does a ghost go on a Saturday night? Anywhere he can boo-gie What did the boy ghost say to the girl ghost? You look boo-tiful tonight

Party Games

Wrap the mummy-You will need lots of cheap toilet roll (at least one per person). Split into teams and allocate one person from each team to be the mummy. The other people are the mummy wrappers. Give them a time limit to cover the mummy from head to toe in loo roll. The team with the best wrapped mummy is the winner. Pin the tail on the cat - This is a variation of Pin the tail on the donkey but with a cat. Taste tastic - Prepare a large plate with tiny tastes of edible items(ideas – jam, marmite, toothpaste, tomato ketchup,mayonnaise,pickle….). Then a person is blindfolded and says a number. A taste of an item is put on their tongue and they have to guess the taste. You can be kind or a bit naughty with your selection of tastes! Donut on the washing line - This game can be played with donuts/apples/gooey cakes… Hang them from the washing line on a string, the children will have to put their hands behind their back and use their mouths to bite at the food. First one finished eating is the winner. Pumpkin Roll - Determine a starting line and a finish line. Set 2 pumpkins on their sides at the start and get the racers to line up behind them. At “Go” each pair of challengers uses sturdy brooms to propel the pumpkins over the finish line. Pumpkin Bowling - Arrange a triangle of 10 empty plastic 1 or 2 litre bottles. Players take turns gently rolling a pumpkin at the bottles, with 3 chances to knock them all down. Catch the cat by the tail - This is a variation of duck, duck goose. Kids sit in a circle on the floor. One child, the cat, tucks a homemade tail into her waistband. The cat begins circling the group, touching each child on the head and saying “Cat,” when she decides she wants some action she taps someone on the head and says “Dog.”The dog chases the cat around the circle, the cat must take the dogs spot before the dog grabs the cats tail. Dooking for apples - Fill a large basin with water (we use kids old baby bath) and then put apples in. Everyone then takes a turn to catch an apple with their mouth by going down and biting at the bobbing apples, some people prefer to drop a fork from their mouth to try and spear an apple.

F

rancesca Preston lives in Stirling with her husband Seppi and her 2 children Mylo 5 and Mani 3. Francesca and Seppi are also business partners and together run the successful Lighthouse Studios Photography, Alloa Road, Stirling. www.lighthousestudios.co.uk Why you like living where you do? To be honest, I never thought we’d live in a new housing estate, always thought it wasn’t our “thing”, having always preferred period properties. However we have now been in our home for 3 years – and love it. We are really lucky with our neighbours on the street, having made some good friends. And as for the kids, well, it is kid-heaven, I’d have LOVED what they have growing up, surrounded by friends. Never a dull moment!!!!

Favourite shop

Ooh, hard one!!! I like wandering the little shops in Bridge of Allan – I can pop down there in a lunch break, and always find something original, be it for adults or children.

Favourite park

We live within walking distance of Kings Park, so that’s a firm favourite, especially now the water is back on, my kids LOVE getting wet! However the park at Causewayhead is also good, and is very handy since it’s just along from the photo studio, so we play there if picking up Seppi after work.

Favourite children’s club/class

We do swimming and football classes at The Peak. The swimming has been great for Mylo, who seems to be a natural. Mani has been on a waiting list for swimming for a very long time, so here’s hoping he gets lucky for August time.

Favourite day out

When the weather is ok, we love Briarlands Farm. We always buy a season ticket. We love it because there is loads for the kids to do – they love the jumping pillows, the flying fox, and the ride-on tractors. It is big enough to never feel too crowded, and you can always

find a good spot for a picnic. We did strawberry picking last year for the first time, which was great. Favourite child friendly restaurant Corrieri’s is always a winner with all of us. They are very child-friendly, the food is delicious and the ice cream is great – though it’s just a couple of doors along from the studio and people are always passing with ice creams, and it’s just TOO tempting!

No parent should be without

Wet wipes – I HAD given up carrying these, and have learned from my mistake! Oh and lots of patience.

Best children DVD or video

We recently got a DVD of Mr Ben – yes, a blast from the past. I worried it would seem too old fashioned and simple, but the kids (and me) are really enjoying it.

Parenting pet hates

Plastic toys – we seem to have accumulated so much brightly coloured plastic – when I first became a mum I really wanted all gorgeous wooden toys – didn’t last long!

Funniest comment

Where to start – any parent knows the comments just keep on coming at the ages my kids are!

Favourite family holiday spot

We love going down to the Lake district, the journey only takes 2 hours, and we either stay on a campsite or in a B&B. You’re surrounded by gorgeous walks and scenery – and even though it seems to rain nearly every time we go, we STILL love it! So can’t be bad.

Best children’s book

“You Choose” by Pippa Goodhart – this book allows the children to choose things from lots of pictures – from what job they’d like to do to what pet they’d like. It encourages them to use their imagination, and despite having had it every night for months at one point, they still love it.

Most played with toys

They love the castle that Santa brought them as a joint present last year – in fact it’s been played with most days since Christmas, where they invent all kinds of magical games together. It’s really nice that they play with it so well together – Santa would be very pleased.

Biggest waste of money

Kids magazines – my kids only want to play with the free gift that comes with them!

Most successful recipe

Homemade chicken nuggets, at least you know what’s in them, and they take no time to make. Dip strips of chicken into beaten egg, then coat with crushed rice crispies (I use a pestle and mortar). Pour a tiny amount of melted better on top, then bake for only about 10 minutes at 180degrees. So easy and the kids love them!
