Theimportanceof mentoring

Therearemanydifferentstrategieswhichenablesomeoneto ‘bethebesttheycanbe.’Intheadultworld,thetwocommonly debatedmethodsarecoachingandmentoring.Whilstthey areoftendiscussedtogether,theyareinfacttwodifferent concepts.Asamentortoteensandtweens,Ihaveoftenfound myselfwonderingifmentoringwouldworkforprimaryaged children?

Someinthefieldofeducationmayfeelthatmentoringisnot appropriateforchildrenofthisage.Howcanyoumentor someonewhoisjustgettingtogripswithlearning,formulating theirideasandtheiropinions?

However,mentoringcanbeveryeffectiveininstillingalove oflearning,enablingopendiscussionandpromotingself awarenessatanearlyage.Atitsmostsimple,amentoris‘an experiencedpersonwhoadvisesandhelpssomebodywithless experienceoveraperiodoftime’1.Thisperiodcouldbewhilsta youngchildgetsusedtoanewclassroomorachangeinfamily circumstances.

Amentoroffersadvice,usingthebenefitoftheirexperiencebut alwaystakingintoaccountthefactthatthechildisanindividual andthattheirbackgroundandexperiencesinlifemaybevery differenttothatofthementor’s.
