Misty Mole's mission for better eye health
Myopia – short-sightedness –currently affects 29 per cent of the population and is predicted to affect 50 per cent by 2050. Eye doctor Yasmin El-Rouby has written a series of books aiming to raise awareness of common vision disorders and the importance of early detection and prevention. Her series of books, for 4 to 8 years, follows Misty Mole on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance as she learns to live with myopia. The series: Misty Mole Gets New Glasses, Misty Mole and the Eating Adventure, and Misty Mole and the Big Switch Off, has just been published by Neem Tree Press.
Yasmin hopes the relatable picture books will help children understand the importance of taking care of their eyesight.

Inclusive playground is first of its kind
Fair Play breaks down barriers
An inclusive playground has opened in Finchley’s Victoria Park, aiming for disabled and nondisabled people of all ages to play together without exclusion or bias.
There are 16 million disabled people in the UK, of which 1 million are children, yet Scope found almost half of parents with disabled children say there are accessibility issues at their local playground. Mums Nathalie Esfandi and Deborah Gundle cofounded Fair Play and fund-raised the money needed to build the playground after reflecting on their own children's experiences.
Fun-packed play to build skills and learning
Our nursery is a hive of learning and has a fantastic outdoor, woodland space for children to explore.
Our spacious and colourful learning environment has up-to-date facilities to encourage your child’s development, from two years old, providing a happy and secure stepping stone from which your child can progress to “big” school.
Covid babies fell behind Babies born in England during the Covid crisis have been slower at developing key language, cognitive and social skills according to government data. More than 80,000 children born in 2020 or 2021 did not reach a key measure, including 60,000 who did not develop the usual communication abilities. More: www.bit.ly/CovidChildData
We offer fun-packed activities to develop skills and understanding through play. Our highly qualified staff are dedicated and caring, with a wealth of experience in delivering early years education. New co-ed approach for Ivy House
With Ivy House School now offering a co-ed education, Headmaster Donal Brennan explains how the family feel of the school has been enhanced, feeding into its children’s success.
Small class sizes allow the school to give the children opportunities to mix across the years at playtime and in sports. Donal said: “The nursery children know the Year 5s and 6s by name. They might be the ones helping the nursery children to put their coats on. It helps to create the sense of Ivy House being a family school," said Donal.
“Becoming co-ed means we can be fully a family school,” he added.
Ensuring the children are happy and have their voices heard is essential for empowering them to become selfmotivated learners – a cornerstone of the school’s high-performing, low-stress
approach to the 11+.
“We are very good at walking that 11+ journey with parents. From Year 5, we have a bespoke teaching journey toward 11+ success with the least amount of anxiety. We are academically ambitious about getting the children into the right places when they are ready – and we have a proven track record of success,” said Donal.
“We have a tutorial system within the school which means that English and maths are often taught in groups of two, four or six – or one to one – as part of their preparation. Our children preparing for 11+ do not need to be tutored,” he added.
Donal ensures that through the 11+, life is as normal for pupils as possible.
“We say there should be more drama and more fun when it’s time for testing

Developing a positive attitude towards learning
By Gail Hugman
No matter how skilled or knowledgeable a person might be, their attitude may well be the deciding factor in their future success, both personal and professional.
The second a child is born, its brain, with roughly eighty six billion neurons or nerve cells, ‘hits the ground running’ making connections through senses and experience.
Everything a young child does, feels, hears and sees creates pathways between these nerve cells, building a reference bank of experience. In the first three years, the connections the brain makes have risen to one thousand trillion.
This is an automatic process. Ninety percent of brain development is complete by the time a child is 5 years old.
Although there is a default setting for the brain to function whether we engage or not, when it comes to learning, children who are actively engaged in the learning process are going to be far more effective and therefore, higher achieving than peers who are simply “going through the motions” of learning.
The child who loves practising the guitar is going to progress more quickly than the child who battles with you or resents practising!
The reason for this is that as we

Developing a positive attitude towards learning

grow, the brain takes its lead from what we do repeatedly. Where we make a conscious decision to put effort is where the brain will focus connections.
Children who enjoy what they’re doing, who love learning, who have a positive attitude, actively engage. Active engagement creates the signal for the connections the brain makes to be ‘cemented’ in myelin, a coating of fat and protein which make it ‘automatic.’ This is how learning is assimilated and habits are created.
The brain doesn’t know whether what we’re doing is good or not, it just takes its lead from repetitious behaviour and feedback from our surroundings, in this case, parents and teachers.
The more positive our attitude, the more positive the connections and growth we make, which can lead to excellence in performance.

Put a spring in your child's step with Perform
Perform is a unique type of children’s drama school. Focusing on child development, a specially formulated mix of drama, dance and singing is used to bring out every child’s true potential. Classes focus on developing the 4 Cs: Confidence, Communication, Coordination and Concentration and having the best fun of the week.
The curriculum uses a mix of energetic games, catchy songs and funky dances. All class materials are written by Perform with a different theme each term to keep young imaginations buzzing.
The new term starts in April with two brilliant themes. Perform 4 to 7-yearolds will be entering the Fairytale Forest for an adventure with some familiar characters – much-loved classic fairytales have been mixed them up with the latest funky moves and grooves. Meanwhile, 7-12s will zoom off on an exhilarating adventure with Robinson Crusoe – but he's stranded in space, not on a desert island!
Children of all abilities can join at any point in the term and now is a great time to try a free class. Book a free trial class at www.perform.org.uk/try
