If you decide to sit your child for the 11+ exam, make sure you know they are capable of passing, remembering that competition is great. For this reason you need to know not just where your child is performing compared to those in his class, but also how he compares to the rest of the country, many of who might be competing for the same places. To find out the level your child is working at you can – 1. Ask the school Liaise closely with your child’s class teacher and headteacher – what do they predict for your child in Maths, English and Science for the end of key stage SATs? Find out your child’s reading

Fantastic Opera-tunity for Budding Stars! Local Pupils from Child’s Hill Primary School NW2 were lucky enough to join the professional cast of English Touring Opera as a chorus of trees in Roald Dahl’s ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’, an opera by Tobias Picker. Tim Yealland, Director of Fantastic Mr Fox and ETO’s groundbreaking education programme says ‘Fantastic Mr Fox is an opera that will delight and enchant audiences of every age, with music that is both fresh and original, and a professional cast of animals, humans and machines, as well as 21 local child foxcubs and tress, all performing on a magical set of tunnels, towering walkways and dens.’ The children from Childs Hill School are playing a chorus of trees. They have been learning the music in their music lesson, with teacher – Clare Hoskins for a couple of months in music lessons at school. They have also taken part in rehearsals with principal cast at Toynbee Studios (E1), where they have been taken through some choreography with Movement Director, Liam Steel. The chorus of trees from Childs Hill will perform at Hackney Empire on 10 March. As the tour makes its way around the UK, over 250 children from 21 schools will take part in the production. The production itself is an ideal way to introduce children to music and the theatre. Family operas are particularly rare, but this production aims to be suitable for the whole family, in the same way that Dahl’s stories appeal to a wide age range. The pupils have also contributed artwork and composed songs that will be recorded and published in a book ‘Foxtales’ depicting 24 hours in the life of a fox. Young Highgate Horn Player Proud of her TIME WITH the NCO The National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain (NCO) is the ultimate orchestral experience for musicians aged 7 – 13! Since its formation in 1978 the orchestra has forged a strong reputation as the premier provider of orchestral training and performance opportunities for children all over the UK. Promising young musicians who gain a place at the NCO attend an exciting residential course. The tutors for these intensive courses are drawn from major national orchestra, conservatories and specialist music schools as well as encompassing other leading musicians, giving members access to the highest standard of tuition the UK has to offer. Each course culminates in a performance, with the older participants playing at major concert venues such as Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. Following on from their breathtaking and magical winter concerts at The Southbank, we caught up with one of the orchestra’s Under 14s member – French horn player Alison Mansfield. Alison, aged 14 from Channing School in Highgate, North London, was in the orchestra for the last 4 years. She looks back fondly at her time with the NCO, and tells us how being a member has greatly enhanced her general musicianship, sight reading and ensemble playing as well as being great fun! Current NCO members will be looking forward to their next residential course, where they will be working towards the concerts in Brighton (9.4.11) and Bristol (17.4.11). For young musicians such as Alison, they are privileged to be a part of such a prestigious orchestra. The cost of paid work Having a job when your children are young just got more expensive. Joanna Moorhead explains why. We’re all in this together – we’ve all heard that, many times, from our politicians about our country’s financial problems. But from April, if you’re a working parent you could be forgiven for thinking you were maybe taking more than your fair share of the hit. Why so? Well, that’s when cuts to state-funded help with childcare announced in last year’s comprehensive spending review start to kick in: and what they’ll mean is a cut in income of up to £1,300 a year to some families in London, according to the thinktank Resolution Foundation. Chancellor George Osborne announced last year that the percentage of childcare costs recoverable through the working tax credit system would be reduced form 80% to 70% this month. But, says the Resolution Foundation, many families are still unaware of the changes – and, says its chief executive Gavin Kelly, those on middle-to-low incomes are the ones likely to find the losses hardest to bear. ‘Many parents find support with childcare costs absolutely essential to staying in work, and the big worry is that some will now find that work doesn’t pay,’ he says. And he points out that, coming after recent rises in travel costs, the cuts come at a time when families are feeling the pinch very hard indeed. After all, for working

parents childcare cuts don’t just represent a loss of income: they force parents to think about whether working when their children are young is actually worth the effort at all. Given that the government is committed to helping parents to work if they want to, that doesn’t make much sense. To be totally fair about it, of course, a two-parent family should view the costs of childcare as a proportion of their joint income. But in practice, how it’s seen by most couples is as a proportion of the mother’s wage. And if the proportion of that income spent on travel, lunches and childcare becomes too high, then many mothers start to think: what’s the point of carrying on working?

The policy is one of several deficit reduction measures which will hit families, including an end to the £250 child trust fund for new babies, and the cutting of child benefit from 2013 to families where one parent is a higher-rate taxpayer. What’s especially unfair is that, if women leave the workplace when their children are tiny, they often find their working choices hugely reduced when they try to return to work three, or five, or even ten years down the line. And given that we’re being encouraged to anticipate living longer, and working for longer, that makes no sense.

Many parents find support with childcare costs absolutely essential to staying in work, and the big worry is that some will now find that work doesn’t pay. Many campaigners argue that failing to invest in childcare, and so reducing the proportion of a family’s income spent on childcare, is failing the long-term economic future of the country. After all, working mothers are extremely valuable to the economy: they’re paying into their pensions, they’re learning new skills, they’re keeping their confidence up, and even if they only tread water while their children are young, they’re keeping connected with the world of work in a way that will make it much easier to up a gear when their children are at school. From the government’s point of view, of course, the changes to working tax credit are all part of a cuts package that has to affect everyone in the land. This month’s changes to the childcare element of the credit will save £270m next year,

Weaning is the process of changing a baby’s diet from totally milk based, to one that is made up of a variety of nutrients. It is a process that takes time and one that cannot be rushed.

Until the age of one, the main source of nutrition in a baby’s diet is breast or formula milk. What is the best age to wean? The Department of Health changed its advice on when to wean from 4 months to 6 months in December 2003, to come in line with the world health organisation. However, there has been much debate about this. A report led by Dr Mary Fewtrell, a consultant paediatrician at the Institute of Child Health, London, concluded that exclusive breastfeeding for six months – without introducing other foods – might not always be in the best interests of babies in this country. In fact, it stated that this might even put them at increased risk of iron deficiency anaemia, food allergies and unhealthy eating in later life, because it can reduce the window for introducing new tastes, particularly bitter tastes associated with leafy green vegetables. As a nutritional professional and someone who spent ten years assisting parents weaning their children, I really fail to comprehend this research. It is my belief that children shouldn’t be weaned until they are at least 6 months of age. Research has shown that babies’ digestive systems are very slow

to develop and the enzymes that are required to digest food do not develop until the baby is 6 months old. Babies also have very thin gut lining and if a baby is weaned before the enzymes are present, undigested food could seep through the intestinal lining and enter the blood putting your baby at an increased risk of developing allergies, intolerance’s and other such problems, such as a weaker immune system. After 6 months, babies make there own secretory IgA, which coats the intestine and stops the absorption of foreign substances through the intestinal mucous. Babies also develop the reflex of sucking and chewing simultaneous which will help them taste the food. Babies are born with enough Iron stores to last them until they are roughly 6 months. Weaning at this age can ensure their levels are keep at an optimum. If weaning is delayed until after 7 months some babies have difficulty eating food with lumps later on and they could become deficient in nutrients like iron. If women who are breast feeding have enough iron in their diet then their breast milk will be fine and help ensure that their baby does not develops any deficiencies, as this is coupled with the stores that they are born with. If the mother ensures their diet includes a good source of iron during their pregnancy then the babies will be born with good stores. The problem is that women who don’t eat a good diet and breast feed or breast feed whilst dieting to lose their excess baby weight could increase the possibility of babies suffering from deficiencies. With regards to there being a window for children’s taste buds developing a disliking for bitter green vegetable; I

believe that children are adaptable. If there is a good variety of vegetables, given mixed with sweeter fruits or vegetables their taste buds will adjust, it may take a few weeks to persevere but surely its better to wait until the baby’s digestive system is in full functioning order, reducing the risk of allergies, intolerances and a weakened immune system? What to wean Healthy babies need food that is fresh, unprocessed, and low in saturated fat, and free from additives, sugar and salt. Packaged baby food is improving all the time but fresh and home made has to be the preferred option or the ideal. The following foods are great foods to start weaning: Apple, avocado, bananas, blueberries, broccoli, carrots, courgettes, pears, pumpkin, mango and swede. With the exception of avocados and bananas, its best to cook the fruit and vegetables until it is soft enough to be pureed to a very smooth consistency Make sure they are smooth with no lumps. Never add solids to your baby’s bottle.

Iron forms part of the molecules in red blood cells called haemoglobin, which is responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to each cell, its essential so that each cell can fully function, which can explain why low levels of iron cause tiredness.
