SAVE BELMONT CHILDREN’S FARM! Belmont Children’s Farm has been overwhelmed by the huge amount of public support shown by children, their families and local schools since the farm launched its ‘Save Belmont Children’s Farm’ Campaign recently. Despite a farm being on the site and open to the public for over 100 years, Barnet Council is now claiming that the Children’s Farm needs planning permission. Shane Harrison, Manager of Belmont Children’s Farm, said: ‘We will have around 70,000 visitors this year, yet Barnet Council is choosing to listen to a small handful of

residents. There has been a farm on the site for over 100 years, with facilities for parking and a café. The council are trying to force us into an unnecessary process which will be lengthy, costly and bureaucratic.’ ‘Please show your appreciation for the farm by visiting our website www.belmontfarm.co.uk and registering your support. Meanwhile, until the next round table discussions with the council, the farm is open for business as usual and we are looking forward to our owl and stork eggs hatching very soon.’ Gary Richardson, Chief Executive, The Countryside Foundation for Education & Farms for Schools: ‘I firmly believe that Belmont Children’s Farm is an asset to North London and the surrounding area, allowing children, families and schools to enjoy London’s countryside and to learn about animals and the environment. Seldom have I been so impressed with a project that shows such vision and thought.’ Belmont Children’s Farm is open 7 days a week from 9am – 6pm. For further information see www.belmontfarm.co.uk.

HELP WITH POTTY TRAINING Two entrepreneurial mums have created a unique new product to help with toilet training. Dry Like Me pads fit in a child’s own pants and are designed to capture small accidents, helping children and parents manage the stress and mess of toilet training. Judith Hough and Diane Titterton came up with the discreet pads – perfect for older children who may have accidents or when children start school and need extra confidence – which are cheaper than many other
PARENTS TIRED OF FEELING TIRED! Feeling tired is probably the most common complaint of parents with young children, and tiredness really can affect the stress levels within the family unit. Taking a multi-vitamin, having early nights and improving your general diet are all practical steps towards combating tiredness whilst babies and young children are wakeful at night, but I have recently tried Pharmaton capsules that can help relieve periods of exhaustion and improve physical capacity.

parenting
Where has my little girl gone? Padded bras for sevenyear-olds, dolls dressed in high heels and pole dancing kits for kids. From every angle, our daughters are bombarded by messages about looks and sexuality they are too young to understand. Even primary school girls feel pressured to conform to a thin, ‘sexy’ ideal, leading to self-destructive behaviour, ranging from eating disorders and self-harm to anxiety and low self-esteem. But while girls are fast-tracked though childhood, parents feel drowned out by the internet, retailers, the media and peer pressure. Even though there’s lots of discussion of the problem, so far there’s been nothing for mums and dads on what to do to protect their girls. That’s why parenting author and mum to two young girls Tanith Carey set about interviewing psychologists, experts, teachers and families to find the best way forward for her new book Where Has My Little Girl Gone?. The good news is that she found parents are far from powerless. There really are lots of practical steps you can take today to inoculate our daughters against the worst effects of the X-rated society. Tanith believes that just by becoming
a more aware parent today, you can help protect your daughter against sexualisation. Just the two minutes you take to show your daughter how an image of an ultra-skinny model has been airbrushed, you’ve taught her not to try and live up to an image of perfection that doesn’t exist. The book contains hundreds of practical tips for parents, but here are a selection from the section on how to keep your daughter safer on Facebook: Fight your corner: many parents argue they should leave Facebook to their children because it’s like reading their diary. But Facebook is a public forum – and lapses in judgement quickly escalate into real world problems like bullying and provocative posing. A remark in a diary is private and easily forgotten. An ill-judged post or picture on Facebook is seen by hundreds and can’t easily be removed. Join up: you don’t have to participate but you need to be present to understand Facebook. Certainly at the start, tell your child that one of the conditions of being on there is that she makes you a friend. If she wants to block you, ask why. If it’s because she’s embarrassed by you, offer to go on under another name. Be open about your involvement. It’s essential she maintains trust in you. Explain what a real friend is: tell your daughter that having friends on Facebook is not the same as having real friends. Tell her to only add people if they really know them – and not to accept anyone just because they know people in common.

education news
Eduction news cuts already forcing families to tighten their belts, this increase is making private education less and less affordable. While the economy continues to force many private schools to shut every year and boarding schools are looking more and more to foreign pupils to fill their numbers, private school pupils fell by 786 this year. However, school leaders are insisting that the figures actually show a positive result for the private sector in the face of enormous pressure on family incomes. ‘ISC independent schools are showing remarkable resilience against a difficult economic background, reflecting the high quality of education that our schools offer to parents and the value for money that this represents,’ says David Lyscm, ISC chief executive. He continued to say that the average fee rise was the second lowest since 1994 and showed that independent schools were ‘very sensitive to the needs of parents and doing everything they can to keep fees to a minimum’.
AS FEES RISE, PUPIL NUMBERS DIP FUN FRENCH SUMMER HOLIDAY CLUB Why not try Club Petit Pierrot’s fun and everpopular Summer Holiday Club taking place at St Mark’s Church Hall, Abercorn Place, NW8 in July 2011? There are Parent & Toddler groups for 1 to 3 year olds with fun activities such as songs, dances, sensorial activities, arts & crafts, sand and water play. There are also sessions for 3 to 5 year olds and 6 to 8 year olds with a special holiday programme including arts & crafts, cooking, singing, dancing, language games & role-play. The lessons are entirely in French and the emphasis is always on the children having fun and learning French through play. Club Petit Pierrot has a dynamic team of native French teachers who are passionate about teaching French to young children. Highly recommended by BBC, Daily Telegraph, Daily Express & Time Out. Visit their informative website www.clubpetitpierrot.co.uk or call 020 7385 5565.
Fewer children are being sent to independent schools after average fees have climbed above £13,000 for the first time. According to the Independent Schools Council, the number of children in private education fell this year, dropping for the second year in a row as fees rose faster than earnings increased. Information from the ISC shows the average parent will pay £13,179 in annual fees this year which is a 4.6 per cent increase on last year, and with the economic climate and the Coalition’s

CHANGES TO SEN Special educational needs statements will be replaced with a ‘health and care’ plan – and parents will be given a personal budget to spend on implementing it, under new government proposals. The aim is to give parents whose children have SEN more power over their care – but ministers also believe it will reduce the number of children labelled as having SEN, because they believe too many children are currently given SEN status. The new plans are being piloted from September 2011, and will be introduced nationally next year. www.education.gov.uk/childrenand youngpeople/sen/a0075339/sengreenpaper

Baby’s Here! Who Does What? By Duncan Fisher (GS Press) RRP £8.99 (All the profits go to fund Family Info Ltd)
Duncan Fisher suggests challenging tradition, taking a step back and looking at ways to accommodate both parents. Sharing care, something I think every new parent should look at. He is humorous and points out; the unrealistic ideas prospective parents have, the rut that can so easily develop, and the valid point; ‘If we haven’t been hands-on with the little ones, we are rarely in a good place when it comes to dealing with stroppy teenagers’. So true. He looks at the laws around paid leave and how both parents can work and it’s all laid out in short burst chapters with excellent summing up.
Emotional Healing for the Inner Child (A survivor’s guide to the journey of life) By Anne Cummings (The Book Guild Ltd) RRP £17.99

To coincide with the exhibition Once Upon A Wartime: Classic War Stories for Children, the Imperial War Museum London will host a Children’s Literature Festival during the summer holidays from 13 – 21 August 2011. Join authors and illustrators to take a fresh look at the art of storytelling through a host of fun-packed workshops.
you got the right work/life balance? Anne Cummings takes us through various stages of our lives likening it to a ferry crossing, looking carefully at the beginning and the various calms and turbulences along the way. Initially sceptical about reading her book, it intrigued me. I felt like I was being counselled as I read it, even though at times, I felt slightly overwhelmed by some of her references to different psychology studies.
Stress-Free Parenting in 12 Steps By Christiane Kutik (Floris Books) RRP £7.99
Modern day parenting, with all the pressures of 21st century life, is undoubtedly stressful and I value any book that successfully advises how to avoid the pitfalls that exacerbate the stress levels. This book does so very well, largely because it draws on sound, traditional values with clear roles, rules and respect. Each chapter starts with a familiar challenging scenario; the author then demonstrates how deftly to handle these potentially stressful situations, remembering that the parent should always remain in control. I found this book deeply insightful and the advice, in its simplicity, so helpful and achievable, and I would highly recommend it.

Essential facts on essential fats – the good, bad and the ugly By Nutritionist Kirsten Davies BSc N.T.P B.A.N.T
Essential fats are called so because they truly are essential for optimum health. Fats have been given a bad reputation in the media and this has confused many people and even made some people become fat phobic! However not all fats are made equally. The ugly would be the trans fats. These are hydrogenated and they don’t provide us with any nutrients. Increased levels of trans fats has been shown to increase the risk of heart disease, stroke etc. The bad would be saturated fats. However this too, even classed as bad, still has its functions. Whilst it is not essential to eat saturated fats, a moderate amount is fine to consume. The good would be the lovely essential fats which are also called Omega 3 and Omega 6. Our brains are made up of at least 60% essential fats. Rapid brain development occurs in children between the ages of four months and four years old and again from puberty to around 16, when the number of connections in the brain doubles. So you can see the importance of ensuring your children have a good supply of foods that contain essential
fats. Studies have shown that children with learning disorders such as dyslexia and dyspraxia have lower amounts of A.A, DHA and GLA in their blood plasma and red blood cells. This has led many to believe that a diet rich in essential fatty acids could help children with dyslexia, ADHD and dyspraxia. Essential fatty acids are required for prevention of the development of degenerative diseases such as heart disease, maturity on-set diabetes, arthritis, asthma, skin problems, and obesity and many more conditions. What food we choose to feed our children not only helps them become the best they can possibly be, it could also help protect their health later in life. Low fat foods are not advisable for children under five, as this is a time of rapid growth. Children have a relatively small stomach in comparison to the calories they need for growth, and fats play an important role in helping children meet their nutritional energy requirements necessary for healthy growth.
Good sources of Omega3 are found in oily fish such as mackerel, herring, fresh salmon and tuna, sardines, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, brazil nuts, sesame seeds avocadoes, kale, spinach, organic eggs, ground flaxseeds and flaxseed oil. Good sources of Omega 6 are found in flaxseeds, Corn and sunflower oils, grape seed oil, pumpkin seeds, pine nuts, pistachio nuts, olive oil, olives and chicken to name but a few. Whilst I would recommend that food be the preferred source of essential fats for children, sometimes our diets are less than ideal, so supplementation can be a reliable way of ensuring your children have a good source of EFAs in their diet. There are many flavoured fish oils around that can be pleasant tasting for children who may have a limited diet for whatever reason. Another option would be blended oils e.g. Udos Choice is an omega 3-6-9 oil blend and an organic source of essential fatty acids. You could put a teaspoon in a fresh fruit and yogurt smoothie for children, or mix it in with yogurt. (Omega 9 is not an essential fatty acid as the body can make it when it has adequate amounts of omega 3 and 6)
Our brains are made up of at least 60% essential fats. Rapid brain development occurs in children between the ages of four months and four years old. If you have a question you would like answered on this page please email me on thefoodremedy@yahoo.co.uk. I can only answer a few every month. If you would like a personal consultation regarding you or your child’s diet please contact me on 07780 007361 or on the above email.

Tasty recipes to help you include essential fatty acids in your childs diet: SALMON PASTA WITH CHEESE, PEAS AND LITTLE TREES (BROCCOLI) Salmon Cheese Milk Butter Corn flour Broccoli Peas Pasta
BANANA BREAD 1¼ cups wholemeal self-raising flour ¾ cup ground flaxseed 2 3 cup brown sugar 2 teaspoons baking power 2 eggs ¼ cup skimmed milk ¼ cup canola oil 2 large mashed bananas ½ teaspoon vanilla essence
Place salmon in an oven proof dish and top with a little butter, pepper and a squeeze of fresh lemon. Cook for 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile, boil pasta and steam broccoli and peas. To make the cheese sauce, melt the butter, stir in the flour and cook for one minute. Gradually whisk in the milk, and then continue to stir over a low heat for 3 minutes until the sauce thickens. Take off the heat, stir in the cheese until it’s melted. Flake the salmon, drain the pasta and vegetables, mix all together and add the cheese sauce. Delicious and very nourishing!
Preheat oven to 175°. In large bowl mix the flour, ground flaxseeds, brown sugar and baking powder together. In food processor or bowl, mash bananas. Then add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla, and mix in well together. Slowly add the flour to the banana and egg mixture until it’s all mixed together. Grease 8½ x 4½ 2" loaf pan with butter. Pour batter in loaf pan. Bake for about 50-55 minutes until dark brown, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean. Let cool in the pan on a rack for at least 10-15 minutes before unmoulding to cool completely on the rack.
It is better to use butter as opposed to margarine or any other substitute, as the body recognises butter and knows how to process it more efficiently than margarine or other substitutes. Butter also contains an important fat called butyric acid, which helps maintain a healthy digestive function. Margarine and substitute butter more often than not contain hydrogenated fats know as Trans fats. Trans fats have been linked to high cholesterol, which can lead to health conditions such as heart attacks and strokes.

At 3 courses for £22 it represents excellent value. With an extensive kids’ menu and party packs, the enclosed beer garden, replete with a tree-house, offers beleaguered parents the opportunity to enjoy a relaxed meal and even a drink or two!

Sit on the enchanting wooden verandah to get the best view of this wild wood, or in the cosy simple interior where local artists display their work. The informal atmosphere is very relaxed, allowing you to let the children run around the jungle-walk way, and even tuck any canine companions under the verandah tables. In addition to simple kid friendly lunches, such as penne pasta with pesto or tomato sauce and garlic bread, you can enjoy falafels, ciabattas, wraps and cooked breakfasts and some tasty veggie curries. Great coffees and a lovely chocolate cake that is ever popular with the local families and dog walkers. Cash only though at this place.

Children’s meals include fish fingers and chips for £4, and plenty of other snacks, pastries and sandwiches, not forgetting ice lollies!

Dudley does... Pond Dipping!
Escot Education, growing in leaps and bounds
SPECIAL FEATURE
At Escot Park, Devon, the education department is blossoming and this year we have more than ever to share with you. At Yurt Village and the Greenwood Centre, school children have been enjoying residential and day trips along with a whole host of outdoor education activities. The village allows teachers to relax and enjoy accommodation slightly different to everyone else and gives up to 56 children a nice home-like environment in which to play and learn. We provide delicious home-cooked food, lovely hot showers, comfortable bunk beds, 1100 acres of parkland and a large range of educational activities for everyone to enjoy. Yurt Village is also home to Escot’s holiday programme, Camp Wild. Residential programmes are booking up and we are eagerly anticipating the arrival of a hot
summer. We have a huge array of exciting activities planned for 2011 and if your children join us, they can expect to do some of the following: feed the wild boar, pond dipping, team challenges, falconry, woodland hikes, exploration and games, swamp walking and otter feeds. There will also be forest school activities like shelter building and fire lighting at the Greenwood Centre (run by Forest School Instructor and Education Officer, Alan Bruford) plus the chance to enjoy Escot’s drop slide, maze, campfires, night hikes and hang out at the village with friends. Please visit us at www.escotcampwild. co.uk for more info and to watch our video.
I am always partial to a bit of pond dipping. There are some wonderful species of rotten tennis ball lurking in the depths of London’s waters, and I have collected many over the course of the last few months. But my recent find pleased me very much – a beautiful orange, partially-deflated rugby ball. I trotted around the heath so proudly with that specimen, I can tell you. That’s Retrievers for you though! My master’s children on the other hand, are not quite as sophisticated or athletic in their dipping techniques, their jaws and paws being somewhat awkward in the art of trailing and grabbing. I understand they prefer to use fishing nets, trawling for more delicate fare such as water shrimps, larvae, water scorpions, waterboatmen, waterbeetles, and all manner of green slime. I watch them transfixed as they sift through treasures excitedly. ‘If only they could just reach that large broken branch, tangled up in the rushes over yonder’ I think to myself. Such a marvelous game of catch to be had with that one… Pond dipping can be enjoyed at Camley Street Nature Reserve in Kings Cross throughout the Summer holidays, and at Lee Valley Regional Park amongst other places. www.wildlondon.org/ naturereserves and www.leevalleypark. org.uk
