Family life

Having more fun as a family By Oona Alexander

I was making lunch a while back, being a bit grumpy, when my 16 year old son turned to me and said: ‘You’re a bundle of fun.’ It was in that moment that I realised that I had been neglecting my duty as a mum to have enough fun in my life. On the spot I decided to return to my Friday night online dance classes - and I’m happy to say that my mood these days is much improved! No-one wants to be a grumpy parent and have family life feel like a chore. So, what can we actually do to lift the mood and have more fun at home?

Here are five tips:

Stop trying to be perfect and wanting your kids to be perfect too. We can’t win at the game of trying to be that fictional parent who never gets cross and has perfectly well-behaved children! So instead, get in the habit of forgiving yourself and your kids for being work-in-progress - and notice how your mood improves.

Live and let live. It’s not your job to make your child happy all the time. So, allow them to be grumpy or moody or not to like something. Try to understand and acknowledge their feelings - however unreasonable they may seem to you. This will help your child to calm down and feel better and you’ll have avoided the exhausting business of trying to change the way your child is feeling! Prioritise your own needs. Ask for help, take a

break and be kind to yourself. Why not go for a walk - or sit in a cafe and watch the world go by? Remember, if you don’t do this for yourself, no-one else will. And your family will benefit, too, because, if you’re feeling rested, you’ll be much better at being playful and having a fun time with your children.

Develop your capacity for fun in your life. Pick

up an old hobby or try something new. Meet an old friend or do something you enjoyed as a kid! If you haven’t got a ready answer to the question: ‘What’s fun for you?’, it’s time for some serious work on FUN!

Be playful. Play is your children’s element and they will be eternally grateful to you if you develop a repertoire of playful, positive ways to do the things that need to be done every single day! (See opposite for ideas).

Having more fun with the kids Instead of making your kids tidy up, make it fun, by putting on their favourite track, creating a dancing game, and doing the tidying up together. Create mealtime fun by letting kids serve themselves with serving spoons or little tongs and giving them little jugs to pour their own water. Instead of saying: ‘Right, we need to go and brush your teeth’, say something like: ‘Shall we walk backwards to the bathroom?’ Or ‘shall we hop?’ Tell children stories from your childhood - kids love this! Chores: Put your child’s clothes away with them, and enjoy the time you get to spend with them in that way (instead of expecting them to do it and then being disappointed when they don’t). Get them to do things by talking to parts of their body. So, for example, you might lift up the duvet and say, ‘Hey X’s legs, are you ready to get up?’ If your child is grumpy, lift the mood with some funny noises and silly voices.

Oona Alexander is a parenting expert who helps you radically love your child to happiness and naturally great behaviour, so everyone in the family can have more fun. Download her free guide at www.oonaalexander.co.uk/solvethestruggle

Family life

Grandparents are for Christmas too F or many families in these hectic times, especially where both parents work, being able to call upon other family members to assist with the day to day arrangements for children is key. It is not unusual for both sets of grandparents to be involved in drop-off and pick-up from nursery and school and to be the trusted free babysitters for that precious night out. In many cases, grandparents provide the daily child care for many parents who work. Grandparents are those adults who have lived and read the manual of parenting and who bring a wealth of experience, and importantly love and support, for their grandchildren. They are the ones who seem to have endless patience to play that never ending game of snap or monopoly and who build up a special bond with their grandchildren which is different from the bond that exists between parent and child. When parents are going through the challenges that often arise in separation/ divorce it can be difficult for grandparents and other relatives to continue to be involved in the children’s lives. This may be because one parent perceives one set of grandparents as taking sides or, because the children move out of the area bringing to an end the contact the children previously enjoyed with their grandparents. Special events such as Christmas, which are hectic for families in any case, often become fraught with logistical challenges in trying to make arrangements to ensure that children see both parents over the festivities, not to mention grandparents.

So what can grandparents and parents do? For grandparents, often the best and most difficult advice to follow is to try not to take sides and to blame your child’s ex-partner, while at the time being supportive of your child. When seeing your grandchildren try not to be drawn into conversations where they seek your opinion as to who is at fault but instead try to remain neutral and reassure them that you are always there for them and that they are able to talk to you. Often at the beginning of a separation, both parents will need space. Allow them that but equally make known to both of them that you are there to support the grandchildren and want to continue to be involved in their lives. Grandparents have a unique relationship with their grandchildren, and grandchildren often feel able to confide in a grandparent in a way they might not feel comfortable doing with anyone else.

8 Families Surrey West

For parents, be mindful that for children, separation from grandparents and other relatives who have cherished and loved them may be extremely difficult and not in their best interests. Children may have difficulty in expressing their feelings, especially where they see a parent very distressed. Difficult though it may be, try to maintain contact with your ex partner’s parents, especially where they have been involved with the care of the children. If necessary, agree ground rules such that the discussion should only be about the arrangements for the children to see the grandparents and not about the breakdown of the relationship and any issues there may be between the parents. Try to put aside time at special events for the children to see their grandparents and to continue to involve them in school events such as pantomimes and school plays. Grandparents are often surprised to learn after contact has broken down with their grandchildren that they have no automatic right to see them. In such cases it is necessary for grandparents to apply to the court to be granted permission to bring an application to see their grandchildren. Once the court has granted permission, the court will then consider the application which can take time and be costly, without taking into account the acrimony that court proceedings can cause. For this reason, it is always best to look at other alternative means of resolving issues.

separation. Mediation is a voluntary process to assist separating couples in resolving issues. The mediator is an impartial manager of the process whose role is to provide information and to promote dialogue. Grandparents can use mediation as well. A mediator who is specially trained may be very helpful as in the chaos that a separation can cause, the voice of the child is often not heard. This is not because the parents are ignoring what the children are saying. Often separating parents are so overwhelmed with their own emotions and anxieties that they are not able to fully hear what their children are saying. Grandparents can often provide that stability that children so often need at a time when it is difficult for all family members who are entering a period of uncertainty and change. Contact can take many forms and often where families move away, or grandparents live far away, a phone call or email exchange or facetime is just as important to keep in touch and to provide support.

How Stories Help Children Understand Others

T

By Mimi Nicklin

he world we live in is full of complexities, tumultuous relationships and gaps between us and other people. How do we ensure our children connect with others and fully understand those around them without automatically struggling with the same issues that we are? Studies have shown that from the age of 2 years, children start to show genuine empathy - understanding how other people feel even when they don't feel the same way that they do. So how do we as parents nurture this? The role-modelling that we apply at home is probably the most key way in which we can empower our children to develop the emotional intelligence our world needs. This means showing our children how empathy looks and how we put the feelings and reality of others at the forefront of our actions. Our children will follow our lead. Beyond this, the secret to creating empathy may lie in the books and stories we give our children access to. Bedtime stories. Day-time stories. Life-time stories. However you tell them, storytelling with your children can be an incredibly powerful tool to helping them gain new perspectives and create shared understanding with those around them. Emotional simulation and imagination through storytelling is the foundation of our children's ability to evolve their capacity to empathise and truly understand others. It allows them to make the leap from their own beautifully self-centered world to recognising that others may feel distinctly different to them - and that recognising this is well within their reach and role. Academic research now shows that reading, or being read to, actually changes the neuro pathways in our brain – it quite literally alters the way we process and think. Creating empathy is, of course, not limited to storytelling alone but it’s a proven way to support our children as they grow in a world that has increasingly low empathy.

familiesonline.co.uk

How do Stories Help? Storytelling has been powerful throughout modern civilisation - we have been sharing and learning through this medium for as long as we can record. From drawings on cave walls to the first children’s tales published in books for children in the 1740’s, we have always instinctively known that stories positively impact society. Telling our children stories allows them to rapidly understand people’s emotions and realities, bringing the brains of a generation of our children together. The power of storytelling in building our humanity and society shouldn’t ever be left to a pre-bedtime routine alone. Throughout our children’s lives and education, stories have the power to create deep childhood empathy by: Allowing children to imagine how another sees the world by feeling as the character does; Fostering children's understanding of social behaviours and our ability as humans to work together as part of a group; Breaking down bias and fostering inclusivity. Mimi Nicklin is a globally recognised millennial thought-leader. She is host of the Empathy for Breakfast show, Secrets of The Gap podcast and author of book Softening the Edge.
