A culture lesson at your breakfast table Given the continuing huge demand for places at UK boarding schools from overseas, Bright World Guardianships, a Sussex based company, is predicting yet another increase in the number of students who will be joining schools in the UK in September this year. Bright World Guardianships is a long established Guardianship company charged with offering care to international students in UK boarding schools whose parents are not living here. These bright and brave young students are full boarders at schools but need host family accommodation when schools close for short breaks such as Half terms and exeat weekends. With so many excellent independent schools in the Hereford and Worcester area, it is likely that an increase in demand will be evident here. Hosting international students is a very fulfilling and rewarding role. Bright World do, of course, pay a generous nightly rate to cover expenses for visiting children which can offer a valuable extra income to families. More than this though, hosting a young international student can make their entire experience in the UK a happy one. If you welcome them into your home they will actually look forward to exeats and half terms and it will enhance their overall experience and impression of the UK. Your children will also benefit from the exposure to sharing their home with an international student and will learn about new cultures and countries – think of it as a geography lesson at your breakfast table. So becoming a Bright World host family can not only help pay for that annual holiday but will help to educate your own children to new cultures and at the same time make a young international student’s life so much better. For more information on becoming a host family for Bright World Guardianships, please contact: Lana Foster, Managing Director on lana@brightworld.co.uk www.brightworld.co.uk

Education Painting with Plants Broadwas CE Primary School Gardening Club was delighted to be one of three winners of a prize of £1000 in the ‘Painting with Plants’ competition at the Malvern Spring Gardening Show in May. The competition was set up by broadcaster Chris Beardshaw who attended Broadwas Primary School as a child. The children selected John Singer Sargent’s ‘Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose’ as a theme which they had already learned about and worked on recreating it as a garden. They were fortunate to be able to work with their sponsor, Steve Boffy, on creating the lanterns for the picture. They learned how to build willow frames and covered them with plastic and tissue. Meanwhile dresses were being made according to the design in the painting for the children to wear on the day.

Check our website regularly as we are constantly updating it with lots of local news and information so please visit www.familiesherefordandworcs.co.uk and register.

New opening days and times – Tuesday – Friday 9am – 3pm

During the show, children took it in turns to feature in the picture. They enjoyed talking to visitors and had the opportunity to look at some of the other exhibits. The prize money will be spent on developing an under-used part of the school grounds by creating a ‘Jubilee Garden’ www.broadwas.worcs.sch.uk

Education Keeping Momentum through the Summer This has been one of the busiest times of year for GCSE and A level tutors, but from July onwards things become a little less frantic and it is a good time to begin groundwork for the next academic year and talk to a tutor about working through the summer or booking time for the autumn term. •

For entrance exam students it is a good time to start gentle preparation over the summer for the autumn exams – this saves a mad rush to find a tutor and ineffective, last minute practice.

For those moving from primary to secondary school, it can be helpful to keep up some English and Maths work so you start the new term with confidence and all your skills fresh in your mind.

If you are a year 10 student who has already had a taste of controlled assessments and coursework, now is the time to get a bit of work in on honing your skills and getting to grips with exam technique before the real pressure of year 11 kicks in.

Year 12s... If you have found some of the AS level work tricky – why not get some help over the summer and autumn to boost your confidence and skills before the A2 year begins?

New tutor applications are always welcome as Help Tuition are expanding from Malvern into the rest of Worcestershire and Herefordshire. The list of subjects now includes – English, Maths, French, German, Spanish, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, History, Art, Music – theory and various instrumental. If you require any other subject please do ask. For more information or a chat about how your child or teenager can achieve the very best they can with confidence, telephone 01684 562439 or email kate@helptuition.co.uk. www.helptuition.co.uk With 15 years’ experience under our belt we know just what it takes to run a FUN, ACTION-PACKED and STIMULATING activity camp, welcoming children aged 4-14. We are OFSTED registered and all our staff are CRB cleared. Our programme brings together a balanced mix of Sports and Arts and Crafts, from Clay Modelling and Art Explosion to Grand Prix Karts and Archery, to ensure children are kept active, safe and happy. Whatever their age and interests, we’ve got something for everyone! Book individual days or full weeks, take advantage of the FREE extended hours (8am-6pm) and pay with Childcare vouchers. Take advantage of our Flexi-change option where, with 7 days’ notice and provided you stay within the same season, we give you the opportunity to change the dates you have booked. For more information or to book one of our camps go to our website www.supercamps.co.uk or call Customer Services on 01235 832222.

Nursery pupil Rose makes her own happiness chart

A three year old kindergarten pupil from Holy Trinity International School’s nursery was so taken by her class activity that she decided to record pupil happiness results by making her own clipboard chart. Pupil Rose Leek went around fellow classmates asking if they felt happy, sad or angry, before then collating the results on to her handmade clipboard chart, with the children’s resounding result being ‘happy’! Nursery Assistant, Miss Joanne Potter, stated: “As part of our Early Years personal, social and emotional development activities we’d given the children a chart, asking them to mark how they and their friends felt that day, with all the results added to a final tally chart to show the pupils’ overall happiness levels. “Rose, using her initiative, created a personal class activity chart and proceeded to ask the other nursery children and staff, as well as a visiting parent, how they felt, before finally marking correctly her results on her clipboard. It was wonderful to see her personal confidence, and the concentration and focus she displayed as she completed her survey.” Around 30 children in all took part in the group activity, ranging in age from 3 to 4 years of age. www.holytrinity.co.uk

‘Teach your Monster to Read: First Steps’ www.teachyourmonstertoread.com is a completely free online game to help children learn to read. Peter hopes that the game will support the new drive in schools to re-introduce phonics as the fundamental building block in learning to read.

Slip on shoes for boys and girls are notoriously difficult to fit and are not the best option for school shoes. A child will use their toes in a claw like manner to keep the shoe on.

Laces versus Velcro versus Buckles

Education

suitable length and depth to allow movement of the toes. When fitted a shoe fitter will look to provide approximately 15mm growing room from the length of the longest toe to the tip of the shoe. If a shoe is too long a child will trip.

Over the past 10 years Velcro has started to dominate the children’s shoe market. Without doubt its ease of fastening has many advantages over the traditional buckle or lace up shoe. Whilst personal preference must be considered, many shoe manufacturers do not make buckle fastening shoes and those that do have limited styles on offer. A lace up shoe whilst practical and usually a good option for achieving a suitable fit is not always appropriate for a child who is unable to fasten laces.

How Long Should a School Shoe Last?

A Guide to Buying School Shoes Don’t leave it until last minute to buy school shoes, this period is the busiest time for Children’s Shoe shops. Choose a week day preferably, if you can and be prepared to experience a wait. A good shoe shop should have seating for those busy periods

Cost Children spend the majority of the day at school and in school shoes and whilst it may seem expensive investing in a fitted pair of school shoes it is so important for your child’s foot health. Our feet are one of the hardest working parts of our body and we only have 1 pair!!! They are at their most vulnerable from birth until teenage years and several studies suggest that between 50 and 70% of foot problems in later life have been caused by poorly fitting shoes in childhood.

Second-hand Shoes Are not a good idea, they retain bacteria and have already taken on the shape of their previous wearer. This can result in rubbing and blistering. The shoe will not support the foot in the way that a newly fitted shoe should and may even impede the normal walking pattern of the new owner.

Choosing the Right School Shoe Leather shoes are the product of choice as leather allows the foot to breathe naturally. Did you know a normal pair of feet, produce about a tablespoon of sweat each day? A leather shoe will allow evaporation of some of that perspiration. Man-made plastic materials may be a cheaper option but they don’t mould to the foot in the same way that a leather product will and rather like a rubber glove they increase perspiration, which can result in fungal infections and blistering. An ideal school shoe should fit snugly around the heel and should be held securely to the foot by a strap or laces. There should be Beverly Clough is a qualified shoe fitter and has trained with the Society of Shoe Fitters. She is only one of a handful of shoe fitters working in Children’s Footwear in Gloucestershire. July – August 2012

We all wear shoes very differently. If your child is particularly hard on shoes, choose a shoe that has a scuff resistant toe. No one style of shoe has been constructed to meet all of your child’s needs. School shoes no matter how well constructed were never designed to be the brake for the bike or scooter or the budding footballers football boots. Shoes will wear according to what children put them through. Whilst we all would like to see a pair of school shoes last a year in reality this is not the case, even if the shoe remains in good condition it is highly unlikely that a child’s foot will stay the same size and depth for a whole year!!!

Blistering or Rubbing Back to school means going back to wearing properly constructed footwear. If your child has been in flip flops, crocs, sandals or trainers over the Summer Holidays their feet will have become a little flaccid. Going back to constructed footwear may feel a little strange for them and often children will not initially like the sensation of the more structured shoe. It is a good idea for them to wear the new shoes with socks on for short bursts of time at home before they return to school. Even with a good fitting shoe rubbing can occur, particularly around the heel. If the shoes continue to rub however and are uncomfortable, return them with your receipt to the shop you purchased them from.

Foot Growth Rate Babies feet grow at the fastest rate. The Society of Shoe fitters suggest that an infant’s foot can grow at a rate of about 2 ½ sizes a year. As the child grows older this can change to approximately 2 sizes and by the time a child is 5 the average growth rate is approximately ½ -1 size per year. This is however very much a guide. Children’s growth rates are sporadic and a child whose feet have not grown in some time can have a real growth spurt. The good news is that in general by the age of 10 the rate of foot growth decreases further to an average of less than 1 size per year. A shoe fitter is always happy to check the fit of your child’s shoe. It does not necessarily mean that they will need a new pair and a qualified shoe fitter will not sell a pair of shoes unless needed. As a guide Children’s shoes should be checked for size every: 4-6 weeks 0-3 years 6-8 weeks 3-4 years 10-12 weeks 5 years and older (Society of Shoe Fitters) She owns and runs Sheep Street, Stow on the Wold, Gloucestershire GL54 1AA

is going to be all about active fun (it is the Olympics, after all) and getting out and about in the UK (which is, for all of us cash-strapped families, a lot cheaper than going abroad). So what are the best activities to enjoy en famille? Joanna Moorhead investigates

Climb the rocks Clim Roc Rock-climbing is apparently one of the fastest-growing sports in Britain, and giving it a try makes for a great family day out. Like Br all the best family challenges it’s about supporting one another, al learning new skills, encouraging people when they need it, and le ccelebrating new-found abilities and courage! Family climbing courses abound and most are for complete beginners and take co children from about eight (although some specialise in working ch with younger children). Look for a course where you have a dedicated instructor: you’ll learn (amongst other things) how to dedic belay (ie hold the ropes safely) and how to make the most of the rock’s k’ features for your hands and feet. If you’re looking for a family challenge in a rainy period, contact one of the local places listed below and see if you can hire an instructor for a family session.

2. Swing S wing through the forest

A tree-top adventure makes for an adrenalin-charged day out with the children – and while you’re up there, you get some brilliant views as well! Personally, I’ve never been so happy to be back on solid ground as when I got down from the terrifying heights of the forest course I tried out with my kids...but on the upside, at least I did make it down, and relying on them to help me through the most white-knuckle parts of the course went a long way in terms of family bonding! Until recently Go Ape! has been restricted to over-10s, but there’s now a new course at two of the company’s 27 centres nationwide – Thetford near Brandon, and Moors Valley Country Park near Bournemouth. It’s designed for children as young as four, although they also need to be at least a metre tall, and it’s an hour-long course which, like the over-10s Go Ape! courses, takes children (and their parents) through a network of looping obstacles five metres above the forest floor, including the spider’s web, log balance and jungle crossing, before finishing on a tree-to-tree zipwire. Prices: Go Ape! costs £30 for adults, £20 for 10-17 year olds. The new junior course costs £15 for any age. Alternatively, if you are holidaying at home this summer then we have several steam railways right on our doorstep. For more information on the lines mentioned here see www.bluebell-railway.co.uk and www.embsayboltonabbeyrailway.org.uk or see www.steamrailwaylines.co.uk for the lines across the UK. For local stations visit www.svr.co.uk, www.perrygrove.co.uk, www.deanforestrailway.co.uk and www.gwsr.com. om.

Take an underground walk There’s something strangely thrilling about taking a walk through a cave, into the very inside of the earth – the atmosphere is quite different from anywhere else you’ll ever go,and the memories of what you see and experience stay with you for a long time. And, of course, every child needs to o understand the difference between those stalactites and stalagmites. Some of the best caves in the country are at Cheddar Gorge in Somerset, the White Scar Cave at Ingleton in Yorkshire, where you can take an 80-minute tour through some of the country’s most awesome subterranean rock formations, and Wookey Hole near Wells in Somerset, home (apparently) to the Witch of Wookey. Not suitable, though, for a buggy or a wheelchair.

4.

Tickets from around £15 for adults, £10 for children, depending on how extensive the caves are and how much else there is to do at the attraction. For more information on the caves mentioned here see www.whitescarcave.co.uk; www.cheddargorge.co.uk; www.wookey.co.uk

Summer Activities

Fly a kite

Every family has a kite or three, usually given as birthday or Christmas presents and with fiendishly difficult-looking instructions. We sometimes thought about taking our children to fly them, but something always held us back – usually doubts about how to do it, and whether the area we were planning to kite-fly in n was actually big enough. But a lesson from Kevin n Baker of Southern Breeze, a kite-flying operation on based at Baiter Park on Poole harbour, set us straight: Kevin showed us how to make sure we were in a suitable kite-flying area (you need to use your thumb to check the height of the surrounding obstacles, to make sure they’re far enough away), and you need to give the kite a forceful yankk to get it into the sky. More adventurous families can progress to kitebuggying and kite-boarding, in which you use the power of an airborne kite to propel yourself along on a vehicle on the ground.

5.

Kite-flying tuition costs around £50 for a half-day’s family tuition. For more information on Kevin Baker see www.sbkites.co.uk.

Go mountainbiking G

L a lot of city families we have a Like hhouseful of bikes, but we tend not to do anything more adventurous than go d tto friends’ houses or the local shops on them. Mountain biking is a whole o different experience from a short trip d down the road: we went to try it on d tthe South Downs, where the gentle ((and not-so-gentle) inclines make for greatt off-road You don’t, of course, have to ff d cycling li adventures. d use an instructor to get to grips with mountain biking: but if you’re taking kids with you, and you want to get a real thrill out of your day (plus you won’t need to get the bikes there, because the instructor will provide them) then I recommend a course. Our teacher, Richard, gave us lots of confidence to try out manoeuvres we’d never otherwise have tried (cycling over logs, for example – and yes, it’s a lot scarier than it looks when you’re in the saddle!). He also revealed the number one rule of mountain biking, which is never look down. You have to look straight ahead, focusing on the furthest point of the trail, because if you look down you’ll change your centre of gravity and fall off. We loved our day learning to mountain bike: the children (who need to be over about seven) were a lot better than the parents, but even the parents managed things they’d never have believed they could do! Expect to pay around £40 per person for mountain biking tuition, including bike hire. For m more information on the Surrey Hills tours tou see www.allbikedup.com; for details of courses near you see www.abc-of-mountainbiking.com. w

Try potholing T

Pot Potholing has a scary reputation, and it’s not for the fainthearted (or those with claustrophobia) fa but if you’re you a brave clan and up for an adventure, it can be an extraordinary experience to journey into the underworld dressed in what resembles miner’s gear, and to edge your way through spaces you didn’t believe you’d ever fit through. Coming across underground chambers is magical – as is seeing the daylight come back into view when you finally make your way out! Potholing with an instructor costs around £40 per person for a session. For information on where to find an instructor, see www.caving.uk.com. July – August 2012

FFind a geocache Geocaching is one of those things that sounds totally G pe erplex to anyone who’s never tried it, but is a perplexing huge hit with almost everyone who has. The idea is tto find some ‘treasure’ – treasure that’s hidden in a box, and is findable using a hand-held satnav system (any will do). The treasure in question sy usually consists of a plastic box like a lunchbox u with a whole host of miscellaneous bits and w pieces in it – things like small toys, CDs, pens, pie anything. The rule is that anyt hat when yyou find your treasure you’re allowed to take one thing out, and you must put one thing in – and sign the log book of course. The treasure is hidden everywhere and anywhere – in cities, in the countryside, even underwater.

Go canoeing

Canoeing centres up and down the country offer equipment hire and instruction for families who want to dip their toes in the water. Your instructor will help you learn how to paddle, how to turn and how to negotiate rapids – and he or she will also ensure that you’re canoeing in a suitable place, and in suitable weather, for the age of your children (which is crucial, because accidents can happen quickly in canoes). What’s especially lovely about canoeing is that, as well as the skills to learn, you can also have a day out that’s close to wildlife – look out for fish, water birds and dragonflies. If you’re lucky you might even spot an otter or a water vole. Hiring a canoe and instructor costs around £150 for half a day. For more information see www.canoe-england.org.uk/ go-canoeing/ or for local companies www.wyevalleycanoes.co.uk , www.canoehire.co.uk www.thecanoehire. e. co.uk and www.canoehire.com.

Get into metal detection

10.

There’s something almost absurdly exciting about setting off with a metal detector and seeing what you’re going to turn up – even though it will, in all probability, be complete rubbish. Because there’s always that chance of finding treasure – or even, and this is almost as good, remnants of the way other people lived, in another age. To use a metal detector effectively, you need to use a sweeping motion – and it’s best to go somewhere with plenty of space, perhaps where other interesting finds have been made. Children are just thrilled with the idea of a machine that goes bleep the whole time, and which might lead to some discovery. Another big plus is that this is an adventure anyone can enjoy – great for families with small kids in buggies or anyone in a wheelchair (though you need to chose your terrain wisely). Summer Clubs

Summer camps explained… So you are thinking a camp might be a great way to keep the kids busy over the long summer break... but what are the differences and how do you know which one to choose? Let us break it down for you...

Residential or Day Camp? Residential Camps are holidays where your child can stay during the holiday course, often further away from your home and sometimes including activities not available locally. Day Camps are holidays at a local venue where you can take your child on a daily basis. Times may vary but they are usually around 8.30am – 4pm with additional costs for early starts and later finishes.

What type of Camp would suit your child? Multi activity holidays offer a selection of different activities every day, usually including a range of sports, creative or adventure activities – ideal for the child who does not want to attend a specialist course in a single activity. Sports Coaching holidays offer specialist courses in a single activity such as football, basketball, tennis, cricket or golf. Outdoor adventure holidays may involve one or more challenging activities such as abseiling, climbing, orienteering or zip wire. Centres offering this type of course may also offer watersports. Creative arts holiday courses may involve arts & crafts, pottery, sculpture, etc. Performing arts holiday courses may offer specialist or multi activity courses in activities such as dance, drama, mime, singing or behind the scenes stagecraft. Computer / Technology courses may be specialist courses or part of a multi activity programme including activities such as computer games, web design, programming, design and technical production skills. Horse riding holiday courses are available at specialist riding centres offering full or half day courses in riding and stable management. Watersports centres offer holiday courses in single activities such as canoeing, kayaking, sailing or windsurfing as well as multi watersports courses offering taster sessions in a range of activities.

What location is best for you and your child? Most camps offer a variety of locations. Check our listing in this issue and see our website www.familiesherefordandworcs.co.uk for a selection of camps.

What age group would be best? Do you want your child mixing with a variety of ages? Would you prefer they were all roughly the same age? Check with the camp provider to see how the children attending are grouped – by age? by ability? by interest? Lastly always see if you can talk to other kids and parents who have been on the camp, as always, the best form of testimonial is from those who have done it before you!.... 12
