Editor’s Letter As I am writing this in mid August the weather is shocking and I really don’t hold out much hope that it will change. I have a feeling though that it will be sunny and warm as soon as the children go back to school. I hope you have had a lovely summer holiday despite the weather and found plenty of things to do with the children. My 5 year old son has completed a whole year of school (where did that year go?) and is going into Year 1 now and both my daughters are in their last year of GCSEs and A Levels. For those of you with older children on page 13 we have an article on the transition from primary/middle to secondary school which can be a worrying time for parents and children alike. We also have a selection of clubs and classes on pages 14-19 to find something that your child will enjoy. Don’t forget to book your pantomime tickets early and why not try the children’s ghost walk round Worcester as the nights draw in? We went on the historic ghost walk last year – great fun, learnt loads of local historical facts and enjoyed a glass of mulled wine at the end. If you would like to advertise in the Nov/Dec issue and reach 42,000 parents then call me on 01386 791422 or email editor@familiesherefordandworcs.co.uk. Copy deadline is Friday 12th October. News & Views Families Editor presents The Robin Mayne Memorial Trophy In July I had great pleasure in attending the 12th annual Audlem Festival of Transport in Cheshire where I grew up. Over 300 vintage cars, vans, trucks, buses and motorbikes joined the parade through the village to end up parked on the playing fields for public display. This is a very special event for my family as we get to present the Robin Mayne Memorial Trophy (in memory of my father who was passionate about motorbikes) at the Festival each year to the most interesting motorcycle and rider. This year the trophy was awarded to Russ Gott with his 1961 Norton Dominator 88 Supersport 500cc Cafe Racer which he renovated and plans to race in the near future. Russ amazingly became a father for the first time at the age of 50 and this is what he had to say: “It was a very proud moment for me to win as it has been difficult to pinch time over the last 18 months and bring up a newborn baby. I have to say a big thank you to my partner who has also made sacrifices to allow me time to build the bike. Both the bike and myself are 51 and a half years old so recently I was celebrating a centenary of bike and owner. It was at the same time I celebrated the birth of my first and only child, and, as this was quite a major milestone in my life, I named the bike Lady Grace Sophia after my daughter”. For all those parents and children who love wheels, speaking as a Mum with a 5 year old boy, the Festival of Transport is well worth a visit next year. Education St Mary’s buck national trend and records best A level results It was celebrations all round at St Mary’s Worcester this summer when students achieved the school’s best A-level results in eight years. 100% of students passed their A-levels with grades A* to C with 95% of grades at A* to B. Whilst nationally the percentage of A* to A results dipped, St Mary’s enjoyed an increase with an impressive 70% of grades at A* or A. In 2011 this figure was 40%.

Commenting on the results, Headmistress, Mrs Catherine Jawaheer said: “I am of course delighted that the excellent teaching and learning environment that we create here at St Mary’s has been recognised with the school’s best results for some years. But I am even more thrilled for our girls. Their hard work and commitment to their studies has brought them the grades they so richly deserve and they now stand poised to take up a place in the University of their Choice and pursue their chosen paths with confidence. “Many of the girls who have gained these outstanding results have been with us since Reception class or before in our Stables nursery! Their achievements are therefore the result of the key foundations and love of learning instilled in our Preparatory School. From the moment a girl starts in our Reception class they are encouraged to see themselves going places. Their natural curiosity is developed, supported and challenged and each child’s unique gifts nurtured so they can achieve their potential.” For more information on how your daughter could benefit from a St Mary’s education call 01905 357786 or visit stmarys.org.uk.

Pupils from Norton-JuxtaKempsey CE First School in Littleworth flew the flag for the Olympics with their World Sports Day on Monday 25 June. The event, which was attended by Worcester Warriors’ Andy Goode, saw pupils held their own version of the torch relay, followed by an athletics parade.

Photograph: (back) Cecil Duckworth and Andy Goode, Worcester Warriors, with (front) Laura Cole and Sam Morgan

The torch relay was formed of pupils who had been picked for the task in recognition of different achievements, as well as pupils who had won competitions held in the school to design a stamp and an Olympic ring. Each class had been designated a different country and for World Sport Day, each was dressed in a colour for that country’s flag. Head Teacher Julia Dean commented: “The children are so excited about the Olympics, and many went to watch the real Olympic torch when it passed through Worcester, so re-creating it at our World Sports Day now makes it even more meaningful. The entire school has learned a Mascot Dance and they performed it beautifully. It was an extra bonus to have Andy Goode here joining in the celebrations. All in all, it’s been a superb occasion for the children, and has reinforced all the work they are doing learning about the Olympics in lots of fun and interesting ways.” For further information on Norton juxta Kempsey CE First School, please visit www.njkfirst.ik.org

Editor’s visit to The Downs Malvern Prep School I was very kindly invited to visit The Downs in Malvern back in the Spring of this year. The Downs is set on a rural 55 acre campus in Colwall and is a busy, vibrant and successful co-educational preparatory school for boarding and day children aged between 3 and 13 years. I arrived at lunch time to be greeted by Mr Alastair Cook, the Headmaster, and was duly taken to the dining hall for lunch. I was struck immediately by the wonderful rapport between the children and staff. The children were exceptionally well behaved and were most polite and attentive towards other students and teachers alike. It has always been the school’s resolution “that the children who attend the school should develop confidence in thought, eloquence in expression, sincerity in feeling and honesty in endeavour. There is so much to be learned, so much that can be accomplished, and it is our delight that we can strive to ensure that each pupil fulfils his or her own individual promise.” The school is set in a beautiful location in a valley between the wooded slopes of the Malvern Hills, close to all the local amenities that the lovely spa town of Malvern offers, and is the home of the oldest privately owned light railway in the world. Unfortunately the railway wasn’t running when I visited so I didn’t have the opportunity to see it in action but the trains have supplemented the Early Years transport topic work; steam has been the theme for national science week and their artists have been inspired to produce a Railway Calendar with railway inspired paintings, drawings and even a cross stitch as illustrations. September – October 2012

I was taken on a tour of the school by several charming young ladies to see the recently refurbished accommodation as well as the classrooms and sporting facilities. It is quite evident that there has recently been significant investment in enhancing facilities ie a new sports hall, AstroTurf hockey pitch, tennis and netball courts as much emphasis is placed on the outdoor curriculum, enabling pupils to make the most of the wonderful country campus as well as focusing on an academic education. All in all, The Downs Malvern is a very special school indeed.

Bromsgrove School is ancient, but its golden age is now

cafe for parents and pupils. The new residential accommodation gives weekly boarding options for local pupils aged 7 to 18. So, for those who might find the School run just a little too much, some of Britain’s finest boarding facilities are on hand to help.

After over 450 years of being a successful but relatively small School, Bromsgrove has, in the last few years, become one of Britain’s largest independents with 1,600 day and boarding pupils aged 2 to 18. That growth in pupil numbers has now been wedded to a build programme of titanic scope. The passion, vision and flair that transformed the School intellectually, culturally and on the games fields is now manifest in Bromsgrove’s latest facilities.

Despite the grandeur of all these developments to the physical site, Bromsgrove remains driven by values. Knock all those wonderful buildings down and the essence remains: we are committed to nurturing moral young people who make a difference for the better. OFSTED continues to rate Prep and Senior School “Outstanding” and The Good Schools Guide says Bromsgrove “inhabits the academic stratosphere.” But it also says Bromsgrove pupils are “refreshingly free from false sophistication.” We like that last comment.

Nursery News Two ‘outstanding’ nursery schools have reacted to parents’ requests by accepting even younger children. RGS Worcester is delighted to announce that its two nurseries are taking children from 2 years of age from September 2012, rather than 2.1/2 years as was previously the case.

The two schools are: RGS Springfield, which is based in Britannia Square in the heart of Worcester and RGS The Grange, which occupies a splendid position in Claines. Independent verification from the key external organisations, ECERS (Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale), ISI (the Independent Schools Inspectorate) and Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills) at their most recent inspections show both schools’ nurseries in the very best of lights. Springfield received the highest possible Grade 1 mark in all 17 of the areas assessed, whilst The Grange’s ISI report described the nursery as ‘outstanding’, once again the highest grading available. “Dedicated staff in both our nurseries have created the perfect early years environment,” said Head of RGS Andy Rattue. “We had been asked many times to take slightly younger children, so it is very exciting that we are now in a position to welcome parents with two year olds.” Because these reports are carried out by objective and impartial assessors, parents are assured about the quality standards set by the schools. However, Andy Rattue is keen to stress another key indicator that sets the schools apart: “It is extraordinary how many parents walk through the door to the nursery, pre-prep or prep at The Grange and Springfield and they just know it is the right place for them. The atmosphere feels vibrant, caring and all-inclusive. “My advice to parents is ‘…come and visit!’” Experience the RGS Prep Schools for yourself at the next open days on the 6th and 13th October 2012.

This is what a local mum from Malvern had to say about Families “a great read and packed with ideas for summer activities – it was great to sit and digest over a cuppa this evening!”

K King’s St. Alban’s in Worcester welcomes a new Headteacher B Being appointed Head of King’s St Alban’s in K Worcester, represents W ssomething of a hhomecoming for Ian Griffin who starts in his new role w was born in Worcestershire this September. Mr Griffin w and despite teaching in many different parts of the country, he has often returned here to visit friends and relatives. He is very excited to be moving to Worcester with his wife Edwina and their three-year-old daughter Hannah. “King’s St Alban’s is a wonderful school and we are all certainly looking forward to living in the city. I am delighted to have been appointed as the new Head and I am very much looking forward to joining the school in September. In all my visits, I have been struck by the warmth of welcome from both children and staff and been most impressed by the standards achieved. King’s St. Alban’s clearly deserved its excellent recent inspection report”. For the past four years Mr Griffin has been Head of The Old School, Henstead which is a rural Prep School on the Norfolk/ Suffolk border. With its welcoming, family atmosphere, it has much in common with King’s St. Alban’s. Before this, he was Deputy Head of Westminster Abbey Choir School and thus it is with much delight that he returns to a school with such strong links to a cathedral foundation. He was a chorister down the road at Tewkesbury Abbey and an adult member of the choir both there and at Lincoln Cathedral. 10

www.familiesherefordandworcs.co.uk

Though music is perhaps his first passion, both rugby and cricket come a very close second, so he hopes that he will find some time to be a regular at both New Road and Sixways. For Mr Griffin, it was King’s St. Alban’s proud record of excellence, growth and development that attracted him to the post, along with the opportunity of working with such a prestigious senior school. Mr Griffin is certainly very much looking forward to taking up the reins and building on the progress that has been made under the previous Head, Richard Bellfield.

Making the transition to Secondary School

How much to Help and How Much to Let Go Margaret Ansell has supported large numbers of children and parents through this transition and this is what she has learnt. The transition from Primary to Secondary School is an anxious time for parents. During the primary school years, it is fairly easy to support your child at school. You will probably know his teacher, other members of staff and parents, as well as being familiar with school policies and routines. The thought of losing the control this familiarity offers is as daunting for parents as it is for children and you may well wonder how best to continue to support your child. You may also worry specifically about your child’s ability to cope with the new environment and crucially, whether he or she will make friends. Your anxieties may be eased by adopting strategies that help with the transition. Here are some tips and tools which should help you prepare for and manage the early months:

Before the transition: 1. Shield your child from your anxiety. They can make this transition. Critically, they need to know that you believe in them and their ability to deal with difficulties and challenges. 2. Relax the organisation. Towards the end of year 6, step back from the organisation of your child’s school life eg packing school bags etc. You may secretly want to savour these last few months of dependency but your child needs a taste of independence. If they are slow to take up the reins, don’t take over and don’t despair, they will get there eventually. 3. If your child will walk to school or travel independently on public transport, practise the new journey. Start by travelling together but without interaction. Then move to simply following behind your child. Finally, let him do it alone and meet him there. Travel at busy times. Allow your child to make mistakes and find solutions. This equips them with the skills to handle the unexpected like bus detours and road closures. September – October 2012

After the transition: 1. Be There. Make sure a parent or trusted carer is available before and after school -to provide food, notice if your child comes in late, listen to their successes and concerns and be aware of subtle changes in mood; someone to empathise and with whom to discuss problems. Watch and listen, help out if asked but don’t take over. Become an Enabler rather than a Fixer. 2. Support the development of friendships. It is of great importance to older children that they mix socially and establish secure friendships and they need to do this whilst still young enough to turn to you for support when they make mistakes. Gradually they will learn to make informed choices about friends. It’s appropriate for this age group to have access to a basic mobile phone and computer but the dangers of social networking should be discussed and boundaries agreed upon. 3. Support organisation and routines. Create “To Do Lists” or “Timetables” for the fridge, agree places to keep bags, kit, and books. Label uniform and valuables. Establish routines so they can get to school punctually. Don’t expect too much too soon, many won’t crack this for years! 4. Understand what homework they have and know when it has been completed and handed in. Agree a routine that will help your child to complete and hand in all homework on time, without devoting too much time to one piece and little or nothing to others. However, remember it is their homework not yours; help, encourage, motivate but accept their best. 5. Schedule time to relax. Your child will be exhausted by the effort of holding it all together. Tears are likely over the most trivial things and they may regress and demand more care. Trust that they can cope and make sure there is time for sleep, friends, homework, more sleep, watching TV, playing computer games and yet more sleep! Avoid weekend breaks and reduce extra-curricular commitments to the minimum. Now is not the time for your child to begin new activities or classes. And lastly, schedule time to relax yourself! All will eventually be well. www.familiesherefordandworcs.co.uk

As the new school year starts, so does the time to choose after-school activities, but take a quick look and you will find a whole range of classes available, from Scouts to Ballet, from French to Karate. How can we know which ones are the best for our child, offer value for money, and critically, which ones they will enjoy! After-school activities definitely offer value to your children. Reports indicate those who participate in after-school programs have better school attendance, higher grades and loftier aspirations. They’re less likely to get into trouble and are at lower risk of obesity. It is also a great opportunity for children to develop social and leadership skills. Clubs and Classes Talk to your child and find out how they feel about the activity, and let them choose at least one club or activity themselves. Help them choose activities that reflect who they are and what they want to learn, don’t impose your preferences. Explain that it’s important and fun to try new things, and remember switching activities is normal amongst children. Always check out the quality of an activity. Discipline-based activities that create a quality product over a period of time are great, e.g. putting on a play. Don’t think that high cost equal high quality, some activities are cheaper to run like football. Staff members should be professionals with skills and experience.

Children are a pleasure to see at a Wedding or social event, but they have limited patience and no volume controls! Our friendly team of highly experienced and qualified Nannies can entertain your children with an assortment of equipment including fancy dress, toys and mess free arts and crafts. You can relax and enjoy yourselves while they have their own party. Contact Sarah to discuss your tailor made requirements.

Consider the mix of activities. The benefits of exercise are huge, so including a sport would be a good start. Extracurricular activities are ideal for children to explore and practice what it means to be a group leader, e.g. Brownies. If you are stuck between two similar activities, consider the usefulness, e.g. drum lessons might be cool, but the guitar might have wider applicability. Finally, remember logistics. The afterschool programme affects you too. Avoid signing on to too many activities that leave you scrambling from one to the next. No one will have fun doing anything if it means arriving late, leaving early, and going without dinner on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Look hard for places you can walk to, it reduces your carbon footprint while keeping you fit for free! Finally do build in some downtime. Children need to have independent play as well as the structured activities, so ensure time is built in for dinner, watching T.V. and relaxing. Leave some activities perhaps for the summer, when different interests can be tried, without the pressure of school demands. After-school activities can provide enrichment, adventure and variety. They can enhance knowledge and build character. Spend a bit more time choosing the right activity programme for your child and you will reap the benefits.

Consideration for special needs children ■ Consider your child’s interests, rather than their

needs. Many regular activities can use technology or planning to help their participation, e.g. drama, athletics, cooking, academic Evaluate your child’s stamina. Check they have the energy for an extracurricular activity? ■ Talk with the activity leaders about your child’s

unique medical and communication needs. Provide them with emergency contact information. ■ Make sure family downtime is a regular part of the

schedule. Sometimes your family needs to have nothing to do — as a group. ■ Remember the inclusion of children with special

needs is beneficial to all. Special needs children achieve more, improve behaviour, and enhance motivation. Children without special needs learn from working cooperatively and grow in confidence through helping others. September – October 2012

Finding balance for busy families As parents we want our children to take advantage of opportunities and have enriching experiences, whilst keeping on top of our own demands and duties. So it’s no surprise that families can often find themselves over-committing and running from one activity to another. A over-busy schedule impacts on us all. Parents feel pressured to maximize every opportunity for their children, and with less family time relationships can suffer. Too much structured activity can contribute to anxiety, stress, and even depression in children. Finding a balanced lifestyle is key. There are several signs of an overly busy family. Children become tired, overwhelmed and irritable as a result of no downtime, activities are being done out of habit or because everyone else is, or your children spend so much time in activities that you don’t know what else is going on in their lives. Back-to-school makes you think back-to-stress! If your family is overscheduled, ease the pressure by simplifying the daily routine. This is achievable in two ways – cutting back on extracurricular activities, and getting more organized. Scale down extracurricular activities. Limit the number of activities you have in a week to one artistic, one athletic, and one social for example. Focus more on creating a manageable family schedule.

By Elisabeth Dolton

Finding a Bala nce – Top Tips for parents:

After dinner, lay out breakfast, make lunches and gather everything needed for tomorrow’s activities. Have your children lay out their clothes before going to bed. Once you create some organisation in the house, it’s likely to spread. But almost contradictorily, let go of the idea of being a perfect parent and resist feeling guilty if the house is less than immaculate. Take a few minutes to relax after getting home; don’t immediately dive into meal preparation.

✓ Listen to your children . If they appear fatigued, irritabl e or overwhelm ed they may be over-scheduled . ✓ Talk to yo ur children. Fi nd out which activities they love and which they coul d live without. ✓ Ask yours elf: “Does my ch ild want to be invo lved in all these activities, or do I want them to be?” Your best inte ntions may be adding to the pr essure ✓ Don’t forg et ‘me time’. Don’t sacrifice your ow n wellbeing. Find time to rechar ge and rejuvena te.

Consideration for special needs ds children ■ The balancing act of keeping a busy family with special needs on track through school, therapy, doctor visits, and fun can be tough. ■ Focus on priorities, exploit resources for planning, and continually communicate as a family. ■ Provide a structured lifestyle – everyone benefits psychologically from predictability. Planning family schedules together goes a long way towards reinforcing disability independence. ■ Implement effective routines – getting dressed, loading the car, and eating meals can take substantially more time for children with disabilities. ■ Integrate flexibility into family schedules that allow opportunities to practice disability independence – children can learn valuable benefits of teamwork and planning ahead to meet their goals. ■ Keep supplies handy. Portable containers for equipment and medications enable smooth transitions to the car and back for instance. ■ With flexible diligence, parents of children with disabilities can lead families to a fulfilling and well-balanced life, where disability activities are just part of a reliable, reassuring family pattern

As you cut down on outside activities, set aside dedicated time for the family to be together. If you feel it’s important to eat dinner together a few nights a week, or have a set time when you and your children can just chat, arrange the schedule to make it happen. Reserve time to play and hang out. Streamline household routines to make time at home more relaxed. Keep spaces that you use every day, like the kitchen counter, free of clutter. Keep things where you use them. September – October 2012

Hallowe’en Christian or Celtic?

By Gabrielle Starkey

Halloween is a mysterious holiday, which befits a time when the veil between life and death is said to be thin, allowing spirits to roam the earth. It is actually an ancient mishmash of Celtic and Christian traditions, because the Christian All Saints’ Day (known by Catholics as All Hallows) and All Souls’ Day (together, a festival of prayers for the dead) are celebrated on the traditional Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced Sawin), which means “summer’s end”. This harvest festival was a gathering of the clans, and a preparation for the dark times of winter ahead. Over hundreds of years, the rituals of both festivals have become fused together – but do you know which aspect of Halloween comes from which tradition?

Christianity

Hallowe’en is a shortening of All Hallow’s Eve, or the night before All Hallows (All Saints) Day.

Carving pumpkins Celtic

Originally, turnip lanterns were carved with scary faces at Samhain to ward off evil spirits, and an Irish story tells of Stingy Jack, who tricked the Devil and ended up as a spirit roaming the Earth with a carved-out turnip lamp – the original Jack’o’lantern. When the Irish and Scots moved in great numbers to America, they found that pumpkins were much bigger and easier to carve, and the tradition moved to pumpkins.

Apple bobbing TTrying to take an apple out of water with your Celtic teeth was a traditional game for Samhain, using seasonal fruit. Apples and nuts were also traditionally used in divination rituals, most often to find out a person’s future spouse, or whether a couple would stay together.

Trick or treating Christianity

– specifically Catholicism. All Saints’ Day and the day after it, All Souls’ Day, are times for Christians to pray for the dead who have gone to Heaven or (for Catholics) those being held in Purgatory – each prayer for a soul in Purgatory lifts them closer to Heaven. Trick or treating is believed to have developed from the tradition of “souling”, whereby poor folk went from door to door asking for food in exchange for prayers for the householder’s ancestors. Christmas carol singing is a similar tradition.

Scary stories A clan gathering was a great time for storytelling as, in the times before books, family stories and folklore were passed on by word of mouth. At Samhain, the celebration of the final harvest, stories of the ancestors were told and the dead were celebrated. Like many of the Greek myths, these stories involved heroes being sent on quests, often into other worlds peopled by spirits and demons. Samhain is also used as the setting of many Celtic adventures – with all the tribal elders gathered together, it was the perfect place to set a story.

Many people feel uncomfortable with children knocking at their doors, wearing masks and making mischievous threats. Lessen the chances of upsetting your neighbours with these tips: ◆ Hold a Halloween party in your back garden or go to someone else’s ◆ Dress the kids up in the day, rather than the night ◆ Take them to an attraction n offering ffe ng Halloween-themed events vents

Dressing up Celtic

Going door to door in disguise comes from the Scottish tradition of “guising”, or dressing up to confuse or placate evil spirits.

Bonfires Bonfires are very significant at Samhain as they represent the light and warmth of the dying sun, and purification. With the meat being stored for the winter, clan members were said to throw the bones of the animal into the fire. With the bonfire lit, each family put out their home fire and then ritually relit their hearth using a flame from the bonfire, as a symbol of togetherness. Sometimes two bonfires were lit side by side, and the people would walk between the fires, often with their animals, in a purification ritual.
