Next issue: May/Jun 2013, Editorial and booking deadline: Friday 5th April 2013
Dear readers Welcome to our special Easter issue which I really hope you enjoy reading.
Did you know? • Eggs are a symbol of rebirth in most cultures and had already been given as springtime gifts before Easter was first Photo taken at Brockhampton Estate celebrated by Christians. • Eggs are coloured brightly to symbolise the sunlight of spring. • The first Cadbury’s Easter egg was made in 1875, in dark chocolate; milk chocolate didn’t arrive until 1905 with the launch of Dairy Milk. • A new Guinness World Record for the most entrants in an egg hunt was set in London last Easter after 12,773 entrants took part in The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt. • The charity event also broke another World Record when a giant chocolate egg created for the competition became the most expensive non-jewelled chocolate egg ever, selling at auction for £7000. • Egg rolling, which symbolises the rolling away of the rock in front of Jesus’s tomb, was traditionally played with hard-boiled eggs being rolled down a hill. • About 10% of Britain’s annual spending on chocolate is on Easter eggs. • The average time for children to start tucking into their first chocolate Easter egg is 11am on Easter Sunday, with 30% of children eating their chocolate egg instead of breakfast! If you would like to advertise in the May/Jun issue to reach 44,000 readers then call me on 01386 791422 or email editor@familiesherefordandworcs.co.uk. Copy deadline is Friday 5th April.

Funny Blood Funny Blood is a Not for Profit Organisation which raises funds for research and awareness of rare blood conditions. It was founded by Ruby Edwards whose son Noah was only one when he was diagnosed with Platelet Function Disorder with Thrombocytopenia. This means that the number of platelets in his blood are very low and do not work correctly, so even a minor bump may lead to excessive bruising. If Noah is unlucky enough to cut himself he can bleed for a very long time and he often requires urgent medical attention and treatment. The name – Funny Blood – is derived from the way Ruby described Noah’s blood to him and his sister. Pencil cases for Zambia The children of Inkberrow First School are busy filling pencil cases to send out to their partner school in Ndola Zambia in a gesture of goodwill and friendship. It will be the tenth anniversary of the partnership in June. In March the pencil cases will be personally delivered by Mrs Joan Humphrys, Year 1 teacher, and Ben Neal, a former Inkberrow pupil, together with teachers and sixth form students from Pershore High School. Mrs Humphrys first visited the Zambian school back in 2004. Since then many students from Pershore High School have travelled out to Ndola and brought their Zambian friends back to towns and villages in the Pershore area. When she returned from her first trip, Mrs Humphrys gave a message in Assembly to the pupils of Inkberrow First School that ‘One day you too could get a chance to do this!’ This has now come true for Ben. www.inkberrowfirst.worcs.sch.uk
Why send your daughter to a single sex school? Dodderhill School’s results speak for themselves about the benefits of an allgirls education. The Droitwich Spa based school is among the top of the leader boards in Worcestershire, yet some parents still worry that their daughters need to be mixing with boys at school to deal with Headmistress - Mrs Mawston gender difference in society. Dodderhill School has been an independent girls’ school for over 45 years and many of its girls have gone on to lead successful lives and have had no problems mixing with the opposite sex because of their education. An all-girls school gives your daughter the chance to have equal opportunities and be judged on her own merits. At Dodderhill each girl is treated as an individual, allowing her to reach her full potential in whatever fields she chooses. Without the presence of boys in the classroom many girls go on to excel at subjects such as maths and science, which are traditionally male dominated. In addition, sport plays a huge role as part of girls’ education, with many playing sport competitively, alongside the curriculum, enhancing their school life. Cate Mawston, headmistress of Dodderhill School, says: “Girls will perform better being taught away from boys because women think and operate differently. Knowing this means our lesson styles are designed so that the girls get the most from them and are stimulated. Girls tend to be more conscientious and settle quickly in to work. By not having boys in the classroom environment, they can focus on their work, rather than feeling embarrassed on what the opposite sex thinks.” To learn more about how your daughter can benefit from an all-girls education from age 8 -16, visit the school’s open day on Monday 11th March. Education RGS Pupil Wins National Writing Competition Lydia Edwards, a pupil at RGS Worcester, has scooped first prize in the national All Write competition after entering her short story The Journey. Lydia, who is 13 years old, received her prize at the awards ceremony, held at the Z-Arts Centre in Hulme, Manchester. Her story has been printed in the All Write 2013 anthology which contains the 40 best entries out of over 350 submitted for the nationwide competition. Lydia received tremendous praise for her story as she collected the award and her copy of the anthology. She told the judges: “My story was inspired by a visit to my grandmother, who lives in Devon. It was a very long car journey because we got stuck in a horrendous traffic jam, but I decided to occupy the time by observing what was happening outside the window. I’m really grateful to that traffic jam because here I am, a year later, a published writer and a first prize-winner.” As well as having the accolade of being a published author, Lydia’s prize also includes a visit to RGS from an author who will talk to pupils about writing. www.rgsw.org.uk
Eckington under 5’s enjoy new Forest School Eckington under 5’s is set on the outskirts of the village with the use of the recreation ground playing field and private play area. Children are now enjoying the newly opened Forest School which is fun and mainly child led. They are given the freedom to splash around in puddles, collect twigs, examine objects and insects, make dens and explore. The high adult to child ratio means that children can safely experience different things that are usually prohibited such as finding out about fungi, observing mini-beasts or building and lighting camp fires. Tree climbing and swinging from ropes are also popular. Tel 07946 882120, email admin@eckingtonunderfives.co.uk www.eckingtonunderfives.co.uk

Reading out loud in class ‘does children no good’ Well-loved children’s author Julia Donaldson has said that reading aloud in class is too “wooden” to interest children in books, and instead they should be taught how to read by acting out plays. The Children’s Laureate has suggested that reading aloud makes children feel like they are being tested, rather than inspiring them. The author of The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom said that when she visits a classroom she takes small groups of students aside and works on the play with them, before reading it to the rest of the class. “It can develop children’s reading” as well as build confidence, she said. The author launches a new series of short plays written for especially schools this winter, including plays by authors such as Vivian French, Alison Hawes and Steve Barlow.
Room on the Broom coming soon on DVD and Digital Download From the creators of The Gruffalo, this animated magical film is based on the wonderful children’s picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. A kind witch invites a surprising collection of animals to join her on her broom, much to the frustration of her cat. The gang ultimately saves the witch from a fearsome dragon, and in gratitude she rewards them with a magnificent new broom which has room for everyone. Enjoyed by an audience of 7.6m viewers for the Christmas Premiere on BBC1, Room on the Broom whooshes onto DVD and digital download (iTunes) on 18th March. “I have been advertising in Families Hereford and Worcester Magazine for the last 18 months. It hits my target market of mums with babies or young children perfectly. Karen is always very proactive in growing the readership of the magazine, and I know that it is part of my very small advertising budget well spent! Pupils at The River School Energy Club launch with the Mayor of Worcester
‘Energy Club’ the new extra-curricular, fun, physical activity movement for children aged from 4-11 was launched in February in the West Midlands. Worcester was the focus of the regional launch with The River School and Riverbanks WAC Clubs providing an example of Energy Club, an activity that the school is currently offering to their pupils for free, in front of esteemed guest the Mayor of Worcester. The before and after school club, which is currently being rolled out across England, provides a legacy from the Olympics and Paralympics, by tackling the increasingly sedentary lives of young children. Energy Club is a volunteer movement initiated by the charity and social enterprise Sports Leaders UK as it aims to make an impact in primary schools across England. Volunteers will be parents and members of school networks including young adults and volunteers from local companies and all will receive training, on-going support, guidance and equipment. Anyone interested in registering their school or registering to be a volunteer for Energy Club should visit www.EnergyClubUK.org and leave their contact details. What to do if your child is “Different”
W
hen I became pregnant, I felt like I’d stepped through the looking glass. I’d been focusing on my career and never paid too much attention to family life, but suddenly it was everywhere, and I’d unwittingly joined a new club. There were new rules, and I was playing catch-up, but I soon began to feel at home in this warm, welcoming world of bumps and babies. But when my child’s behaviour started to go off the rails, at just 18 months, it stretched the welcome of my new world to the limit. I was forced, eventually, to step through another looking glass – into the world of Special Educational Needs (SEN).
by Gabrielle Starkey
I decided to write this article to help other parents to access the services they may need right at the start of their SEN journey. Every child is different and will need their own, personal help, so one solution doesn’t fit all. But the SEN system can be a maze, and finding the right people and organisations to help you through it is all-important. I hope that if you’re struggling with the fact that your child seems different from his or her peers, you’ll find something on these pages that will help.
My top tips: See your doctor Your first port of call is your GP. If you feel something is wrong, you don’t need to wait for the nursery or school to tell you (although they will, if they feel your child is struggling). Depending on your child’s symptoms, your GP can refer you to CAMHS (the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service – the county’s child psychologists), a Speech and Language therapist or a paediatrician. If you’re referred to CAMHS, ask as soon as possible about the length of the waiting list, as it can be very long (my son was waiting 16 months to be assessed).
Don’t be ashamed Your child’s disability is not your fault, you didn’t ask for it and beating yourself up about it won’t help anyone. It’s natural to feel sad that your high-flying dreams for your child might not now come true, but he/she is still your child and needs you. Think positive.
Keep talking to your child’s school/nursery If your child is at nursery or school, liaise with the nursery manager or head teacher about your child’s progress and behaviour, and keep them informed of any changes outside school/nursery. This can help to build up a full picture of the child’s environment, which might shed some light on the problem. Don’t get defensive – they will be trying to help you and your child, not judging you.
Get reading Once you have received a diagnosis – or even before – read up on the problem, or what you think it is. I have amassed quite a library on Attachment Disorder, Autism, Asperger Syndrome, ADHD, inflexible children and special diets! Be aware, though, that it’s all too easy to misdiagnose your child from a book or the internet – many symptoms overlap different diagnoses, and some behavioural problems actually have their roots in physical or emotional difficulties. For instance, a child who is dyslexic might act badly through frustration, or a child with hearing problems might switch off in class because they can’t hear the teacher. It’s important to see the professionals to get a proper diagnosis.
Reach out and make connections Join a support group, even before diagnosis. This might be controversial, but having a child with an SEN can be isolating, and meeting others in a similar situation – whatever their children’s difficulties – can help you feel less alone. It’s also true that there is help out there that can’t normally be accessed before diagnosis, and you can find out about it at these groups.
Become a “Velvet Bulldozer” Sandy Row, a mother of four adopted children with autism, has written a book called The Velvet Bulldozer about her determined battle with the authorities to get her children properly diagnosed and supported. If you feel you’re not getting appropriate support, don’t just give up – sometimes you have to fight for the best for your child. 10

Your marriage is over… 7 Don’t fan the flames of anger and resentment.
Don’t share in his/her anger as a means of showing support. It’s not your anger to have and to hold. Divorce can be resolved with dignity. Yes it can.
7 Don’t push your experiences onto them. If you
have been through divorce yourself, by all means share your experiences but allow her/him to make their own legal decisions. Your experience was yours and each case is different. If you have information that can be beneficial, offer it but expect that it might not be the best one for him/her.
7 Don’t rush them through the coping process
but instead allow them to really feel the emotions and live through them. It’s all about processing what has happened and/or what is happening.
Your marriage is over, what do you do?
by Soila Sindiyo
There are so many emotions that people go through during divorce but a few of the main ones are loneliness, shame and anger. So what can you do when someone tells you his or her marriage is over?
Here are the dos:
3 Listen. Just listen. You don’t need to come up with any
solutions. You don’t need to offer any advice. You don’t need to do anything else other than listen. Be ready for those long telephone conversations and repetition about incidents and things that the spouse has done/said.
3 Take the initiative. Go see your friend, be with him/her, call her/him. Sometimes people going through divorce feel, for various reasons, that they cannot approach others for help. Don’t leave it up to your friend to ask for help. Offer it and keep doing so.
3 Do continue to invite him/her out to social
events. It’s amazing how once you become single, the dinner parties and social events invitations become thin on the ground. Get him/her out of the house as much as possible.
3 If they are going through solicitors, attend
the meetings with him/her and take a notebook/pad to take notes.
3 Encourage your friend to keep the long view in mind, especially where children are concerned. We make strange and weird decisions when in anger.
3 Do offer practical help e.g. cooking or looking after the children
Here are the don’ts.
7 Don’t start planning and organising blind dates
for them. Let them find their way. Under the same breath, if they seem too eager to start dating almost immediately, speak with them about this as it might just be a means of getting away from the pain and loneliness. Soila Sindiyo is a seasoned therapist who helps families and children get through the challenges of divorce. A twice-divorced parent, she deeply understands the challenges faced by families going through divorce. Her coaching approach was developed over 10 years whilst working with children and families as a trauma therapist, helping children and families overcome the trauma and after effects of crime. Soila today specializes in working with mums and children living with or in the shadow of divorce. Soila is an accredited Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) practitioner. She has a Bsc (Hons) and Msc in Child Psychology) and training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. Soila is also a soon to be qualified family mediator. www.soila.co.uk soila@soila.co.uk 07850 85 60 66
RECENTLY DIVORCED OR SEPARATED FROM A SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP? Suffering: Shock? Disbelief? Rejection? Guilt? Anger? Bitterness? Isolation?
DIVORCED OR SEPARATED FOR SOME TIME?
Feel you’ve got it together? BUT, what about bitterness or resentment? New relationships – are familiar problems recurring?
WHATEVER STAGE – DRW can help you have a better understanding of what you are going through and provide support from others in a similar situation DRW Malvern branch, will be running its next 6-session workshop on Wednesday evenings on the following dates:
7 Don’t take sides. Remember that no matter what, the
ex-spouse was/is someone whom your friend loved enough to marry and have children with. Also, you never know, they might just come back together. If you would like to continue being friends with both of them, then let them know.
March – April 2013

Cooking – Children love cooking and eating pizza, from kneading the dough to making creative faces with the topping! It is also a great opportunity for children to practise counting, measuring and weighing. For extra fun give prizes for the most creative pizza toppings. Cardboard boxes – Are great for the imagination and provide hours of entertainment for creative minds. They make dens, cars and castles, which can be decorated in all sorts of fantastic ways. Small boxes can become spooky disguises – cutting out holes for eyes and mouth and painting on a scary face! Indoor picnic – You don’t have to be outdoors to have a picnic. Gather the dolls and teddies for a creative mock outdoor picnic with a blanket, hamper packed with food, paper plates and plastic utensils. You could even get the children making a giant paper sun to hang from the ceiling. Reading – Spend some quality time together snuggled up on the sofa with your child’s favourite book taking it in turns to read aloud, adding silly voices and actions for the characters in the story to keep it fun and exciting. Indoor Disco – If you’re up for something a little more energetic, raid the fancy dress box for your best dancing queen outfits and have a dance-off in the living room. See who can make the wackiest shapes! Pasta Jewellery – There is nearly always some left over pasta in the cupboard so why not put it to good use by making some pretty pasta jewellery. All you need is some string, glitter and glue and penne pasta – beautiful bracelets for everybody. Treasure Hunt – Agree on the treasures you are going to hide around the house, small toys, wrapped sweets, stickers etc. Create a series of clues leading to the treasure – older children often enjoy doing these and the younger ones finding it. Board Games – Everyone loves traditional board games, which are great fun and also help to develop important social skills, such as communicating, sharing, and taking turns. Make Slime – Yuk! But children will love it. Fill a bowl with water, add a few drops of food colouring (green if possible) and then gradually stir in cornflour until the slime is the right thickness. Children under six should be supervised at all times. Singing in the rain – Pull on your wellies and waterproofs and go splashing through the puddles singing as you go! Then come inside and warm up with some hot chocolate and marshmallows. March – April 2013
