Penny Poetry & Art is the unique new concept from artist and poet Penny Turner Penny Turner, Worcestershire born and bred, is a self-taught artist who some years ago discovered the ability for writing poetry. She has struggled with dyslexia all her life and this achievement of creating an art form from words is one she sees as a real personal mile stone. “This I feel is proof that no matter how a child may struggle at school we can all discover a way of pushing through barriers to find our way in life” Penny says. In 2009 Penny published a children’s poetry book ‘Time for a Rhyme’ which proved popular but she longed to illustrate her poetry creations to bring her poetry and art together. Last year she launched Penny Poetry & Art at Hanbury Countryside Show and people loved her fresh and unique ideas. With a new website you can view her work and Penny is hoping to build on her success. Busy with commissions, she has a diary of local shows where you can meet her and see her work. Ideal for children’s rooms, nursery premises, and play rooms, her fine art prints have a traditional feel with delightful and sometimes humorous poems which both children and parents enjoy. HELP A HEART A group of motivated volunteers from Inkberrow are launching a campaign that could save lives. The Help a Heart campaign aims to improve the awareness of first aid skills alongside fund-raising to provide lifesaving Public Access Defibrillators. This campaign is being backed by the West Midlands Ambulance Service, along with the Inkberrow Parish Council and a variety of other community groups within the village. Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the UK. Approximately 60,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests occur every year and 12-16 young sudden deaths occur every week. Early access to CPR and defibrillation can increase survival from sudden cardiac arrest by up to 75%. A defibrillator is a safe and easy to use device, designed to be used by anyone. It delivers a potentially lifesaving controlled electric shock to the heart of someone suffering from a cardiac arrest. INKBERROW, we need your help. Can you kindly donate and help us raise enough funds to purchase a defibrillator to be placed in your community? With your support we can help protect the lives of the 5,300 people living in Inkberrow. Over the next few months, the HELP A HEART campaign will be running a variety of events for the community of Inkberrow to help raise awareness and promote the campaign. All sessions are free of charge. Dates to look out for include: DEFIBRILLATOR AWARENESS SESSION: Wednesday 28th May 5:30pm - 7:00pm & 7:30pm - 9:00pm at Inkberrow Sports Pavilion. CPR & DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING SESSION: Wednesday 11th June 7:15pm - 9:00pm at Inkberrow Sports Pavilion. FUNDRAISING EVENT & OFFICIAL LAUNCH: Family Sports and Fun Day Sunday 13th July 10am at Inkberrow Village Hall & Playing Fields For more information about the campaign, contact Jess Huxley – 07515 901995. New Nom Nom Kids reusable food pouches combine functionality with fun, offering an environmentally-sound solution for feeding on the go. Founder Suzanne Moore from Gloucestershire said: “As a busy mum of two, I found myself using a lot of prepackaged food pouches while I was out. I set about developing my own food pouch that babies and toddlers would enjoy feeding from and mums would enjoy using. I can now give my children home made food, smoothies and yogurts in our pouches while we’re out and about.” Nom Nom Kids re-usable pouches are available from www.nomnomkids.co.uk and Amazon UK.

Wise Owl Toys of Worcester scores 100% in secret shopper visit. Wise Owl Toys has just received a perfect 100% score when it was visited by an independent secret shopper sent by STABILO, one of Europe’s leading pen manufacturers. ”Everything about the shop was excellent, extremely clean and tidy, very well presented without being massively high tech and off putting. A really nice traditional shop with innovative products and outstanding expertise from the owner/salesman. I didn’t feel there was any improvement needed. I almost wish I had a child with writing difficulties so that I could go back to the shop as it was such a nice experience with a real personal touch which is often lost with large stores”. Mark, the owner, commented “We are delighted to receive 100% and such great comments from the secret shopper. We take pride in our customer service but it is really rewarding to have it noticed and recognised by an independent organisation and one of our major suppliers.” worcester@wiseowltoys.co.uk

Education Severn Valley Railway’s education programme hits 200k milestone

Organisers of the Severn Valley Railway’s education programme are celebrating after hitting the 200,000 visitor milestone. Since its implementation in 1999, the SVR has welcomed school children from across the country and is now considered one of the UK’s leading providers of education programmes within the heritage sector. The Railway takes visitors on a nostalgic trip back in time with a steam train ride through stunning scenery along the Severn Valley and each education programme includes a trip on one of the SVR’s many awe-inspiring steam locomotives. Schools are offered a wide range of programmes including the ever-popular Second World War-themed experiences, which cover all aspects of life from wartime, including evacuations, what is was like inside an air raid shelter, make do and mend as well as food supply, allotments and rationing. Throughout the year, the Railway also works with four partners; Bewdley Museum, Worcestershire County Museum, the Severn Valley Country Park and West Midlands Safari Park, to offer events such as Blitz & Evacuation, Go Wild in the Countryside, Junior Wild Tracks and the Classroom at War. The schools programme runs during May, June, July and September, with additional activities taking place over the summer for Scout and Guide groups and Community Schools, and are run by Sharon Harvey, SVR’s Education Officer who says “Our WWII events always prove incredibly popular with schools as do all of our trips, including those that run in conjunction with our event partners. We are fortunate to always receive great feedback from visiting schools and to hit the 200,000 visitor milestone is a huge achievement and testament to the staff and volunteers who help make these events so successful.” www.svr.co.uk To advertise in future issues of Families Hereford and Worcester magazine please call Karen on 01386 791422 May – June 2014

Galt Toys launches fastest marble game yet Galt Toys launches the Marble Racer, an exciting marble construction game in which up to four players can build a high speed marble race track and compete against each other to reach the finish line.

Following a recent Ofsted Inspection, Inkberrow First School are delighted and very proud to report that they were judged to be an OUTSTANDING School in all categories.

Once players have constructed their racing track from the pieces, each player then places their marble in the starter gate at the top, twist and they’re off! Players track their marbles as they whizz down tubes, chutes and through wheels. The marbles enter the three racing vortex, which change the racing order as the marbles spin around the dish in a race to the podium finish.

Mrs Thomson the Headteacher said ‘We are all thrilled with the outcome and I am very proud of everyone for their contribution towards this judgement’. She said the inspector was really impressed that everyone connected to the school worked as a team and were all pulling in the same direction. He was also very impressed with standards attained by the pupils when they left the school at the end of Year Four.

John McDonnell, Managing Director at Galt Toys, comments: “Building on the success of Galt’s popular Marble Run and Pinball Racer construction games, the Marble Racer allows children to spend hours on end designing speedy racing tracks limited only by their imagination, with a fast paced marble race at the end!” Retailing at £24.99 the Marble Racer is available from www.galttoys.com

http://worcestershire.schooljotter. com/inkberrow

This exciting construction set features three special racing pieces; a starter gate, a racing vortex and a podium, as well as a variety of chutes and wheels for a really fascinating race. What’s more, the Marble Racer is also fully compatible with the Galt Marble Run!

When summing up, the inspector told Mrs Thomson that the school provided ‘an education that all children should have’.

Education Music Success

Children at Winterfold House School in Chaddesley Corbett have achieved great success in recent music events. At the Worcester Competitive Arts Festival in March, eight Winterfold pupils won cups and commendations in various classes, with twelve year old Taylor Williams winning the Musical Theatre Class and eleven year old Lucie Fletcher taking first prize in the Open Lieder Class. The school’s Jazz Band, The Groove Diggers, have also been busy and recently played at the National Youth Music Festival, where judges described their performance as ‘simply spine-tingling’. The school boasts three choirs, an orchestra, two jazz bands and string and brass groups. Director of Music at Winterfold, Jerry Price, said: ‘The children have done incredibly well. The ABRSM results are fantastic, especially when one considers that the children are all under 13. To be attaining Grades 5 and 6 at this age is a tremendous achievement. Many senior schools would be envious of our results!’ www.winterfoldhouse.co.uk

Classic musical is staged at school

One of the world’s best-known musicals was staged at a Worcestershire school as part of a farewell tribute to a longstanding headmaster. The pupils of Abberley Hall School at Great Witley starred in their own spectacular version of West Side Story, the classic Broadway show. The production was the choice of John Walker, who will be retiring as headmaster of the school at the end of this academic year after 18 years’ service. “I have always loved the passion and music of West Side Story so when asked to select which should be our annual senior school production, it was an easy choice,” said Mr Walker. Clare Eynon, drama teacher who directed the show, said “It was a spectacular production and the children worked exceptionally hard to make it a success for their headmaster”. www.abberleyhall.co.uk

Children’s Parties

© Petro Feketa – Fotolia.com

Fabulous Parties at every age A birthday party is a ritual of childhood and an event that’s remembered forever. So the pressure is on – how do you ensure success and survival (both your own and your home’s)? Joanna Moorhead guides you through what’s best, age by age.

0-3

There’s just one word that matters here: simplicity. Birthday parties for tinies can be marvellous, memorable affairs, but they don’t need to be elaborate or to involve much expense or entertainment or special props. In essence, you’re catering for the grown-ups as much as for the children – because at this stage, the adults will definitely stay (and you’re more than likely to have a few grandparents in the mix as well). Concentrate on creating a fun, easy, safe space for the children – a soft play space with plenty of toys strewn around is ideal – and make sure the adults are well catered-for: if they stay calm, the children will as well. If you want something with a bit of a theme, how about a teddy bears’ picnic? Make sure everyone remembers to take their favourite cuddlies home at the end though, or there will be tears at bedtime!

4-6

At this stage parties can be a bit more ambitious and a time when it is well worth investing in a great entertainer: they are experts, know how to crowd control while producing shrieks and honest laughs. However don’t assume that to put on a great bash you need to spend lots of money. At this age children can have loads of fun without a big outlay; later on, when they’re tweens and teens, you’ll be under pressure to shell out big-time, so don’t pre-empt that now. A party at home or in the local park can be huge fun; traditional party games will be popular, and if you want to push the boat out a bit consider investing in a bouncy castle; or if home really isn’t a possibility, a soft play centre will be hassle-free, if more expensive. Themed parties are great for this age group, and they actually make life simpler for the party organiser: a pirate theme is always popular, or sea creatures, or pick up on your child’s favourite book or TV programme. Dressing up is a big hit for this age group too. 10

The golden rules

H Never have a party that last s more than two H The younger hours the child, the few er the guests H Party bags ca n be cheap as ch ips, thanks to ch and pound shop arity s – but always ha ve them, they’re hugely popular H Have a plan mapped out for what should happen when

Party food tips H Food doesn’t need to be complicated H It does need to include options – many children won’t eat ham/cheese/eggs/grapes/pizza H Don’t over face guests with too much food H Putting cup cakes rather than slices of cake into party bags makes life easier

By Joanna Moorhead

7-9

Activities work a treat at this stage, whether you’re at home or in a church hall or at a park. For a popular and low-budget option, think about a baking party at home – weigh out all the ingredients before the children arrive, get them to mix and decorate them and then pop them in the oven to bake while you play a few party games (shortbread biscuits are easy peasy; have a range of cutters for exciting shapes).

10-12

Older children like going out to party. To keep the costs down, encourage a smaller number of guests – think about a trip to the seaside or to an exciting adventure playground they’ve not visited before, and remember that the journey can be as much fun as the activity at the end of it. If you don’t mind spending a bit more, a trip to a climbing wall, an ice rink, a bowling rink or a go-karting centre can be wonderful fun too.

Clubs and Classes

! y l r a e p Book u Rugby or ballet, swimming or gymnastics, drama or Brownies – whatever activity your child loves, how soon should you book for the autumn term? While some of us are happy to wait until the very last minute to book our children’s classes, others prefer to book well in advance.

It is certainly worth starting to look for classes early on – even as much as a whole term in advance. Here’s why: n you won’t get stuck with a term of classes your child detests. Many classes offer trial sessions so if you make the most of them now you can be sure you are choosing what’s right for your child come September. Just because their best friend is doing trampolining doesn’t mean your child will love it

n some activities are so popular that they have long waiting lists (some over a year long!). Book early to avoid disappointment n you can avoid the mad panic of early September. It can be hard enough settling your child into nursery or getting them back into the routine of school, homework and getting up at the crack of dawn – the last thing you want to do is try to sort out clubs! n you’ll get your first choice of time slot. Some classes get so booked up that if you leave it until September the only time you’ll be left with is 7pm on a Friday night – not fun! It’s not unheard of for parents to be queuing outside swimming pools from 6am on the morning registration opens, just to get a workable slot. After-school activities affect the whole family and you don’t want to have to pick up from activities while your other children are desperate for their supper n you’ll get a class that works for your family. More than one child can mean more than one activity on the same afternoon and much as we’d like to be in two places at one time, it’s just not possible. Planning in advance means less stress and more peace of mind. n you’ll get a class in a branch that is close to home. It’s often easier to walk than cramming everyone into the car again, let alone better for the environment n extra-curricular activities are not essential and too many can leave everyone exhausted and stressed, but if you do choose carefully and book in advance, a few clubs and classes can bring huge benefits to your child.

Spring is finally here, May half term is around the corner and the long summer holidays are approaching. If your kids are anything like mine, after just an hour indoors they’ll be climbing the walls. But don’t despair! There are so many things to do over the holidays, from play centres to sports clubs to creating your own fun, and many of them are free! Check out our guide to burning off some of your kids’ energy. n why not try a summer club, class or activity? From cricket to tennis, football to drama, athletics to trampolining or even dry slope skiing, there are hundreds around. Many clubs and classes offer free trials over the summer break – why not try one, and then book an ongoing class for September? n prepare for battle at one of our historic castles. Climb the ramparts at Goodrich Castle, explore the ruins at Witley Court, encounter exotic birds and animals at Hampton Court Castle or attend Knight’s School and try jousting at Eastnor Castle! A fantastic day out for all knights and princesses! n visit a museum. Museums don’t always have quiet or sedentary activities – most of them run children’s workshops throughout the holidays, some of which can be very energetic! Enjoy traditional May Day celebrations at Avoncroft, return to the 1940s at Forge Mill, explore early life forms, dinosaurs, fossils and make a clay dinosaur at Hartlebury Castle, give an old t-shirt a Monster makeover at Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum and much more… n don’t forget the park. Acres of room to run around in, trees to climb and most with children’s playgrounds. Best of all, they are free! n be tourists for the day and explore towns and villages you’ve not been to before! You might discover new parks and there’s bound to be a shop or café that sells ice-creams! n if the weather is not so great why not try one of the many indoor swimming pools especially those with waves and flumes like Malvern Splash or Wyre Forest Glades in Kidderminster, go-karting or laser kombat at Area 7 Karting in Norton, Worcester or even ice skating at Ice Quest Malvern? n if the weather is great then how about the outdoor swimming pool at the lido in Droitwich complete with the play area full of water cannons and fountains to ensure the kids have a splashing good time? Many parks also have paddling pools too. n make up your own games! It’s creative, you’ll have great fun with your kids, and it’s completely free. Organise a treasure hunt in the park, have a trampolining competition in the garden or set up an obstacle course, invite some friends over and give them a scavenger hunt to get stuck into. Go geocaching (similar to a treasure hunt, where you use a GPS to find a hidden treasure), divide your brood into two teams and start a water fight, fly a kite, pitch a tent and fill the paddling pool, or run your own Sports Day. n if it’s bucketing down there’s still plenty of fun to be had (and energy to be expended) indoors. Have a Games Day and challenge your kids to get through a number of board games or table tennis sessions in a day. Make dens or castles out of cardboard boxes then decorate them. Have a disco – all you need is your best dancing queen outfit and an iPod. Treasure hunts can be just as fun indoors as out, or you can even get the kids running up and down the stairs if you’re really stuck! Make a movie or build a den or just put on your wellies and waterproofs and go splashing about in the rain The real trick to have peace, bizarrely, is to have MORE children at your place. They are more likely to engage in games and run around leaving you in peace to put your feet up (well you can live in hope can’t you?!)
