NHS drops limit on Caesarean births
Do you prefer winter or summer in the Alps… or both?
The NHS in England will no longer limit the number of Caesarean sections it performs, under plans to improve care for mothers and babies.
Francesca, Paul and their three children live in Morzine in France all year round and have a good knowledge of Alpine traditions and the Morzine people. Having adapted their chalet holiday style over the years to suit the tastes of their regular guests, they offer the perfect ski and summer holidays for either families, couples or mixed groups in relaxing luxury, with fantastic food and outstanding facilities, with unrivalled inhouse childcare facilities. For many returning guests Chilly Powder is considered a real home from home. Visit www.chillypowder.com for more about Chilly Powder chalets for summer and winter.
Maternity units were previously encouraged to promote natural births and keep the Caesarean rate to about twenty percent. There were concerns these targets led to women pursuing natural births when a C-section would have been more appropriate jeopardising their safety. Pregnant people will now be able to choose a caesarean section, even if this is not for medical reasons, in line with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance. The magic that music can bring Studies show that students who learn to play an instrument often show improved concentration, memory and problem-solving skills. By learning an instrument, children are able to develop their coordination, fine motor skills and even memory.
Video games may bring cognitive benefits
Less play linked to rise in mental health problems
School-age kids who spend hours a day playing video games may outperform their peers on certain tests of mental agility, a new study suggests.
Fewer opportunities to play and roam free has led to a decline in mental health among adolescents, new research suggests.
Researchers found that compared with children who never played video games, those who regularly spent hours gaming had higher scores on two standard cognitive tests: one measuring short-term memory and another gauging impulse control.
The team behind the findings say the reduction in play stems from parents’ ‘good intentions carried too far’ as families are subject to more messages about keeping children safe and more emphasis on school achievement.
Previous studies have reported links between gaming and higher rates of depression, violence, and aggressive behaviour. While this study did not find that to be the case, the gamers did report higher levels of mental health and behavioural issues, although the researchers said that the findings were not statistically significant.
The research was carried out by three prominent specialists in child development at the University of Florida, who say that children’s worsening mental health has ‘crept up on us gradually, over decades.’ Taking part in ‘risky’ play, such as climbing high in trees and activities which encourage personal responsibility, can help to develop self-confidence and reduce the risk of future anxiety, say the study authors.

Additionally, students who play an instrument can learn to better express themselves through music, and by doing so, they can build confidence and self-discipline. All these skills can help children excel academically as well as in their social lives. At The Rock Project, young people aged 7-11 and 11-18 learn guitar, bass, drums or vocals through popular rock and pop songs in small groups, and even play in a band weekly! EDUCATION
Communicating post-Covid: Supporting children with Speech and Language Difficulties at home and in the classroom By Dr Susan Ebbels and Hilary Nicoll Recent reports suggest that lockdowns and social isolation have caused an increase in children experiencing delays in their language and social development. Parents or carers who took on the role of teacher during school closures may have become more aware of a child’s difficulties with understanding or completing homework. Catch-up programmes have been implemented by nurseries and schools to help children close their language development and learning gaps. But what about those whose language difficulties are not caused by lack of experience and interactions? These children may have Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), a hidden but common condition that affects around two pupils in every classroom. These children are not able to learn or catch up language skills in the same way as their peers and may have fallen even further behind. Language difficulties can be hard to recognise, but can lead to problems with literacy and numeracy skills, emotional well-being and/or friendships. If a child is struggling with any of the signs below, it is worth asking ‘Could it be language?’ • • • • • • • • •
Understanding and remembering what to do at home or in class Learning and using new words Following and joining in conversation Expressing their thoughts and feelings Talking about events in the past or future Putting words together in sentences Concentration – particularly when lots of listening is required Maintaining friendships and joining in play Managing their emotions and exhibiting anxiety or frustration around communication
The more of these signs a child shows, the more pressing it is that they receive support. Referrals can be made directly to a Speech and Language Therapist, or via a health visitor, GP or school SENCO. Support from family members and professionals can make a real
6 Families London Surrey Borders
difference to children with language difficulties. We can all help by using these five key strategies: Time – allow the child more time to process information and instructions and to formulate their answers. Do it – children with DLD respond well to a multi-sensory approach to learning. Chunk information – Give one instruction at a time; say exactly what you want a child to do in the order you want them to do it. Ask them to repeat instructions back to you and if needed, say it again or show them. Focus on words – children with DLD know fewer words than their typically-developing peers. Read, read, read to them. Explain tricky words using familiar vocabulary but if time is short, just use simple language! Model it – whether spoken or written, always model the language you want children to use. Provide them with a toolkit of phrases to answer specific questions and model effective conversations with and around them!
