Covid babies fell behind
Babies born in England during the Covid crisis have been slower at developing key language, cognitive and social skills according to official data released by the government.
More than eighty thousand children born in 2020 or 2021 did not reach one or more of the key measures of progress for their age group last year, according to the data, including sixty thousand very young children who did not develop communication abilities usually seen in children their age.
The official data showed that national rates of child development last year were lower among children age 2 than in 2018/2019, before the pandemic, with London reporting the worst rate of development among children surveyed.

‘Urgent action required’ as reading enjoyment falls
Children’s enjoyment of reading has fallen to a twenty year low, a national survey has revealed.
More than half of children and young people do not enjoy reading in their free time, according to a survey from the National Literacy Trust (NLT). The charity said reading enjoyment was lowest among disadvantaged children and warned that the research should serve as a ‘wake-up call.’
The charity warned: ‘Declining reading enjoyment across a growing number of children and young people must act as a wake-up call for all who support children and young people’s reading for pleasure and the many benefits it can bring.’
Researchers say that over half of children ages 8 to 18 (56.6 percent) surveyed this year do not enjoy reading in their spare time.

Put a spring in your child’s step with Perform
Perform is a unique type of children’s drama school. Focusing on child development, a specially formulated mix of drama, dance and singing is used to bring out every child’s true potential. Their classes focus on developing the 4 Cs: Confidence, Communication, Coordination and Concentration and having the best fun of the week.
The curriculum uses a mix of energetic games, catchy songs and funky dances. All class materials are written by Perform with a different theme each term to keep young imaginations buzzing.
The new term starts in April with two brilliant themes. Perform 4–7 year olds will be entering the Fairytale Forest for an adventure with some familiar characters - they’ve taken muchloved classic fairytales and mixed them up with the latest funky moves and grooves. Meanwhile, 7–12s will zoom off on an exhilarating adventure with Robinson Crusoe -but he’s stranded in space, not on a desert island!
Venues in: Caterham, Oxted, Purley, Reigate, Shirley and Worcester Park (NEW venue).

Term time holiday fines at record high
A record 350,000 parents in England were fined for taking their children out of school on unauthorised holidays last year, highlighting the struggle over attendance facing schools since the Covid crisis.
The statistics from the Department for Education reveal that holidays accounted for almost ninety percent of the 399,000 cases of parents being given a penalty notice by local authorities for their children’s unauthorised school absences.
The sharp rise in fines underlines ongoing concerns of a breakdown in relations between schools and parents over attendance and behaviour, since the prolonged school closures during the pandemic.

Packaging learning
By Zuzu JordanBenjamin Franklin’s famous quote ‘tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember; involve me and I learn’ captures the essence behind true learning.
This may be why encouraging your own child to WANT to sit down to learn can feel like an impossible task at times, with parents often questioning how their child is able to sit, concentrate and learn at school.
Covid lockdowns thrust homeschooling onto families. Parents had to take on the role of teachers, experiencing the complexities surrounding learning, while children faced the need to respond differently to their parents as teachers.
Being in a classroom in a school setting, rather than at home, helps children grasp that a different set of rules apply. In fact, in schools, they conform simply because the majority do - children are excellent at policing each other!
There has been a rise in the number of families who choose to homeschool, many of whom have developed effective strategies to create a learning environment at home. Whether you want to homeschool, support homework or just nurture a love for learning, a deep dive into the working mind of a child can offer ways to package learning.
Understanding that learning is something that occurs through experiences or acquiring knowledge and skills, we can usefully engineer situations and scenarios to facilitate this. These techniques can package learning as inviting and exciting.
Use toys. This applies for children of all ages. For example, Nerf guns are great at firing at answers to times table questions or spelling. Scrabble tiles are also fantastic for practising spelling. Foam letters or numbers in the bath are fun for both spelling and maths questions.
Go into the wild. There’s so much learning to be done in the great outdoors: making rain gauges, following maps, gardening, studying wildlife and classification.
Question of the week. To encourage independent thinking, at the start of the week pose a question which doesn’t have an obvious answer. For example: ‘Who built the strongest buildings - Romans or Saxons?’ Developing curiosity in children is key to packaging learning.
Celebrating achievements
This is the fun, rewarding and essential part of parenting, increasing self-esteem and motivating children to keep learning. Try these:
The Tate Modern allows children to upload their own artwork for display in the online gallery (www.tate.org.uk/kids).
Some maths apps have pre-made certificates. For example, Whiterose 1 Minute Maths App (www.whiteroseeducation. com/1-minute-maths)
Blue Peter Badges are fantastic way to celebrate children’s work. There are a number of badges your child can apply for and they even get your child into some attractions for free!
Computer games. The settings and characters in welldeveloped computer games are designed to entice children. This can be good for enhancing creative writing skills.
Emailing experts. Consider setting your child up with an email address so that they can email an ‘expert” in a chosen topic to find out more. For example, if they are learning about volcanoes, they could email a vocanologist.
Book and movie comparison. Turn a movie session into a learning opportunity. Watch the film and then read the book or vice versa. Compare their similarities and differences.
Reading dogs. There’s a lot of research that suggests that children’s reading improves if they read to pets. It’s as simple as that!
Treasure hunts. Children love finding things. Plant words, numbers, sentences, objects and questions around the house and send children to find them.
Board games. A lot of learning can come out of playing board games. Create your own board game linked to your chosen topic.
Current issues - whether environmental, social or political. Find something that your child is passionate about. Write letters, research, devise fundraising events.
Zuzu Jordan is a Mastery for Maths specialist who has taught primary aged children for sixteen years and is interested in early years and home learning. For free homework and home learning resources, find the Facebook page Edumateuk.
Cross curricular learning
Cross curricular learning links subjects together, allowing children to find patterns and connections, thus developing and deepening their knowledge of a subject. For example, writing a diary entry in the role of someone in Ancient Roman times embraces English and history and is therefore a cross curricular activity.
This type of learning helps enforce key knowledge and make subjects meaningful. Cross curricular links are particularly important in maths as they provide context for their mathematical problems.

11 Plus preparation tips
By Jemma Z SmithIf you have decided on selective secondary school education for your child and made your applications, the next step is entrance exam preparation.
The 11 Plus exam will almost certainly contain mathematics and English assessments as a minimum. Both sections will often contain questions on parts of the national curriculum your child has already covered in school.
But not always. You may need to supplement their learning at home via online resources, targeted question books, past papers and online mock exams.
11 Plus preparation: more than maths and English
While English and maths make up the basis of most 11 Plus entrance exams, they are not the only exams that your child might sit. Some papers will contain a creative writing assessment. Some schools also test for reasoning ability. This can incorporate verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, critical and applied reasoning and spatial reasoning.
Many independent schools also call-in applicants for interviews or assessment days where students tour the school and take part in various activities.
A lot of this content is not taught in schools so preparation outside school hours is vital in order to make sure your child is as prepared as possible.
Start early and have a timetable. You might consider tuition, group classes or intensive summer courses but it’s worth working on the preparation at home too.
11 Plus: state grammars versus independent schools
There is no set rule as to what the 11 Plus will look like for entry to your school of choice. However, expect a mathematical ability test and an English test as a minimum.
Many state grammar schools use multiple choice assessments from exam boards including GL, CSSE, SET and Future Stories. All state grammar schools within a local authority often have the same test.
Independent schools can design their own papers which may include non-multiple-choice questions. Some schools have grouped together to form a ‘consortium’ where your child takes just one test to apply to a variety of schools e.g. The London Consortium.
Consult the websites of your chosen schools for details before applying. In addition, ask the schools to add you to their mailing lists, to stay up to date with application deadlines and any changes to the exam format.

Bedwetting beyond age five
By Usha PatelTroubled by your child’s bedwetting? Help is at hand!
‘My nine-year-old is a very bright boy. He is popular at school and is ace at sports, especially skateboarding. However I still find his bed wet some mornings. His father is not happy - he thinks it is a sign of immaturity.’
This problem is more common in older children than you think. If you’re concerned about your child still wetting their bed, let me reassure you: you are not alone. But this is absolutely no one’s fault; not yours and certainly not your child’s. It really is something outside of their control. Parents usually breathe a sigh of relief at this point and ask me if there is any cure.
Usually, the problem lies with the child’s physiological makeup, so I am always happy to tell parents that there is a solution. Reversing this problem is relatively straightforward and sometimes can take as little as three weeks.
Why do children wet their bed at night?
The problem of bedwetting is related to a child’s development before they are born, the birthing process and their early years. It is related to a primitive, unintegrated Spinal Galant reflex.
As the name suggests, Spinal Galant is a spinal reflex. During the birthing process, it helps the unborn baby turn their head and body in a corkscrew motion down the birthing canal.
Around nine months after birth, the reflex has served its purpose, matures and becomes part and parcel of the whole body’s movement.
We call this its integrated state. It has not disappeared but, in fact, has become a building block for the next stage of the child’s development.
However, if a child is delivered by C-section, for example, they do not engage this reflex and so the development stage is interrupted. This spinal reflex not integrating can be one of the biggest causes of bedwetting.
Fortunately, this can be helped later in life by using techniques such as Masgatova Neuro-Motor-Sensory Reflex Integration.
While it takes time to work fully, most children stop bedwetting after two to three weeks of therapeutic work. Your child can finally leave some of that low self-esteem behind and start to be their bright and sparkly selves again.
Characteristics of an unintegrated Spinal Galant reflex
When I assess a child, there are a few things I observe that are characteristic of unintegrated Spinal Galant reflex including:
Avoiding tight-fitting clothes around the waist (preferring elasticated waist trousers or jogging bottoms);
Hyperactivity and symptoms of ADHD (the Spinal Galant reflex is often confused with ADHD);
Frequent visits to the bathroom;
Poor walking gait, sometimes with feet-dragging.
Parents report bedwetting, a curvature of the spine and their child’s inability to sit still for periods of time. Children with unintegrated Spinal Galant reflex will not have complete control of their bowel or bladder, nor proper core control: this affects how their legs move and movement in general. The reflexes are all interconnected and work together, so problems with the maturation of one can very much affect all the others.
Usha Patel is a neurocognitive therapist at Raviv Practice London. If you need advice on the techniques and therapies described in this article, you can contact Usha at www.ravivpracticelondon.co.uk
MNRI and how it can help
Masgatova Neuro-Motor-Sensory Reflex Integration (MNRI) is an evidence-based programme which has frequently been shown to have great results helping children integrate their Spinal Galent reflex. This, in turn, helps children with all manner of developmental problems, including bedwetting.
MNRI is a series of physical exercises and stimuli delivered by a therapist based on an initial assessment of the child’s individual reflex responses. These exercises are designed to promote the functional use or integration of certain reflexes. They are usually done over six consecutive weeks in weekly sessions with the therapist, as well repeated daily at home.
It can take between six months and two years for the problem reflexes to be fully integrated into normal body movement. However, parents can start to see improvements in their child much sooner. In most cases, severe problems, such as bedwetting, can stop as quickly as two or three weeks after starting reflex integration work.
Helping your children spot ‘fake news’
By Katie HarrisonThe term ‘fake news’ first came to the fore during the course of the last American Presidential election, when Donald Trump used it to describe some of the news reporting around the campaigns. Since then, debate about ‘fake news’ has hit the headlines amidst concerns that its proliferation is disrupting elections around the world: it’s one of the most talked about subjects of the year.
But what is it? What does it mean to you and your family? Being news-savvy empowers children and keeps them engaged and motivated to find out about the world around them.
But what should we be teaching them about ‘fake news?’
A recent BBC survey of 18 countries worldwide found that nearly 8 in 10 people said they worried about what was fake and what was real on the internet.
Fake news can easily go viral via social media so it’s vital that children learn to question what they see and read and have the opportunity to discuss it and share their views.
Most school children know what fake news is, but teachers report that many of them aren’t always able to correctly identify it. They don’t always know what they are looking for.
Here are our top 5 tips for helping children spot fake news:
Question, question, question! Who made this? Who is the target audience? Who paid for this? Or, who gets paid if you click on this? Who might benefit or be harmed by this message?
Is the article angry or emotional?
If it makes you feel very strongly, it could be ‘clickbait’ - a grabbing headline to get you to follow a link.
Check what other media are saying Don’t rely on a single source. Are other
well-known news providers sharing this news story? If not, it may not have been verified.
Spell check!
Obvious grammatical errors or spelling mistakes can be a sign that an article hasn’t been professionally produced or proofread and can be a giveaway.
Facts, facts, facts!
What proof or evidence does the article give? Does it cite credible research or expert opinions?
If you can help familiarise your children with what is real and ‘fake’ news, they will soon be able to critically assess what they are reading and seeing.

Time and space for you?
Women’s circles create community, build friendships and can be a lifeline in the perinatal period and beyond. Coming together to share, to offload, to laugh and to relax is the opportunity Mums need to simply be them.
Time for you
Do you ever find that self care is the first thing to get ‘nudged out’ when times are tough? During early motherhood life can get very busy, everyone else’s needs can overtake your own and quickly you find yourself down the priority list and running on empty. When you join a circle your time is protected, it is in the diary, it is going to happen. The people around you are aware… “Mum is out this evening, no questions asked’ It is booked in and is a commitment and investment in your wellbeing. You and your family know that life runs smoother when Mum has had a break, and this is a way to ensure you get it.
Self-care
Often, we can be bombarded with images of what self-care ‘should’ look like. Through the guidance of a circle facilitator, you can explore what you actually need. I am forever telling the women I work with to let go of their expectations. It doesn’t have to be bubble baths and scented candles (although some days it will be!) self-care is quite simply a commitment to giving yourself what you need. Whether that’s a walk in the woods, a night in front of the TV or a catch up with a friend. In circles you will learn to listen to your body, to engage with what you need, you will also feel empowered and encouraged to go and do it, whatever it might look like!
Community
In a post covid world people are increasingly aware of the importance of community, and of the devastating effects of isolation. Nowhere is this truer than in motherhood. Some groups can encourage competition or comparison, but in circle there is no judgment, your circle celebrate your wins and are by your side when things feel tricky. Meaningful conversation with other women allows people to see that they are not alone. Having a space to be open, honest and vulnerable is rare and when you find it, you’ll realise how much you needed it.
Starting a women’s circle can be a powerful way for women to connect with one another, share experiences, and support each other. Carve out time and space for yourself by starting your own circle time, with other Mums in your community, or for simplicity you can reach out to facilitator’s who can guide and support you through the process.
Kate, founder of The Circle Sessions now has helped many women to set up a Women’s Circles within their communities, in person, online and one to ones. www.thecirclesessions.co.uk

Top tip for Mothers facing sleep challenges
For mothers facing challenges with their little ones sleep, Vicky’s top tip is to prioritise consistency in bedtime routines. Establishing a predictable and soothing bedtime ritual can work wonders in promoting better sleep habits for both mother and child. Start with calming activities like a warm bath, gentle massage, or reading a favourite bedtime story. Create a tranquil sleep environment by dimming lights with red or amber bulbs, playing soothing classical music or white noise whilst minimising distractions. Stick to a consistent bedtime schedule, even on weekends to regulate your child’s internal clock. Be patient and persistent, as it may take time for the routine to take effect. Remember, consistency is key in helping your little one feel secure and relaxed, paving the way for peaceful nights and rejuvenating sleep for both mother and child.
