Babies learn like ChatGPT
Recent research into infant learning suggests that while human infants are perceived as significantly more helpless than their animal counterparts, this period of vulnerability is a critical time for cognitive development, akin to the initial training phases of sophisticated artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT. This phase allows infants to absorb and process vast amounts of sensory information, laying the groundwork for advanced cognitive abilities later in life, according to a new study by Trinity College Dublin.
Infant learning begins right from birth. During this period, babies start recognizing faces, sounds, and patterns. This early learning is crucial for cognitive development and babies learn from simple activities like reading stories and playing peek-a-boo.
This research challenges the traditional belief that infant helplessness is due to brain immaturity, revealing a crucial overlooked phase of early cognitive development.

Children’s writing at ‘crisis point’
Children’s writing is at a ‘crisis point’ as the number enjoying it in their spare time dwindles, a report by the National Literacy Trust suggests.
The number of young people who say they enjoy writing has fallen drastically over the past 13 years, according to the National Literacy Trust research. Just 28.7% of those aged between 8 and 18 said they enjoyed writing in their free time in 2023, compared to 46.8% in 2010.
At the same time there is a decline in children’s writing attainment with only 69% of children having met the expected standard of writing in Key Stage 2 Sats in 2022, compared to 78% in 2019. Most children (72%) enjoy writing in their free time at ages 5-8 but this steadily declines as they get older.

Why
academic success alone is not enough
Elmhurst has long been known for punching above its weight in all areas of the curriculum. Whether it is a maths, writing or sporting competition, regular victories make them no stranger to performing at the highest level.
Nevertheless, one of the most important developments the school has made in recent years is the increased emphasis on speech and drama.
Mr Brook, the Drama lead, has brought an expertise and enthusiasm that has been transformative for the pupils. An expectation that all pupils will perform removes any reticence, as enjoyment is an assumed reality. Parents are amazed by the pleasure their children take in being part of regular performances. Pupils build confidence, well-being and selfbelief: the best foundation for wider success.

How to be great at spelling
By Zuzu Jordan
For children, learning how to spell isn’t just about passing school tests but being able to write words correctly in their extended writing. As adults, spelling is essential for effective writing, both in the professional world and on social media.
There are many tools that can help, such as auto correct, predictive text and even AI (Artificial Intelligence). However, children do not have ready access to these at school where they are expected to spell independently. Learning is key.
Here are some techniques:
Ensure that they know all the 40+ phonemes
Some children need repetition of the phonics taught in early years. Children will be taught the 26 letters of the alphabet, 44 different sounds called phonemes and the corresponding graphemes (the written symbols that represent a sound). Making sure they are secure in their phonics understanding can make a difference in their ability to spell words that follow patterns and rules.
Learn the exceptions to the rules
The many words that do not follow patterns can be confusing. Knowing what these words are and discussing how they are the ‘tricky’ words brings them to your child’s attention so they are mindful of them when writing. Also choose English over American spellings.
Rhyming games can really help
Children find similarities between words and this expands the number of words they can spell. For example, if they can spell ‘rain’ then they can spell ‘gain.’
Looking for words within words
This is a great way of breaking up larger words eg the word ‘independent’ has the words ‘in,’ ‘pen,’ ‘dependent,’ ‘dent.’ Equally, most words can be broken into syllables and each syllable usually has a vowel (or sometimes the letter ‘y’).
Seeing the shape of the word helps visual learners
For example, the word ‘tall’ has one tall letter and a short letter followed by two tall letters.
Mnemonics is like making up a story to help spell a word
For the word ‘because’ use the mnemonic ‘big elephants can always upset small elephants.’
The traditional method of ‘look, say, cover, write and check’ works for some children but comes with a warning
Not all children respond to this method and the words don’t always enter their long-term memory. Practising writing the word out helps your child become familiar with the shape of the word. Rainbow spelling is another visual way of learning spellings: maybe use one colour for a specific sound and different colours for the other letters.
Using technology and apps
The app Squeebles Spelling Test starts with a list from the national curriculum and you can upload your own words. Children can then practise their spellings independently.
Use different materials to practise writing the words
Like with paint or foam or in sand. Scrabble-like tiles can be bought from most hobby shops and are great for kinaesthetic learners as they can physically move the letters into the correct order. Equally, playing games like Scrabble and Hangman is also helpful.
Ultimately a multi-faceted approach will bring the best results when supporting your child’s spelling journey.

Developing confidence, communication and creativity
Families LSB talks to Simon Long, principal of Drama Kids Croydon.
What inspired you to get into drama, and who was your greatest inspiration?
I originally started taking drama lessons when I was 5 years old. Being the youngest of three brothers, my mum felt that I needed an outlet to help express myself. She found the amazing Helen O’Grady Drama Academy (now Drama Kids) and it was one of the best decisions she ever made for me. I was inspired by the teacher, Ian Brown, original Principal of the academy, and my passion for drama grew and grew. I gained confidence, learned to speak clearly to people around me and I had a new way of expressing ideas that were already in my imaginative mind.
What sets Drama Kids apart from other drama and performing arts schools?
Unlike other performing arts schools, our aim is not to create the next shining star of the West End. Our aim and our entire ethos is about the development of each child through drama. We have a structured, professional curriculum that explores voice, movement and creative drama. Every child is given opportunities to help them grow in confidence, develop better verbal and nonverbal communication skills through our speech training and movement sections, and improve creativity through improvising and devising their own performances. We encourage children to be as imaginative as possible and there are no wrong ways
of doing things in our classes, but often unique ways, and a safe space to explore them.
How do you create and implement engaging lesson plans?
Our teachers are highly trained to deliver our unique curriculum, and each lesson is taught with energy and enthusiasm. The curriculum has been developed over 45 years by a team of top drama creatives who ensure that it is updated with new and interesting ideas for each lesson. Each teacher is unique, so they are given the freedom and flexibility to teach and implement the curriculum in their own way. The activities are high energy, lots of fun and give plenty of opportunities for creativity from our students.
How do you use theatre games and exercises to improve students’ performance skills?
Children in our classes are continuously being challenged to add to their performances. No matter which activity, the teacher takes time to explore the acting opportunities that a piece can offer. We encourage use of vocal tone to express emotion or meaning, physicality and mannerisms to make a character seem more believable and challenge our pupils to take risks to enhance their devised pieces. Theatre games are also a good
opportunity to get pupils to think outside the box and perform in ways that are unique without being judged.
How would you build confidence and a love for drama in children who have not had the opportunity to engage with the arts before?
With new children we always ease them into our classes, confidence doesn’t happen overnight and for some children it can take years to fully come out of their shell. A lot of our children have had no prior experience when they first join us, but no child is ever put on the spot in our classes, everyone is fully involved from the start of each lesson, and we give them the chance to play around with ideas and scenarios just using their imagination. The children at our classes are very friendly and we encourage them to always help each other if someone is feeling nervous.
Describe one of your happiest moments since taking over Drama Kids Croydon.
I have had many wonderful moments since taking over as Principal, but I suppose our Summer Productions will be something I won’t forget soon. We had an amazing time performing showcases at Royal Russell School and I really felt the community come together for that. We had one of my own students, who started with me when he was five, help us out for his work experience and to see how much he has grown in confidence since starting made me very proud. We had several longstanding members teaching their own classes and the smiles on everyone’s faces was priceless!
Cooking classes for your child
By Andrew Campbell
For many adults, cooking can feel like a mundane chore but for children cooking is anything but. Most children love to be let loose in the kitchen, and enrolling your child in cookery classes or a cooking club will not only be great fun for them but also help them acquire important developmental skills.
Most importantly, either now or at some point in the future, you may get a break from cooking as your children take to the kitchen themselves!
If you need any further persuading, check out the important skills cooking classes will teach your child:
Fine Motor Skills. Mixing the ingredients, rolling the dough and using cooking implements are great ways to enhance fine motor strength and control.
Maths’ Skills. Cooking involves measurement such as cups, teaspoons and tablespoons and the need to understand fractions, addition and subtraction.
Comprehension. Reading and understanding step-by-step directions, adding ingredients in sequence, and techniques like folding and blending, all test your child’s comprehension skills.
Scientific Concepts. Cooking involves plenty of science. Children learn what happens when certain ingredients are mixed together as well as what happens when the measurements are incorrect.
Focus and Attention. When cooking, children need to stay focused and pay attention to detail or the recipe will not be
completed correctly. Children learn quickly that they have to pay attention if they want to eat that brownie or biscuit at the end!
Adventurous Healthy Eaters. Learning to cook introduces children to new tastes and textures that they haven’t tried before which means they will be more likely to experiment with eating new foods. They also learn which foods are healthy and which are not.
Self Esteem. When a child is able to successfully complete a recipe and make something edible, they feel a sense of pride and confidence. As they become more experienced cooks, they become more independent, which boosts their self-confidence even further.
Life Skills. Cooking is a skill that is essential for adulthood. Children can learn from an early age how to make their own sandwiches, pour milk or heat something in the microwave. As they do this, they learn not to touch a hot stove and how to use a knife correctly. Older children can learn to cook meals for themselves and the family. This sets them on the road to being responsible, independent individuals.
NOW ENROLLING
gain ongoing confidence, and learn how to make new friends and have fun. Our programme provides the opportunity for children to become confident in themselves and develop their social skills and self-awareness by encouraging them to be more confident in communicating with peers and adults, practicing presentation skills and public speaking while developing creativity and lateral thinking.
They learn to enhance concentration and the ability to listen well, improve use of the English language and increase clarity of speech as well as developing teamwork and leadership skills, helping to widen friendship groups and gaining enthusiasm, energy, and a positive approach to life!

Making money real for kids in a cashless society
By Tanith Carey
To a young child, money is a magical commodity which allows grown-ups to go into shops and take anything they want. And it’s not just about understanding where money comes from and how it’s used: in an increasingly cashless society, money is even more of an abstract concept for kids to grasp.
In the days of coins and notes, children could see that money was something tangible, used for goods and services; and that it could run out. Now that we can just tap and go, kids don’t even see money being exchanged. So, it’s even harder for them to see that it’s not an unlimited resource. This requires parents to put a little more thought into helping kids understand how finances work. After all, managing money is a lifelong skill, bringing a range of key benefits.
As well as boosting their maths, money teaches kids how to control their impulses, develop patience, delay gratification; and ultimately spend wisely throughout life. Indeed, according to research by Cambridge University, attitudes to money are formed by around the age of 7.
Practical life lessons
Kids first grasp what money represents around the age of 6. Start by paying them their first pocket money in coins to make it tangible. Give them a see-through jar so they can see it disappear when they spend it. When you’re out and about, try to use cash as well as cards. Each time you do use your card, explain it’s the same as having the same amount taken out of your ‘jar,’ aka your bank account. As they get older, start sharing your own spending decisions too.
Tips for teaching younger children
Pay pocket money as in the real world: a fixed allowance on the same day each week, just like a wage and it’s their responsibility as to how to spend it. This teaches the value of money and that it’s not an unlimited resource.
Help them track their money on screen: if you give them a prepaid debit card, as many parents do, show them their balance on a family tablet. Watch the numbers go up and down together.
Let them earn: come up with some small jobs around your home and set a price for them. When you transfer their pay, let them see it pop up on screen. This will show how work earns money and how money gets transferred.
Play board games: Money-based board games like Monopoly and Pay Day still use old-fashioned play bank notes and can also introduce concepts like debt, mortgages, taxes and saving.
Talk about it. For example, when you go to buy an ice-cream with them, chat through the different prices for each item. Explain how the higher the cost, the more money will go out of your bank account. When you go to pay, rather than just tap, show your child the amount displayed on the card reader so they link what you’re buying to the money it costs.
Explain that if you spent all your money on ice-creams, you would have less to spend on other more important items you all need, namely food, clothes and travel.
Pocket money is one of the seventy five real world scenarios tackled in the book What’s My Tween Thinking? Practical Child Psychology for Modern Parent co-authored by Tanith Carey with Dr Angharad Rudkin, published by DK books and available now from www.bookshop.org
Tips for teaching older children
Share your spending decisions
Parents often don’t share with children how much money they have or how they make financial decisions. So kids may believe you have an unlimited amount and one day they’ll be the same. To help them think responsibly, calmly share some of your own money management decisions. When you’re out shopping, chat through your choices and how you compare prices. You might also show how your purchases affect your bank balance, so they learn basic cause-and-effect.
Talk about the difference between a ‘need’ and a ‘want’
In a tap-and-go society, it’s easier than ever to use a card to buy an item without thinking. That’s why it’s important to introduce some ‘friction’ to slow down the process. When you buy something, talk about the difference between a ‘need’ and a ‘want.’ Explain that ‘needs’ are everything you require to survive, like food, shelter. ‘Wants’ are complementary add-ons which are nice to have but you can live without them.
Make hanging pumpkins for a twig tree
We asked our friends at Hobbycraft (www.hobbycraft. co.uk) for a spectacularly spooky Halloween craft activity for parents to do with their kids and they’ve come up with these cute pumpkins to hang on a twig tree.
Instructions:
Step 1:
Print off the pumpkin template at www.bit. ly/pumpkintem or get creative and draw out your own pumpkin shape. Cut it out.
Step 6:
Take a 15cm piece of cord and glue it to the front of the pumpkin to make a hanging cord.
You will need black ribbon, A4 felt sheets in orange, green and pink, soft toy filling, black card, a glue gun, scissors and a pen.
(All materials plus twig trees can be purchased at Hobbycraft).
Step 2:
Use a pen to trace your pumpkin template onto a folded piece of felt. Cut this out to give you two identical pumpkins.
Step 7:
Trace the pumpkin stalk onto some green felt and cut out two pieces.
Step 3:
Use a hot glue gun to put a line of glue around the edge of one pumpkin and stick the other on top. Leave the bottom open.
Step 8:
Glue one piece of the green felt stalk to the front and one to the back, sandwiching the hanging cord in between.
Step 4:
Stuff the pumpkin with a small amount of the soft toy filling.
Step 5:
Use hot glue to close the pumpkin.
Step 9:
Cut face details out of some black card and add to the pumpkins for a spooky finishing touch.
