Help tsunami victims by folding paper cranes

Here is something practical you can do with the family to show support for the people in Japan who are still struggling to deal with the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami.

Sutton launches book share scheme

Help to make a 1000 origami paper cranes. Origami for Japan is organising a worldwide initiative in support of the people of Japan following the recent devastating earthquake and tsunami. Folding one thousand origami cranes is a Japanese symbol of mutual support, a concept based on ancient legend which promises that on completion, a wish of recovery will be granted. For folding instructions see http://www.origamiforjapan.com/?page_id=35 1

People across Sutton are being invited to join a “world first” scheme which allows members of the public to open up their bookshelves and share their favourite books with their neighbours. The scheme involves people listing the publications they own online so they can be borrowed by fellow readers. It is open to anyone who lives or works in Sutton Borough. Adrian Short, who developed the system, said on his blog that the scheme is not a replacement for libaries. “One of the aims of Sutton Bookshare has been to make books that aren’t available in the library available for people to borrow,” he said. http://www.suttonbookshare.org.uk/

news & views Local netball teams welcome star player - seek new players England Netball and Surrey Storm player Tamsin Greenway took a special training session for Lifeline Netball Club and their back-tonetball group Netball Mummies The two local clubs, based at Wallington Sports Club in Hillside Gardens, Wallington, enjoyed some expert coaching from Tamsin, the captain of Surrey Storm who play in the Fiat Netball Superleague. Lifeline Netball Club currently play in the Croydon, Met and Greenacres netball leagues and are keen to welcome any experienced players to their training sessions on Monday evenings at Wallington Sports Club. Netball Mummies, a group of mums from Bandon Hill Primary School are all about getting back to netball. Kidspace adds interaction zone Kidspace Adentures in Croydon has added a high-tech interactive zone for younger children. The system allows them to interact with virtual fish and virtual football. A powerful computer projects a video of, say, a pond with fish in it onto the floor. A camera suspended in the roof tracks children as they interact with the image and when a child tries to catch a fish, for example, the projector makes splashes and the fish swims away. It’s almost magical in its effect, so much so that small children can be seen checking their hands to see if they are wet during a session. But it’s not just fish. A range of games revolve every 90 seconds or so. In addition, Kidspace has added an interactive wall where children can chase the lights with their hands. Older children wil be thrilled to see that the go-kart track – always one of the more popular attractions — has been doubled in size. www.kidspaceadventures.com/croydon

Theatrebugs brings workshops to Epsom this Summer Former ‘Jackanory’ director and editor of the ‘Watch with Mother’ videos, Julia Allen, is bringing the Theatrebugs programme to Epsom and Ewell this summer. Theatrebugs’ five-day holiday courses are packed with drama, music, dance, arts and crafts and dressing up. On the last day, the children hit the stage. The courses will run in Epsom and Ewell during the week of 25 - 29 July. “At Theatrebugs, we don’t put miniature actors on a professional stage – we are focussed on building each child’s confidence, enhancing their self esteem and imagination and allowing them to just be children and have lots of fun,” said Julia. “One of the key differences from other drama programmes” said former Reception class teacher, Julia, “is that our wide age range for our workshops (3½ – 8) usually permits siblings to come along to the same holiday workshops.” Another benefit, she said, is that the drama programme has been carefully worked out by drama professionals to meet the needs of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) of the National Curriculum. 01932 765525 www.theatrebugs.co.uk. allow mums (and dads and grandparents) to do everything under one roof.”

The new Beanies cafe aims to be a refuge for stressed parents in Croydon, offering activities for children up to about eight years old; classes, great coffee and tea as well as beauty therapies, massage and even a child-friendly hairdresser and an in-house nail bar.

During opening week —the first week of June—many of these options will be available as the partners aim to make a big splash to encourage people to see what is on offer—and perhaps to re-live their memories of the Beanos record store.

Buy cereal from Asda; get the kids to read

Mini Treasures nursery opens in Morden Hall Park

Stories and poems from leading authors will appear on tens of millions of cereal boxes for a few minutes of morning “Facebox time” for children.

Following a series of successful open days in March, a new day nursery has opened in the beautiful surroundings of Morden Hall Park.

An ambitious literary project designed to inspire millions of kids to read more has been launched by Asda and Puffin Books. The partnership will see excerpts from classic childrens’ authors appear on the back of tens of millions of Asda cereal boxes nationwide.

Mini Treasures is now open 51 weeks a year, from 8am until 6pm. It is within easy reach of trams, buses and Morden tube station. Head of the nursery and proprietor Sharon Siwoku, has over 10 years’ experience working with children and families. She said all staff are CRB checked and are either qualified or working towards a qualification in early years.

World-renowned author Roald Dahl will be first in a series of writers featured on Asda own-brand cereal boxes.

In particular, the Nursery is surrounded by lovely open spaces within the grounds of the National Trust property, and a safe, fenced off area near the buldings.

Children were also tested on their knowledge of classic authors and famous literary characters. Thirty five percent thought that Rudyard Kipling made cakes, 20 per cent thought that Phileas Fogg was a crisp manufacturer and 15 per cent thought Fogg was a weather forecaster.

Children can even ride bikes and trikes in the car park area. www.mini-treasures.com 020 8648 6275

Make Time for Mums — have fun and learn too If you are a Mum with a young baby and want to do something fun and educational with your child, try a Time for Mums class. They run mum-focussed but baby-friendly events and activities which can help you learn a new skill, find out more about how your baby grows and just have a little fun. From Photography for parents, discovering your storytelling and storycrafting skills, belting out some Glee-inspired tunes with our Singing Mamas amateur group, or finding out what really goes on in your baby’s brain – there’s something for every Mum. Local mother Ania Wilk said, “I found that there were disappointingly few places that would allow me to do something of interest to me, but where I could also take my baby daughter, safe in the knowledge she would not disturb anyone and there would be somewhere safe and warm for her to lie on.” They are now in Croydon, Crystal Palace and a few Surrey locations and more courses and venues are being added. www.timeformums.com or call Ania on 07753533577 3

Parenting holidays and travel Carshalton park honoured in Mayor’s safety awards Photography by Flickr: Danacea

One of Sutton’s most historic parks has been recognised for its safety in a London-wide awards scheme. Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has given The Grove Park in Carshalton a Silver Award in his Safer Park Award Scheme. It was one of just 31 parks across London recognised in the awards. Previously awarded “Green Flag” status for its environmental credentials, the park had been blighted by anti-social behaviour by a small group of youths that caused persistent problems in the last few years.

DEET-free insect repellent Incognito has launched a new, chemical-free insect repellent spray which is made entirely of natural ingredients and is the only product acknowledged by Trading Standards to be ‘clinically proven to protect against malaria’. Parents can now go on holiday knowing their little ones are protected from mosquitoes without exposing them to chemical repellents like DEET. www.lessmosquito.com

What do you do when you’re out for the day, your baby needs changing, is crying up a storm, and you don’t know where the nearest baby changing rooms are? That’s where the beauty of the NCT’s new iPhone app comes into life. NCT, the UK’s largest parenting charity, has just launched the first interactive charity iPhone application for parents, ‘NCT Babychange’. It’s free to download and allows you to locate the nearest baby changing facility in the area, view its star rating, and then rate it for other parents to use. The app already has over 5000 baby changing sites listed including supermarkets, train stations, shops, restaurants, libraries and local authorities, with the capacity to add more. www.nct.org.uk/babychanging for more details.

Bright ideas for birthday parties by Robina Cowan

Crowd control: entertainers

DID SOMEONE SAY party? Yes, they did. One thing’s for sure — your child will have another birthday in the next year.

A good entertainer will bring your party to life and keep the children enthralled while you enjoy the fun from a safe distance. There are parents who think nothing of timetabling two hours of games and entertaining a classfull of tweenagers. But for most of us, keeping Other People’s Children entertained can be stressful, so expert help is often worth the investment.

It’s Families to the rescue — we’ve put on our party hats to find the best suppliers around to ensure your party is one they’ll talk about, at least until next year....

Before you start It’s worth bearing in mind the differing needs, interests and numbers of particular age groups. Don’t feel the party has to last all afternoon — around two hours is enough before everyone gets tired and emotional (and that includes the hosts). As a guide:

e group, eir preferred ag TIP: Find out th ildren ch of r be um num and the maxim y and with - too man they will cope them. e best out of you’ll not get th agreed ve u’ er ything yo Write down ev day. e th on t doub so there is no

One and two year-olds aren’t yet ready for a big affair. Most parents opt for a family get-together or a not-too-big buffet with a handful of friends with similar aged children. Enjoy it while you can — it’s a doddle to organise and sociable for the adults. It has been known for babies to sleep right through while the grown ups catch up over nibbles.

Take them out: venues Do you really have the time, energy and creativity to decorate your house as a fairy or superhero den, then clear it all up a few hours later? Thought not.

Three year-olds need planned activities. Name-badge them on arrival then capture their imagination with simple ‘circle time’ singing and clapping games, or jumping up and down to music (call it ‘dancing’, if you like). Balloons can burst and that can trigger tears, so hang balloons high, like decorations, rather than introducing them as playthings. The ideal guestlist for this age is around eight to twelve children in a venue where they feel familiar — usually your home (sorry about that!) Four to six year-olds enjoy joining in with traditional party games, such as Simon Says, Musical Bumps, Pass the Parcel, What’s the Time Mr Wolf, and Musical Lions (a favourite with parents, as the children have to be quiet and still). Also, allow space and time for simply running around in bursts of unstructured play. You’ll be thankful in those moments that you blew up all those balloons. Plenty of engaging games and giggles keep things rolling, and if you’re hiring help, then puppeteers, music-makers or storytellers are a good bet. A maximum of 20 guests at this age is agood rule of thumb. Seven to nine year-olds are ready for more concentration and involvement in the party entertainment. Most are old enough and skilled enough for arts and crafts (making their own goodie bag filler at the same time, which is jolly handy). Alternatively, dancing, circus skills, drama or a team treasure hunt are good ways of harnessing energy. If you fail to plan they’re likely to fall back on that old favourite: “who can scream the loudest?”

TIP: Children’s en tertainers generally have a lot of experienc e and contacts w hich you can tap into. Ask them about local venues, a realist ic timetable and suitable prizes

Ages 10+ and this worldly-wise lot is unlikely to want Mummy and Daddy embarrassing them by donning a paper hat and insisting on joining in (save it for when they’re reaching their teens — it’ll be so much more fun for you). They’ll be wanting to do something special, such as bowling, karting, a mini disco in the living room, or a Glee-style drama and singing workshop. Alternatively, a good bet is a jaw-dropping magic show, particularly when they can ‘help’. Parents will hope that they won’t heckle the magician with “I know how you did that”, as I overheard recently. 9

Happily there are plenty of TIP: Book well ahead places where you simply pay . There are many party only so groups ven the per-head charge and the accommod ues can at e at any give guests will be entertained and don’t want n time - yo to be scra u fed, leaving you to return to tching arou the last m nd at inute and e your quiet, tidy house nd up havin g to book ‘seco afterwards. Most time-short nd best’. experienced parents would agree that child-friendly restaurants, bowling alleys, go-karting, indoor playcentres, sports clubs, the zoo, a pottery painting studio or cinema can significantly ease the stress of party time.

Themed parties A great idea when your child has a particular interest, themes can be explored in many different ways. How about a drama, musical, circus or magic party, a sports party; or get crafty making bags, jewellery or cookies, or print t-shirts to match the theme?

Top tips It’s all in the timing: for little children, 11am-1pm or 12-2pm are best. Most of them have been up since six and they’re past their best by the afternoon. For older children a lunchtime slot or mid afternoon start will work Liaise with parents whose children have birthdays around the same time. If you both book the same day for a party, the guest list will be tricky as you end up competing. Joining forces is a much better idea - you can share the costs and the hassle. Keep the food simple and don’t over cater. Most children are too excited to have a big appetite. Limit the junk food and remember some children maybe vegetarian or have a food intolerance. Sleepovers: come midnight, you’ll be regretting it... Planning ahead is essential. Read our ‘been there, done that’ parent’s guide: go to www. familiesonline.co.uk and type ‘successful sleepovers’ into the search box.

sticking and painting or do a massive collage together. The newspaper game is brilliant fun: a pile of broadsheets, two teams, screw up the paper into balls, shout “GO!” The winners end up with the least ammunition. Paint a plant pot. This doubles as an activity and a going home gift and you could add seeds like sunflowers or cress seeds too.

Parties can cost a small fortune so we’ve put together a list of top tips on how to cut costs. They may involve extra effort on your part, but we’re all in this together. Share your party You’ll half the cost at least and the more the merrier – however, beware of parties with flocks of children as they can be impersonal and a little unruly.

Party in the park or garden

Avoid expensive party bags Try these ideas: use brown paper bags or even sandwich bags. The birthday cake becomes the sweet treat in your party bag; packs of books from www.thebookpeople.co.uk can cost less than £1 each; car boot sale toys are always cheap. Give them a clean, wrap them up, put them in a lucky dip and your guests will be chuffed to bits. Simplify your party menu Pizza delivered to your party is a great idea and the kids love it. For drinks do squash rather than individual juices. Jelly is cheaper and more play structures in the UK, children have two hours of party fun, play and feasting. Various packages are available: Jumping Juniors for the under threes; Classic and DeLuxe party packages available. Optional extras include children’s champagne, party bags, adult food platters. amusing than lots of biscuits or fairy cakes.

If you’re lucky enough to have a spring or summer birthday then the park or garden is a must.

Get creative with party entertainment

Do your research or use your house

It’s much more fun (and hard work) to do it yourself than hiring an entertainer but children love traditional games and parents will be impressed. Try some of these: pass the parcel with forfeits; musical statues; musical bumps and disco dancing competition.

For kids born at cooler times of year it’s hard to avoid the expense of hiring a venue so do your research. Check church halls and councilrun venues like leisure centres, playgroups or nurseries. If you are brave enough to have a party in your home then put down big sheets so the mess can be cleared easily, and create boundaries for the guests – you don’t want to find jelly in your bed.

Make a junk robot: save all your recycled bits and pieces and the children can have fun

Exchange a child; make a friend

schools have their own exchange programmes; however more and more parents are opting to organise exchanges through a number of different companies, all of whom will help you to arrange the swap. Here is our guide to help you navigate your way through arranging an exchange, so that your child has a successful and enjoyable experience.

By Joanna Parry

Learning a language can be the key to your child’s future, giving them an invaluable skill that will set them up for life. A French exchange can be a fun and interesting part of that learning — your child is immersed in the culture of the country, which often proves to be the most effective way of rapidly improving language skills. “They develop greater mental agility, better communication skills and awareness of another culture,” said Annie, a mother of 3 who is a great fan of French exchanges. “Beyond the academic benefits, exchange visits are a wonderful way to develop your child’s self-confidence and inter-personal skills and for them to make new friends.”

Top tips for a great exchange When you’re choosing a family to exchange with, make sure you look for a match not only with your child’s age but also their interests — shared passions are often the key to a successful exchange, whether it be football, horse riding or music. “My son went to stay with a lovely French family in August,” says Kate, mum of four. “We liked the family and the boys had similar interests, that was key.” A reputable exchange site will help you find a good match, but you can help by emailing or chatting to a number of families before confirming the exchange. Once you have chosen a family, encourage your child to communicate in French with their exchange partner by telephone or email. Make sure your child’s health records are up to date and write a parental authorisation in case of medical emergency. If your child has to take

The basics

But how easy is to organise a French exchange, and how do you start going about it? Many any kind of medication, make sure everything has already been purchased and that the prescription goes with your child. Make clear notes of allergies to food or medicine. Send your child to France with some spending money for outings and souvenirs. Don’t forget to encourage your child to pack a camera, a notebook for writing down daily adventures and an MP3 player for the trip. A welcome present for their exchange’s family and a mini-dictionary will be useful too. Make sure your child has full travel insurance and a European Health Insurance Card (E111 form or F-HIC). It may sound obvious, but don’t forget to double-check their passport is still in date. When your child’s exchange comes to stay with you, enjoy taking them around your home town and seeing some of the sights you may never have found time to visit before.

Exchange visits are based on reciprocal hospitality — your child will stay with a French family and one of the French family’s children will stay with you. Once you register with an exchange company, they will ‘match’ you with a French family based on age, interests and family background and then discuss with you possible dates of visits. Finding dates that work for both families can be tricky, so try to be as flexible as possible. Remember, you don’t have to restrict yourselves to the summer holidays — a half term swap can be a good bet too. An exchange should only cost you a minimal fee to arrange, and then the cost of your child’s transportation. Be aware of some of the expensive foreign language travel programmes that sometimes masquerade as exchanges. Most companies recommend exchanging when your child is 12 or over, for a maximum of two weeks. However it is possible to arrange an exchange for a younger child and some sites arrange for swaps for an extended period of up to six months. Most exchange companies are available to provide assistance with translation and travel advice and to generally act as a ‘go-between’ if this is needed. Although you will make your own travel arrangements, the French family is contracted to meet your child at the nearest port, railway station or airport. Sending your child off to live with another family can be stressful. “You need to be bold, have an open mind and be willing to trust another family with your child,” says Annie. “In return, when it is your time to host somebody else’s child, you will need to provide for them and make sure they feel equally at home. But I promise you, it’s all worth it. You will be giving your child the gift of a new language and a friend for life.”

education Children grow up too fast, say parents A survey of 1000 parents of all backgrounds has revealed that 88 percent think that children are under pressure to grow up too quickly. The survey forms part of the independent Bailey Review of Commercialisation and Sexualisation of Childhood, commissioned by the Department for Education to examine issues around the premature sexualisation and commercialisation of children. Findings from the survey show that: 40 percent of parents said they had seen things

in public places (shop window displays, advertising hoardings) that they felt were inappropriate for children to see because of their sexual content. 41 per cent of parents said they had seen programmes or adverts on TV before 9pm that they felt were unsuitable or inappropriate for children due to their sexual content. Of those parents who have never complained about these issues 60 per cent said that they had

not done so either because they didn’t think anything would be done or they didn’t know who to complain to. More than half of parents felt that celebrity culture, adult style clothes and music videos are encouraging children to act older than they are. The survey results, focus groups responses and findings from the call for evidence will be published in the final report of the Bailey Review in May. Look for it at www.education.gov.uk/

Click IT! starts classes in local day nurseries Click IT! computer lessons for pre-schoolers are now starting in day nurseries in the area. Lynn Howard is in the process of expanding the company into Surrey and is busy in four local day nurseries. She will be setting up more over the next year. The course is available to all children between the ages of two and five years old who attend the day nursery. The lessons are structured to help the children become computer literate before they start school. The children have lots of fun but learn many new things along the way. If you are a parent or a nursery manager and would like to see Click IT! in your nursery, contact Lynn on 020 8393 9922 or email cheam@clickit-kids.co.uk.

Biff, Chip and Kipper hit the high street The UK’s best-selling Read At Home series will be re-launched this May as Read with Biff, Chip and Kipper. The phonics approach used in the books is in line with how children learn to read today. The series from Oxford University Press follows the lives of the much-loved characters, Biff, Chip, Kipper and Floppy the Dog. Children will undoubtedly recognise them from the Oxford Reading Tree series, used in more than 80 percent of UK primary schools to help almost two million children to learn to read every year. The Read with Biff, Chip and Kipper books will be widely available to purchase from 5 May 2011 (RRP £3.99). www.oxfordowl.co.uk

Government slims down EYFS content A new report recommends that the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sshould be radically slimmed down to make it easier to understand and more focused on making sure children start school ready to learn. The current EYFS has 6 areas of learning and 69 learning goals. These goals are used to monitor children’s progress while they are in pre-school. At the age of 5 they are assessed against these goals, on a 117 point scale, as part of the EYFS profile. The new report by Dame Clare Tickell recommends a raft of proposals to reduce the bureaucracy. Among these are a proposal to significantly reducing the number of early learning goals children are assessed against at age five from 69 to 17.
