Local prep school wins award for Innovation in Equality

An independent school in Hendon has won the ISA (Independent Schools Association) Award for Excellence and Innovation in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

Hendon Prep was applauded for innovative projects that involve marginalised communities and for having "a culture that promotes equity, diversity, and inclusivity," said Rudolf Eliott Lockhart, Chief Executive Officer, ISA. “By fostering an environment actively promoting equality, we encourage our students to consider perspectives and opinions beyond those they’ve already formed, or were shaped in early life by family and friends” explained Headteacher Tushi Gorasia. “Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion should be the cornerstone of teaching and a leadership priority, as we know that children learn best when they feel safe, valued, and welcome.

"This award is wonderful recognition of the hard work my committed team do here at Hendon Prep.”

Hendon Prep is an independent day school for boys and girls from 3-11 years old. www.hendonprep.co.uk

London's Cherry Blossom book WIN!

Make Mother's Day

We might be in the depths of winter but Spring and cherry blossom is on the horizon.

Among the fans of Sakura – flowering cherry trees – is Annegret Schopp O'Dwyer, previously author of Marco Polo's guide to London, who turned to photographing the blossom during the first lockdown, creating the first book about London's cherry blossom.

"I was undergoing treatment for cancer at the time, and seeing the blossom gave me moments of pure joy. I wanted to share that joy," said Annegret, who has worked as a psychotherapist for 25 years. She has woven in some historical facts about the streets where the blossoms appear, taking us on a walk through hidden corners and the lives of ordinary people. From the reviews on Amazon, Annegret has succeeded in sharing those moments of joy. Perfect for a Mother's Day gift.

Rise in norovirus cases

Norvirus, also known as the "winter vomiting bug", has been on the rise with outbreaks mainly among children in educational settings. According to the UK Health Security Agency, handwashing is very important to prevent the spread of the stomach virus as, unlike Covid-19, alcohol gels in hand sanitiser do not kill it. www.nhs.uk/norovirus

Annegret Schopp-O’Dwyer, MSC
LONDON’S CHERRY BLOSSOM BEAUTY AND HISTORY JOY AT YOUR FINGERTIPS Annegret Schopp-O’Dwyer,
This is the first book ever celebrating the Cherry Blossom in London! Its aim is to allow the reader to experience ‘a cherry moment’ any time they open it, even without a garden and in deepest winter, a moment of real joy. Wonderful photos, taken in the first lockdown in 2020 when London had fantastic blue skies in early Spring, are accompanied by light-hearted, but useful socio-historical text. Annegret Schopp-O’Dwyer has worked as psychotherapist in London for 25 years. An experienced translator, BBC2 presenter, Goethe Institute lecturer and writer of Marco Polo London guide, she found herself unable to work during the first lockdown. So she decided to realize an old dream - photographing London’s Cherry Blossom, having fallen in love with the Sakura in Japan. As a Psychotherapist, the author is very aware of the healing power of both nature and beauty, hence this well-considered approach for a book that wants to give moments of joy to all its the readers. Sharing her own love of the cherry blossom in the form of a tangible book seemed a suitable solution for a time with so many uncertainties. In order to reach a wider audience to enjoy her ‘little flowers’, she decided to link the blossom she chose to historically or socio-culturally interesting sites in London, of which there are so many, allowing readers could let themselves fall in love with the beauty of the blossom while getting to know interesting, little known facts about our wonderful town. Putting pupil wellbeing first

As we all become more aware of the connection between physical, social and mental health, so there is a growing body of research into mental health problems in children in the UK. An independent north London school group is using this evidence to strike a healthy balance between academic development and personal wellbeing.

Known for its 'high support, low pressure' ethos, successful north London school group, North Bridge House takes a life-course approach to mental health, promoting wellbeing throughout children’s education. “We are aware that academic success is inextricably intertwined with physical and mental wellbeing. We aim to use every educational opportunity to promote our students’ wellbeing by ensuring it is at the heart of everything we do,” said Brendan Pavey, Executive Headteacher of North Bridge House. Ten per cent of children aged 5-16 years have a clinically diagnosable mental problem, yet research shows 70 per cent of children and adolescents who experience mental health problems

have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age.

The life-course approach starts in North Bridge House’s Nursery & Pre-Prep West Hampstead. “Our aim is to connect children with the world around them to promote mindfulness and key critical thinking skills,” said Nursery & Pre-Prep Head of School, Eilish Sleator. “Whether it’s hatching chicks and butterflies, sculpting in the mud kitchen, or growing their own basil and parsley, here they have an opportunity to develop an understanding of and respect for nature, which supports the seven areas of learning and development in the early years, and promotes feelings of calm, purpose and self-worth.”

At NBH Senior Hampstead, the school allotment produces food for the canteen. “Educating our children on the importance of healthy eating and its impact on their wellbeing is much more than showing and telling,” says Executive Head, Brendan Pavey. “It’s involving them in the act of feeding themselves so they are far more invested in a healthy lifestyle."

The school has implemented a later midweek start for Prep and Senior students, shaping the school week around the adolescent body clock and current findings regarding teen sleep.

Rooted in the fabric of the school, societies such as the LGBTQ+ Society and Plants, People and the Planet provide students with a sense of belonging and security. “Adolescence is a challenging time for children and with it can come concerns over image, questions over identity, struggles to 'fit in', and doubt regarding self-worth,” said North Bridge House Senior Canonbury Head of School, Charlotte TassellDent. “Our enrichment programme

Above:

encourages the development of skills and tools necessary to deal with changing hormones and general adversity, including coping strategies, self-regulation, and emotional literacy.” While the school’s Plants, People and the Planet group combines mindfulness and gardening with environmental council, the LGBTQ+ group leads on initiatives to support the Stonewall charity as well as the school’s mission to celebrate the individual.

In a society where 50 per cent of mental health problems are established by age 14 and 75 per cent by age 24, the Good Schools Guide describes North Bridge House as “a safe haven for developing teens.” With its integrated vision for education and wellbeing, the school continues to prove much more than simply its academic worth.

A choice of parenting with love and kindness

When was the last time you felt you were smashing it as a parent?

Parenting can be tough. But it’s so much easier when you have the right tools to understand your children better, so that you can parent calmly and confidently, meeting your child's needs – and your own.

So where do you get these tools? The great news is you already have all the tools you need – you just might not know how to use them, yet. As parents we try any old thing in the heat of the moment, and it can make us feel like terrible people at times. "That's where the Circle of Security Parenting course comes in," said Sophie Guthrie-Kummer, director of Choices, a charity that specialises in supporting parents. "Choices has a strong history of supporting parents in and around north London and our course will help parents to understand what's going on with their children and to build strong connections with them. Parents will feel more in control, less overwhelmed and – most importantly – able to manage any situation with love and kindness. On these solid connections, children thrive and flourish long into the future.

Mum-of-two Sophie added: “We’ve all had times when it feels like our child wants to be the boss, or we hear our own parent’s voice come out of our mouths and we think ‘oh no! What am I doing wrong?’. The Circle of Security course shows you how to take charge and

become the informed parent you want to be, able to meet your child’s needs lovingly, without being pushed about by them –or anyone else!

“The course is different from others, because we focus on understanding what a person is really communicating when they’re acting out.”

Circle of Security is an 8-week course - blending online & group learning. We're giving an early-bird rate for the first eight people who book. Join our waiting list to be the first to know when we're taking bookings. The first and last session will run from a central/North London venue. www.choicesislington.org/parenting-course

Practical ways to save money on private tuition in 2023

For many parents, the current cost of living crisis has forced them to make tough spending choices and education expenses are no exception. If your child needs extra support in Reading, maths, English or entrance exam prep, you might feel guilt that you’re balancing their learning needs against rising expenses.

Ant Learning, a private tuition provider located in Southgate and online, recognises the challenging financial climate for parents and has identified ways parents can save money on private tuition. These include tax-saving schemes such as: 

Employer childcare vouchers Tax-free childcare Company holiday schemes

Company holiday schemes are popular with parents wanting tuition for their children over the summer. While tax-saving schemes are a great way to reduce tuition fees, there’s more. Group tuition, which Ant Learning offers is cheaper than one-to-one tuition while offering a sociable and structured learning environment. Parents can also save money with its 5% discount on additional enrolled siblings and enrolled referrals.

Ten top tips for alleviating children’s anxiety

Parenting is often marvellous and rewarding but it’s also complex, especially if your child is struggling with anxiety and you are unsure what to do next. Families asked Claire Moreau, a qualified mindfulness teacher, to share her tips for lessening children’s anxiety.

Be fully present

Mobile phones are part of our lives and essential communication devices. Yet, the alerts keep us constantly looking at them. Being fully present with the activity or conversation we’re having with our children –without being distracted by mobile phones – demonstrates that we value "real" time together and are fully available.

Top tip: at mealtimes, get everyone to put their phones away for a set length of time.

Wear a Hat for a better future

Headline fashion: March 31 Wear A Hat Day

Wear A Hat Day, an iconic and fun annual event, is one of the UK’s most popular and family-friendly charitable fundraisers and it’s happening again on Friday, March 31

Running for more than ten years, this event raises millions for vital research into brain tumours – the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40. Wear A Hat Day events help children explore their individuality and creativity, while learning about different life experiences, all while giving hope to brain tumour patients and their loved ones. Join as a family or by persuading your local school to take part. Register now for more information and your FREE fundraising pack. Just use the quick and easy webform at www.wearahatday.org

Avoid fuelling anxiety

Children absorb emotions like sponges and if they don’t know how to manage them, they can feel frustrated, powerless and overwhelmed. Overhearing the news or emotionally-charged adult conversation can fuel children’s anxiety. Teenagers can be alarmed by news threads on social media. Besides climate change and Covid, younger generations are now worrying about the war in Ukraine and its potential consequences.

Top tip: Avoid watching/listening to the news with young children; talk to teenagers about the news threads they follow; keep adult conversation amongst adults. Without altogether avoiding sensitive topics, discussions can be held within families in an age-appropriate way.

Limit screen time

Research has found that too much screen time can lead to mental health issues in children, such as anxiety and depression. Most children prefer electronic media to playing and interacting with family and peers, which impacts their social development.

Monitor screen time, ensure the content is age-appropriate, communicate with children about inappropriate images and model healthy device habits.

Top tip: Board games, reading and listening to music are great alternatives. Ask your kids to help you discover their musical tastes – this can lead to rich intergenerational conversations!

Encourage children to express feelings

Children are more likely to express their feelings when they sense that we are fully available. Sitting in an area they pass by when returning from school or a weekend activity and gently inviting them to join us can be a start. Teenagers might be more reluctant than young children to express how they feel. Letting them know that we’re ready to welcome whatever troubles them might not produce an immediate result, but, in time, it can prompt them to open up.

Top tip: tell them they have the right to feel overwhelmed or stressed – "it’s okay not to be okay". Listen intently to them without moving into ‘fix-it mode'. Sometimes they just need a steady, listening ear.

Offer reassurance

Small steps can go a long way. If they worry about the future, bring them back to the present – "right here, right now, with you, all is well." Tell them that you love them no matter what. These are both pillars of mindfulness.

Create a family routine that dissolves worries even if only for a short time. In my family, every other Friday, homemade pizza is sacred. We catch up while cooking, then watch a film together.

Top tip: Empower them by doing something as a family to help the situation they are worrying about – for instance, organise a car boot sale or a family run to raise money for charity.

Struggling to fall asleep?

With little ones, creating a comforting, wind down routine helps – reading a book together, listening to soothing music.

With teenagers, blocking the mobile phone at a set time is recommended. Finally, at all ages, placing hands on the belly, breathing easily and focusing on the breath, following the gentle movement of the belly as it rises and falls, counting the breath to ten (in  : one, out: two, in: three, out: four, etc) over and over can quieten a busy mind.

Top tip: whatever age, no screens before bedtime.

Speak to your GP

If, despite your best intentions and care, your child’s behaviour or anxiety level becomes worrying, it is best to seek medical advice. GPs can refer a child to a psychologist or occupational therapist with training in mental health.

Top tip: getting support for yourself while you’re supporting your children is critical. Charities like www.youngminds.org.uk run a parent’s helpline and provide free advice and support.

Spend time in nature

The term nature-deficit disorder (NDD) was coined by Richard Louv in his 2005 book Last Child in the Woods. NDD can contribute to many problems, including higher rates of physical and emotional illness. The good news is it can easily be reversed. Village greens, parks, commons and nature reserves are perfect for free family activities. Walking, cycling, playing frisbee or racket sports help lift the mood

Top tip: Swap a meal indoors for a picnic, yes, even if it is cold! Nothing beats a good walk or cycle ride before returning home to a hot drink or meal.

There are many mindfulness apps/recorded meditations for adults and children which may help them to relax and unwind. However, nothing compares with attending a course with a qualified mindfulness teacher. Such a course teaches key mindfulness skills that help children and adults identify and manage emotions, improve concentration, relax and strengthen inner resources. Parents and children can benefit from simple exercises that help establish a strong mindfulness practice.

Top tip: children’s courses are only taught in person but many adults' courses are now delivered on Zoom so it is easier to fit them around family life.

10 Encourage them to read

Reading not only provides a good alternative to screen time but is also relaxing. A 2009 study from the University of Sussex found reading can reduce stress by up to 68 percent. Just six minutes of relaxing into a good book can lower blood pressure and muscle tension. It’s a great distraction technique.

Top tip: reading can also become a special family moment— older children can read a story to younger siblings or parent and child can each read a page aloud.

Claire has over ten years of meditation and yoga practice and three years of experience teaching mindfulness. She is particularly interested in how mindfulness can help parents and children develop wellbeing and cultivate emotional resilience, kindness and compassion. Modern technology enables children to live a ‘safe’ existence. However, research by Play England shows that 'age-appropriate risk' allows children to experience fear and learn the strengths and limitations of their bodies. So, take a deep breath, but maintain adult supervision at all times.

Use a hammer: A poorly hit nail can fly unpredictably so eye protection is vital. Show your child how to hold the hammer in the middle of the handle and keep the nail in place by holding the bottom with their finger and thumb.

GENTLY tap the nail. Once the nail stands up on its own, they can move their hand away and use greater force.

Spend an hour blindfolded: It will teach them how to better use their other senses and build empathy and awareness for non-sighted people. It’s important the blindfold doesn’t let in any light so your child’s other senses are activated. Find fun blindfold games at www.blindfoldsensoryplay.com.au

Throw rocks: It’s almost impossible to take young children for a walk in the woods or along the beach without them picking up a stick, rock or seashell and throwing it. Children love the feeling of propelling an object away from their body and watching where it goes. Channel this urge by teaching your child the situations in which it’s both fun and safe to throw an object eg skimming a stone on water. For guidance, visit https://bit. ly/NTskimstones

Use a pocketknife: Another life skill that develops with experience - and guidance - is using a knife safely. Whittling or wood carving is fun and creative and a great way to introduce kids to safe knife skills. For

great tips, safety advice and simple projects, visit www. woodlandtrust.org.uk/ blog/2019/05/how-towhittle

Climb a tree: According to many experts, this should be encouraged as children are challenging themselves in a fun and physically active way. It is, after all, the num ber one adventure on the National Trust’s list of 50 things to do before you’re 11¾. Find guidance at bit. ly/NTclimb

Play conkers: This ancient British game is only really risky when played incorrectly or when children are trying to hurt each other. For tips on preparing conkers and on winning visit www.bit.ly/WoodlandTrustPlayConkers

Blow up a bottle of coke: This classic, explosive science experiment is simple but messy – outdoors is a must. Find instructions at www.bit.ly/cokeand menthosexperiment
