Recognising a good state secondary school
By Melanie Sanderson
Choosing a secondary school is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make for your child. Very likely, your two priorities are whether your child will reach their academic potential and whether they will be happy there. Here are my tips on what to look for.
Hot-house or greenhouse?
Is the school educationally aspirational and how does this manifest? Look for relaxed and respectful teacher-pupil relations. They are key to successful learning. Is the library well-stocked and busy? Teacher recruitment and retention is challenging all schools. Ask pupils how often they have cover teachers.
Are pupils regularly assessed?
Performance measures such as Progress 8 are good indicators of how a school adds value as they measure academic attainment rates over time. Are there programmes to stretch the more academic children? What about those with special educational needs and disabilities?
Breadth of curriculum
The best state schools offer and value a broad liberal arts education beyond the standard curriculum. For instance, Bohunt School in Hampshire ‘blew the socks off’ the Good Schools Guide with immersion classes in Mandarin. Some of the best state schools
invest in top notch sports facilities and coaching, others have outstanding creative or performing arts spaces.

Building Character for Future Success
Head of Channing Junior School, Dina Hamalis believes in the Heraclitus quote “Character is Destiny''. With the workplace facing rapid change due to AI, she's focused on equipping pupils with the skills they'll need to thrive in any environment.
Located in Highgate, Channing School embeds Character Education from Reception onwards, laying the foundation for academic success and lifelong well-being.
"We don't know what world these girls
Channing girls take the field
Top right: Dina Hamalis and pupils
are going to grow up in," says Dina Hamalis. "We need to give them lots of different skills that could be applicable to various jobs and life itself. Life is changing all the time."
While the school's tagline is "Girls Enjoying Success," success has a broad definition at Channing. It encompasses academic excellence, a love of learning fostered through a diverse curriculum, and the development of well-rounded individuals.
“It’s very important to make sure that we’re stretching and challenging every individual child academically throughout our very broad and balanced curriculum, making sure they’re doing that in music, PE and Forest School, Art and Design. We aim for them to develop a lifelong love of learning. I think one of our main roles as a school is to teach the children that learning is fun and exciting and being curious is a good thing.”
Most four-year-olds can probably manage “curious”, but how do you

teach a child of that age what it means to be resilient, responsible or respectful, let alone encourage them to use those traits consciously? Meet the Channing characters: Independence Owl, Empathy Rabbit, Bravery Mole, Curiosity Fox, Resilience Robin, Perseverance Squirrel, Respectfulness Hedgehog and Responsibility Badger. These characters bring abstract concepts to life, transforming them into tangible tools children can use. They appear on classroom posters, stories, reward stickers, soft toys, and are woven into everyday conversations by staff, children, and parents. They have given everyone the vocabulary to talk about intangible ideas – the best kind of homework for parents.
“I think one of our main roles as a school is to teach the children that learning is fun and exciting and being curious is a good thing.”
"It took nearly a year," explains Dina. “We looked at a lot of research. We considered the Government guidance, but we wanted it to be something for our school. The girls and staff came up with the different character traits that they thought defined a Channing girl.”
The entire school community played a role in the creative process.
"An idea like this needs to be cut from the fabric of the school to truly connect with the community," says Dina. “I think community is something we do really well here. Everyone is valued and that really comes across when you speak to the girls and the staff.”
Dina emphasises the importance of relatable characters.
"I wanted characters the girls, particularly the younger ones, could refer to and get to know. We settled on forest animals, reflecting our extensive and valuable Forest School programme."
Although fluffy, these forest creatures have a serious purpose.
"You hear four-year-olds using quite sophisticated vocabulary and understanding what it means," says Dina.
Creating these characters was a considered process.
“These character traits are really important because they help develop learning skills,” says Dina. "It's about fostering a growth mindset, not a fixed one. The girls need to be brave, embrace mistakes, and move forward with their learning. It's crucial for their growth. We don't want them to coast. We want them to be ambitious, work to their full capacity and potential. We ensure that all the children are stretched and challenged to the appropriate level so that they can become the very best version of themselves."

As a charity, Highgate believes an independent school education should be accessible to all academically gifted children, no matter what their background. They’ve been supporting free education since 1876 and, today, their Junior School offers free or substantially discounted places to eligible families through their bursaries programme.
“My daughter has really gained confidence and flourished at Highgate. She has become the child that I always knew she could be.”
A Junior School parent whose child receives a bursary said:
Bursaries are means-tested, with up to 100% funding awarded. Applications are welcome from families in the local community, particularly from under-represented 15heritages and key workers. highgateschool.org.uk/bursaries
Why listening leads to learning
By Karen Thomas
As the Head of The King Alfred School's Lower School, with children from Reception to Year 6, it’s my job to ensure there are clear structures which allow students to have their voices heard. One way we do this is by rethinking traditional parent-teacher progress meetings.
Traditionally, the grownups talk about a child’s progress and attitude to learning. Vital conversations take place without the most important person present. We do things differently. Each term students invite their parents in and, along with their teacher, they show their work, talk about their progress and
measure it against goals they themselves have set. They’re asked to reflect on their learning behaviours, celebrate successes and talk about how they can improve. The children are expected to have an opinion about their own learning, to take responsibility for it and work as part of a team with their teacher and their significant adults to improve it. We routinely see how children feeling heard as part of these learning conversations, and the ownership they feel of their experience, leads to a positive classroom environment for everyone.

Overcoming failure and disappointment
By Lisa Wander and Catherine Loble
Whilst studies show that children learn better when they experience failure, no parent likes seeing their child upset or disappointed. It feels right to help them avoid anything seemingly harmful they encounter, whether that be through distraction, bargaining or a quick credit-card swipe.

Best family walks for wildlife spotting
We asked our friends at The Outdoor Guide to recommend some of the best UK ‘walks on the WILD side!’
Brownsea Island, Poole Harbour, Dorset
Brownsea Island is a haven for wildlife including red squirrels. Dorset Wildlife Trust also has some hides on the island where you can get glimpses of the resident and visiting birdlife that migrates here during winter.
Blakeney Point, Norfolk
Show your kids wild seals - the Norfolk coastline is a great place for it!
There are colonies of grey and common seals that can be seen on the tidal sands, as well as migratory birds including redshanks, oystercatchers and avocets. This is a long walk though so best for older children.
National Trust Charlecote Park
The grounds of Charlecote Park, on the outskirts of Stratford upon Avon, has been home to a herd of fallow deer for centuries. Legend has it that William Shakespeare was prosecuted for poaching deer from here!
Richmond Park, London
During the autumn, male deer show prowess by clashing antlers with their rivals. Watch the deer rut in Richmond Park in London, home to fallow and red deer. Remember, keep a respectful distance and ensure dogs are on leads. This is a 7-mile circular walk so will only be suitable for older children.
We asked our friends at The Outdoor Guide to recommend some of the best UK ‘walks on the WILD side!’
Somerset Levels
Later this year, one of the wonders of the natural world will return to the Somerset Levels - the starling murmurations. Thousands of starlings come to roost here amongst the reedbeds. The peak season is November to February.
The Needles, Isle of Wight
With views out across the English Channel, you may glimpse a pod of dolphins that have become regular visitors here. Surrounded by the sea, this walk also gives you the chance to see marine birds including gannets and shearwaters. This is a longer walk so do consider your child’s age and capabilities.
Regency Walk, London
Even in the heart of London you can go for a walk to see some amazing wildlife. The Regency walk takes you past St James’s Park - well worth a detour to observe the abundant birdlife living on the lake - you might see the pelicans that live there too!
Petworth Park, West Sussex
The deer park in Petworth, West Sussex, is home to between seven and eight hundred fallow deer. The lake also offers the chance to see various ducks and geese.
If you’re a National Trust member, pop into the cafe afterwards for a well earned cuppa and slice of cake.
