Winchester is first choice for unique childrens’ Drama School London based Perform Drama, Dance and Singing Workshops started a class in January 2000 with 3 children. They now have 3,500 children attending their workshops across London and have chosen Winchester as their new destination and are opening in September 2011. Perform is a new type of children’s drama school. They use a unique mix of drama, dance and singing specially formulated to bring out every child’s true potential. Classes are kept small to ensure lots of individual attention by their experienced actor/teachers. They work exclusively with 4-8 year old children and their focus is entirely on The 4 C’s. Confidence, Communication, Co-ordination and Concentration. They don’t send children to auditions or castings, but focus on helping children develop their social skills whilst having the best fun of the week. They are also centrally run as opposed to being a franchised business. Principal Lucy Quick says “We are incredibly excited about opening in Winchester from September. It’s a creative area, and we have already found some fantastic local people to lead the workshops.” Classes in Winchester will be at Holy Trinity Parish Church Upper Brook Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 8DQ on Saturdays at 9.30 am and 11.15 am. All children are invited to a Free Trial Session. Please call 0845 400 4000 or visit www.perform.org.uk

News Back to School time....

Record demand for Nannies

The Bow Company supplies stylish school hair accessories that are small enough for little fingers yet strong enough to endure the playground. Whether you need a complete set or an individual piece, there is something for everyone.

Tinies, the UK’s largest nanny agency, has reported a record rise in the demand for nannies during the first half of this year. Enquiries for nannies has double that recorded in the same quarter for 2010. Claire Adams, director at Tinies, says “The start of the year is normally a busy time for us, but this year has been especially so. We have had just under 2000 new enquiries from parents looking at hiring a nanny, nny, with the majority of requests coming from mums who are looking ki to t return t to t workk this thi year.””

They also supply schools on a wholesale basis whereby schools can purchase stock directly at trade prices and then re-sell it through their PTA’s, school shops etc. This includes the unique bespoke service whereby your school uniform is incorporated into the accessories themselves to compliment the school uniform.

The strong indicator is that mums are returning to work after time off, such as maternity leave, and sometimes earlier than planned, in order to boost household income. VAT rises, the cost of food, fuel and utilities are all contributing to higher costs per household. Some mums are looking to return to work having been out of the job market for a few years. Others are looking to switch from using a nursery to using a nanny, to make use of more flexible working hours, particularly as they can use their childcare vouchers to offset a nanny’s salary. For more information on Tinies, go to www.tinies.com or call 01256 698055 or 01202 313177

Introducing a “Register your School” scheme from September, register your school and for every retail purchase we receive via the website we will donate £1.00 directly to that school, details on the website www.thebowcompany.net

THERE’S A NEW PARTY IN TOWN… pass it on! Jamie Oliver is coming to Town!

Top Tips for encouraging your child to read (1) Get into a good reading routine, especially if your child isn’t the type to pick up a book without encouragement. A few minutes each day will make a big difference. (2) Be positive! Use praise whenever you can. (3) Don’t force children to read a book page by page if they don’t like it. Instead, share the reading between the two of you or let them choose another book. (4) Don’t push your child up reading levels too quickly. Children gain confidence and are more likely to enjoy reading when they don’t have to struggle with too many words. (5) Reading isn’t just about books! Encourage your child to read the words on menus, food packaging, DVD cases etc.

Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity to be part of his exciting new business Jamie at Home. We are currently seeking self-employed Managers and Consultants with or without Party Plan experience and anyone looking for extra income in 2011. Could this be you? For more details contact Sarah on 07796 170200 or vc_sarah@hotmail.com.

Music Students Rocked Out at Charity Concert Pupils from the Lymington and Hythe branches of Clive’s Easylearn Rock and Pop Schools took to the stage this summer in Brockenhurst, to play a rock concert and raised £650 for charity Rose Road, providing services for young people with disabilities. Rock classics old and new were played by bands comprising the rock school’s pupils on guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals, many of who were on-stage for the very first time – and loving every minute. Student band, The Last Memory, opened the evening fantastically and showed everyone how far they had come learning with Clive’s Music. Managing Director of the Clive’s Easylearn Rock and Pop Schools network, which now has over 70 outlets across the UK, Sophie Brooks, said: “It was a tremendous evening, it’s fantastic to see the children being able to engage with our Easylearn teaching concepts and put them into exciting, practical action.” To request a free taster session for your child in guitar, bass, drums keyboards or singing, simply log on to www.clivesmusic.com or call 07871 493120.

Education

School Matters

Basic facts for every school

By Elisabeth Dolton

Make sure you have chosen the right school for your child, with these simple ways to monitor the progress of the school and your child

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Number of applications Number of pupils Test & exam results Attendance levels Ofsted & Independent school reports Reported incidents of poor behaviour Number of exclusions imposed

So you have been through the dilemma of choosing the school and now your child is settling into their new environment. Your job is done... or maybe not. Now it’s time to start thinking about how to monitor your child and the school’s progress. Are the teachers doing their best for your child? Did you choose the right school? But how do we keep an eye on things, simply and easily, without joining the PTA? Getting a clear and accurate sense of day-to-day life at the school is imperative. An easy first step is to look at information readily available about every school. Once a year, look at these figures for your school, and see what’s changed. If an area has worsened, ask your child’s teacher why, and what is being done about it? Check the school is aware of these issues, and has good steps to tackle them. Seek evidence that what is planned is being put into place. The best way to check that the school is right for your child is to ask the people who work there. Regular meetings with teachers are an effective way to monitor your child’s progress, performance and results. Take a morning off work and attend a class if that is possible. Book a short appointment with the Head teacher. Ask them what the school’s strengths and weaknesses are, the school’s priorities this year, and ask yourself would I hire this person to work in my office? These will all give you a sense of whether or not the school is delivering its best for your child. Finally, ask does my son/daughter appear to be content at school? If the answer is yes, then that’s pretty good. Ask them about their day and to show you their school work. Ask teachers to show you examples of successful work, compare it to your child’s work, and see where your child can improve. If necessary, make a plan with the teacher on how you can work together to help those improvements. As a parent, you play an important role in your child’s academic achievement. By taking steps to monitor the school and track progress helps you know the school is the right one for your child, and helps your child get the best out of this amazing time.

Holiday Review

The local area is simply an outstanding part of the world to take your holiday. Padstow is a short ferry ride from Rock with Rick Stein’s culinary empire ready for you to sample. The local beaches are simply beautiful, clean and sandy, some are a short walk from the farm itself with others a few minutes drive. This area is a Mecca for surfers with the beaches tending to be quieter than those around Newquay.

Rock, North Cornwall Sometimes when visiting a new place you are impressed with what you find. A few times you will be over the moon but just occasionally you are flabbergasted. Not just by a places’ beautiful scenic setting but also by the plain quality of the accommodation and the outstanding comfort that is available to you. Mesmear, just out side Rock in North Cornwall, is such a place. This may be holiday accommodation but it has a definite 5 star hotel feel to it.

What makes Mesmear stand out is its simple quality. This is by far the best holiday accommodation we have ever stayed in. The smaller properties are perfect for small families where as The Mill can accommodate 2 large families or gives you the option of bringing multiple generations, what better than all the family together in Cornwall for Grandad’s sixtieth birthday. Go to www.Mesmear.co.uk or telephone 01208 869 731 for more details. You will be amazed by what’s on offer and I can guarantee you the holiday of a lifetime in England’s Wild West corner.

Luca and Maya make Pumpkin Lanterns

On arrival you are greeted by the sight of three sympathetically and beautifully restored buildings. The Calf’s House and The Barn, both sleeping 4 in self catering style, and The Mill, a fantastic conversion sleeping 10 and available with a cook and housekeeper or as self catering. All are finished exquisitely, in fact if I was converting my own country pad they are finished to exactly how I would want them to be. Luxury as standard! In and around the farm are plenty of activities to keep all the family happy. A heated outdoor swimming pool that we found most refreshing after a long day, a games room with table tennis and air hockey and most importantly for the little ones, chickens ready for feeding and collecting of eggs. Fresh breakfast on tap.

Catering is just as simple with supplies available for pre-booking for delivery on arrival and a selection of freshly made ready-meals also on offer. The shepherds pie, sticky toffee pudding and flapjacks that we ordered were amazing. Local ingredients added to fantastic preparation just making them taste fabulous. If you are in The Mill and using the services of the cook all meals are freshly cooked, again using local produce and the weekly menu can be planned in discussion with Mesmear prior to your arrival. Groups, Clubs & Classes

Groups, Clubs & Classes DEVELOPING INTERESTS outside the home is rich in rewards, from new social skills to those of the particular activity. If you’d like your child to join a local class but don’t know which one, let their interests guide you. There’s no point sending a painfully shy child to a drama class if they’ll be cowering in the corner when a good drum-bashing session or IT club would bring them out of themselves more effectively. If they babbled from an early age, they may find a second language comes easily; if they’re forever throwing themselves all over the sofa, consider a gym, swimming or dance class to focus their energies; if they’ve scribbled on the walls since an early age and can’t eat their fish fingers, carrots and peas until they’re carefully rearranged on the plate, consider art and craft or pottery classes, for example.
