“Who Are The New Health Professionals?” Originally from Ireland and northern England respectively, Dr Liam McLaughlin and Dr KellyJane Thompson decided to settle with their young family in Berkshire. “Berkshire has so many areas of striking beauty and is a wonderful place to raise a family. Caversham itself has a noticeable sense of community” says Kelly.
Both Kelly and Liam completed their Chiropractic Masters degrees at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth, England. In addition to his doctor of Chiropractic, Liam has also undertaken extensive studies in functional neurology. He is now one of only a handful of Chiropractors in Europe to be a diplomat of the prestigious American Chiropractic Neurology Board.
Dr Kelly-Jane Thompson and Dr Liam McLaughlin are Chiropractors and are keen to share their particular style of Chiropractic care with the people of Berkshire. “We only use techniques that are gentle, safe and effective. We have worked in several large child and family practices and wish to create a similar practice here in Caversham” says Liam. He further adds, “Chiropractic care for everyone from babies through to adults might help them reach their full potential, something every parent and person wants”.
With over 20 years of experience between them, both come highly qualified to help you achieve your individual and your family’s health goals.
Their primary focus is on education and addressing the underlying cause of a person or child’s presenting concern. They then provide a step by step approach to assist you in what it is you would like to achieve in your health and life.
Dynamic Family Chiropractic is the name of Dr’s Liam and Kelly’s new practice. Dynamic Family Chiropractic is now open and appointments can be made by calling 0118 9462418. Look no further this Summer! Redroofs Theatre School are running fun filled themed theatre weeks this summer for young wannabe performers of all ages, with a show or presentation at the end of every single week! The courses provide a fantastic introduction to Redroofs, says course director, Sam Keston. “Experienced smiling Course Directors get the best from the children, and year after year we are told this is the best part of the summer. Children will often come alone and leave with a bundle of new buddies. Friendships are formed on the first morning, during rehearsals and by the pool. Redroofs is fun!” The school has successfully been running Summer Courses since 1964 both at Maidenhead and at Littlewick Green. The central Maidenhead site
boasts beautiful mirrored studios and a garden for breaks and the Littlewick Green school is home to its own theatre, studio spaces and grounds. The swimming pool on a hot summer’s day is particularly popular for relaxation after rehearsals. So there really is no need to queue at the airport looking for somewhere to pass the summer. You can entertain your kids from ages 5 to 16 at Redroofs - from only £140 per week. Bookings are now open for The Big Bow Wow, Let’s Put on The Wizard of Oz, Monkey Business, Let’s Put on Peter Pan, Acting for Camera and West End Musicals Week. Call 01628 674 092 or see www.redroofs.co.uk for more details.
New arrivals at Jubilee Day Nursery As the lovely long summer days have begun to arrive so too have the baby farm animals at Jubilee Day Nursery. The new baby chicks, ducklings, lambs, calves and ’kids’ have been delighting the children at the Padworth Common nursery. Pre-school children were able to nurture hen and duck eggs in incubators, watch them hatch and then feed the chicks and even help the ducklings with ’swimming lessons’. Some of the new born lambs needed
to be hand reared and the children were able to help bottle feed them, along with a Highland calf. By observing and interacting with animals the children learn valuable life skills such as responsibility, an awareness of the natural world, empathy and how to care for other creatures. If you would like your child to be part of this amazing learning experience or to find out more about Jubilee Day Nursery please call 0118 970 1600 or visit www.jubileedaynursery.co.uk e-mail: info@jubileedaynursery.co.uk Paddock View, Rectory Road, Padworth Common, Reading, RG7 4JD.

Roll up! Roll up! Libraries across the UK are getting ready to introduce children to a summertime circus spectacle....with the 2011 Summer Reading Challenge. Each year the Summer Reading Challenge to children is simple. They’re encouraged to read six or more books during the holidays with collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate or medal for every child who completes the Challenge. Children can sign up for free at their local library. This year the Summer Reading Challenge has a circus theme. Called Circus Stars, it centres around six children who have signed up for a contemporary circus skills academy. An interactive Circus Stars website (www.circus-stars. org.uk) links children with top authors and illustrators, and gives

Be Sun Aware! by Helen Long We need sunlight to help our bodies make vitamin D for strong bones, but it is easy to overdo it, particularly for children with their delicate skin. Just remember these golden rules: • Avoid long exposure between 10am until 4pm, when the sun is at its strongest. If you are out all day, then take some shade with you. • Cover up. Get your child to wear long sleeves and a hat with a brim or neck cover. • Buy small bottles of sunscreen to try out if your child hasn’t used it before. You need to test for sensitivity first. Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going out, and reapply frequently, especially after swimming. Use factor 15, or better still, factor 30. • Remember, fair haired or fair skinned children are more prone to burning. • Get them to wear sunglasses with a UV screen
to protect the eyes. • Encourage lots to drink. If your child does get sunburnt, bring them inside and soothe the skin with a cool (not cold) bath and cold compresses. Use moisturisers for several days to prevent the skin drying out. Aloe Vera is particularly cooling. Give plenty of extra drinks for a couple of days to prevent dehydration. If you are worried, then see your doctor, or go to the minor injuries unit. Things to look out for are blistered or painful skin; swelling, especially around the face; high temperature or chills; and signs of dehydration such as thirst, dry nappies, dry mouth or eyes and drowsiness. Helen Long is a private health visitor who offers home visits and workshops giving advice and support on issues such as weaning, behaviour, sleeping and potty training. Mums in Business Charvil mum Romany Greatrex is passionate about family-friendly festivals and has just launched a website Festival Kidz to inspire other parents to enjoy the festival experience. “I started Festival Kidz because I love festivals,” she says, “and because I could see how much my daughters were benefiting from going to them. I want every parent to see how much fun festivals with kids can be, and I want every child to be able to experience the incredible array of creative arts on offer.” Festival Kidz aims to provide the answers to all those hundreds of questions you have when taking children to a festival for the first time, and to create an online community where reviews,
advice, tips and experiences can be shared. There’s an interactive Festivals Map and also an online shop where you can find all sorts of useful bits of kit to help your festival go smoothly, such as personal alternatives to festival Portaloos! Romany’s two girls are aged 6 and 8 and her fledgling business suits her lifestyle
perfectly. She says, “I run Festival Kidz more or less from home so I can easily fit it around the school runs. At the moment I am doing it for the love of it, but hope that one day the business will build up to the point where I can generate a small income from it.” Visit www.festivalkidz.co.uk to find out more.
Romany and her girls
Romany recommends some unmissable festivals for families: 1. Camp Bestival Dorset, 28-31 July Camp Bestival was created with families in mind. Billed as a Festi-holiday, your festival experience will be a cross between a retro Butlins Holiday Camp with all the fun and wacky eccentricity of a major music festival. Carefully planned programming from baby yoga and pre-school favourites like Mr Tumble, skate parks and chart-topping acts, to musical legends like Primal Scream and Blondie, means that there is something here for all ages. And you can also take advantage of the Boutique Babysitting service (www.boutiquebabysitting. com) if your kids want a break from the festival action… leaving you free to catch that headline band you love! Weekend tickets start at £170 for adults and £85 for 11-17 year olds. Camp Bestival is FREE for children aged 10 and under but you must obtain a ticket. www.campbestival.net
2. Shambala Northamptonshire, 25-28 July This festival embraces families like a big warm comforting hug. Lots of provision for tiny ones: Family Yurt (for shelter, chilling out and bedtime stories with cocoa), toddler play spaces, sandpits

near the lake where you can relax with a pint on a sunny afternoon! Dedicated early years tent in the main festival with puppet shows, dance classes, workshops, and stay and play sessions. This year they have increased their activities for tweens and teens too so the whole family should have a great time. Weekend tickets are from £119 for adults, £79 for teens (ages 15-17yrs) and £29 for children (ages 5-14yrs inclusive). Under 5s are free but must be registered. www.shambalafestival.org
3. LolliBop Regent’s Park, London 5, 6 and 7 August If you and are worried about camping or think a whole weekend may be too much then LolliBop is a great introduction to the festival scene. LolliBop has all the fun and atmosphere of a major festival but it is aimed purely at under 10’s and their families. There will be some great music alongside a jam-packed programme of youngster’s favourites. Rastamouse, Baby Loves Disco, Charlie and Lola, The Science Museum, Waybuloo, Yoga Bugs, Zingzillas and the Fairy School will be there along with all sorts of other free activities

to keep little ones excited and awestruck all day long. And after a long day of non-stop fun you can go home and sleep in the comfort of your own bed – phew! Day tickets are £23 per person in advance or £30 on the gate. The price is the same for adults and children, with the exception of babies under 12 months who are free. Discounted tickets are available for families and groups. www.lollibopfestival.co.uk
4. Guilfest Guildford, 15-17 July GuilFest 2011 features 7 stages of live music with a diverse line-up that includes Razorlight, Adam Ant, Chipmunk, James Blunt, Peter Andre, N-Dubz and Roger Daltrey. GuilFest also features theatre, comedy, street performances, and a fantastic children’s area. Guilfest is an independently run festival with a very friendly atmosphere, held in the beautiful surroundings of Stoke Park. And if the big-name entertainment all gets too much you can cool off in Guildford’s lido next door! Weekend tickets start from £110 for adults, £60 for 12-15 year olds. Children aged 11 and under are free. Day tickets, camping and campervan passes also available. www.guilfest.co.uk

1
Take a CBBC tour BBC Television Centre, Wood Lane, London W12 7RJ
Take your little TV addict behind the scenes at the BBC. Local mum Kate took the CBBC interactive tour with her 8 year-old twins. “It was one of the few attractions that the grownups enjoyed as much as the kids”, Visit the Blue Peter Garden she says. “My sons got to see the Tardis, dress up as Diddy Dick and Dom and play Countdown, I got to hear some celebrity gossip and to sit in the Blue Peter Garden – a life-long ambition! Don’t go expecting to see lots of celebrities - it is a behind the scenes look but very interesting all the same, and you never know!” The BBC centre is situated a short tube journey from Paddington and opposite Westfield, an enormous shopping centre with parking and plenty of venues for lunch. Tours last around 2 hours and are designed for children aged 7-11 years, younger children are not permitted. Family tickets cost £30 and must be booked in advance at www.bbc.co.uk/tours

Summer Fun Eddie Catz Newbury

Northway House, York Rd, Newbury RG14 7NF

There are kiddie rides, padded toddler areas and dressing up for the little ones; giant playframe, multi-sports pitch, video games and reading area for the bigger ones; and a comfortable lounge with newspapers, magazines, internet kiosk and free Wi-Fi for the grownups. Mums can even treat themselves to a bit of pampering on Thursdays from 10am2pm, when The Beauty Bar is open. Alternatively normal admission prices are £3.50 for children under 90cm, £5.50 for those up to 1.55cm – don’t forget to use our Reader and 2 for 1 voucher on page 16! Offer Call 0845 201 1628 or visit www.eddiecatz.com to find out details of workshops and events running over the summer.
Go on a treasure hunt Treasure hunts are a fun way to prise the children away from their DS’s and get them exploring the local area, or even a new one, especially if you’re planning a ’staycation’ this year. Treasure Trails (www.treasure trails.co.uk) offer walking, cycling and even driving trails all over the country. Trails, cost £5 to download or £6 by post and take the form of a murder mystery, a treasure hunt or a spy mission. Families search for clues and answer questions, taking in h istoric landmarks and beautiful scenery along the way. Why not solve the murder of local rowing hero, Ezer Boatman in Henley or famous scientist Prof.I.Knowsalot in Oxford; or hunt for missing treasure near the Basingstoke canal? Even closer to home, Hunt Fun (www.huntfun.co.uk) has a similar trail in Reading, as well as Newbury and Windsor. Or try Clues To Go (www.cluestogo. co.uk) who rate their trails in terms of how cryptic they are, so you can choose one as hard or easy as you wish.

Enjoy some outdoor theatre Summer can be the perfect time to introduce your children to the delights of the theatre. Taking them to an outdoor performance, sitting on a rug and with a picnic to feast on, is an altogether more relaxing affair than the indoor version; and there are plenty of productions to enjoy locally, in the most beautiful of settings. Mapledurham House, near Snow White Reading, has a performance of Snow White on 10 August, a heartwarming tale of magic, mayhem and mystery. Watch in fancy dress and join in with the fairytale parade during the interval. Gates open at 12 noon and the performance starts at 1pm. Refreshments, wine and a bouncy castle add to the fun. Find out more or book on 0118 972 3350 or by visiting www.mapledurham.co.uk Several local National Trust properties are hosting family shows. How about taking them to see Roald Dahl’s much-loved classic Fantastic Mr. Fox at Greys Court, near Rotherfield Peppard, on 5 August or at Cliveden, near Taplow, on 26 July? Or watch Wind in the Willows at lovely Basildon Park on 23 July. Call 0844 249 1895 to book or visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk Just keep your fingers crossed for fine weather!

Cotswold Wildlife Park

Burford, Oxon, OX18 4JP
Meerkats are just one of the many animals, from the cute to the deadly, that you can discover at The Cotswold Wildlife Park near Burford. Rare Asiatic lions and leopards prowl the 160 acres of gardens and forests surrounding the Victorian manor house, whilst zebra, giraffes, rhinos and emus keep their beady eyes on the visitors. Children will love the walk-through Madagascar exhibit where they can spot playful Lemurs, hissing cockroaches and the bizarre Giant Jumping Rat, but there is a more serious side to the attraction. It plays a significant role in conservation and Even meerkats need to keep cool in the summer education - two of the species of lemur, for instance, are critically endangered and the Park is playing a key role in their preservation. There’s plenty to do for all ages in this pushchair-friendly park. Little ones can let off steam in the adventure playground, get up close to the animals in the farmyard and enjoy a ride on the narrow-gauge railway; adults will admire the beautiful gardens and Tropical House; and absolutely everyone will love the penguin’s feeding time! Reader Visit www.cotswoldwildlifepark.co.uk or call 01993 823 Offer 006 for more information. Go wild in the woods
At beautiful Burnham Beeches, between Burnham and Farnham Common in South Bucks, you’ll find lots of shady woodlands and open spaces, as well as a café, information point and toilets. There’s a mile-long Sensory Trail to follow with wooden sculptures and audio guides that will keep even reluctant walkers going, plus three self-guided nature trails of various lengths designed for families. It’s also an ideal spot for youngsters to learn to cycle with plenty of tarmaced, car-free paths. The Common near the café is huge and is great for games or just running around! Get there early as parking can get very difficult. Car park charges of £2 per day are due to be introduced in August. Download the nature trails and maps before you go from www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/burnham Swinley Forest, by the Look Out in Bracknell is another great woodland destination. Take a look at page 9 for more details.
Watch the boats go by Mill Meadows in Henley lies alongside the Thames and so offers plenty of opportunity to see some boating action. There is an enclosed play area for the under 5’s with swings and roundabouts, plus another for the more adventurous with climbing frames, zip wire and chain walks. You’re also a stone’s throw away from the River & Rowing Museum. Take a walk along the towpath to the weir or have a kick around in the large open spaces. A café offers snacks and those essential icecreams and there is a large pay-and-display car

park (£1.20 per hour, £1.50 at weekends). If you don’t mind a short walk across the meadows, park for free in the small car park at the end of Mill Lane. Sonning-on-Thames Lock is another great place to watch boats up close. It now has a pretty tea garden, open from 11am, serving highly recommended homemade cakes, teas, sandwiches and snacks. Park in Sonning and walk through the churchyard to the river or cycle along the tow-path all the way from Reading – you’ll have earned your ice-cream!

Summer Fun
Round the lake
Another great spot for walking or car-free cycling is Virginia Water, part of the Royal Landscape, a thousand-acre area of landscaped gardens, woods and lakes within Windsor Great Park. Coming from Bracknell on the A329, you can park at Blacknest car park which is often less crowded than the main car park area. It’s close to flat areas ideal for cycling practice and it’s easy to get to the lake with its ’Roman’ ruins, cascade (see below) and fishing folly. If you do head to the main Savill Gardens car park you’ll find a play area, toilets, café, shop and the Obelisk lawn with its picnic tables plus a short walk away you can even discover a 100 foot high totem pole. All areas, except the Savill Gardens, are free to enter but parking costs £4 per day at Blacknest. For shorter visits the Savill Gardens car park is free midweek for the first 90 minutes then £1.50 per hour (up to £6 for 4+ hours). Visit www.theroyallandscape.co.uk for maps, cycling routes and information on what to see and do.
Dinton Pastures Country Park, between Hurst and Winnersh, has 7 lakes to enjoy, with a free leaflet available showing several circular footpaths and trails, ranging from 1-3 miles. There’s a good play area, a little bridge over a stream, perfect for Pooh sticks, and the Dragonfly Café with lawns and a gazebo outside. The more adventurous can try orienteering (packs available from Rangers Office or café) or watersports or boat hire from the Multi-Activity Centre (0118 934 4424). Entry is free but car parking charges apply. Get into the Olympic spirit and cycle or scoot around Dorney Lake, near Windsor, the 2012 venue for rowing. It’s car-free and very, very flat - a great place to wear out all ages. Do check at www.dorneylake.com before visiting as the site can sometimes be closed for major rowing events. Other local lakes you might like to try are Hosehill Lake Nature Reserve near Theale, which has a flat mile-long circular walk, and Loddon Nature Reserve in Twyford (www. bbowt.org.uk) where the lake is shallow enough to paddle in places. Or park at Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre (www.naturediscovery.org.uk) with its free playgrounds, hands-on exhibits and café; then take one of the many trails around Thatcham Lakes.
