Pottering in Harry’s Footsteps Shona Parker explores a wizard day out in Oxford Oxford features heavily in many TV shows and movies and none brings more excitement to kids’ eyes than Harry Potter. Fortunately, Oxford Tourism has made a trip to the wizarding world possible for us muggles, through a two hour walking tour entitled: Pottering in Harry’s Footsteps, a guided walking tour of locations where memorable Harry Potter scenes were inspired or shot. The tour begins at the Oxford Tourist Information Centre and winds its way through the pretty streets and historic colleges, with a knowledgable tour guide kindly pointing out the gargoyles and grotesques, insignia and inscriptions and medieval mottos, which might have inspired JK Rowling in her books and the directors in their movies. You’ll get to stand in the very spot (pictured above) where Draco Malfoy was transformed into a ferret by Mad Eye Moody in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire; recuperate from your walking in ‘the Sanitorium’ (actually the Bodleian Library); spot an original Hippogriff perched amongst other magical creatures peering down at you; and even visit the Hogwarts Dining Hall decked out in all its glory, at Christ Church. There’s no shortage of trivia
to keep the kids riveted, and on our particular tour the younger ones were actively encouraged to show off their Harry Potter knowledge and share it with the group at large, much to their delight. The Pottering in Harry’s Footsteps tour takes place only once a month (twice a month over summer) and books out quickly. An alternative plan would be to book a private tour for a group and specify your interest in Harry Potter.

Panto first at Madejski Stadium The Madejski Stadium is a perfect location for Christmas parties and this year, for the first time ever, it will play host to that great family tradition - the Christmas Pantomime. On Sunday 4 December and Sunday 18 December Chaplin’s Gold Panto’s will present the children’s classic Beauty and the Beast. Afternoon performances will be held in the Princess Suite, with refreshments available. The fun continues afterwards in the Windsor Lounge, which will have been transformed into an indoor fair ground offering traditional fun fair stalls such as Tin can alley and Hook a Duck. Tickets for the Pantomime are great value at just £10 per person (adult and child). Fairground attractions will carry a small extra charge. Book now for this unique event on 0118 968 1333 or visit www.rbcc.org.uk to find out more. The Madejski Stadium is well known for being family friendly and in the 2010/2011 Football season won the converted ‘Family Football Club of the Year’ award, closely followed by the ‘Family Excellence award’ in 2011/12 from the Football League. The Stadium works hard to cater for all family members from Christmas office parties, through to family pantomimes and of course great value ticket prices for children as well as the Young Royals junior supporters club.

Parenting
Too Much, Too Young? Do you worry about your daughter growing up too soon? Do you want her to enjoy her childhood - but feel she is being fast-tracked by celebrity culture and the pressure to look older younger? Even though a furious debate is still raging about why it’s happening and who’s to blame, so far there has been no practical help at all for parents on how to fight back against the Lolita Effect. Instead many parents feel powerless - drowned out by the internet, retailers, the media and peer pressure. Now parenting author Tanith Carey, herself the mother of two young girls, has written the first hands-on guide for parents, called: ‘Where Has My Little Girl Gone?’ Tanith, 44, says: “Many parents feel like there’s nothing they can do - but there really are lots of practical, realistic steps you can take to protect your girls. Just knowing when to say the right things at the right time can really help inoculate girls against the worst influences of the X-rated society. It’s also more important than ever to build your daughter’s self-esteem so she is strong enough to deal with the pressure to behave older than her years. Our daughters’ childhoods deserve to be safeguarded - so they can grow into the healthy, confident women they deserve to be.” In her new book, Tanith tackles everything from Facebook to inappropriate fashion. Here are some of her tips on how to help your daughter develop a healthy body image. • When it comes to diet, the most important things are what we don’t say: Stop making food an ongoing topic of conversation in your household. Even
if you think you are spreading healthy eating messages, you are making food a big issue. Instead without a fuss or fanfare, quietly make sure a good range of nutritious good food is available in your home. Keep in mind that there are no ‘bad’ foods. What is bad is when we don’t eat them in a balanced way. The best thing you can do for your daughter is to make eating normally no big deal, just a part of life. • Never mention the word ‘diet’: Overhearing endless conversation with your friends about the latest diet regime can make girls think it’s a woman’s lot to starve herself. If it’s brought up by other adults in front of your daughter, quickly and quietly change the subject. • Get girls involved in cooking: Get girls back in touch with food and where it comes from and how it is made. Make mealtimes a stress-free family occasion by focussing on companionship and conversation, not who’s eating what. • Don’t use food to feed your emotions: Don’t express regret or guilt over food. How many of us have groaned after dinner, “I wish I hadn’t eaten that” or “I deserve a treat after the day I’ve had.” Don’t talk about ‘fat days’. Stop sending the message that food is something to feel guilty about.

Families Review by Belinda Maunsell
Where has my Little Girl Gone? By Tanith Carey (Lion Hudson £7.99 ISBN: 9780745955421, available online and from all good bookshops, priced £7.99) I devoured this book in just a day. With a three year old daughter I’m anxious to preserve her childhood for as long as I can and although I’m not easily scared, I am aware that there will come a time when outside influences will have a stronger pull than mummy. This book is an absolute must for anyone with a daughter and it wouldn’t be a bad idea to read it if you have boys too. It’s all too easy to scaremonger – and there’s been plenty of that in the media of late – but Tanith Carey writes with clarity and intelligence to offer what all parents want – practical advice. Tanith identifies the ‘tween years’ of 7-12 as the root of childhood where girls are starting to define themselves as separate from their parents. It is during this time that they become more curious about the world about them and form the foundations of self-image and self-esteem. She then gives us lots of sensible ways we can steer our girls in the right direction so that they don’t grow up feeling they must plaster themselves in make-up to feel good about themselves or starve themselves to be stick-thin and therefore ‘acceptable’ to their peers. It’s not easy though – because the first step we have to take is to look very carefully at ourselves. Using expressions such as ‘having a fat day’ or constantly putting yourself down as a woman is doing just as much damage as X-rated pop videos and ‘sexy’ children’s clothes – and the government can’t legislate against that. I particularly found the chapter about online safety useful (useful for parents of boys too) and also the great advice on how to steer girls away from too much make-up – 17 tips on just that alone. This is a great manual for parents of girls of all ages and comes highly recommended. Families Rating *****

Setting achievable goals for a more successful you September is a good time for new beginnings. Many of you will be waving your youngest off to school or nursery for the first time and can look forward to devoting a little time to fresh challenges. Personal development coach Julie Hoather of JH-Coaching gives us some tips for setting and achieving these new goals. • The path to success is not about what you want, but how you approach it. Phrase your goals in such a way that they are attractive and achievable. The answer is to think really carefully before making the commitment. • Have as clear an idea as possible about what you want, develop a rich exciting image, and see yourself achieving this new behaviour. • State your intention in the positive: making your language more positive increases your chances of success, so “I want to stop smoking” implies restriction, try “I want to be healthier”. • What steps do you need to take to achieve this goal, have you been realistic, can you maintain this commitment: write a list of pros and cons. • How will you know when you have it? What will you see, hear, and feel? This will help you to develop your more attractive mental image and help to encourage you. • When do you want it? Sometimes this new behaviour may be a hindrance, think carefully about the ramifications and boundaries you want to place on it: “I want to be more successful” this may interfere with your home life, be careful what you wish for! • Is it worth the time, effort and financial costs: again, write a list and work through the potential problems. • Most importantly, be kind to yourself; if you find yourself slipping and losing sight of your good intentions just treat it as a learning experience. Learn from it and start again, don’t dwell on it, just move on. JH-Coaching has a special September offer with 3 sessions for £150, including a free initial telephone consultation. Get help with goal setting, confidence building and finding what you really want! To contact Julie email jules@JH-Coaching.co.uk or find out more at www.JH-Coaching.co.uk Facebook: JH-Coaching or Twitter @JulesHoather.

Family Life
By Jez Rose
Woofs and Growls Dogs, much like children, don’t come with an instruction manual and more’s the pity! I see people all the time enforcing restriction, cuddles or petting on their dogs, despite the dog telling them that they are not comfortable with it. It is simple and enjoyable to have a safe and fun relationship with your dog but they do have teeth and if forced to use them, they will. The use of their teeth is both predictable and preventable. Dogs don’t just bite without reason, so it’s important that adults as well as children, learn how to greet dogs properly and at the same time, that dogs learn how to be friendly around people – especially children. Many dogs find children a bit spooky. Dogs communicate through complex, co-ordinated body movements, yet children are bundles of energy and uncoordinated movement who often run headfirst towards dogs. They don’t see the dog offering very loud signs, in dog language, telling the child that they don’t feel comfortable with their rather clumsy, energetic approach. So here’s my quick guide on how to ensure a safe and enjoyable relationship with your dog: 1. Respect the dog’s space. Tell children not to approach the dog – allow the dog to come to them. When the dog does approach, keep quiet and calm. 2. Walk calmly and quietly when the dog is around: loud noises and lots of movement may scare the dog or over excite them. 3. Never go near to or disturb a dog when they are sleeping or eating. 4. Never, ever, under any circumstances leave children and dogs unattended – no matter how safe you believe the dog is. Both are naturally inquisitive, however, neither speak the same language and children aren’t taught what to look for in a dog’s body language; ways that show it may be upset, fearful or anxious: three things that often precede a dog bite. 5. Learn to “speak dog”. With even a very basic understanding of how dogs communicate, we can better understand them and adjust our behaviour accordingly.
When a dog’s hackles are raised (the hair at the scruff of their neck and along their back stands on end), it is commonly misconceived that this is aggression. It is actually caused by fear: the dog is scared but makes itself look scary in hope the scary thing will go away. I always aim to act before the dog shows fear or growls, as there are plenty of signals we can pick up on before it gets to this stage. Have you ever noticed your dog yawning when it isn’t tired, panting when it isn’t particularly hot, licking its’ lips, narrowing its eyes or even turning its head away or lowering its head when you approach it, attempt to stroke or cuddle it? These are all what are commonly known as calming signals; subtle gestures the dog makes to indicate that it isn’t comfortable as a response to stress. The best way to respond to these is to stop what you are doing, or were about to do with the dog or change the environment. For example, if you have some of your children’s friends over and they are all happily playing but you notice that the dog is panting and turning its head even though it isn’t a hot day, take the dog to a safe zone where the children are not allowed to disturb it and ask the children to respect the dog’s space and needs. Many dog owners are guilty of forgetting that, although domesticated, dogs are animals none the less. If you feed your dog in a bowl, I strongly recommend that you put the bowl into early retirement: they make quirky birdbaths and some plants really thrive in them! Start feeding your dog by hand: all the adults in the house should feed the dog its’ everyday food but you
MEADOWBROOK MONTESSORI SCHOOL
’Excellence in Education’
should reserve extra special things like bacon fat, cooked chicken or liver treats for children to give the dog under adult supervision. If your dog doesn’t have gentle jaws, the children can simply toss the food onto the floor in front of the dog. The dog learns very quickly that these small bundles of energy and movement are actually pretty good to have around as they deliver the best food, therefore, creating a positive association with them. A safe environment, quality teaching and caring adults are the top things parents look for in a school. The Ridgeway Primary School, on the Reading/ Wokingham border, has all these and more! Often described as “Reading’s best kept secret”, this one-form entry primary school has one of the best views in Reading from its hilltop location. Set in generous grounds and surrounded by woodland, The Ridgeway Primary School has been educating pupils since 1929, but things have certainly moved with the times. Every classroom is equipped with the latest technology and, as anyone who saw its Drama Club’s production of Greek mini tragedies at the Big Art Picnic will testify, the performing arts have received a boost from the recent investment in lights and sound equipment. Things are set to go from Greek to Roman in the Autumn Term, when work begins on the Amphitheatre. It’s part of an exciting development program to use the extensive grounds for outdoor learning. The chicken mini enterprise is already producing eggs and a pond and vegetable plots are due in the near future. The new Head Teacher and Senior Leaders are committed to their ambition of making this up and coming school ‘Outstanding’ by its next Ofsted inspection. Wokingham parents can be assured too that, with recent council changes to admission policies, their children can enjoy the benefits of The Ridgeway and still be eligible for places at Maiden Erlegh and Bulmershe. Through-Schools are Good for your Family Starting at a new nursery or school is an exciting time for your child, but it can also be daunting. Wouldn’t it be great if you could alleviate that anxiety for your child, giving them the confidence to grasp fresh opportunities without worrying? A through-school does just that. How? Through: • the familiarity of the wider environment, the buildings and the staff; no need to ‘settle in’. • internal communication and a joined-up management style; your child’s character, abilities and strengths are supported by existing understanding across the staff. • the benefit of a single school run, whatever the age of the children; all departments are on a single campus. • the emotional security of access to other family members within the same school. • unusual and exciting extra-curricular activities which offer interesting opportunities. • ‘big school’ facilities complemented by ‘small school’ numbers within the classroom; your child will be nurtured. Why not explore the benefits of a through-school education for your child at Bearwood College? See www.bearwoodcollege.co.uk or call 0118 974 8300 to arrange your visit.
ACS Egham International School ACS Egham is one of only a handful of schools in the UK authorised to offer all three International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes. Their IB Primary Years Programme covers the ages of 3-11; the IB Middle Years Programme the years from 11 to 16; and the more familiar IB Diploma Programme is for 16 to18 year-olds. Located in Egham, Surrey, the school takes around 600 students, of all nationalities. It is set on a beautiful 20 acre campus with excellent facilities. A dedicated IB Diploma Centre has just been completed and a state-of-the-art sports facility is due to open next summer. To find out more call 01784 430 611 or visit www.acs-schools.com
St. Edward’s Prep School, Reading St Edward’s School is a small independent day preparatory school for boys aged 4-13, founded in 1947. With specialist subject teachers and class sizes between 12 and 18 it offers the very best possible start to children’s education. St. Edward’s promotes sound and clearly defined moral values in a learning environment where boys work together enjoying the challenge and rigor of quality teaching. Each child is treated as an individual and strives to achieve their potential whether in academia, sports or the arts. The individual attention to each pupil combined with the ‘excellent’ level of pastoral care at St. Edward’s enables each boy to be safe, happy and free to enjoy his education. Small classes mean that each boy is helped to learn effectively, all abilities are nurtured and challenged ensuring pupils move on quickly. St. Edward’s has an enviable record of strong results and successful senior school entry at 11 or 13, including frequent scholarships. To find out more visit www.stedwards.org.uk, or see the school in action at the Open Day on Friday 7 October between 9 and 11am.
State School Admissions If your child was born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008 you will soon need to apply for a primary school place for them. Year 6 children will have to decide on a secondary school even sooner. Applications for a state school place for your child must be made to your local authority, either online or by paper application form. Each authority produces an admissions guide containing information about how and when to apply. It also has details of all the state schools in the area including admissions policies, catchment areas and dates when you can visit the schools. You can apply for schools outside your area but still need to do this through your home authority.
Key dates are: Secondary School open days/evenings – throughout Sept/early Oct Deadline for applying to Primary School - 15 January 2012 Deadline for applying to Secondary School - 31 October 2011 NB these dates can vary slightly so check with your local authority as late applications may mean you miss out on your school of choice.

Education starts at home Parents can have a big impact on their child’s education. Elisabeth Dolton explains why and gives us a few simple activities to try at home to help build on what is learnt in the classroom. Why bother... Most of us want our children to do well at school and a parent’s role in that success cannot be underestimated. Studies in Britain have shown that children who are supported by their families with homework are likely to perform significantly better in academic examinations at 16 years old and beyond than those who do not. Recent reports show boys are still having difficulties with literacy (reading, writing or spelling), and girls having difficulties with numeracy, despite improvements in primary school results. Even the best and brightest teachers can be hard pressed to address the individual needs of every child, especially in a crowded classroom. And what if your child shows a particular interest or aptitude towards a certain topic? A love of physics can start at any age. Similarly, if your child finds a topic difficult, your interest as a parent will help, no matter how well or how fast your child understands what they are being taught. Parents’ small actions can plug these gaps, support children and really boost their development.
What activities can be taken? Activities that involve reading, listening, writing, number awareness, sequencing, counting and learning to become aware of the world that surrounds them are perfect. They will help encourage a love and understanding of language, maths and science which are basic tools to boost any child’s education. • Keep a library – A few books placed in reach of your children to pick up any time for browsing or talking about. A recent study conducted in the US found that children
coming from a “bookish home” remained in education for around three years longer than young people born into families with empty bookshelves. • Read to your children - Sharing stories and reading together are vital to the development of a child’s literacy skills. Just ten minutes at the start or end of the day will be enough to help them to acquire the skills they need to develop as a reader. • Download free games, activities, and worksheets online – There are many websites offering free activities that encourage basic skill development for children and keep it fun. • Get number crunching – Talk about numbers and show them how useful numbers are in almost everything we do. Measure their height and work out how much they have grown, spot speed signs and funny number plates, say the time out loud and how long before the next stop, compare the prices of vegetables in the supermarket and how much money you will need to pay, how long tea
will take to cook, how much milk you pour on your cornflakes, etc. • Problem solving – Encourage your children to think things through and work things out for themselves. Ask them why they think metal goes rusty, why the sky is grey, why the Police car makes a noise, etc. Point out things that are different to home buildings, accents, clothes, food, and customs. Experts suggest giving your child a simple map of where they are going, also following a recipe together are great techniques to boost concentration. • Keep talking - New experiences and discoveries are always stimulating, so encourage your child to try new things. Look for opportunities to talk to your child about their day - children enjoy sharing what they are learning. • Put a pen in their hands - Help them develop their handwriting skills by writing words and sentences for them to copy. Point out examples of lovely handwriting and pictures when you see them, encourage them to ‘sign’ birthday and Christmas cards to their friends, and always get them to sign their own artwork. Overall, making sure your activities with them are fun will make a real difference. Children thrive on encouragement, someone who will listen to them when they are struggling as well as achieving. Giving them a little personal attention that they can’t get in the classroom, all add up to fun learning for your child and peace of mind for you that they are achieving the best they can.

Do you say ‘SSSS’ or ‘SUH’ for snake? Tami Reis-Frankfort, reading specialist and director of Phonic Books, explains why Synthetic Phonics is a better way to pronounce sounds. “One does not say ‘suh’ Mummy! Miss Kay says it should be ‘SSSSS’. We must say it properly.” Another parent stands corrected. This conversation is taking place all over the UK. Children are learning to read with Synthetic Phonics and learning a new way of saying the letter sounds. Whether learning through Jolly Phonics, Letters and Sounds (the DFE programme), or other phonic programmes, a whole new generation is growing up on ‘mmmm’ and ‘nnnnn’ and ‘ssssss’. Children are learning ‘pure sounds’ or ‘precise pronunciation’. This may leave parents somewhat bewildered as they were not taught to read in this way. It is a fact: saying separate sounds in words does not come naturally to us. But in any classroom today you will hear a funny ‘robot talk’: ‘c’ ‘a’ ‘t’ for cat and ‘d’ ‘o’ ‘g’ for dog etc.
So why are teachers insisting on teaching the ‘precise pronunciation’ of the sounds of the alphabet? Why is this important? In Synthetic Phonics the letters on the page prompt sounds
represent those sounds. Again, if they pronounce them inaccurately they are likely to misspell them. A classic example is when a child spells the word ‘jumper’ as ‘jump’. If they pronounce the letter ‘p’ as ‘puh’ they may think they don’t need to add the ‘er’ at the end of the word. So precise pronunciation is at the very core of Synthetic Phonics.
How can parents get to learn precise pronunciation?
which are then pushed or ‘blended’ together. In order to recognise a word when you are ‘blending’ sounds together, you need to hear them as they appear in the word. Take the word ‘mat’: the sounds in the word are not ‘muh’ ‘a’ tuh’. If you push the sounds ‘mu’ ‘a’ ‘tuh’ together - you get ‘muhatuh’ (not ‘mat’). The sounds in the words are ‘mmmm’ ‘aaaa’ ‘t’. We need to say the sounds precisely to recognise the word ‘mat’. The reverse process happens when children are taught to spell. First they need to ‘segment’ (isolate) the sounds in the word and write letters that

Socialising Claire, mother of four under 10 year-olds, believes it is important for children to make new friends outside school: “It really helps them stand on their own and develop their confidence. There isn’t that pecking order thing that you have in the playground. It’s a chance to break out of whatever mould you’ve been cast in”. 3. French made easy My eldest son really struggled when he started French lessons - at the grand old age of 11. How much easier it would have been for him to have discovered the language earlier in his life, at an age when linguistic skills develop effortlessly. Alouette, French classes for 3 to 6 year olds, can give your child just this opportunity. Alouette’s teacher, Liz Lavender, is a native French speaker from Paris and has worked as a language expert for over ten years. She told us “up until the age of 6, children’s audio-vocal muscles are forming, and acquire the intonation, sounds and accent of another language naturally without any effort.” Parents join in the classes so it’s an enjoyable learning experience for all the family. Groups are kept small, no more than 8 children, and learn using actions, games, music and fun! Classes are held at St Paul’s Parish Rooms, Reading Road, Wokingham, RG41 1EH on Tuesdays at 4.15-5pm with new classes on Saturdays at 11-11.45am. Sessions cost only £5.50, payable termly. To find out more call Liz on 07759 812 016 or email alouetteclub@yahoo.com
