Welcome

Clothes by tesco.com

We’re absolutely refusing to get all sad this year as the summer ends, we resume our routines and the winter starts to move in on us. After all we’ve all come back from the holidays energised by all that rest, family fun and sunshine – right? Right! See page 15 for one way to channel that energy, have a clear out and sell your unwanted stuff to good, local homes, while a magical machine cleans your floors while you get on with life. We meet an inspirational head teacher who tells us all about his great school in Twickenham and gives us some tips on school selection if that’s on your to-do list this year (page 8). Turn to page 10 for our annual bumper clubs and classes feature so that your children can start out on some new adventures in a fun settling. Finally, our What’s On pages (starting page 21) have masses of local listings but don’t forget to Follow and Like us on Twitter and Facebook for more events as we uncover them throughout the autumn.

For many years, St James Senior Boys, now at Ashford, has asked the question, what kind of man do you want your son to be? At a time when division is rife, economic hardship is widespread and when uncertainty in all walks of life has become the norm, it is clear that future leaders need to be people of immense inner strength, considerable sensitivity and able to make good things happen for the benefit of all. St James offers a distinctive education, uniting a philosophic approach to the development of essential life skills with academic excellence. The aim is to allow a boy to grow gracefully into a man of strength and good character, achieving more than he thinks is possible. They say, ‘Our philosophy is based on the simple notion that behind the multifarious differences of each individual is a conscious, intelligent and loving spirit which we all share. This sense of Oneness unites the whole human family. So it is that our approach in the

25/08/2011 20:00 14/6/11 15:43:32

classroom begins with the idea that within every boy is a brilliance and perfection waiting to be uncovered. We do not select our pupils solely on their academic ability; for us, their strength of character and future potential are of equal significance. Over the past five years we have secured a 100% pass rate in both GCSE and A level exams with more than 95% of pupils achieving the top grades. In this process, pastoral care is a central feature, ensuring that boys become men who are of use in the world, with self-discipline and confidence’. The St James move to the wonderful site at Ashford, TW15 provides an unequalled educational impulse, and through that, an education for life. See page 9 for details of Open days and tours. congratulations to Gymboree surbiton At the recent national What’s On 4 Junior 2011 awards Gymboree Surbiton won National acclaim again this year. Typing’s cool run touch typing clubs in a number of local schools and have a new club open to adults and children at New Malden library on Mondays between 5 and 6pm. The club will start on Monday 12th September and will initially run for five weeks. The cost is £35 for the five hourly sessions. They tell us that their touch-typing programme is excellent for challenging the brightest children, whilst providing extra help for special needs children. The inclusive design means all children can use the same programme and work at the same time, but at their own pace. It has a special needs friendly design, including a multi-sensory approach, strong

colour coding, visually simple and uncluttered presentation style, both spoken and written instructions, a choice of background screen colours and a highly structured content. The programme uses a unique colour coding system to build learning quickly and efficiently. Learning key and finger relationships as rapidly as possible is their main aim as typing tutors. It consists of a combination of short, motivating lessons and arcade-style games to encourage painless practice. There are eight lessons (each with three or four sections) and five games. Individual key accuracy is displayed after each lesson to identify any problem areas. Contact them on 020 8549 2173 or 020 8547 0821.

home grown at ham

Ham House’s walled kitchen garden is the venue for a lively autumnal foray into the world of fruit and vegetable self-sufficiency. Home Grown at Ham provides an introduction for all ages into the fun, satisfaction and benefits to be had from eating and growing local seasonal produce. Tours of the kitchen garden look at the huge variety of weird and wonderful 17th century heritage varieties on display, with advice on saving and propagating precious seed, and extending the produce period by growing winter hardy vegetables. Ham’s new winter vegetable plot is the place for inspiration, containing everything from overwintering broad beans, kale and cabbage, to chicory and winter salads such claytonia, also known as winter purslane – an attractive winter crop which is rich in vitamin C. Children can try their hands at the traditional game of apple bobbing or Ham’s unique ‘Healthy Vegetable Olympics’, which last year saw parsnip ‘javelins’ being hurled and beetroot ‘boules’ being rolled! Herb and flower posy workshops teach you traditional craft of making tussie-mussie nosegays, which they can take home, whilst Ham’s colourful new pumpkin patch, brimming with orange and yellow fruits, is ready to be explored. Ham’s catering staff are rustling up some delicious recipes in the grounds using the garden’s own produce, whilst a beekeeping expert chats about the benefits of having bees in the garden. Honey lovers can pop into Ham’s shop to purchase locally produced honey from Twickenham Apiary. The gardens are also hosting a farmers’ market, with local food producers and suppliers selling a delicious selection of fresh foods. Visitors can find out about local projects and campaigns from food groups as well as horticultural and allotment societies. Home Grown at Ham is on 11th September, 11am to 4.30pm. back to school

School success starts at home ELISABETH DOLTON explains how home life can have a massive impact on your children’s education once they start school.

And what if your child shows a particular interest or aptitude towards a certain topic? A love of physics can start at any age. Similarly, if your child finds a topic difficult, your interest as a parent will help, no matter how well or how fast your child understands what they are being taught. Parents’ small actions can plug these gaps, support children and really boost their development.

WhAt Activities?

Did you know that just by keeping books in your home can significantly increase your children’s likelihood of going to university and that’s irrespective of background, size of family, where they live, parents’ occupation or any other social factor? Further research has also shown that the biggest impact on a child’s educational development is reading to them from a very early age. So if your child is starting school for the first time this year, or they are already progressing rapidly through the school years, undertaking a few small activities at home can make a huge difference to the development and education of children and powerfully build on the learning they receive from school.

WhY Bother?

Activities that involve reading, listening, writing, number awareness, sequencing, counting and learning to become aware of the world that surrounds them are perfect. They will help encourage a love and understanding of language, maths and science which are basic tools to boost any child’s education.  Keep a library A few books placed in reach of your children to pick up any time for browsing or talking about. A recent study conducted in the US found that children coming from a ‘bookish home’ remained in education for around three years longer than young people born into families with empty bookshelves.  read to your children Sharing stories and reading together are vital to the development of a child’s literacy skills. Just ten minutes at the start or end of the day will be enough to help them to acquire the skills they need to develop as a reader.

 download free games, activities, and worksheets online There are many

grown, spot speed signs and funny number plates, say the time out loud and how long before the next stop, compare the prices of vegetables in the supermarket and how much money you will need to pay, how long tea will take to cook, how much milk you pour on your cornflakes, etc.  Problem solving Encourage your children to think things through and work things out for themselves. Ask them why they think metal goes rusty, why the sky is grey, why the police car makes a noise, etc. Point out things that are different to home buildings, accents, clothes, food and customs. Experts suggest giving your child a simple map of where they are going, also following a recipe together are great techniques to boost concentration.  Keep talking New experiences and discoveries are always stimulating, so encourage your child to try new things. Look for opportunities to talk to your child about their day - children enjoy sharing what they are learning.  Put a pen in their hands Help them develop their handwriting skills by writing words and sentences for them to copy. Point out examples of lovely handwriting and pictures when you see them, encourage them to ‘sign’ birthday and Christmas cards to their friends, and always get them to sign their own artwork. Making sure your activities are fun will make a real difference. Children thrive on encouragement, someone who will listen to them when they are struggling as well as achieving. Giving them a little personal attention that they can’t get in the classroom, all add up to fun learning for your child and peace of mind for you that they are achieving the best they can.

Most of us want our children to do well at websites offering free activities that encourage school and a parent’s role in that success basic skill development and keep it fun. cannot be underestimated. Studies in Britain  Get number crunching Talk about have shown that children who are supported numbers and show them how useful numbers by their families with homework are likely are in almost everything we do. Measure their to perform significantly better in academic height and work out how much they have examinations at 16 years old and beyond than those who do not. Recent reports show boys great websites for information, tips and free worksheets are still having difficulties with literacy and 1 www.bbc.co.uk/schools/parents/resources girls having difficulties with numeracy, despite 2 www.handwritingforkids.com improvements in primary school results. back to school

Meet the Head We chatted to David Alexander, Headmaster of Newland House School in Twickenham, as he reflected on his first year in this successful local school. When we caught up with David Alexander, it was the very last day of the summer term so a trace of fatigue would have been totally understandable after a hectic academic year – not a bit of it! An experienced leader in his 3rd headship, he was busting with energy as he told us about the many strengths of Newland House School and his plans for its future. The school takes boys and girls from 4 years and they stay until 13 years for boys and 11 years for girls. From there pupils move on to the most prestigious local secondary schools, such as St Paul’s, Hampton, Lady Eleanor Holles and Surbiton High, many with scholarships. David is justifiably proud of the school’s academic record, especially as it is non-selective at entry. ‘Parents choose us because they have a feeling of where they want their children to go in the future’, he told us. But don’t imagine for a minute that the

VIA FIRMA AD FIRMIORA

school’s key to such success is through a blinkered and rigorous Three Rs regime. As David says, ‘It’s all about the journey to those schools … education is about exposing children to lots and lots of activities’. For this reason, Newland House School does not neglect out-of-classroom activities. It promotes netball, rugby and cricket and is even installing a climbing wall. As well as sport, David is also proud of the school’s Design and Technology Department, which he believes to be the best in the country. Their achievements speak for themselves with the school consistently performing well in national competitions such as the recent Shell Eco Marathon where pupils designed a green car. This head teacher is able to demonstrate to the school community his belief in wider challenges outside the classroom by his ‘other job’ commanding a gliding squadron. With a background in music, he has

taken on the contrasting challenge of a commercial pilot’s licence and believes the process of flying and training with the RAF has taught him a great deal. He told us, ‘It’s all about leadership and basic skills. The RAF is very good at teaching how to transfer skills and it’s all very structured and ordered.’ As he looks back on the last year, David has many reasons to feel proud of his school and its wider community. It is extremely important to him that parents are engaged, ‘We are a very caring, family-based school with parents who want to get the best out of the school’. However, there’s no hint of complacency and he aims to build on this relationship, with plans to develop even more engagement and openness with parents. Newland House is already making ambitious plans for the future with a ‘crazy idea’ which David has come up with to buy a boat and to use it as a floating classroom. As he spoke about the possibilities, David became increasingly enthused, ‘It makes great sense as we are so close to the river and the boat could be used to teach pupils to work as a team, to work on environmental projects, go on expeditions and have overnight stays’. He readily admits that this exciting plan could take two to three years to develop, fund and come to fruition. Something tells us that with David’s drive, energy, creative thinking and leadership at the helm, his plans for Newland House School will soon be afloat.

david’s tips

At a time when many readers will be thinking about the school selection process for 2012 we couldn’t resist asking David for a few pointers. As a dynamic head at a thriving local school, who better to offer a few guidelines? Here are his thoughts:

Don’t be over anxious: with a wealth of great schools in the area, no parent will go wrong with any choice they make.

Think hard about the co-ed versus single-sex pros and cons. David is an advocate of co-education at primary level but understands the arguments I favour of single-sex education in a secondary setting.

Be sure to chat to the head. ‘Nobody ever chooses a school because of good governors or a good bursar’, he told us. You have to feel comfortable with the head if you are considering a school.

Look at the children. Do they seem engaged? Do they welcome guests to their school? Are they happy? David believes that happy children achieve more.

School check up Follow ELIZABETH DOLTON’S simple tips on monitoring the progress of your child and the school.

etc) and see what’s changed. If an area seems to be in decline you need to find out why and what is being done about it. Seek evidence that what is planned is being put into place, and, more importantly, that these actions are making a difference to the education of the pupils. Remember, school is not just about learning and passing exams. There are a whole range of good things about being at school like building friendships, exploring new activities and learning to get on with people of all backgrounds, so it’s important

extra

Finally, the most important thing to ask is does my son/ daughter appear to be content at school? If the answer is yes, then they are likely to be learning which is pretty good. Ask them about their day – what did you do in Maths today? Be specific in what you ask them and vary your topic, PE the next time, English the next. Ask your children to show you their schoolwork, check out their marks and teacher’s comments. Do they provide your child with the ammunition to improve? Above all, now that the academic year has begun, don’t sit back - you play an important role in your child’s academic achievement. Your interest in their school helps your child get the best out of this amazing time.

So you have been through the trauma of selection and your child is now settling into their new school. Your job is done, you can sit back and relax, safe in the knowledge that they are in that great educational establishment you checked out so carefully a year ago ... or maybe not? Right now is actually the time to start thinking about how to monitor your child and the school’s progress. Once a year, look at the published figures for your school (number of applications, test and exam results, attendance levels,

to monitor other factors. The ethos and culture of a school will tell you a lot about what it is trying to achieve and revisit some of the criteria you used when you chose this school in the first place. Of course the best way to check that the school is right for your child is to ask the people who work there. Make the most of parent’s evenings: ask for detailed information on your child’s performance, results and overall observations. Check out pupils’ behaviour and how is it dealt with. If you have concerns, book a short appointment with the head of year/house or even head teacher. Ask them what the school’s strengths and weaknesses are and the school’s priorities this year?

spectacular summer clubs and classes Enrol your child in out of school activities to give your child a chance to shine, writes ROBINA COWAN.

The

fun begins

With the constant wail that schools focus on teaching children to pass tests, organizing some extra-curricular clubs allows your child to have fun outside the classroom. Hobbies lead to new friends, they reveal hidden talents and develop skills that could become a real advantage one day. Everyone is good at something, and finding it is a huge confidence booster. Just because you drop the ball in PE doesn’t mean you wouldn’t be great at swimming or dancing; the child who isn’t interested in the bright lights can still shine in an arts class or on the sports field. There really is plenty of variety to choose from, as we’ve been finding out. Try our advertisers - they’re here because they want you to know about them and will be happy to answer any questions you might have. For more information all year round, children’s activities are also listed on our website directory at www.familiesonline.co.uk/locations/upon-thames/directory PrActicAL coNsiderAtioNs

While it might seem tempting to guide your child to musical, sporting and artistic genius outside the classroom, they need time for just ‘chilling’ too. Liz Baker is a parent, and also a school teacher. In her view: ‘there is no point in enrolling in every class going. Don’t assume your child will get an academic head start. They will only benefit academically when they are ready, and not before. Remember children get exhausted too - give them time to themselves. Children should choose and be given a taste of each activity before deciding if he or she wants to commit to it long-term - there’s no gain in putting your child under pressure.’ think ahead. You may need to put your child’s name on a waiting list, particularly for more popular classes stay local. Walking distance is best, otherwise getting there and back becomes another chore Great staff. The best leaders are enthusiastic, skilled, trained, and have eyes in the back of their heads to spot children who need a little more encouragement, particularly when they are new and might feel shy Additional costs. Will you need specialist clothes or equipment? Does the club offer these second-hand? Is there an annual subscription or insurance charge? How much are exam fees? Look-see. Many clubs offer a free trial class, especially if they run on a term basis. If that’s 10

not possible, ask to pay weekly for the first two sessions Give it time. Some children are prone to dropping out. Unless you think they are completely and utterly unsuited to the activity, or really, really hate it, stick it out for at least a couple of terms.

MUsic

Music gives amazing educational and developmental benefits. From just three months, babies actively enjoy music groups, and as soon as they can shake a rattle, they can join in too. Belting out a song teaches rhythm and helps develop speech. Those hand actions you do when you sing nursery rhymes? They boost spatial reasoning, which will later be useful in maths and science. Playing an instrument is great for dexterity and co-ordination. It teaches teamwork and responsibility, and improves concentration and memory. At six or seven, children night start with a recorder, keyboard or violin. From eight, guitar is an option. Brass and wind instruments are best left to older children, when children can join their school band or orchestra.

Featured class - Noah’s Ark Music Club This Molesey-based pre-school music group was established in 1998 by Becky Mead, Music Graduate and experienced music teacher.

www.familiesonline.co.uk/locations/upon-thames

The Noah’s Ark Music Club philosophy is simple: great singing, dancing, playing instruments, playing musical games and learning through musical fun, fun, fun! Becky’s classes involve many elements such as some use of basic Makaton (baby signing), pitch and rhythm, enjoyment of music in many forms, dance, play, lots of songs both traditional and modern, puppets, guitar, drums, maracas, bells, step chimes, cymbals and loads more. Through these classes your child will be encouraged to develop musical skills and awareness, confidence, teamwork skills, listening and concentration. Music helps to develop phonetic awareness which in turn supports language and literacy. It is closely linked to mathematical thinking and physical co-ordination. Noah’s Ark Music Club has been highly recommended by lots of local mums over the years and is known for its unique approach. Classes are kept small (no more than 12 in each session), and Becky tells us they are all a very friendly bunch! Weekly classes for 1 and 2 year olds and 3 and 4 year olds. FREE TRIAL AVAILABLE. Noah’s Ark Music Club also runs regular holiday music and craft workshops for children between 3 and 5 years. Becky also teaches private piano and flute lessons to children and adults – daytime slots available and a waiting list for evening slots. LANGUAGes

With over 60 different languages now spoken in schools across the UK, we are bringing up our children in a truly multi-cultural society. Experts agree that the earlier a child starts learning other languages, the better. Children are extremely receptive to new ideas and information, especially when they’re having fun. Pre-school language classes build confidence and familiarity on an instinctive level, typically through songs, dances and simple games. School-age children should be more aware of grammar and syntax, and supplementing school lessons with a language club will pay dividends - boosting their confidence, vocabulary and appreciation of different cultures.

Regular exercise is hugely beneficial to long-term health and fitness. It’s easy to see the value of activities that help children burn off some energy at the end of the school day, or build skills in sports which they already enjoy at school. Even the tiniest children can benefit from the social side of playing team games, or the fun element of learning a ‘solo’ sport like trampolining, tennis or diving. When children are engaged, they pay more attention - 61% of young people claim to be better behaved in PE than other lessons, in most cases simply because they enjoy it more. This is particularly true amongst boys, and children who admit to misbehaving at school - of whom 73% claim to be better behaved in PE lessons.

Theatre arts

‘I like acting and pretending to be someone else and learning songs and dances with my friends’, says five year-old William, who has attended a children’s performing arts club for nearly a year. For boosting the confidence of shy or reserved children, drama and dance can’t be beaten. Skills that a child learns through performing arts classes will stand them in good stead throughout their lives - twenty years down the line, they’ll thank you when it comes to addressing a meeting room or chairing a conference. Performing arts classes are not only for children with starry aspirations. Theatre arts bring literature to life and build self-confidence.

Learning to perform in front of an audience can help children with public speaking; role playing and improvisation give their minds freedom to develop while developing empathy for other people’s feelings.

Parents choose out of school academic subjects for their children for a host of reasons - perhaps your little one excels in maths and you want to give them more challenging and stimulating tuition - or maybe you simply want to supplement what is being taught at school by introducing the skills needed for independent study and fluency in the subject? Whatever your reason, group or individual tuition can make a huge difference to your child’s progress and greatly enhance their school-based studies. More and more parents, particularly in London, are hiring private tutors to give their child the edge when it comes to achieving in class, or practicing and preparing for exams. If your child is bringing home good school reports and is happy and settled, there’s no need; however there’s no longer any stigma in finding extra help if you want to, and the best classes are fun as well as educational.

Socialising - Claire, mother of four under 10 year-olds, believes it is important for children to make new friends outside school: ‘It really helps them stand on their own and develop their confidence. There isn’t that pecking order thing that you have in the playground. It’s a chance to break out of whatever mould you’ve been cast in.’ After-school care - When both parents work, after-school activities on school premises can be incredibly valuable. Most schools offer a mix of teacher—run and externally—organised clubs after school, and even at weekends.

A sense of achievement - Amanda says: ‘Kitty, 8, has just reached purple belt and she has been made karate captain. She’s very proud, it’s tremendously good for her.’ For all the family - When Patrick started tennis lessons, his parents were inspired to get active too. Mum Maria has joined a tennis club for adult group coaching, and dad Mike cycles to and from Patrick’s lessons with him.

What the children say How much extra-curricular activity do children think they should be doing, and what are their favourites? Imogen, 8, says: ‘I did tap dancing with my friend Molly but I didn’t like it, but I like Brownies and I’m in the school rounders team. I just wish we beat other schools more often!’ Her brother, Hamish, 11, concentrates on sports: ‘I do football, cricket and rugby at school, and karate on Saturday mornings. The extra practice means I get on better teams at school.’ Danny, 12, says, ‘When I was younger I did football club, recorder club, cooking and chess club, but now I’m at senior school, I’m just doing football for now.’ Jackson, 9, says: ‘I go to swimming, football and piano classes. I’d like to give up the piano because I don’t want to practise every day, but my Mum won’t let me.’

Robert has observed that when there is a high number of girls in groups they tend to want to stick together and not work with boys. With more balanced numbers of boys taking part in drama this can improve the chance to mix. This is increased further because drama relies very much on interacting with your peers.

family life Keeping your home clean and clutter free just got a little bit easier.

FRANCES LOATES tries out an amazing new floor cleaning device that clears up the mess while you get on with your life and discovers a great website where you can get rid of your stuff to other locals without all the hassle of packing up and posting.

our carpet genie My friends and family will tell you that I’m the last person to fall for tricksy gadgets, having performed household duties over the years with the mantra ‘simple is best’. When I was urged to try out a new automatic floor cleaning machine, as the mother of one particularly messy eater, I was interested, but sceptical. The Samsung Navibot Silencio promises:  Hands-free automated floor cleaning  A scheduling function, allowing you to set specific cleaning times so the device can clean while users you’re out, or doing other stuff at home  It will drive itself around the room, removing dust and dirt in its path  The cognitive mapping technology uses two CPU control chips, which serve as the ‘brain’ behind its intelligent navigation program, allowing it to remember where it has cleaned in relation to objects and its charging base Shaped like a super sized beetle with sweeping antennae, the Navibot scuttles about the floors, ‘remembering’ where it’s been and returning to its base station when it needs a recharge.

community spirit

You can programme it to get to work at a certain time, do some spot cleaning, pay special attention to all those corners and when you put it on the Max mode it will continue cleaning and cleaning until it has simply run out of power. There’s even a mop attachment for catching every single spec of dust.

the pros

 It’s a great feeling to get on with your life knowing that the cleaner is getting on with the floors – a genuine time saver  You really can just leave it to get on with the work – there’s even a special detector which prevents it falling down stairs  The virtual guards can be placed at the entrance of the room to be cleaned to keep it in that area if you want to  Designed to clean under certain items of furniture, it reaches some of the places you and your regular hoover will not go  Fascinates and intrigues all children and visitors  Yes it’s silencio!

the cons

 Don’t get rid of your hand-held hoover – the Navibot Silencio cannot tackle the stairs … yet! admin and there’s the form filling for tracking your goods. All that is after you have bought appropriate packaging materials which can be tricky and expensive. Of course there’s always Freecycle as an option but that’s the same amount of effort for no immediate reward for the stuff! Sellthingslocally.com literally is what it says. The website lists things for sale in your area, keeping your environmental conscience clear with minimal transport. No more wrapping, posting or courier charges. The site enables households to de-clutter their homes by advertising for free any items/services they wish to sell or advertise in their local community - and get to keep the proceeds. I read a magazine article recently where a mother cleared out her house and made thousands of pounds by flogging the family’s unwanted stuff on eBay. Monster books LUCY NOGUERA from Brilliant Monsters has some great

seasonal book recommendations and tips on getting your children into the reading habit. Keeping children interested in reading books, especially when there’s so much other fun stuff to do (especially in this internet/iPad/ iPod age we’re living in) can be a bit of a struggle. So we need to be really creative and use everything that’s around us in our day-to-day lives as a bit of inspiration. Books need to be seen as an exciting ad entertaining choice in themselves rather than just as another sneaky way of getting them to do extra homework. They need to be well written, exciting and most importantly fun! They also require less effort in terms of using your imagination. So using mixed media is the best way to keep your kids reading. With young children, books

provide them with the perfect opportunity to learn more about the world around them. New subject specific vocabulary can be learnt, and new experiences can be prepared for. This can work particularly well with toddlers because through books you can start to make them understand and be prepared for new experiences such as a baby arriving or potty training starting or even annual celebrations like Christmas and Halloween. Books can be a comforting and natural way to explore these new experiences. Sharing books gives you both the opportunity to talk, and talking with a parent is one of the best and most natural ways for children to learn.

So from here to Halloween... The calendar can often give us interesting subject matter, so whenever possible try to use it to engage your child. For the week around Halloween read spooky stories, when they want to dress up for trick or treat, use books for the inspiration for their costumes. Interest in the subject is half the

battle, kids loves Halloween and scary stuff, so run with it, you could even try reading ‘scary’ books in scary costumes. They will learn new vocabulary and practise reading aloud with expression, especially if they are sitting there dressed up as a monster, ghost or a witch. And best of all they won’t even notice they are learning.

1 Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson Age 2 to 7 years Best known as the author of the Gruffalo, Julia Donaldson is the new Children’s Laureate. Find out more at www.childrenslaureate.org.uk This is a rhyming story but uses some really interesting vocabulary (unlike some children’s authors she doesn’t try to shoehorn in words just for the their rhyming value) and is perfect for reading aloud. A cat, a witch, a frog and even a dragon all have plenty to say. Practice talking like a frog or a bird with your child. You model the voice and let them copy you if they need a bit of help. Talk about the weather (the leaves are flying around on the cover), talk about it being

windy. Wonder aloud what time of year do we have windy weather? This book can be approached in so many different ways apart from a straightforward reading of the text. 2 Tobias and the Super Spooky Ghost Book - Tom Percival Age 3+ 3 Have You Seen Who’s Just Moved in Next Door to Us? - Colin McNaughton Age 3 and upwards but plenty of detail for older children too. Great for shared reading, as you can even discuss prejudice. An excellent book with far more to offer than just a good story. Features Frankenstein and lots of other well known and unexpected characters like King Kong. 4 Winnie The Witch - Valerie Thomas & Korky Paul (Part of a series) Age 5 to 7 years Perfect for older siblings to read to younger siblings. 5 The Worst Witch - Jill Murphy Age 5 upwards, age 7 and upwards to read alone. 6 Cosmo & The Great Witch Escape - Gwyneth Rees (Part of a series) Age 7 to 9 years Great to share read.

7 Skullduggery Pleasant - Derek Landy Age 9+ Suits a confident reader. Encourage your 9/10 year old and upwards to take a look at the fantastic Skullduggery Pleasant series. The covers are fabulously scary illustrations by the always excellent Tom Percival. They’re a good chunky read and if they get hooked on them there are five more in the series and boys often love to collect a series. The books have an excellent accompanying website where they can find out more about the characters. Using a well thought out website like this is a great way of expanding their on and off-line reading experience. www.skullduggerypleasant.co.uk If you have children of different ages, sit them down together to do Halloween reading, give them all a new book to read or share-read if they are young enough to still want to do this with you. Order books in from your library in advance if you can (and if you still have a local library!) Encourage older siblings to read aloud to younger ones in spooky voices. All of this is revisiting and developing key reading skills. It’s learning by osmosis!

extra Brilliant Monsters is offering Room on the Broom as part of a special book pack. For £15 (which includes personalised delivery to your child in a super shiny envelope) you get a copy of the book and ten pages of parental notes, showing you how to get the most out of the book, both in terms of enjoyment and as a way to extend your child’s learning in a completely natural way. The notes also include questions to ask your children and even fun and natural ways to introduce maths or extend pre-reading skills into your routine. All packs include a knitted mini Brilliant Monster to cuddle as you read the book together. mum means business

Deliciously yours Hannah Gill from Twickenham tells us about her blossoming cake business, how she manages to bake such gorgeous cakes, look after her little son, work part-time elsewhere and how man handling a certain ‘boy’ band is all in a day’s work. Q What got you into baking? A I have been baking since I was a little girl. My Mum made wedding cakes and her father, my Grandad was a baker and made the most amazing cakes and roses. My earliest memory is making my mum a birthday cake as she huffed and puffed her way through labour in our lounge. I wouldn’t let her go to hospital until she had blown the candles out!

Q What made you decide to

turn a hobby into a business?

A At the prospect of being made redundant for the second time in 18 months I thought it was time that I had a fall-back option. I have always made cakes for friends and family and they encouraged me to start to make them for others too. So far it has been a success with a few orders every week and it means that I can spend time with Liam in the day and bake cakes in the evening. Plus I don’t need air freshener as my house always smells lush! Q So how long have you been up and running now?

A I set up Yummy Mummy’s Cakes in January with my first official orders coming through in February. I’ve not looked back ... Q How do you juggle all that

with looking after your son and training to be a childminder?

A I am still working 25 hours a week as a Connexions Adviser, a job that I love as well as the training, the cakes and my little boy. We have a great routine and when Liam (age one in September) is awake he is my priority. I clean, bake and study in my evenings. It’s much more fun than watching tv. Oh and I have a diary - I’d be totally lost without it. Q Tell us a bit about your cakes.

A Well my cakes are all made no

by the customer and can be personalised with writing, pictures, colours pretty much anything. I love making quirky cakes, be it a pumpkin mouse house or a racing car they are so much fun to make. As well as lots of flavour combinations from traditional vanilla to more modern carrot and orange or cherry and marzipan, (my favourite being my gluten free lemon cake) I also make vanilla biscuits which are perfect for small children and make great party bag treats! If you have an idea just ask as I love being creative and nothing is impossible.

A It’s definitely my gluten-free lemon drizzle cake with mascarpone and lemon curd frosting. It is so light and moist I could happily polish of a whole one to myself. All my cakes can be made in various shapes sizes and, (most dangerous of all) cupcakes.

Q What do you enjoy most,

Q What has been your most

A I try to work with the customer to design a cake which is personal to their requirements. They may have a specific colour in mind or a child’s favourite toy. I then try to come up with two or three ideas

A That has to go to the pumpkin mouse house for my friend’s little girl’s first birthday. That or the Westlife cake I am making for a 50th. The whole band sat singing round the edge of the cake. I have to say I never thought I would get to man handle Westlife!

travel Don’t let the back-to-school blues get to you, book an autumn break right now and read some tips on booking that winter ski holiday from a top family specialist.

Ski essentials Paul and Francesca Eyre moved to Morzine 18 years ago, started family ski company Chilly Powder and had 3 children. We asked them the most important things you should consider when taking your family on a ski holiday.  Don’t rush to high altitude resorts because children can sometimes get altitude sickness. It’s also unsafe for babies under the age of 1 to go up in high cable cars because of the air pressure.  Finding a resort with an easy, short airport transfer will be a blessing! Also check that your airport transfer company is properly licensed and has the child car seats that you’ll need.

 While you’re on your transfer vehicle from the airport to your holiday accommodation, try to sit as near to the front of the bus as possible - then there’s less chance of the windy roads making your children sick.  It’s pointless wasting money on expensive ski clothes for your children - they’ll only outgrow them by next year! Borrow what you can from friends or try TK Maxx in September and October.  If your children are attending ski school or childcare, make sure you sew their names in to their clothes so they don’t get mixed up with others.

Family breaks in the Cotswolds Escape to the Cotswolds this autumn and enjoy a great-value family break at a charming, country inn. Over October half-term, the Old Swan and Minster Mill in the picturesque village of Minster Lovell, is offering families the opportunity to stay seven nights in adjoining or interconnecting bedrooms for the price of five, at a special rate of just £250 per night including full English breakfast. This special price is only available for bookings of 7 nights or more. For shorter stays, families can take advantage of their fantastic 3 nights for 2 offer. Sitting in quintessentially English country gardens surrounded by the beautiful Cotswold countryside, the Minster Mill offers families the freedom to while away the hours with scenic walks, fishing on over a mile of the River Windrush or cycling along quiet country lanes. This cosy, country retreat has been beautifully restored over the past year by the de Savary family of hoteliers and now offers 40 contemporary style bedrooms in the Minster Mill, overlooking the gardens and meadows beyond. Delicious, seasonal food is served in the Old Swan’s welcoming gastro-pub next door, complete with roaring log fires and flagstone floors, and a special menu for

 If you’re taking a pushchair, take one with large wheels. Standard chairs will be impossible to push in the snow but maybe your holiday centre has a stash of them for you to borrow?  Don’t forget that sun block is just as important on a winter holiday as it is in the summer. Take sun block rather than spray so that you don’t have to take your gloves off to rub it in!

here to help

Consultant vascular surgeon Keith Jones from Kingston tells us about varicose veins in pregnancy, what causes them and how they can be prevented.

Varicose veins

We also hear about some new strategies for tackling autism

and Asperger’s.

and pregnancy

how to prevent or minimise your risk of developing varicose veins:

Around 3 in 10 adults in the UK will at some point during their lifetime develop varicose veins. Most people who develop varicose veins will not have any underlying disease and the reason behind their development will often remain unknown. However, women especially are more susceptible to developing varicose veins both during and after their pregnancy. This increased prevalence is due to the growth of the uterus which increases the pressure on the pelvic veins and on the inferior vena cava. ‘This major blood vessel has to work hard as it receives blood from your lower limbs and most of the organs in your pelvis and belly. The increased pressure on your inferior vena cava makes it harder for the blood from your legs to make its return journey to your heart’, explains Mr Keith Jones. ‘At the same time, you have more blood circulating round your pregnant body and the hormone progesterone relaxes your blood vessel walls. This means the veins in your legs are likely to become swollen, or varicose. While varicose veins are more common in pregnancy, the good news is they do tend to get better once you’ve had your baby.’

3 Exercise a little everyday. A quick walk around the block will help boost your circulation and make you feel better too! 3 Try to keep within the recommended weight range for your stage of pregnancy. Talk to your doctor or midwife for advice. 3 Raise your feet and legs up whenever you are sitting or lying down. Try using a stool or box as a leg rest when you’re sitting and a pillow when you’re lying down. If you can get your legs up 15 to 30 cm above your heart, you’ll gain the most benefit. 3 Don’t cross your legs or ankles when you’re sitting and take frequent breaks to move around, whether you’re sitting or standing. 3 Sleep on your left side with your feet raised up on a pillow. You’ll probably find it easiest to get nice and comfy if you wedge a pillow behind your back. A maternity pillow will help you stay in the right position. Lying on your left side takes the weight of your uterus off the inferior vena cava. 3 Wear elastic support hose if your legs or ankles are swollen. Put them on first thing in the morning to keep blood from pooling in the lower leg veins. ‘For most women, after pregnancy, varicose veins will fade on their own within three or four months of having their baby. But if they don’t and the veins become too uncomfortable to live with, it is possible to have them corrected surgically. At BMI Coombe Wing we offer treatment for varicose veins that is minimally invasive and relatively pain free, so you don’t have anything to worry about,’ Mr Jones concludes.

extra

offer BMI Coombe Wing has recently launched a new walk in, walk out service for varicose treatment. The new treatment, VNUS, is a clinically proven, minimally invasive procedure that treats varicose veins and their underlying cause with little or no pain. Led by Mr Jones, this minimally invasive technique provides fast, effective treatment to patients suffering from varicose veins. As a special introductory offer, and for a limited time only, BMI Coombe Wing is offering patients a reduction to the normal price. The initial consultation with Mr Jones will cost £150 with surgery for a single leg treatment costing £1350. Patients who require treatment on both legs can receive the second treatment for just £800.

Mr Jones is based at BMI Coombe Wing at Kingston Hospital NHS Trust. To find out more about this service, or to arrange a consultation with Mr Jones please contact BMI Coombe Wing on 020 8546 6677 or visit www.bmihealthcare.co.uk/coombewing

Strategies for autism and Asperger’s

has your child been diagnosed with Asperger’s or autism? or do you want to teach a child with Autism spectrum disorder how to interact better with peers and how to make significant gains in language skills? A workshop in London this october could help. Do you want to develop techniques to unlock your child’s potential? It can be really difficult to know how best to deal with the challenging behaviour of a child diagnosed with autism - or to help them when they get anxious in crowds or are unable to socialise with their classmates. Network Interventions teaches parents and educators Verbal Behaviour strategies which are proven to improve the language, behaviour and social skills of children with autism. The techniques tap into a child’s natural motivations - even though a child with autism is not motivated in the same way as their peers, they are still motivated! This knowledge, combined with scientific techniques, can be used to help in ways traditional methods have not. Network Interventions is passionate about giving parents hope and the tools to teach their children themselves. The child will want to use language and sometimes mix with their peers for the first time. In turn, this reduces challenging behaviour and increases cooperation from them. One-day workshop at Novotel, London Waterloo, 113 Lambeth Road, SE1 7LS, 15th October. Call 0333 344 0201 or check www.networkinterventions.com 20

case study - Jack, surrey Jack is a six year-old boy with a diagnosis of language delay. He had no friends, was unable to follow multiple-step instructions at home and at school and had at least one tantrum each day at home, lasting over one hour. Jack asked no questions as school and only made simple requests at home. Jack’s mum contacted Network Interventions, as school had told her that, ‘although he had significant impairments they weren’t as bad as others’, so could not help. Rather than fighting for a new diagnosis or statement, Jack’s mum decided to concentrate on therapy. Two consultations and one in-school consultation later, Jack has on average one tantrum a week lasting ten minutes. He is having successful play dates and is now asking and answering advanced questions both in and out of school.
