IN BRIEF Little Explorers group takes Gosport by storm (and sunshine too)
NCT Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent’s new outdoor parent and baby/toddler group, Little Explorers, has proved more and more popular with local mums. The unique baby and toddler group is based outdoors and meets every Friday between 10am and 12 noon in different locations to enjoy some fresh air, a walk or toddle and a chat. The outdoor format makes it easy to talk to people and to get involved. Little Explorers offers a great opportunity to explore the fantastic natural environment that Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent has to offer. Recent events include bear hunting in Browndown woods, making pirate treasure on Lee beach and playing parachute games at Stokes Bay. A session is just £1 per family, in aid of the NCT. Details of each week’s session and meeting point are posted on NCT Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent’s Facebook page and can also be found at www.nct.org.uk/in-your-area/gosport/events

Kip McGrath
writing success!
When Portsmouth Live TV (a local internet TV service) held a writing competition, Kip McGrath students were quick to enter, with all their stories written or planned at the Portsmouth centre. Students and proud parents attended the prize giving on board HMS Warrior in the Historic Dockyard and the captain of the ship announced the winner. First prize went to Rea with her story about Maxilator’s adventures at the Vampire School!
Following the success of the competition it may become an annual event. All students are encouraged to develop their literacy skills at the Kip McGrath Education Centre Portsmouth. When they first visit, each child has a free assessment. Then an individual plan is created for them at their level of ability. Students are given work that they can do which makes them feel successful again. This helps them to enjoy learning again, often making a difference to their whole school experience. So many students are unhappy at school because they are being asked to do work that is above their ability. This could be for many reasons, changing school, childhood illness, hearing or eyesight problems, the list goes on! For some reason they have missed out, or need more help to learn essential building blocks. Hundreds of students have been helped by Kip McGrath and in most cases it’s made a huge difference! If you’d like some help for your child with reading, writing, spelling or maths call Kip McGrath on 023 92 755923 or visit kipmcgrath.co.uk/Portsmouth

Help with everyday costs If you’re responsible for at least one child or young person who normally lives with you, you may be eligible for Child Tax Credit. If you work, but earn low wages, you may be eligible for Working Tax Credit. Child Tax Credit: According to the Government nine out of ten families with children can qualify. You don’t have to be a parent either - anyone who’s mainly responsible for a child can claim. Working Tax Credit: If you’re in work but on low pay, you can apply for Working Tax Credit to top up your earnings. You can claim this whether you’re employed or self-employed and you may get extra assistance depending on your situation. It’s worth checking out! Call the HM Revenue and Customs helpline:

y Part Time! Families Feature
Bright ideas for birthdays by Robina Cowan DID SOMEONE SAY party? Yes, I’m afraid so. One thing’s as sure as eggs is eggs - your child WILL have another birthday in the next year. It’s Families to the rescue - we’ve put on our party hats to find the best suppliers around to ensure your ‘do’ is one they’ll talk about, until at least next year...
Planning your party Crowd control: Entertainers Bubbles, puppets, drama, music, or magician? A good entertainer will bring your party to life and keep the children enthralled while you enjoy the fun from a safe distance. While there are parents who think nothing of timetabling two hours of games, entertaining other people’s children is not a breeze, which is where expert help is well worth the investment. TIP: Children’s entertainers generally have vast experience and contacts which you can tap into. Ask them about local venues for hire,
a realistic timetable and suitable prizes as well as the entertainment itself. Find out their preferred age group, and the maximum number of children they will cope with - too many and you’ll not get the best out of them. Write down everything you’ve agreed together so there is no doubt on the day. Take them out: Venues It might feel less imaginative than an organised bunfight at yours, but do you really have the time, energy and creativity to decorate your house as a fairy grotto or superhero den, then clear it all up four hours later? Thought not. Happily there are plenty of places where all you have to do is pay the per-head charge and the guests will be entertained and fed, leaving you to return to your quiet, tidy house afterwards. Try child-friendly restaurants, bowling alleys, go-karting, indoor playcentres, sports clubs, the zoo, a pottery painting studio or cinema. TIP: Book well ahead. There are only so many party groups venues can accommodate at any given time - you don’t want to be scratching around at the last minute and end up having to book ‘second best’. Themed parties A great idea when your child has a particular interest, themes can be explored in many different ways. How about a drama, musical, circus or magic party, a sports party; or get crafty making bags, jewellery or cookies, or print t-shirts to match the theme. TIP: Take the theme throughout the party - print off related pictures from the web as wall decorations, ask the guests to dress up with a prize for the best home-made hat.
Top tips * It’s all in the timing: For little children, 11am-1pm or 12-2pm are best. Most of them have been up since six and they’re past their best by the afternoon. For older children a lunchtime slot or mid afternoon start will work * Liaise with parents whose children have birthdays around the same time. If you both book the same day for a party, the guest list will be tricky. Joining forces is a much better idea - you can share the costs and the hassle * Keep the food simple and don’t over cater. Most children are too excited to have a big appetite. Limit the junk food and check if any children have special requirements such as an allergy or a food intolerance * Sleepovers: come midnight, you’ll be regretting it... Planning ahead is KEY. Read our ‘been there, done that’ parent’s guide: go to www.familiesonline.co.uk and type ‘successful sleepovers’ into the search box.

Volunteering is good for you
It’s Official: Volunteering is good for you! By Sam Hannay
A research paper was published by the Lampeter University, Wales, which highlights a number of health benefits linked to volunteering. However, I don’t believe it takes a scientist to come to the conclusion that doing any form of volunteering can make us feel good, both in terms of our physical and emotional wellbeing.
Volunteers can do anything! In various settings and circumstances around the world there are volunteer doctors, cleaners, cooks, lawyers, gardeners, engineers . . . the list is virtually endless. Many organisations are entirely run by volunteers, or have volunteer management committees and it can be said that volunteers are the lifeblood of any charity organisation. So why do people volunteer?
Margaret Mead, an American Anthropologist said
doubt that “Never a small group of
thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
”
Social contact – many people use volunteering as a way of meeting people and developing a valuable social network. Volunteering promotes social support and interaction and can provide an opportunity to use skills in a different environment or simply get out of the house for some physical activity. Feel-good factor – volunteering can offer us the feeling that we are a significant part of the world around us and that people notice, care about and value our existence. People see volunteering as an effective use of spare time, when they can contribute to their community and ‘give something back’ to society, particularly as society values volunteer roles. Personal development – volunteering can be a great way to acquire new skills and experience.
A volunteer role may also offer the opportunity to satisfy a life-long desire, or work in a field that is unavailable through a paid job. Employers value volunteer work, particularly as it demonstrates motivation, commitment and a pro-active attitude. Volunteer roles are generally flexible so they can be fitted around your family life. To share experience or skills - volunteer roles allow people to share their experiences with others and pass along much needed skills, promoting feelings of self-worth. Volunteer management committees provide a platform for decision making, financial responsibility, publicity and fundraising, event management and many other highly skilled, team roles. Indeed, appropriately skilled and motivated individuals are essential to the success of many charity organisations. If you’re considering a volunteer role, it’s useful to be clear about your reasons, so that both you and the organisation can get the best from the opportunity. Think about your favourite charities, the activities you enjoy, skills you’d like to develop and so on. It’s never too late to volunteer!
