Everyone remembers their first movie at the cinema; Cinderella squeezing her tiny foot into a glass slipper or Jack and Rose perched atop the rails of the ill-fated Titanic. The smell of popcorn, the beat of the up-tempo music that seems to travel through the ground and up through your body - it’s enchanting. It was at King Street Cinema (then called Ipswich Film Theatre) that I first fell in love with cinema.
Located within the Corn Exchange in Ipswich, the cinema has a beautiful atmosphere with exposed brick and wood panelling. As a child you barely notice the decor, but you remember the feeling you had while you were there. It was here I first watched Christopher Reeve fly through the air in his red cape, utterly transfixed. I have gone on to work in cinema my entire adult life and the love of watching a film on the big screen hasn’t dwindled. Now,…let's say a few years on… we want to create the same magical experiences for our kids, and their kids to come.
This year we are excited to launch a summer programme for our younger audiences. We want them to have the same shared experiences we had as children when we watched a film at the cinema. A mix of older classics such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as well as new releases like Barbie and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will provide something for everyone. Check out our Summer Programme (see more on p4) and head to our website to book.
This year we re-launched our kids club; King Street Jr. These shows are JUST for families - meaning if you arrive without a child you won't be let in. We want to create a space where families feel comfortable going out to enjoy a film, not worried their child is going to knock over the popcorn or be hushed if they’re too loud. With a child of our own we know the challenges of bringing little ones to the cinema - but we want this cinema to be different; somewhere you can go as a family and create your own movie memories. With kids club tickets priced at £4.50 we want to make sure that it doesn’t break the bank too.

You’ll have the chance to get creative as you build your own summer house and perform on the summer house stage overlooking the stunning canal lake.

We asked Emily Leary, multi-awardwinning food, lifestyle and parenting writer, presenter, photographer and author of A Mummy Too to share her delicious, creamy dairy-free ice cream recipe with us. This perfect summer treat will cool you down on even the warmest of days and inspire the whole family to get in the kitchen just for a lick of the spoon!
We asked Naomi Walmsley, author, with Dan Westall, of the Forest School Handbook for some ideas from the book on how to connect kids with nature. Here are her inspiring ideas.
Mark out a sticky, muddy area (or area of loose dirt) with sticks about three by two feet. One person turns away whilst the other hops, skips and jumps through the pit. Now guess how they moved through by looking closely at their tracks.
It’s all about blending in. Place your hand on a tree or at the base of it. Take away the shine using charcoal, add mud to change the colour. Sprinkle on some woodland mulch or stick on some tiny sticks and moss or bits of bark to add texture.
Imagine a family of tiny goblins or make this village for your favourite toy. Find places that have interesting characteristics, a hole in a tree, creeping roots etc. Add leaves on sticks for miniature trees, pebbles for bridges, moss for roofs and make mini shelters big enough for your imaginary guests or toy.
Find a thin sheet of slate. Place it on a hard surface and break off bits you don’t want with a round, heavy stone. Make a triangular arrow shape. Rub back and forwards to smooth it, using sandstone, any rough rock or rough outdoor surface. Hey presto! Your own simple stone tool.
We asked Naomi Walmsley, author, with Dan Westall, of the Forest School Handbook for some ideas from the book on how to connect kids with nature. Here are her inspiring ideas.
You’ll be amazed how many different colours you can see when you start to look. Pick up a free colour chart from a hardware or DIY shop. Head to the park or forest or even into a town to see which natural things match the colours on your chart.
Conkers are a great resource
Pick a large handful in spring using a gardening glove. Add them to a blender with a banana, some pineapple, a glug of coconut milk, a slab of cucumber, half an avocado and blend until completely smooth: this will remove the sting.
For endless play and learning adventures

At the end of summer, the seeds (conkers), leaves and bark of the horse chestnut tree all contain ‘saponin’ which has similar properties to soap. Grate the conkers, pour over warm water and leave to steep. Use after about half an hour to wash grubby hands or clean your clothes!

Young children can be fascinated by water, and swimming is great for a child's health and fitness. Here are some tips to make sure that their time in the water is fun and safe:
• Babies and small children mostly drown at home in the bath or in the garden, in just a few centimetres of water. Children should be supervised in the water at all times. Don’t rely on older children to supervise.
• It’s not just young children who are at risk. Older children and teens can get into trouble, especially while ‘wild’ swimming. Strong currents, deep water and objects lurking under the water are unlikely to be obvious.
• Don’t assume that because a child can swim, they will be safe.
• Drowning happens silently. As drowning occurs, the instinctive drowning response means that a child is unable to speak or to control their arm movements, and they slip quietly under the water – it’s a myth that they splash about, shout or scream.
• Even if you’ve taken steps to make your garden or environment safe, children have drowned after wandering into neighbouring gardens. Be mindful of this at home and on holiday.
• Empty paddling pools when they’re not in use.
Drowning prevention information from The Child Accident Prevention Trust can be found at:
www.capt.org.uk
Is your youngster a reluctant reader? Despite tempting them with every type of book, do they still only read when they ‘have’ to and not for pleasure?
The long summer holidays are an ideal time to encourage your child to ditch their screens and curl up with an engrossing story book instead.
So let’s get started:
Create a reading den
Every home should have a reading corner or den; a place that is inviting and excites children. Choose a quiet spot and add some pillows, bean bags or cushions to curl up on. Perhaps you could put up some posters to get them in the mood for imaginative thinking. What about: Under the Sea, Rainbows, Castles, Transport, In the Jungle?
Use television subtitles
Put your child’s favourite programmes on with subtitles and no sound. Can they read along and understand what is happening?
Host karaoke sessions so that children are challenged to read and sing lyrics on the screen.
Learn a poem together
Why not learn a topical poem alongside your child: find one about holidays, the weather or beaches to fit the season!
Think of it as CBBC bedtime stories. Use your phone to film yourself reading a story and send in the video to your child’s teacher. If other parents do the same, the whole class can enjoy a story read by someone other than their teacher!
There’s nothing more guaranteed to get your child excited about the new school year than some new stationery for back to school. Here are our top summer shopping choices.
‘My son’s Educational Psychologist Report revealed he has visual processing problems. But what does this mean?’
Opticians check your child’s eye health and how well their eyes take in visual data. But how well does your child’s brain interpret what they see?
