An inclusive playground has opened in Finchley’s Victoria Park, aiming to empower disabled and non-disabled people of all ages to play together without exclusion or bias. In the UK, there are 16 million disabled people, of which 1 million are children, yet Scope found almost half of parents with disabled children say there are accessibility issues at their local playground.
Mums Nathalie Esfandi and Deborah Gundle co-founded Fair Play and fund-raised the money needed to build the playground after reflecting on their own children's experiences.
Myopia – short-sightedness – currently affects 29 per cent of the population and is predicted to affect 50 per cent by 2050. Eye doctor Yasmin El-Rouby has written a series of books aiming to raise awareness of common vision disorders and the importance of early detection and prevention.
Her series of books, for 4 to 8 years, follows Misty Mole on a journey of selfdiscovery and acceptance as she learns to live with myopia. The series: Misty Mole Gets New Glasses, Misty Mole and the Eating Adventure, and Misty Mole and the Big Switch Off, has just been published by Neem Tree Press.
Yasmin hopes the relatable picture books will help children understand the importance of taking care of their eyesight.

After the baby months of feeding, getting to grips with naps and developing a routine and then finally moving onto solids, you’d think that the first year would be the hardest when it comes to sleep right? Wrong! Toddlers are notorious for their sleep challenges and while you may have had a baby who naps well and sleeps through the night, it is not unusual for this all to change

in their second year and beyond – welcome to toddlerhood!
Sleep for toddlers is complex. It’s not just about making sure they are well fed and awake for long enough during the day but also whether they’ve had enough of your attention to not crave it at night as well. Cue multiple visits to your bedroom once they can get out of their bed!
Nightmares
For many toddlers, imagination kicks in from around the age of 2. This can bring genuine fears of the dark, monsters or anything else their brain has convinced them is scary. This makes dropping off to sleep difficult and they may wake and need your support to settle down again. Reading comforting books together, favourite teddies or dolls and limiting TV exposure can be really useful, as can keeping a warm red or orange night light on.
Bedtime resistance
Another key stage in a toddler’s development is that they start to realise that they possess the language and control to be able to delay going to bed. "One more story, two more songs, I want milk, I need a wee," have been commonly heard by many a toddler parent! While this is a phase and happens to the vast majority of parents, it is important to consider sticking to your boundaries during this period so that bedtime doesn’t start to become a two-hour process. We speak to many parents who feel they have lost control and that their toddler now dictates their bedtime routine!
Co-sleeping
And then, of course, there is the idea that maybe they just want to be close to you. Sleeping in the same bed is
Les Petites Etoiles Bilingual Montessori, with locations in Angel, Crouch Hill, Paddington, Tufnell Park, and West Hampstead, warmly welcomes children from 6 months old. Their French and English bilingual program – with an introduction to Mandarin –offers a nurturing environment where infants and toddlers can flourish under experienced caregivers. With a focus on the Montessori method, their aim is to cultivate a stimulating environment where every child can thrive and reach their full potential. lpe.uk
considered normal in many cultures.
The opinions of parents, about this arrangement, varies hugely in the UK. While some are very pro co-sleeping, others prefer separate beds and the prospect of a better night’s sleep without being kicked by little limbs. When it comes to night time sleeping arrangements, choose the best approach for your family.
Consistency
Some parents struggle with this. Whether you help them fall asleep or ask them to settle to sleep on their own, it is the consistency of whatever approach you take that helps. Doing different things can be confusing for a toddler and this can lead to multiple night wakes. Choose one approach and stick with it. The whole family will get a better night’s sleep.
Visual charts
With a pictorial bedtime routine on a wall in their room, you can refer to it at trickier times. If your toddler is asking for one more story, you can say "let’s look at your chart and see how many stories we have!" It gives them a point of reference and a sense of being in control, which is so much of what a toddler strives for.

No matter how skilled or knowledgeable a person might be, their attitude may well be the deciding factor in their future success, both personal and professional. Recent neuroscience has discovered the crucial role a positive attitude plays in the learning process, particularly during the primary years.
The second a child is born, its brain, with roughly 86billion neurons or nerve cells, “hits the ground running” making connections through senses and experience. Everything a young child does, feels, hears and sees creates pathways between these nerve cells, building a reference bank of experience. In the first three years, the connections the brain makes rise to one thousand trillion. Ninety percent of brain development is complete by the time a child is five. Although there is a default setting for the brain to function whether we engage or not, when it comes to learning, children who are actively engaged are going to be far more effective and so higher achieving than peers simply “going through the motions”.
Encourage your child to be independent by teaching them skills: Start with self control and move on to organisation, planning and taking responsibility. Children love to have a positive, personal development reason for what they do that both has meaning for them and brings results.
Children don’t assume: Choose a regular date for a hot chocolate or breakfast alone together, say once a month. Clear everything to listen to how your child is getting on. This validates them and tells them they matter enough for you to clear space to talk to them.
If you can’t listen "right now", tell them when you will. Children are quite happy to wait until they have your attention if you let them know when that will be. Recognise effort. A child once told me I could photocopy a blank sheet of paper to help the school budget. I loved his creative thinking, took him to the photocopier and explained in a warm and friendly way the reason that it wouldn’t work!
The reason for this is that, as we grow, the brain takes its lead from what we do repeatedly. Where we make a conscious decision to put effort, the brain focuses connections. Children who enjoy what they’re doing and who have a positive attitude, actively engage. Active engagement creates the signal for the connections the brain makes to be “cemented” in myelin, a coating of fat and protein which make it “automatic”. This is how learning is assimilated and habits are created.
The brain doesn’t know whether what we’re doing is good or not, it just takes its lead from repeated behaviour and feedback from our surroundings, in this case, parents and teachers. The more positive our attitude, the more positive the connections and growth we make, which can lead to excellence in performance.
Start with a clean slate: From now on, LISTEN to what your child has to say without interrupting, judging or criticising.
Listen without looking for a solution: This may mean ignoring the sullen voice and complaint that can come first.
Recognise that, up to puberty, children are based in feelings: Their brain is unlikely to have enough experience or reference to express the negative feelings which have caused the attitude change.
Demonstrate empathy and understanding: Be available to help your child deal with the inner conflict they feel.
Be prepared to make changes: in routine, in practical ways and even in yourself, if necessary.

Ofsted Report
With Ivy House School now offering a co-ed education, Headmaster Donal Brennan explains how the family feel of the school has been enhanced, feeding into its children’s success.
Small class sizes allow the school to give the children opportunities to mix across the years at playtime and in sports. Donal said: “All the nursery children know the Year 5s and 6s by name. They might be the ones helping the nursery children to put their coats on. All that helps to create the sense of Ivy House being a family school," said Donal. “Becoming co-ed means we can be fully a family school,” he added.
Ensuring the children are happy and have their voices heard is essential for empowering them to become selfmotivated learners – a cornerstone of the school’s high-performing, low-stress approach to the 11+.
“We are very good at walking that 11+ journey with parents. From Year 5, we have a bespoke teaching journey toward 11+ success with the least amount of anxiety. We are academically ambitious about getting the children into the right places when they are ready – and we have a proven track record of success,” said Donal. “We have a tutorial system within the school which means that English and maths are often taught in groups of two, four or six – or one to one – as part of their preparation. Our children preparing for 11+ do not need to be tutored,” he added. Donal ensures that through the 11+, life is as normal for pupils as possible.
“We say there should be more drama and more fun when it’s time for testing and that way everyone is energised and everyone gets prepared. Year 5 and 6 isn’t starved of life because everyone is doing this 11+ in a creaking, tortuous, paper-test-after-test way. That can cause so much anxiety. We are a preparatory school, in the traditional sense, doing the 11+ in the most modern way,” he said.
“We’re traditionally innovative," added Deputy Head Raffaella Merolla. “You get such an individualised, personalised teaching journey here, and it’s not only about hitting targets academically. You get a lead part, you get to have your voice heard, you get to perform in assembly, you get to be on a sports team.”
Donal agreed: “I know that some big schools will say, ‘We can’t guarantee that everyone will get a part in a play’. We can guarantee that everyone will get a part in a play. We re-write the plays to include everyone. Everyone’s voice is needed. That’s an important part of the drama programme." But this is no pressured arena. Pupils are encouraged to try again if they make a mistake in a performance. “Through mistakes, you learn," said Donal, adding, “and that’s really powerful, especially in maths. There’s a strong dialogue between teachers and children, and between children and each other about who might work with who to explore what part of an answer was right and which part might need changing. In that way they really learn to investigate, and try again,” said Donal.
The firm focus on the children’s experience of school led Donal and his team to incorporate movement breaks in lessons and extend break times. All pupils are physically active every day. With specialist teaching in music and drama, sports, classes from Chelsea Ballet, yoga, Mandarin and French included in the fees, a state of the art science lab and dance studio, as well as Learning in Nature for Nursery and Reception in nearby Golders Hill Park, there is a lot to enjoy, and, as the school’s co-ed cohort grows, the school plans to acquire a sports ground to evolve its already extensive sports provision.
“By enriching the children’s programme at school, you’re giving them so many skills that they are so ready for the next stage,” said Raffaella. “It doesn’t matter to the children that they're going to be in a much bigger year group. It does not phase them.“
Donal added: “We want to make sure that children leave Ivy House at 11+ saying, ‘We had the best childhood, achieved our academic goals and would do it all again’.”

A record 350,000 parents in England were fined for taking their children out of school on unauthorised holidays last year – 20 per cent higher than pre-Covid figures. The impact of nature on wellbeing is well documented and getting children outside is proven to boost both physical and mental health. But how do you incentivise them with different, exciting, low cost and eco-friendly outdoor activities all year round? Think crafts, science experiments, scavenger hunts, beach and camping games. Here are just few nature activities you may want to take with you to liven up your next outdoor venture as a family. What’s in the bag?
Pop an object or two in your backpack as you walk and have the rest of your group ask questions to try and guess what it is. You can tell them the first letter of the object and they get ten questions to ask about it – to which you can only answer "yes" or "no". Best not to take anything too heavy or it will feel like a long walk!
Make a leaf wand
At the start of your walk find a long, slim but strong stick. As you walk, thread on the best leaves that you find. You might want to go for all large leaves or all orange leaves or maybe a mix. Encourage every member of your family to do the same – you’ll be surprised how different all your wands look. On your return, arrange your leaf wands into a vase for a beautiful display. If you have a neighbour or older relative who doesn't get out much, consider gifting them a leaf wand to bring a bit of nature’s treasure into their home.
Letter observation game
Each person chooses a letter from the alphabet and tries to spot things beginning with that letter, as they walk. See who spots the most. Because this can be tricky for younger children, it is fine to use descriptive words too so if you have chosen B for example, you could say "blue sky" or "big tree". Or just "bench" if everyone’s ready for a sit-down! You may want to specify that each word can only be used once, or take a notebook to keep track of your spots.
Catherine Hughes and Becky Goddard-Hill are coauthors of A Year of Nature Walks and Games, packed full of ideas to keep kids entertained in the great outdoors all year long. It features crafts, science experiments, scavenger hunts, beach and camping games plus lots and lots of ideas on how to make the great outdoors inspiring. Available from good book stores and online retailers.
Make sure you agree on a "base" before you start. Find five stones, then bring them back to base and see if you can use them to build a tower that doesn’t fall over.
Choose a marker such as a particular tree. Balance a paper cup on your head and walk to the marker, then back to base without the cup falling off. Find some twigs, bring them back to base and use them to form the first letter of your name – or your whole name if you want a bigger challenge.
