Take nature’s pulsejoin the Big Butterfly Count
The Big Butterfly Count is a UK-wide survey aimed which helps to assess the health of our environment by counting the amount and type of butterflies we see.
This year, the world’s biggest survey of butterflies will take place from Friday 14th July until Sunday 6th August.
Everyone can take part. All you have to do is spend fifteen minutes in an outdoor space (including anywhere urban, not just green places and gardens) on a sunny day. Count the types and the number of butterflies, as well as some day-flying moths that you can see.
The results will help to identify where conservation action is needed most. The data is used to identify important trends in species that assists in planning how to protect butterflies from extinction and understand the effect of climate change on wildlife. More info: www.bigbutterflycount.org

Let kids play outside to balance screen time
If you have young children, you may be worried about how much time they spend staring at a screen and wonder whether there’s anything you can do to balance out any negative effects.
New research from Japan has found that although more screen time at 2 years of age is associated with poorer communication and daily living skills at age 4, time spent playing outdoors can reduce these effects on daily living skills by almost 20%.
The researchers also found that socialisation was better in 4-yearolds who had spent more time playing outside when they were age 2.
According to the authors of the research, the results indicate that even if screen time is relatively high, encouraging more outdoor play time might help to keep kids healthy and developing appropriately.

Toddlers with autism sleep less well as babies
Many children with neurodevelopmental conditions like autism struggle to fall and stay asleep. However, we don’t know how early in infancy these difficulties start and whether sleep problems emerge before other behavioural challenges.
To find out, researchers at the Birkbeck BabyLab & ToddlerLab asked parents of infants with a family history of autism about their babies’ sleeping behaviours. The study found that reduced sleep durations, more frequent wake ups and longer settling times at 14-months were associated with slower development, more social difficulties and greater ASD traits at 3-years.
Children with a later diagnosis of ASD showed particularly strong sleep difficulties from infancy, sleeping on average one hundred minutes less a night than typically developing infants.
Understanding the impact of sleep differences on children and designing new interventions are important next steps. To learn more about this and other research, visit: www.cbcd.bbk.ac.uk/babylab

TURNING YOUR CHILD INTO A BOOKWORM
Is your youngster a reluctant reader? Despite tempting them with every type of book, do they still only read when they ‘have’ to and not for pleasure?
The long summer holidays are an ideal time to work with your child. Hopefully, they’ll soon be ditching their screens and curling up with an engrossing story book instead.
We all understand the importance of reading in a child’s development and teachers are always looking for ways to engage children in reading. If you can duplicate their efforts at home, that just might make all the difference. So let’s get started:
CREATE A READING DEN
Every home should have a reading corner or den; a place that is inviting and excites children. Choose a quiet spot and add some pillows, bean bags or cushions to curl up on. Perhaps you could put up some posters to get them in the mood for imaginative thinking. What about: Under the Sea, Rainbows, Castles, Transport, In the Jungle?
USE TELEVISION SUBTITLES
Put your child’s favourite programmes on with subtitles and no sound. Can they read along and understand what is happening?
TRY KARAOKE WITH LYRICS
Host karaoke sessions so that children are challenged to read and sing lyrics on the screen.
LEARN A POEM TOGETHER
Why not learn a topical poem alongside your child: find one about holidays, the weather or beaches to fit the season!
HOST A BOOK ‘CAFE’ PLAY DAY
Put a range of books and reading materials on a table and encourage children to sample them and then discuss with one another.
FILM YOURSELF READING A STORY
Think of it as CBBC bedtime stories. Use your phone to film yourself reading a story and send in the video to your child’s teacher. If other parents do the same, the whole class can enjoy a story read by someone other than their teacher!
USE TECHNOLOGY
Children can also listen to stories with different forms of technology depending on what you have available: a tablet, iPad and CD player are all options. If you have the budget and are feeling fancy, there are some fabulous story telling devices such as a Toniebox or Yoto player too. These are really child friendly and great for a range of ages.
GET THE WHOLE FAMILY INVOLVED
Children take pleasure in reading with younger or older children and this can have a great impact on children’s progress. If you have more than one child, encourage siblings to get involved by recommending and sharing the books they love.
Provide a broad range of reading materials
Try to provide the broadest possible range of reading materials. This includes everything from recipe books to graphic novels, blogs and instructions, as well as traditional books. It matters far less what your child reads than whether they read: if a cereal box is what they enjoy, that’s fine. Once they’re reading for pleasure, they’ll move on to more traditional reading material.
Children enjoy reading about characters that they can relate to. Make sure to include picture books, and those that depict children from different family structures, cultures, religions and also physical abilities.
Friends and family may have books their children have enjoyed that they will be glad to pass on to you. Charity shops are also a fantastic source of very affordable reading material.
Make a habit of regular library visits. Most have comfortable seating corners where families sit and read before choosing more books to take home. And of course it means there’s a constant selection of new stories and fact books to discover - for free.
By Emma ShingletonAnd why not enjoy a book yourself? Leading by example and being seen reading for pleasure every day will encourage your child to do the same. Tell them what your book is about and why you are enjoying it.
Reading doesn’t have to be the traditional reading of a book in silence. Discuss what you read as a family.
When you read to your child, encourage them to think about characters and how they might be feeling, or how they themselves would react in a certain situation. Bring characters to life by asking questions throughout the day about how the children think a character would react. For example, when resolving a sibling dispute, you could ask how they think the wicked witch would solve the problem.
Emma Shingleton is a former primary school teacher who now writes for PlanBee (www.planbee.com) about issues affecting teachers, schools and pupils.
Would you like to host and teach English to a foreign student in your home?

Fairy Lantern Night Light
We have fallen in love with this whimsical little night light from Little-Belle which was created when Laura found herself struggling to find effective sleep solutions for her daughter Eliza.
Laura always loved the magical realm of fairy folk as a child and started to see a difference in Eliza’s sleep when she talked of the sleep fairy – a paediatric sleep specialist endorsed method to help children sleep.
To help keep the magic alive Laura wanted a magic fairy house in her room that would also light up and help her to sleep or reassure her if she woke in the night. With the struggle getting harder with every lost night of sleep, Laura decided to create her own design of night light.
The Little Belle night light was invaluable and Laura wanted to share this success with other parents to help many other little ones, like Eliza, to sleep better.
We adore this little Fairy Carry Lantern which we think would be great for nurseries, camping trips and holidays too. www.little-belle.com £79.95
Link between lack of vitamin D and miscarriage risk
Women with low vitamin D levels are at significantly increased risk of miscarriage, a new study reveals.
Scientists say that assessing vitamin D levels and treating deficiency before conception may offer greater benefit compared to only taking vitamin D during the first trimester. They have called for more research to confirm this approach.
Led by experts at the University of Birmingham, the research team at Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage Research evaluated every study into the impact of vitamin D during pregnancy, finding a significant association between vitamin D levels and the risk of miscarriage or recurrent miscarriage.
Vitamin D has only really been known for its role in late pregnancy complication but the research supports another important role for it too, which could help motivate women to take supplements early, said the authors of the study.
POTTY TRAINING MADE EASIER
Make potty training easier this summer while around the house or out and about and away from home with this great little bundle. Thanks to a convenient and compact fold away design, Potette can either be used as a traditional potty, or as a training seat as it cleverly transitions (with the legs fully flipped out) when little one is ready for the next step.
Pottetes expert Susan shares her 3 top tips for taking on potty training, Susan says:
Firstly, children are very intuitive to parent’s stress levels, Susan states, so it is great to stay positive about the entire experience (and try not to be too frustrated when it goes wrong!).
Secondly, Susan says that in order to learn a new skill, a period of stability is needed, so dedicating a good amount of time to make the process work is vital - it won’t happen overnight, and patience is going to be key!
Lastly, Susan suggests it’s not uncommon for children to master potty training in one environment and not in another, so although little ones might be getting it right at home, parents must not be disheartened when hiccups in road happen outside of the house - the rest will then follow!
The bundle comes with flashcards, the Potette, a reusable liner and a little bag to store it in,

Meet the Head teacher of years 7-11 at d’Overbroeck’s school in Oxford
Nick Haines has recently moved into the role of Head of Years 7-11 at d’Overbroeck’s, which is the day school for children aged 11-16. d’Overbroeck’s also has an International School for overseas students aged 13-16, and a self-contained Sixth Form centre. Years 7-11 at d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational day school, drawing students from the local area and further afield. Years 7-11 covers a broad curriculum from Year 7 through to GCSE. Students are encouraged to enjoy learning, to be curious and think outside the box. d’Overbroeck’s value choice, engagement and enjoyment, and offer plenty of opportunities for students to try new things and develop their talents. We asked Nick a few questions:
1. WHAT AND / OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A TEACHER AND LATER A HEADTEACHER?
I’ve always loved learning and had some great teachers who made space for students to explore ideas within and beyond their subject areas, often simply for the joy of it. This was the kind of teacher I wanted to be, and I was delighted when I joined d’Overbroeck’s to find it full of such people, as well as students who were excited to learn in that way. During my career I’ve loved working with teachers and students to realise that ambition; becoming a Headteacher wasn’t part of a grand plan, but when the opportunity arose to lead such an incredible community, I really couldn’t say no!
2. WHAT DOES BEING A HEADTEACHER OF A SCHOOL MEAN TO YOU?
Simply, creating and sustaining an environment where everyone in our community can thrive. d’Overbroeck’s has a distinctive and cherished ethos; my responsibility is to sustain and preserve this whilst at the same time developing the school in response to a changing world.
3. HOW DO YOU THINK A HEADTEACHER OF A SCHOOL CAN MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE TO AN INDIVIDUAL STUDENT?
I am fortunate that we have some of the best teachers in the industry working at d’Overbroeck’s; a big part of my job is simply enabling them to do theirs and then watching the magic happen! That said, being a small school, I have the privilege of getting to know every student and family on an individual level. We’re a school that is highly responsive to students’ ideas, opinions, and needs: I am regularly visited either by School Council representatives or individual students, and take great pleasure in helping them to fulfil their aims and ambitions for themselves or for the school as a whole.
4. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO PARENTS LOOKING AT PRIVATE EDUCATION FOR THE FIRST TIME?
It’s essential to find the right school for your family. Oxfordshire has a huge variety of school options on offer: but always bear in mind that schools are made of people, not buildings or brochures! Visit, ask questions, visit again, and ask more questions…
5. D’OVERBROECK’S IS MADE UP OF THREE SCHOOL SITES: YEARS 7 - 11, THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL AND THE SIXTH FORM. WHAT BENEFITS ARE THERE FOR HAVING THESE INDIVIDUAL SITES?
We describe ourselves as a mushroom shaped school; our small Years 7-11 and International School sites feed into our Sixth Form, where these students are joined by whole community of new prospective friends from a range of other schools and countries.
So our 7-11 students develop their love of learning in a cosy, nurturing setting of friends who live nearby, our GCSE international students take their first steps into the UK system surrounded by friends going through the same learning journey, and then these students all move into a diverse mix of nationalities, life experiences and personalities. By the end of Sixth Form these students have been prepared for an enormous range of future routes and opportunities, which they’ll share with friends for life, whether they met aged 11 or 16.
6. IN NOVEMBER 2022, D’OVERBROECK’S WAS AWARDED THE TITLE OF A ‘MICROSOFT SHOWCASE SCHOOL’ IN RECOGNITION OF YOUR EXCELLENCE IN DIGITAL INNOVATION FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING. HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU THINK DIGITAL INNOVATION IS FOR YOUR STUDENTS’ BOTH NOW AND FOR THEIR FUTURE?
Microsoft describes its Showcase Schools as those which “…create student-centered, immersive, and inclusive experiences that inspire lifelong learning, stimulating development of essential future-ready skills so students are empowered to achieve more.”
For us it’s about recognising that our students will be facing a very competitive world ahead of them, and to prepare them for this we need to stay agile and on top of developments in the educational sector. Today’s students need new strengths and unprecedented versatility to navigate their futures. The technology we use, the spaces in which we learn, and the systems we use can all help develop these skills and reflect these aims.
7. WHAT WERE YOUR PREVIOUS ROLES, AND WHAT LASTING MEMORIES HAVE YOU TAKEN FROM THOSE SCHOOLS?
I started my career at the Judd School, Tonbridge, and have been at d’Overbroeck’s since 2010. During my time here I’ve been Head of Mathematics, and then Deputy Academic Director, leading on teaching-andlearning and staff development. My central takeaway from all of these is that if we begin every conversation with “What will be the best outcome for our students, and how do we achieve it?”, then we’ll rarely go too far wrong.
8. WHAT IS YOUR REAL-LIFE SUPERPOWER? Necessarily, speed! I’m rarely at my desk for long: there’s far too much interesting stuff going on and I don’t want to miss any of it.
9. RELAXING HOLIDAY OR ACTIVE HOLIDAY?
With three small children of my own, holidays are always active!
Helping your child with school transition
While moving to a new class or new school can be challenging for kids, most adapt to changes within the first few weeks as routines are established and new friendships formed. Preparation is a key component which can make a huge difference to the readiness of your child. At the same time, emotional resilience greatly helps children adapt to different environments, routines and social dynamics. So, how can parents support children through their journey of change and uncertainty?
Encourage open communication
Open communication is essential in helping children express their worries and concerns. Encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings and validate their emotions. Set aside dedicated time and spaces for these conversations. This can be as simple as the walk or drive home from school or over a snack at the end of the day.
Develop problem solving skills
Encourage your child to identify potential challenges and discuss possible solutions together. This will help them feel more prepared while developing their own problem-solving skills. Encourage your child to be open to new experiences, emphasising the importance of adaptability in overcoming challenges.
Model resilience
By modelling resilience you provide a powerful example for your child to follow, helping them develop the emotional strength needed to adapt to new experiences. Give examples of your own coping strategies, taking care to maintain a positive spin. Show your child that change is a natural part of life and discuss the exciting opportunities that the new academic year will bring.
STARTING PRIMARY SCHOOL
Starting primary school can be an exciting yet daunting new chapter for you and your child. The most useful thing you can do is prepare them ahead of their first day:
• Practise getting dressed, using the toilet, opening a lunchbox, using cutlery.
• Play games which involve turn taking and social skills.
• Help your child recognise their name to help them keep track of clothes and find their peg.
• Acknowledge your own feelings and anxieties. This is the start of your child’s journey away from you and that can be challenging. Recognise this is normal but try to keep those emotions away from your child.
• Talk about your child’s day, emphasising the positive but be ready to help them with any worries they might express. Make time to talk and listen.
• Expect teething troubles and always speak to the teacher if you have particular concerns.
By Lisa Wander and Catherine LobleEmphasise the importance of self-care
Establish healthy routines including regular sleep, exercise and healthy eating. Encourage participation in a range of out of school activities that they enjoy. This will help them better manage their own stress and maintain a positive outlook during times of change.
Celebrate success
Acknowledge and celebrate your child’s achievements and milestones during transition. Praising their ability to overcome challenges boosts confidence. Keep the open communication going so it becomes a habit. Children need to know you will always be behind them through and beyond their teens. Remain patient and understanding as each child’s experience is unique and developing emotional resilience takes time and practice.

The Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts
The performing arts is a wide and vibrant industry including theatre, music, dance, film making and more. With its many facets, the performing arts can open up a world of possibility for young people to develop and grow in an environment that is safe and supportive. By providing a platform for creativity, fostering confidence, and promoting a sense of connectedness and community, the performing arts play a vital role in shaping the lives of young people.
Be Confident
share their passion. Connecting with their peers, young people form bonds, deepen their empathy, and develop compassion for the world around them.
Be Yourself, Be Amazing
Confidence is fundamental to a young person’s development; it enables them to have a go, try new things and succeed and fail in a safe environment. The performing arts naturally helps young people build confidence as they practice routines, perform in front of fellow students, family and friends, and receive and act on feedback. All this work culminating in the thrill of performing for an audience, with the knowledge that they have built the skills to create great work.
Be Creative
Of course, the performing arts are an outlet for creativity! Whether learning a dance routine, acting in a play, or pitching a film idea, the performing arts gives young people an opportunity to use their imagination and express themselves. Flexing their creative muscles allows young people to think outside the box and find creative solutions to problems they encounter in their work but also in their everyday lives.
Be Connected
There are very few industries that rely on teamwork as much as the performing arts. Whether they are rehearsing, performing, or filming, the performing arts allows young people to connect with others who
At The Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts, we believe that the performing arts can have a huge, positive impact on the lives of young people. Every week, our students learn new skills and make new friends though our three core modules, Comedy & Drama, Film & Television and Musical Theatre. Through our ethos of ‘Be Yourself, Be Amazing’ our students have the confidence to put themselves out there, the creativity to think differently and the community to feel supported whilst doing so.
