Our School Year
Sponsored feature
Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle de Londres The Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle de Londres (LFCG) is an internationallyrenowned educational establishment, offering wide-ranging French, Bilingual and British courses to 3-18 year-olds across four sites.
I
n addition to the academic curriculum, each of the Lycée’s four sites engages in enriching sports, arts, languages, literature, science and charity events throughout the school year. Winter Term January - March This winter term, partnering with Paris 2024 Olympic & Paralympic Games, sports champions will give lectures or lead sport workshops; all covered by the School’s own International Young Reporters. Echoing this in May, a sports and media team will go to Athens’ International Youth Games. In March, a Mathematics festival offers exhibitions, talks and workshops. An annual poetry competition attracts keen submissions from pupils, parents and staff alike. Spring Term April - July In April, the Festival of Arab language & culture sees pupils from Y9 to Y13 who are studying Arabic perform poems, songs and dances to an audience of parents, pupils and staff. Late April, the whole school is engaged in Earth Week for five days of action, raising awareness of sustainable development issues and goals. Selected upon auditions held in the autumn, secondary pupils take their music, singing, dance and comedy talents to the stage in the May Talent Show. There is also a careers fair for Y10 pupils, and many school trips both in the UK and abroad for pupils from primary to Y13. The school runs conferences and workshops throughout a European Fortnight in May to raise pupils’ awareness of Europe’s history, institutions, challenges, cultural wealth, cuisines and linguistic diversity. Music is celebrated termly with rock and pop outdoor concerts given by students in Y11 to Y13 who follow an optional music class. In May, students of drama, dance, visual arts, classical and contemporary music come together for a grand-scale performance with a Lycée symphonic orchestra at Cadogan Hall. In honour of 18th June 1940 appeal, Y11 pupils form a jury, awarding the De Gaulle literary prize to a novel from a selection of four recently-published fictional works whose authors they will have met during the year. June is also time for exams, encompassing the French Brevet and Baccalaureate, with GCSEs and A-Levels for British section students. In the meantime, French section Y11 students spend a week in various organisations for their first work experience. 6
The year finishes with Sports Days, various tournaments, graduation ceremonies and primary school fairs. Autumn Term September - December The new school year starts with the National School Sports Day organised in Paris by the UNSS (National Union for School Sports) where pupils meet for inter-school competitions. There is also the ZENOS Tour where pupilteams combine their running distances to virtually connect all the cities with French schools in the North-Western Europe and Scandinavia area of the AEFE (Agency for French Education Abroad); a worldwide network of over five hundred schools.
Open Day Events The Lycée educates pupils of over 40 nationalities, from Nursery to Baccalauréat/A-Levels. The sites are in South Kensington, Fulham, Clapham and Ealing. In November, each school holds its own Open Day Events; where parents can experience the vibrant international education offer.
October field trips provide world experience; for example students learning Italian have travelled to Lampedusa to meet with students, refugees and volunteers in commemoration of the tragic asylum-seekers’ shipwreck in 2013. In December, following open day season, it is time for parent-teacher meetings and the higher education fair. The school also takes part in Children in Need and the French overseas Telethon fundraiser. While the school is brimming with concerts, shows, art displays or, weather permitting, snow-related activities, the Lycée charity, Justice au Cœur organises the Christmas Bazaar. Funds raised are given to charities supporting less privileged children and young people.

Growing sunflowers and learning maths? By Usha Patel Parents often ask me how to get their child interested in maths because ‘they just don’t get it.’ Luckily, they can give their child a lot of help at home in just a few easy steps. Maths language It’s essential to keep maths language simple to build a strong foundation. Use words like ‘more’ for addition and ‘less’ for subtraction in everyday situations. For instance, you can introduce these concepts during meals: more roast potatoes, less sprouts! Repeatedly using these words alongside tangible materials helps children gradually grasp mathematical concepts. Maths talk There are many words to describe each mathematical function. When you teach your child the basic concepts of ‘more’ and ‘less,’ you are implicitly teaching them maths and how to think mathematically. By doing this, you are combining logic, sequence and memory. Having the basics in place can also allow you to introduce more words to describe the same function: ‘add,’ ‘together,’ ‘plus’ and ‘addition’ all mean the same. Develop sequential thought processes Sequential thought processes are fundamental to understanding logical thinking. Parents can encourage these by discussing daily activities and routines with their children. By reflecting on how one event follows another, children can grasp the concept of sequencing, which is a vital skill in mathematics. Establish logical thinking Children also need to develop logical thinking abilities. Fun activities like baking a cake or growing sunflowers can help introduce logic to young minds. These activities require following
a series of linear steps. Discussing each phase from beginning to end helps children understand the importance of logical thinking, which can extend to organising their school bags or planning for sleepovers. Check memory working memory can hinder a child’s ability to hold and manipulate information during calculations. Playing memory instance, counting games such as counting the number of cars on the way home can reveal memory strengths and weaknesses. Finally, learning should be fun. When we are relaxed, we are more predisposed to absorbing what we learn. The funnier the delivery, the quicker it will stick. If your child is struggling and back into maths! Usha Patel is a neurocognitive therapist at Raviv Practice London. If you need help to put fun into maths for your child, you can contact Usha at www.ravivpracticelondon.co.uk.

Children can learn to count by, but comprehending number value represents a distinct skill set. Understanding value requires the capability to compare two or more numbers. Comparative knowledge can only be applied with a firm grasp of linear processes. Whether they are growing a sunflower or making a sandwich, precise steps exist to achieve the end goal. When assigned the task of implementing each stage, children can observe that they are systematically progressing towards their goal. Upon reflection, children can discern the steps and understand why those steps are necessary to achieve the desired results. The key is to discuss each step in the process, emphasising what comes first, second, third, fourth and so on. By repeating the experience, children can perceive how individual components are interconnected within the whole. Crucially, a specific order must be followed to attain the desired outcome. Linear processing facilitates teaching sequence, logic, mathematics and comparative skills.

Understanding multiple intelligences By Zuzu Jordan Look up the word intelligent in the thesaurus and you will find words like ‘smart ’, ‘clever ’ and ‘bright .’ Traditionally in schools, pupils with regular high scores in academic or IQ tests are recognised as intelligent. Yet, as a society, we marvel at great artists, musicians and Olympians for their outstanding talent. How intelligence is measured is a debatable topic and leaves many people divided. Howard Gardner (a well know theorist) proposed that there are many types of intelligences. Logical relates to someone who can carry out mathematical problems, hypothesise and investigate scientifically. Linguistic describes someone who is considered word smart and can easily learn languages. Spatial refers to artists and architects who can visualise with their mind’s eye. Kinaesthetic is being able to use the whole body or parts of the body exceptionally well, such as a dancer or athlete. Musical refers to someone who can perform, compose and appreciate musical patterns. Interpersonal intentions and motivations. Intrapersonal refers to strong self-awareness and using this understanding in everyday life.
activities. What are they like outside? Do they naturally tap out rhythms in the car whilst the radio is playing? Celebrate what they CAN do so they develop a sense of pride. Does your child know which intelligences they lean towards? Play to their strengths. For example, if your child is spatially smart, ask them to draw what they are learning. If they show signs of naturalistic intelligence, give them sticks and other natural objects to create patterns and images. Children are required to learn to read. Choose books that tap into their interests and intelligences. Discuss your child’s strengths with their teachers. The more they understand your child’s leanings, the better lesson planning can involve multiple intelligences. Play games such as Junior Scrabble, Monopoly, making sound

experiences and activities.
Use online quizzes which help identify children’s intelligences.
How do we support our children in harnessing their intelligences?
Read books that help children understand the importance of working on their intelligences, for example You are Awesome by Matthew Syed.
Not all educational establishments will fully cater for your child’s intelligences but parents can play a vital role by using some of these ideas at home: Start by observing what your child enjoys across a range of

EARLY YEARS
Homebirth – The Advantages Zoe Watson – Midwife and expert speaker at The Baby Show (www.thebabyshow.co.uk)
H
omebirth rates have increased over the past five years in the United Kingdom. Many expectant parents are drawn to the idea of giving birth in the comfort of their own homes, surrounded by familiar faces and a relaxed atmosphere. The Birthplace Study, conducted by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in 2011, shed light on the benefits of homebirth in the UK. This study, involving thousands of women, healthcare providers, and midwives, provides valuable insights into the advantages of choosing homebirth as a birthing option. Lower Intervention Rates One of the most significant benefits of homebirth highlighted by the Birthplace Study is the lower intervention rate compared to hospital births. The study found
that women who gave birth at home were less likely to undergo medical interventions such as caesarean sections, forceps deliveries, or vacuum extractions. This lower intervention rate is attributed to the relaxed and supportive home environment, which allows labour to progress naturally and at its own pace. This reduced need for medical interventions can lead to quicker recoveries for mothers and healthier outcomes for babies. Increased Satisfaction Another compelling aspect of homebirth revealed by the study is the higher satisfaction levels among mothers who chose this option. Giving birth at home allows expectant parents to create a personalised birth plan and environment that suits their preferences. The comfort of one's

home, the presence of a familiar support system, and the absence of the clinical hospital setting contribute to a more positive birthing experience. This increased satisfaction can have lasting emotional benefits for both parents and can foster a stronger bond with their newborn. Improved Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes The Birthplace Study also highlighted favourable maternal and neonatal outcomes associated with homebirths. Contrary to common misconceptions, homebirths do not compromise the safety of mothers and babies when appropriately managed by trained midwives. The study found no significant differences in the rates of adverse outcomes, such as perinatal mortality or neonatal morbidity, between homebirths and hospital births for low-risk pregnancies. In fact, homebirths were associated with lower rates of certain complications, such as severe perineal trauma. Family-Centred Care Homebirths strongly emphasise family-centred care, allowing partners and family members to actively participate in the birth process. This approach fosters a sense of empowerment and involvement among loved ones, promoting a holistic and supportive birthing environment. In contrast, hospital births may limit the involvement of family members due to hospital policies and regulations.
Reduced Stress and Anxiety The familiar and comfortable surroundings of the home significantly reduce the stress and anxiety often associated with hospital births. The Birthplace Study found that women who chose homebirths reported lower stress levels during labour. Reduced stress can lead to more straightforward and less painful labours, improving birth experiences overall. Greater Autonomy Choosing homebirth grants expectant parents greater autonomy in decision-making during labour and childbirth. They have the flexibility to create a birth plan that aligns with their preferences and values. This autonomy extends to choices about pain relief methods, birthing positions, and who will be present during the birth. The Birthplace Study underscores the importance of women feeling in control of their birthing experience.
Conclusion Dreamy homebirth anecdotes and the positive study findings highlight the advantages of choosing a homebirth. However, it's crucial to note that homebirth may not be suitable for all pregnancies, and the decision should be made in consultation with healthcare providers. As the popularity of homebirth continues to grow, expectant parents need to be wellinformed about their options to make the best choice for their unique circumstances and individual preferences.

Developing your child’s social skills Some children may find socialising more difficult than others. If your little one struggles or seems reluctant to be with other people, they may need some support to learn social skills. Here are some things you can do to help. Practise talking Chat about what you are doing, seeing or feeling to help build your child’s vocabulary and exposure to conversations. Role play, games and storytelling are all good for developing language. Model good manners, such as saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ This will encourage children to act this way with their peers. Listen and take turns Children learn both verbal and non-verbal skills from the people around them. Try showing them what good listening looks like through your own behaviour and using games like Simon Says. Find ways to make taking turns fun. Choose an object and tell your family they need to be holding it when they talk. Pass it between you. If your child is a little older, take it in turns to make up funny sounds as if you are having an alien conversation. Show the importance of body language Use eye contact and body language with your child. Experiment by asking them to talk about something while you use poor body language. This could be crossed arms, looking away, fidgeting or frowning. Ask them how your actions made them feel. Then show them attentive body language. Take it in turns. Teach them about personal space Consider teaching your child about personal space. Ask them to put their hands on their hips and stick their elbows out to understand their personal space. Introduce the idea of boundaries by asking first if you can come into their space for a hug.
Learning moments in play It can be helpful to spot opportunities for learning social skills in your child’s play. For instance, you can ask your child to help with tasks and see if they’ll try activities with others, to learn teamwork skills. You can also teach your child positive ways of responding to winning, losing or not getting their way. Show them you understand when they’re upset but help them see what the positives could be. Might the outcome have made their friend happy? You can also show them what sharing looks like when playing at home. If your child hits or bites, help them recognise how others feel when they’re hurt. Praise your child when you see them playing well. You can also gently encourage your child to apologise if they do hurt someone during play. If they don’t feel comfortable doing this, model apologising for them until they feel more confident. You could say something like: ‘Freddie feels sad that he’s hurt you and he wants to say he’s very sorry.’
Develop their emotional skills When you help your child understand, express and cope with emotions, it helps them recognise the emotions of others and develops empathy. Teach them to problem-solve, guiding them with questions such as ‘What could you do?’ or ‘What could you say?’ Try to avoid answering for them. You can also talk to your child about friendships and what it is to be a good friend. If you can, arrange and support opportunities for socialising. With thanks to Action for Children (www.actionforchildren.org. uk) for this article. For further support on child development, visit its Parent Talk website at www.parents.actionforchildren. org.uk

Listen and learn Develop your child’s listening and concentration skills by engaging them with short, simple instructions and fun ‘listen and play’ games: Musical statues The old party favourite; dance or jump around to music and when it stops, freeze! Simple and fun, especially when other children play along. March and sleep Grab a noisy object and a quieter object; a simple wooden spoon as drumstick and rattly cereal box will do. When you use the noisy object, get your child to march around the room. When they hear the quieter one, they lie on the floor and pretend to sleep. Swap roles so your child can make the noises, test your skills and learn about taking turns. What did you hear? Hide a selection of noisy objects under a blanket and make a sound with one of them. Your child has to guess which one made the sound. Gradually increase the number of objects to up the challenge. Try making sounds from several toys or objects at once.

HEALTH
Yoga is the Medicine Your Body Needs After Birth By Alexandra DeSiato and Lauren Sacks (Adapted from Whole Mama Yoga, HCI, August 2023) As you settle into being a new mother in the postpartum stage, your desire to move your body safely may increase. That’s fantastic, and that’s where the gentle movements of yoga can help. In our book, Whole Mama Yoga, we cover the basics of safe movement postpartum.
D
uring this part of the motherhood journey, your body is healing. Your body has just gone through something metamorphic (pregnancy and birth!) As a result, there is a transformation that must happen on this side of pregnancy, too. Many of the postpartum body changes require something that you can’t force: time. Healing doesn’t happen overnight, and recovery takes time. You’re also healing and recovering while getting less sleep and being more “on” all the time. It’s no wonder that you may not feel like yourself! As you start to move more and begin the healing journey, yoga poses and movements are an excellent modality. Not only can the poses of yoga being strength-building, the breathwork and meditative qualities of yoga
(the tools of yoga, we call them) are incredibly helpful during the early, frazzled days of caring for your little one. Breathing deep, full breaths (diaphragmatic breathing) can help you reconnect to your body, settle your mind, and feel more present. The way yoga can help, physically There’s not a lot on the “don’t do this!” list, but there are a few things you may want to avoid for a little while, and there may be a few things you want to do more of to help your body build strength in key areas.
It’s helpful to avoid movements that create intra-abdominal pressure. Because all pregnant women experience diastasis recti (DR), a gap in the connective tissue between the muscles of the rectus abdominis (6-pack muscles), postpartum it’s wise to avoid crunches, crunchlike movements, and any movements that cause loss of integration of the core muscles. (Consider that even sitting up in bed is a crunch-like movement; during the exhausting early days of being postpartum, try to remember to roll to one side, and use your hands to support you to sit up.) If you feel like your belly is distending in any pose or exercise, skip the movement. Simple core engagement (movements or shapes that are not crunches!) will help you gain strength gently. Do a little to start, and gradually add duration and intensity. A yoga practice before and during pregnancy may have focused on opening and building flexibility. In the postpartum period, you’ll want to pivot to contracting, healing, and building strength. That will mean focusing on dynamic movements for your hips and seat: things like active bridge pose, variations on squat, and inner-thigh and outer-hip strengtheners are useful during this period. One yoga exploration to try: place a yoga block between your thighs (while standing or lying on your back with your knees bent) and focus on squeezing into the midline of your body, firing up your inner thighs, pelvic floor, glutes, and core. Postpartum, you may notice that your upper body is tight, and your shoulders are rounding; you’re suddenly carrying and feeding a very heavy baby in the front plane of your body all the time! To combat this, try poses that open the front of your chest and that strengthen your upper back. Reaching your hands behind your back and rolling your shoulders open will do the former, while a familiar yoga pose like downward-facing dog can help with the latter. Being a mum to a little baby is a lot! We don’t honor the postpartum experience enough. There are many physical postpartum changes no one prepares you for or talks about. But ultimately, it’s helpful to know that your body will grow stronger and more familiar with time. Right now, you’re in recovery! And yoga— breathing and movements—can help.

Make reindeer cupcakes Families asked Emily Leary, multi-award-winning food, lifestyle and parenting writer, presenter, photographer and author of A Mummy Too (www.amummytoo.co.uk) to share her scrumptious chocolate reindeer cupcake recipe with us. Fun and easy to make, you’ll love the chocolate sponge, rich chocolate frosting and the simple toppings which make the cute Christmas reindeer faces.

Preheat the oven to 180C (160C fan). Put the caster sugar and softened butter in a large mixing bowl and beat with an electric mixer or by hand until creamy.
Crack the eggs into the bowl. Add the milk. Beat again until just combined.
Fold everything together until the batter is smooth and even.
Line a 12-hole muffin tray with muffin cases. Divide the batter evenly between them, making sure to level off so that the cupcakes rise evenly.

Bake for about 20 minutes or until risen and firm. A skewer pushed into the centre of a cupcake towards the middle of the tray should come out clean. Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely.
Make the buttercream. Put the softened butter in a large bowl and whisk until creamy.
Transfer to a piping bag fitted with a French tip or open star nozzle and pipe tall swirls on top of the cake, retaining a little frosting to use as glue in the final steps. Add the reindeer details. Place a giant chocolate button on top of each cupcake, just below the centre. Dab the back of each Smartie with a little frosting and fix each on to the centre of a chocolate button.
Position two candy eyes above each chocolate button. Finally, break one side of each of the pretzels (or leave the whole) and push them into the frosted tops of each of the cupcakes to form antlers.
Sift in the flour and cocoa powder.
Sift in the icing sugar, cocoa powder, then add the milk and hot water. Start whisking them together, slowly at first and then building speed once the icing sugar is incorporated. It will take several minutes of whisking to get a light and smooth frosting.

Christmas Day?
In collaboration with
Christmas mushroom and lentil wellington Have you ever hosted a Christmas dinner for a vegetarian? Or perhaps you are a vegetarian or vegan yourself? Then you'll know how tricky it can be to find the perfect vegetarian or vegan Christmas main course. This golden puff pastry wellington pie is layered with hummus, spinach, mushroom, and cashew nut paté, along with a blend of succulent, thyme-flavoured mushrooms and lentils. Serve it alongside roast potatoes, a selection of vegetables, and a rich onion gravy. Serves 6 - 8
Prepare 20 mins
2 tbsp olive oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 1kg chestnut mushrooms, chopped 1 tsp thyme 4 tbsp red wine ½ vegetable stock cube 100g cashew nuts
Cook 25 mins
1. Preheat the oven to 200c gas mark 6 and take the pastry out of the fridge. 2. In a large frying pan or wok, saute the onion and garlic in 1 tbsp olive oil until soft, then add the mushrooms and cook gently until they are soft too. Add the thyme, red wine and crumble in the half stock cube. Gently cook until all the juices are gone. Season well with salt and pepper. 3. Whizz up a third of the mushrooms in a blender or food processor with the oats and nuts until you have a pate.
2 tbsp porridge oats
4. Pour the lentils into the mushrooms still in the pan and mix well.
200g tinned lentils, rinsed and
5. Rinse the spinach in a colander, then pour a kettle full of boiling
drained well 1 ready rolled puff pastry 100g spinach 6 tbsp hummus Salt and pepper
water over it to wilt it. Run cold water over it to cool it, then squeeze out as much liquid as you can before drying off in kitchen paper. 6. Carefully unroll the pastry and place it on a large baking tray, still on the baking parchment it was rolled in. 7. Spread the hummus across one long side of the pastry leaving a border. Top with spinach and then the mushroom pate. Top with the mushrooms and lentils and brush a little water around the edges of the pastry. Pull the pastry over the filling to make a large sausage roll shape. Crimp the edges with a fork and use a knife to cut diagonal slits in the top. Brush with the rest of the olive oil. 8. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden. 9. Serve with roast potatoes, vegetables and onion gravy.
