So we’ve put on our coats and headed out the house to find some of the best places in the North West to take your little ones to look at baby animals and birds and discovered some of the best places in the North West to buy local produce. sorts of things you should be looking for when choosing a school for your child, while in Health and Beauty we quiz the experts on what we should all be doing to get fit for summer.
On a more serious note, in Bumps and Babies, we take a look at how much families are spending on childcare costs per year and explore where new mums can turn for support, while Jools Oliver tells us all about her new clothing range at Mothercare in Local Services. And if your child is enthusiastically scratching on the violin or the tin whistle is making you want to impose a semiquaver ban in your house, you may be heartened to read our piece in Clubs and Classes about the ways in which learning a musical instrument can benefit your child. In Education, we take a look at the worrying news about increasing violence in primary schools and think about the
And if you’re stumped for ideas of what to do for your little man’s big day, look no further, in Parties and Playtime we take a look at some unusual party ideas for boys. If you’re feeling lucky, you’ll love the fantastic mix of competitions in this issue, while the thrifty amongst you will enjoy getting stuck into the money off vouchers on the back page. And of course, the magazine is jam-packed with ideas of things to do in Liverpool. Mums in the North West need to work 15.6 weeks to break even on childcare costs New research has shown that mums in the North West have to work 15.6 weeks a year – more than three months - simply to break even on childcare costs. Child Trust Fund provider Family Investments created this research after analysing childminder and nursery costs from local authorities and looking at earnings data from the ONS. The figures are based on a working week of 36.3 hours. They found that the average cost of childcare per hour in the North West was £3.22, while the annual cost of childcare was estimated as £6,086. The average female hourly earnings in the North West was £10.97, meaning that a typical woman would have to work for 15.2 weeks a year before she started earning money ‘for herself’. The research also found that mothers in the South of England typically have to work 42 hours a year more than those in the North of England to cover their childcare costs. Kate Moore, head of savings and investments at Family Investments said, ‘In the North versus South stakes, affordability of care means mums in the North have to work fewer hours before their care costs are met and the difference is
equivalent to a week a year. The differences in affordability of childcare are even greater when you dig down and look at the regions with mums in the West Midlands having to work significantly fewer hours before they break even on their childcare costs than those in the South West.’ She added ‘These figures highlight the very significant costs mums face if they choose to return to work after maternity leave and the fact that they will spend up to four months of the year simply working towards these costs.’ ‘What really jumps out from these figures is both the scale of the costs involved and the disparities in local affordability. It is important that the Government address this disparity which at present means parents in some parts of the country find childcare much less affordable than others. We hope that the Government acknowledge this issue in the Childcare Commission which is due to report back soon and we believe further research is required to determine why these regional disparities exist.’

Becoming a mum for the first time is undoubtedly one of the most nerve wracking moments of a woman’s life. And with the amount of times mums spend in hospitals decreasing, mums can often find themselves out on their own within 24 hours of having had their baby. So where can new parents turn for support? Undoubtedly it’s better to take a proactive approach and identify and establish your support network before you give birth.
WIN
Of course finding antenatal classes and support groups is essential and it is worth contacting your local NHS providers to see what sort of services they can provide prior to birth. As well as giving you the tools to help you get through the birth, antenatal classes are a great place to meet other new mums and potentially make lifelong friends. The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) is another great source of advice and support for new mums, while many mums find engaging with online communities such as NetMums a useful way of accessing information and even moral support from those in the same situation. Post birth, lots of other specific support is available. For example Liverpool Bambis (Babies and Mums Breastfeeding Information and Support) can provide you with all the information you need to begin and keep breastfeeding, while Personal Support Services (PSS) can provide support if you feel you may be suffering from post-natal depression. If dealing with a variety of different organisations and agencies doesn’t appeal, there is always the option to look into creating a support service that is tailor made to you. For example, the Twilight Midwife provides bespoke support to new mums. The reasons women may choose to pay for this sort of dedicated support are various. Fran Bosanquet of the Twilight Midwife, commented: “the anxieties around pregnancy require time and explanation from your midwife and our poor NHS midwives are often stretched to the limit; however, here at twilight we can give you all the additional time and support you need”.

You and your child will be spending lots of time in their nursery in the early years of his or her life, so making sure it’s well kitted out and a pleasant place to be is essential. These tips can help you get it right first time... Choose your cot: This will be the heart of your child’s nursery so it’s important to get it right. If you are using an older cot remember to ensure the slats are vertical so your baby can’t use them as a ladder once he or she is standing and that they’re close enough together to prevent your child getting his or her head stuck. Colour: Choose your colour scheme wisely. Pink all over might seem like a good idea when you first find out you’re having a girl but unless you like all things bubblegum-hued you may quickly tire of it. A neutral theme is often best, and gives you more scope to change the nursery as your child grows. Accessories: Music is great for soothing children to sleep, so consider adding a radio or CD player. It might also help keep you sane during those late night feeds. Soft lamps will make the nursery cosy and soothing.

Getting your nursery right...
(the non-edible kind!)
Temperature: Invest in a good room thermometer to make sure the room is always at the right temperature for baby. Nursing chair: Buy a good-sized comfy chair for you or your partner to sit in while nursing your child. Good back support is essential as you’ll be spending a lot of time in it. Curtains: Get good quality thick curtains or blinds to stop the sunlight waking your baby any earlier than strictly necessary. Adding a black out blind may help your child sleep during the day if it’s a particularly sunny bedroom. Be sensible about storage: For such little people babies come with an amazing amount of clutter, so think how you can maximise storage space. Buy a cot with drawers underneath and invest in an ottoman. These can store huge amounts of toys and double as a chair. Remember that if you’re stuck for space the top of a chest of drawers can easily double as a changing unit.

their studies, before and after school, within their preferred curriculum areas with specialist support and materials close to hand.
The new design incorporates the best of the traditions and heritage of Notre Dame Everton Valley (including some beautiful legacy items such as the chapel’s stained glassed windows) with 21st century teaching and learning spaces.
The new school is also co-located with Everton Park Sports Centre and will provide staff and students with access to a Lifestyles gym, swimming pool, sports hall, exercise studios and newly installed, external 3G sports pitches.
These spaces will be specially equipped to ensure flexibility as well as the highest standards of teaching, whether in 1:1 tuition in English or Maths, small group work, class work or whole year activities.
Attention to detail, throughout the design process, has ensured the spirit of Notre Dame is carried over into the new building with an emphasis upon spaces that support the good working relations, high quality education and strong community that lie at the heart of the Notre Dame vision.
The new site will boast state of the art science, computer and design spaces fitted with high specification equipment and hardware. In addition to this, the College’s existing strengths in Humanities subjects will be enhanced by a purpose-built Geology laboratory and multi-wall projection and immersion facilities in History, allowing students to access these subject areas in greater depth.

World Book Day is an international celebration of all things literary which aims to get children reading. Now celebrated in over 100 countries worldwide, the day helps to educate children about the pleasure to be found in putting down their mobile and getting stuck into a good book. This year’s World Book Day is Thursday 7th March. In an attempt to inspire the next generation of bookworms, all children will be given a £1 token to buy one of eight £1 World Book Day books, meaning every child in the land gets a free book.

Primary schools more violent than secondary schools?
Welcome to World Book Day!
There are books suitable for all ages and tastes, including Tony Robinson’s Funny Inventions – a look at some of history’s wackiest inventions and The Chocolate Box Girls: Bittersweet by Cathy Cassidy, which with its romantic story is like chick lit for teenagers. All children need to do is take their token to a participating bookshop and claim their chosen book. For information and information about how you can get involved, visit www.worldbookday.com
While we may think of primary schools as a safe haven of sugar paper and playtimes, new data from the Department of Education shows that more children are expelled from primary schools for assaulting teachers than from secondary schools. The statistics showed that 8,030 primary school pupils aged five to 11 were expelled in the 2010/11 teaching year. This represents a rise of 15% over four years. In 2006/7 there were 6,790 pupils excluded in state-funded primaries, of which 260 were permanent, according to the figures compiled by the Department for Education. By 2010/11, there
were 8,030, of which 200 were permanent amounting to 41 a day over the 195 school days in a year. In addition, there are more than 3,000 expulsions a year from special schools. Conversely, comprehensive schools for those aged 11 to 18 saw exclusions for violence drop by more than a third. In 2006/7, there were 9,230 youngsters excluded, with 670 permanently, compared to just 6,060 with 330 permanent in 2010/11.

Whether your child is attending primary school for the first time or moving up to secondary, choosing your child’s school is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. Aside from Ofsted reports and prospectuses, there are a great many things you should take into consideration when choosing a school. Of course, results may seem like a good indicator of a school’s effectiveness but they may not tell the whole story. For example outstanding results in an affluent catchment area may be much less impressive than reasonable results in an area with an intake of pupils from a more deprived background or with English as a second lanuage. Try to find out the story behind the results rather than just looking at the results themselves. The school that is right for your child is also dependent on their particular abilities and interests and their personality. While trying to get them into a grammar school may seem like a good idea, if they are not natural academics then even if they make it in, they may not much enjoy the school experience. Similarly, the fact that many schools now have specialist status might give your child the chance to further develop their existing talents or interests.
EDUCATION
What to look for when choosing a school for your child The sort of extracurricular activities that are on offer at a school should also help to inform your decision. If your child is sports mad then he or she may be happiest at a school which offers a range of after school sports clubs to help them burn off energy. It’s also worth thinking about the sort of journey your child will have to undertake, even if you won’t be taking them to school yourself. Sending them to a brilliant school on the other side of town may seem manageable at first, but asking your child to do an adult-style commute, and then do homework to boot may become increasingly stressful and have a negative impact on their academic achievement. Another key question to ask a school is about their staff turnover. If teachers stay a year or less and then leave, this could suggest that behaviour is an issue at the school, or that teachers do not feel fully supported by management. All of this could lead to instability that could affect your child’s education.

CLUBS & CLASSES
Getting children fit: Yoga and Pilates While many people think that for children to keep fit they need to be doing laps of a school pitch covered in mud, many parents are realising that there’s nothing wrong with children taking up fitness activities which have traditionally been seen as the domain of adults. As a result of this, children’s pilates and yoga classes are now available and becoming hugely popular. These classes have the advantage of being fully inclusive, kids don’t have to be physically fit to start kidlates or yoga, though the fitness will certainly come in time. This makes it perfect for children who are put off by the competitive nature of many school-led fitness activities and would prefer a keep-fit activity that they could practice alone.
It’s also ideal for children who have specific motor problems such as dyspraxia. Children’s yoga or pilates helps children to develop their core muscles and help improve their posture and can also help them learn to concentrate particularly well, as they enjoy the meditative exercises that are a key part of these kinds of exercises. If you think your child could benefit from taking up pilates, visit www.thephysiotherapycentre.com to find out about classes near you.

Crafty Cooks
Huyton Parish Family Project, which is based in the Church Hall, Bluebell Lane, Huyton, began in September 2002 to offer support, activities and relevant courses to families in Huyton.
When we came across Crafty Cooks it seemed perfect for our needs. An opportunity for parents and their preschoolers to work together cooking healthy, nutritious but fun to make sweet and savoury foods; there were more benefits also, the fact that Jenifer our class leader brings everything ready for the session. This is a fantastic as we are still a small project with only four staff it means that we do not have to take time out of our working day for preparation for the session. We felt reassured as we know that the class leader has undergone enhanced CRB checks and the relevant hygiene safety training to ensure the families are all in safe hands. Each week starts with the children arriving, taking off their coats, putting on the smart aprons and washing their hands. Jenifer then goes on to discuss what they are cooking that week. The children have fun weighing out some of the ingredients and start to make the recipe. No time is wasted as while the food cooks Jenifer engages the families in food related activities and food tasting sessions. The children love the mix up of activities and how it flows, keeping their interest throughout the whole hour and they cannot wait to taste the food they have made, counting as it is put on the cooling trays.

Spring is a great time to take the kids out to look at baby animals and there are a range of places to do this on Merseyside, from small City Farms to famous safari parks. We look at some of the best places in the North West to help your kids get back to nature and see some furry folk at their cutest. Acorn Farm In an unlikely setting near Knowsley Industrial Estate is this little haven of animal life, featuring sheep, cattle, goats, pigs, horses, poultry, rabbits, guinea pigs and even meerkats. Children can go horseriding and other activities include milking a goat, grooming a rabbit or holding a chick. There’s plenty for adults too and mum and dad can enjoy a cup of tea in the cafe or buy an ethically reared joint of meat in the farm shop. http://www.acornfarm.co.uk
The park also boasts some new arrivals, with two new lion cubs and two little baby rhinos making their debut this year. www.knowsleysafariexperience.co.uk WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre See our over 70 different species of our feathered friends, and enjoy close-up encounters with otters and waterbirds. http://www.wwt.org.uk/visit/martin-mere
Rice Lane City Farm This is a community project that aims to bring a little bit of the countryside to the heart of Walton. Located in Walton Park cemetery, it’s a working farm with a range of livestock including pigs, goats and chickens. Children can see the animals and even sponsor any they take a shine to. The farm is open 7 days a week from 10am to 3.30pm. There is no admission charge but donations are gratefully received. www.ricelanecityfarm.co.uk Knowsley Safari Park Located just off the M57, Knowsley Safari Park is arguably the best place to see animal life on Merseyside. Restaurant Review
Sapporo Family Fun Day By Angela McCormick, Family Project Co-ordinator for Huyton Family Parish Project.
Keeping the kids entertained in a restaurant can often be a real challenge so when I heard about the Family Fun Days at Sapporo Teppanyaki, I thought it would be a great idea to schedule in a Japanese-style Sunday lunch with the family. Having already seen the show cooking at Sapporo Teppanyaki with a group of friends, I knew my Fireman Sam obsessed two year-old would be impressed with the flames that engulf the teppan grill during the Teppanyaki experience. And I was right, he was absolutely in awe of the chefs, as they entertained us by juggling with their cooking utensils and doing tricks with their ingredients. We were given a special menu, which included an adults’ menu of two courses and a glass of wine for £10.95, and a children’s menu of one course and a soft drink for £4.95. We opted for Smoked Chicken Rolls and Barbecue Spare Ribs to start, both were deliciously tasty. We ordered Chicken Yakisoba Noodles and Chicken Teriyaki for our main courses, which did not disappoint ether. The chefs also gave us some Sapporo sauté potatoes and egg fried rice, served straight from the teppan grill to accompany our main courses. We shared a couple of desserts, Japanese Yuzu Fruit Cheesecake and Chocolate Spring Rolls, which came with P&D Deli ice-cream. The cheesecake was yummy but the Chocolate-filled Spring Rolls were a real hit.

Sapporo Family Fun Day There was a great atmosphere in the restaurant, which was filled with families and children of all ages, having a good time. As well as the show cooking, which is entertainment in itself, there were lots of other activities going on to keep the kids happy. We enjoyed everything, from sushi rolling demonstrations to free face painting and balloon modelling, where the children were given some pretty impressive balloon creations to take home. I would definitely recommend the Family Fun Days at Sapporo Teppanyaki, the only downside is that there are only six in a year so make sure you stick the dates in your diary and don’t forget to book early!
This year’s remaining Sunday Family Fun Days at Sapporo Teppanyaki are on 21st April, 30th June, 18th August, 20th October and 17th November. it sapporo.co.uk or To find out more, vis . call 0151 705 3005

Could you be a foster parent? By caring for vulnerable children who have been otherwise let down by the adults around them, foster carers transform the lives and futures of the young people they care for. But could you do it? Undeniably, it’s a challenging job but the rewards can be tremendous. We spoke to Fostering for Liverpool who gave us the facts about what it’s like to be a foster parent. Q. Who can be a foster carer? A. “Foster carers reflect society; they are from many different ethnic backgrounds with different faiths. Some are single, some married, some co-habiting. Carers can be gay, heterosexual, lesbian.” Q. Can I still have a job outside the home and be a foster parent? A.“Yes. We do take into consideration the age of children you are looking to foster. Children

under school age need stability and security, the attention of one main care giver. For older children it is possible to work outside of the home if your work gives you the flexibility to meet the needs of the child you are fostering.” Q. Will I receive any financial reward? A. “All our foster carers receive an allowance to cover the true cost of caring for a child in their own home. We recognise that being a foster career is a professional task and our scale of payments for skills reflects this.” To find out more about fostering visit www.fosteringforliverpool.co.uk

Changes to Legal Aid: What you need to know Legal Aid has been a much-needed safety net for families for decades, but from this April you may find you no longer qualify for support. In an attempt to reduce the bill for Legal Aid by £350 million per year, the Coalition Government has drastically reduced its availability. Under Legal Aid the, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders (LASPO) Act 2012, which will come into effect in April of this year, public funding will no longer be available for the vast majority of divorce, financial and private law cases involving children, such as disputes between parents over residence and contact arrangements. This means that the majority of divorcing couples will either have to go to represent themselves in court or pay a solicitor out of their own pocket. While the Government hopes that these changes will lead to couples taking a less adversarial approach to separation and working harder to resolve matters through mediation, many fear that the changes represent a reduction in access to justice for large swathes of the population. Because financial support will also be available in cases in which domestic violence is a factor,
or where Social Services are involved, some commentators have also suggested that the stringent reforms may encourage some people to make spurious claims in order to still access Legal Aid. Paula Widdison, Partner and Head of family law at QualitySolicitors Jackson & Canter said “This is a major change in access to legal advice in family law as well as other areas of the law such as welfare benefits and housing cases. No matter how little money you have coming in, legal aid is just not going to be there to help you in this sort of case unless you fall within one of the very few exceptions. “We have been working hard to find ways of helping people who are worried about big legal bills to try and make it more manageable. We have introduced an online service for divorce which can be used to keep costs down and are offering fixed fees so you know exactly where you are and can budget for it. “I am sure that these cuts are going to put even more pressure on other services such as the Police, social services and the court system.”

Rising living costs and a stagnant job market means many families are struggling to make ends meet. New research from Equifax has shown that over a quarter (25.6%) of people say their biggest financial fear for this year is the rising cost of food. This was closely followed by worry about not being able to make their mortgage repayments (24%) and the increase in fuel costs restricting car usage (14.3%). In the face of such pressures, many people find themselves paying for essentials on credit. While this is never ideal, the long-term impact is exacerbated when a poor credit score means families feel forced to turn to high street money lenders, many of whom charge eye-wateringly high levels of interest. To avoid being in this situation, there are several things families can do in order to improve their credit score. Register on the electoral roll: This is used by many companies for identity verification purposes in order to combat identity fraud, so being on it makes you a better prospect for receiving credit. Get a credit card: Your problem may not be that you have a bad credit history, but simply that you have no credit history. Opening a credit card account and paying it off in full at the end of each month can help improve your score. Keep them posted: If your circumstances have changed and you have had difficulties keeping up with credit payments, then it’s

important to say so, for example if you have fallen behind on payments because of redundancy. The lender can place a Notice of Correction on your credit file explaining the background to any arrears.
Fitness and wellbeing support
Stop applying: Lenders can see how often you’ve applied for credit and too many searches in a short space of time can be perceived by lenders as you over-stretching yourself financially. If you have been refused credit, stop applying for credit cards until you’ve seen your credit report and can take remedial action.
Gyms and classes
Keep it low: Avoid carrying a balance that is more than 30% of your credit limit. Lenders may see this as excessive debt and that you may not be able to keep up with repayments. Close old accounts: Make sure any accounts you don’t need or use are closed. Financial companies are paying more attention to the total amount of credit available to an individual and dormant accounts could affect your ability to get credit.

If you want to avoid that sinking feeling when you realise you’re never going to get your body in a bikini-ready state in time for your summer holidays, it’s best to start your fitness regime now. Obviously sensible eating is a must, but any weightloss regime must incorporate exercise if it is to get results. We take a look at the advantages of three different ways to get fit:
Jenny Wray, from David Lloyd Leisure Health and Racquets Club commented: “One of the advantages of going to the gym is that it’s so flexible. Opening hours tend to be long, meaning you can fit your workout in whenever suits you and you have the choice of either exercising on your own using one of the machines, or taking part in one of the structured classes.”
The gym Becoming a member of a gym is ideal for those who know they want to fit some exercise into their week, but don’t know in advance when they’ll have time to fit in a workout. Self-discipline is required in order to make the most of your membership, but gyms are ideal for those who like a little variety in the way they work out and for those who would like the option to work out at virtually any time of day. Most gyms offer a range of different classes for those who enjoy group exercise and many gyms also offer crèches or discounts at local shops for members.
Boot camps While on first glance, boot camps may seem a little too like a turbo-powered PE lesson for comfort, the popularity of these fitness camps is on the up, with increasing numbers of people swearing by them as a way of rapidly getting results. But why is working with a professional more likely to garner results than embarking on a fitness programme alone? Pam McVitie, who runs a weight loss and well being camp for women called Fitness Camp Academy South Liverpool and runs FitFast personal training told us: “If your washing machine or your car goes on the blink, you tend to seek out an expert to fix it. But for some reason, when people decide to get fit, they think they can go it alone.
Personal Training While there’s long been a misconception that the use of personal trainers is restricted to the filthy rich and ladies that lunch, this is far from the truth. Increasing numbers of people are turning to personal trainers to help them to understand how to get more out of their workout.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Getting fit for summer: Finding a regime that works for you
Working one-to-one means that personal trainers can provide a fitness solution that exactly caters to your needs, and that slacking off is simply not an option. Kerry Russell, of Fit for Life, a company which offers personal training services across Liverpool, commented: “Many people want to get fit and lose weight, but simply don’t know what sort of exercise they should be doing in order to achieve this. Working with a personal trainer will mean that you’ll have a bespoke exercise programme created just for you, and someone on hand to make sure you do it.” “Many people see getting a PT as a great way to make a commitment towards getting fit, and this accountability means that they’re much more likely to stay on track.”
“At the end of the day, opting for a trainer or a bootcamp is all about getting results. I specialise in helping women of all ages lose body fat and more importantly get healthy for life. My youngest client is in her twenties, my oldest in her late 50s. I have clients who have very young babies and on the other end of the scale, clients who are going through or have been through the menopause. I make it my business to ensure that they are all happy with the results they’re getting.”

Kids bored?
Dig out a board game! While many of us will remember playing board games such as Monopoly or Scrabble as children, does the popularity of computer games mean that they will soon be a thing of the past? With children used to playing games on the computer or iPad, the idea of playing board games may seem antiquated, but they still offer many advantages. The fact that many games require at least four players means they’re a great way to get the whole family sitting together, focussed on just having fun. The layout of board games means that it’s a much more sociable experience, with players required to sit facing each other to play the game. And while you might think board games are just a bit of fun, they’re also a great way to sneakily help children develop a variety of skills. They may not realise they’re learning, but by playing a board game children can develop skills such as
number and shape recognition, co-ordination and maths skills. They can also help children develop their reasoning skills as they create their own little strategies to win. Playing these games can also really help children develop socially, as board games help them learn the importance of things such as waiting your turn and communicating with others. Lastly, while children can play computer games at any time, playing a board game lends an air of occasion to family time. Playing one of these games sends a clear signal that you’re happy to put away your mobile phone for a few hours, shut down your laptop and just spend time enjoying your children’s company, so dig out that Snakes and Ladders board tonight!

While there seems to be a plethora of pink and fluffy party ideas for girls, sometimes planning a party for a boy can be a little more difficult. We take a look at some of the ways you can give plan a party with a difference for your little boy. Gross out food: While most of us strive to make the food we serve at parties aesthetically pleasing, don’t be afraid to have a little bit of fun with the food you create for your boy’s party. Setting jelly in straws can create worryingly disturbing ‘worms’ and a little green food colouring can make even the most mundane lemonade take on a monstrous tinge.
Treasure hunt: Little boys love being active, and a treasure hunt will help keep them entertained and work up a healthy appetite for the buffet. You could hide little gifts and clues around the house, or if it’s a summer party and you don’t prize your rockery too much, even bury them in the garden. Have a chef’s party: Depending on how many children are coming to the party it could be fun to let your kids be mini-materchefs for the day. Set up mini workstations in your living room and let them make their own simple culinary creations, such as ‘sweetie’ kebabs or decorating cupcakes. Nominate an adult to be head judge and decide which team made the best party food. It might also be worth having a small supply of pre-cooked party foods on hand should the children’s efforts prove less than Paul Hollywood-worthy. Keep them out the house: If the idea of 20 little boys running around your house fills you with dread, it might be worth considering taking them on a cinema trip instead. They’ll have a great time and nobody will be treading minisausage rolls into your carpet. Just make sure you have enough adults on hand to stop the day descending into a popcorn throwing tournament, and help out with lifts to and from their homes if needs be.

Planning a party for a boy...
Family Go Live caught up with Jools Oliver to hear all about her new clothing range for Mothercare So Jools, what was your inspiration behind your new range? “The main inspiration for the first collection was a piece Mum gave me – a night gown with a little fawn embroidered on it. My sister and I wore it as babies, and I dressed my 4 children in it too. “I wanted to create a vintage-inspired collection. Then I went to LA and took in a bit of that retro look as well: sunshine and rainbows, jeans and lumberjack shirts. I like to see children looking like children not mini adults which is why I was inspired by childhood memories and the innocence of childhood.” Did you find it hard to find clothes for your own children – What were your favourite shops and what were the things you looked for? “I always found it easy to dress the girls, I do like Gap, Boden and Zara but I found it more difficult to find great clothes for boys and so have my friends so I’ve really concentrated on this in my own collection and I hope everyone likes what I’ve done.” What is a typical day like in the Oliver household? “It’s quite hectic during term time, like most households, but I love the noise and chaos. “It the weekend, the perfect day would be a day at our house in Essex, a long walk in the woods with the children, back home for a family dinner and then all of us snuggling on the sofa and watching a film together.”
Is it hard to fit in work around childcare and other commitments? “It can be hard, especially during the school holidays, so Mothercare has been really accommodating and we plan all the meetings well in advance. We’ve signed off lots of the collection, sitting on my living room floor! “Buddy and Petal have been on the shoots with me and Poppy and Daisy feature in the ‘behind the scenes’ video of the shoot. Then everyone, Jamie, the children, my sister, my mum and nephews all came along to the store launch which was just lovely.”
