INFANTTS are Infant Feeding & Tongue-Tie Specialists based in Liverpool. With vast midwifery and infant feeding experience, we offer a bespoke service to address infant feeding problems. Family Go Live caught up with Tom Fletcher to find out more about INFANTTS…..

I

OUR STORY INFANTTS first came about following personal experience of my youngest daughter’s tongue-tie. Bella was diagnosed with tongue-tie as she had slow weight gain, due to a poor latch, and reflux. After 6 stressful weeks Bella had a tongue-tie division. The change in her feeding was instant. Her latch improved and she soon started to put on weight. As a dad of three and knowing the stress and anxiety of having a baby with feeding problems, I wanted an infant feeding and tongue-tie specialist service to be readily available and accessible to those who need it! INFANTTS lead specialist, Sarah Mckie, is an experienced midwife who has gained a wealth of skills, knowledge and clinical practice in all areas of midwifery. She has been a specialist in infant feeding for over 17 years and 10 years as a lactation consultant (International Board Certified Lactation Consultants -

IBCLC). Sarah has been practising as a tongue-tie practitioner for the NHS since 2010 and is a full member of the Association of Tongue-Tie Practitioners UK. Laura and Natalie, our Breastfeeding Peer Supporters, bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to provide feeding advice and guidance for our mums (and dads) to feed their baby. Helen (Bella’s mum) deals with all queries and bookings, providing guidance and advice both pre and post appointment. WHAT IS TONGUE-TIE? Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is where the strip of skin connecting the baby’s tongue to the floor of their mouth is shorter than usual, affecting around 4-11% of newborn babies (www.nhs. uk). Some babies who have tonguetie don’t seem to be bothered by it. In others, it can restrict the tongue’s movement and baby’s ability to open their mouths wide enough to latch, making it harder to feed. Some other problems associated with tongue-tie are restless and unsettled feeds, poor weight gain, difficulty controlling milk flow, clicking noise when feeding, sore and damaged nipples and engorgement/mastitis. If your baby’s feeding is affected, treatment involves a simple procedure called tongue-tie division (frenulotomy), which comprises cutting the short, tight piece of skin connecting the underside of the

tongue to the floor of the mouth. It is a simple and almost painless procedure that usually resolves feeding problems straight away. The use of tongue-tie division is supported by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) as it is considered a safe and simple intervention, which demonstrates significant improvements in feeding, particularly breastfeeding. WHAT DO WE OFFER? At INFANTTS we are passionate about providing you with a quick and accessible solution to address your baby’s feeding problems. Our consultation includes a full assessment of your baby’s tongue function and appearance, a tongue-tie division if required followed by feeding advice and support. NEXT STEPS…. If you are worried about your baby’s feeding and to see if your child will benefit from a tongue-tie division, take our online assessment - www.infantts.com/assessment. For further information regarding tongueties, local breastfeeding support groups, and more about us and what we do, please see - www.infantts.com To book an appointment please call Helen on 07939 201760 or visit www.infantts.com 4

MEET THE HEAD Jason Roberts Head teacher at Gateacre School

his Issue we speak to Jason Roberts Head teacher at Gateacre School in Gateacre Liverpool

T

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE ETHOS OF THE SCHOOL? WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL? All pupils can achieve their personal best and we expect everyone who is part of our community to be polite, honest and hard working in order to be successful in school and in life. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN HEAD OF GATEACRE? 23 months. I joined Gateacre as their Headteacher in September 2016. HOW DO YOU ENSURE THE STUDENTS ACHIEVE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL? Firstly, by making sure everyone is ready to learn, arriving fully equipped for the day ahead. Secondly by making sure that teachers have opportunities to develop and cocreate fantastic lessons.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? Teaching! But when I’m not teaching or covering lessons I enjoy working with my staff and pupils, finding out what is going well and what we could do to make things even better. WHAT SORT OF FEEDBACK DO YOU RECEIVE FROM PARENTS? The past 18 months has been incredibly positive and supportive with regards to all the things we are doing to make the school even better. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE GATEACRE TO A FRIEND? A friendly, highly aspirational community school committed to providing all pupils with a quality academic and nurturing education. WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU FIND THE STUDENTS AT GATEACRE LEAVE WITH? Compassion, integrity and a desire to be the best they can be. WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT SCHOOL? English and biology. I read George Orwell’s Animal Farm for my GCSE and was hooked by the imagery within the book, this led me onto

exploring Russian history and finding out more about political history in general. I also read more books by Orwell, 1984 being a particular favourite. WHAT DID YOU DISLIKE ABOUT SCHOOL? I can honestly say I didn’t dislike anything, like everyone I had days where it was tough and times when I felt like I was sinking but I had some great mates that I’m still in touch with now nearly 23 years later and they helped me through those times when things got difficult.

Jason was awarded the Echo Head Teacher of the Year Award 2018

EDUCATION

NEWS

Key Stage 2 SATs results 2018: 64% achieve ‘expected standard’ An impressive 64% of pupils achieved the government’s “expected standard” in reading, writing and maths in this year’s key stage 2 SATs, up from 61% last year, according to interim results published by the government. The results show that the proportion of pupils reaching a scaled score of 100 or more rose in every discipline. In reading, 75% achieved the standard, compared with 71% last year, while 76% met the standard in maths, up from 75%. In spelling, punctuation and grammar tests, 78% of pupils met the expected standard, up from 77%, and the proportion meeting the standard in writing was 78%, up from 76%. Nick Gibb, Minister of State for Schools, praised both teachers and the government’s reforms for the results. “A good primary education lays the foundations for success at secondary school and beyond,” he said. “That’s why we introduced a more rigorous, knowledge-rich primary school curriculum – with an emphasis on reading and fluency in arithmetic – to ensure every child is helped to reach their potential from the moment they start school. “Today’s results and the rising standards we are seeing in our primary schools are the fruit of our reforms and a tribute to the hard work and dedication of teachers across the country.”

An impressive football season for the girls of Malvern An impressive football season for the girls of Malvern this year as they have gone from strength to strength to become the unrivalled national champions! Their journey started with mixed Year 5 & 6 girls winning an EFC Merseyside competition where they beat 26 other primary schools to become representatives in EFC in the Premier League tournaments. The girls were given the opportunity to play at the King Power stadium against 19 other elite Premier League teams across England & Wales. A total of 1700 primary schools entered the initial preliminary knock out rounds at the King Power Stadium and the Malvern girls conceded only one goal. An impressive run by anyone’s standards! Not only did they take home the title as champions but their captain (Zara Shaw) also won the golden boot for top goal scorer across the competition.

LA PETITE ÉCOLE DE LIVERPOOL

A new not-for-profit French extra-curricular school Which welcomes children in and around Liverpool, who have French /French-speaking parents. For bilingual (or aspiringbilingual) children these classes are ideal! Our qualified teachers follow an adapted curriculum to promote this bilingualism. It gives children: the ability to communicate with their French-speaking friends/relatives; the sense of belonging to a francophone community; later job opportunities in French-speaking countries. Children learn to read, write and converse. They also acquire knowledge of different francophone cultures. We run cultural events 2 to 3 times a year. This year we had a Francophone-themed Christmas party and one on ‘musique française’ in May. Visit our website to give your opinion on when to have the French classes. www.lapetiteecoledeliverpool.com.

MAMMAMIA

Mammamia is an Italian language school created by three native speaker mums who wanted to provide their own children with a place and an opportunity to practice their second language and grow up as full bilinguals. We organise readings, book exchanges, film afternoons and several workshops, Children can improve their language skills and learn about the Italian culture and traditions. And for your older ones we offer Italian exam preparation courses, too… MAMMAMIA! To find out more, email us at mammamia.liverpool@gmail.com Vi aspettiamo! Code switching Kids - is your child Bilingual? BY EMANUELA MANCUSO & DR DAVID GIOFRÈ ilingualism can be defined as the capacity to speak and understand two or more languages. Most bilingual children are contemporaneously exposed to two or more languages very early on in childhood. In addition, most of the bilingual children in the UK, are from families where parents speak different languages (e.g., Welsh and English) or in a family that uses a different language from that of the community around them (e.g., Italian). Notably, the majority of the world’s population is multilingual with two third of children brought up in bilingual environments. In the UK, however, only about the 39% is actually bilingual (Multilingual Britain, 2012).

B

This is particularly unfortunate if we consider that in a globalized world, forming a multilingual population is important for a variety of reasons, e.g., for a global citizenship, for diplomacy, security and international relations. In addition, from an individual perspective, bilingualism has been linked to important benefits. The concept of bilingualism and its effects has changed considerably over the last few years. Early research supported the idea that bilingualism had detrimental effects on children’s development (e.g., mental confusion or difficulties in the acquisition of the first language). Based on these findings, parents and teachers were

familygolive.com

usually advised to use only one language at home. More recently, researchers have broken grounds in terms of the benefits to raising bilingual children (Colin, 1996). Speaking two or more languages on a daily basis is an exercise that produces a variety of cognitive advantages in childhood, in adulthood, and in old age. Recent evidence demonstrates that the effects of bilingualism appear to take place almost from birth, with infants only a few months old being able to distinguish one language from another (Byers-Heinlein et al., 2010). Children who know more than one language have a spontaneous understanding of language structure and therefore an enhanced ability to learn new languages. Research has shown that bilingualism gives children advantages beyond languages such as in cognitive flexibility and attention control (Sorace, 2011). A particularly and unique phenomenon of bilingualism is “code switching”. Code switching is the tendency of bilinguals when speaking to other bilinguals to switch from one

language to another. This process is highly variable between individuals, but bilingual speakers tend to develop a powerful mechanism for keeping the two languages separate, so that fluency in one language can be achieved without intrusions from the language not in use. Therefore, the bilingual child’s constant experience of having two languages available enhances executive control in other domains. Based on all the evidence presented thus far, we can conclude that yes, bilingualism presents with a series of advantages and it is never too early or too late for child to start learning a second language. Bilingual children hit the same linguistic milestones at about the same time as monolingual children. Some children begin talking early and some begin talking much later for a wide variety of reason, but learning two languages generally will not delay that milestone (King & Mackey, 2007).

INCLUSIVE YOUTH AND PLAY SERVICES FOR DEAF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE... any of us have had the pleasure of watching our children perform at the school sign language assembly but did you know that behind The Hands Project, lies Deaf Active? A charity that has campaigned tirelessly to promote inclusive youth and play services for deaf children and young people, Children Of Deaf Adults, Hard of Hearing children and their hearing family members and friends.

M

Deaf Active is a community resource that is regrettably missed on the radar of many families. They offer a wide

familygolive.com

variety of free activities including an after-school club and school holiday play schemes for children in years 1-11 . Yes, you read that correctly… it’s all free! From Youth Club, Football, and Glow in the dark Zumba, kids are guaranteed to have fun, make friends and learn to communicate through both speech and sign. It sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? But Deaf Active is funded by the Big Lottery whilst also running Active Fitness which, for the moderate fee of just £1 per day, offers fitness classes throughout the day, starting right after school drop-off and ending in the evenings. They also offer personal training at a cost of £5 as well as Kick Jutsu for children at a cost of £3 per session. As a parent, I cannot tell you how wonderful it is having the option to get fit (and avoid chores) while the kids are at school for such a reasonable fee without any contracts or obligations. And it’s even better if you manage to

go with a group of parents directly after the school run as you’ll be peer pressured into keeping with the routine! Personally, I love the fact that keeping fit with Deaf Active is both good for the body and good for the heart. For more information visit www.deafactive.org

The importance of Music in Education. BY CANDICE MULLIGAN HEAD OF MUSIC AT CARDINAL HEENAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

usic is undoubtedly an integral part of society. Fostering a child’s love of music and music making allows them to learn about different cultures, develop a creative mind and express themselves.

M

Music education can take many forms; one to one instrumental teaching and classroom based composing, performing and learning about the theory of music. All of these are important and develop a variety of skills. The technical ability to play an instrument improves dexterity, stretches and challenges the brain and can lead to children excelling in other areas of education alongside music making. When asking my pupils in school why they chose to learn an instrument I got a variety of answers from ‘I want to become the next Ed Sheeran’ to ‘I want to be as clever as Mozart’ to ‘it seems fun’. Regardless of the reason, they are opening up so many skill sets that will help them in the future. Performance is a key element of music teaching - from short informal classroom performances to standing on stage performing to thousands of people. Performing increases confidence, allows pupils to work on interaction skills and creates resilience. On top of this it also allows children to showcase their talent and gives a sense of achievement. In particular, singing as part of a group is a well-known stress release, promotes wellbeing and is a fun way to make music.

Being able to critically listen to music not only allows children to understand it better but can also lead to a greater appreciation of a wide range of musical genres including that of different cultures. Finally, creating music allows children to express themselves. From making abstract music based on pictures to writing pop songs to composing a symphony; it gives an outlet for creativity. By teaching children in school how to use these skills, we allow them to access their creativity and give them a creative outlet they can use for the rest of their lives. 20

Life’s a beach ndoubtedly one of the most peaceful experiences in life is being on a beach which truly captures your mind, body and soul. Being by the open sea you can literally feel a sense of calm and relaxation. A place where memories are made which last a lifetime. We have picked four incredibly enchanting beaches for you to consider visiting which are right on your doorstep (or a short flight away!) Pack up the kids, your beach towels and your thoughts and let them all roll out on one of these four breathtakingly beautiful beaches.

U

1. ABERSOCH – WALES The striking Abersoch is home to one of the most popular beaches on the Welsh, Llŷn Peninsula and it’s certainly amongst the liveliest! The main beach is perfect for lounging since it’s in a beautiful, shady location and the sea is an excellent venue for water sports, especially wind-surfing and sailing. It’s popular with families due to the gently shelving sands and an exclusion zone for motorised boats – perfect to form your own mini retreat! In addition to the main beach, Abersoch offer two other beaches, Quarry beach and Town beach. The town beach can get very busy in the peak summer months, but it’s still well worth a visit. And what’s not to love about all that summer sea-side hustle and bustle with kids running out of shops with new buckets and spades perfect for building sandcastles at this stunning sandy escape!

Originally a fishing port, now a popular seaside resort, Abersoch has a large, relatively sheltered sandy beach on the southeast facing side of the Llyn Peninsula. The beach is considered to be “safe” with no severe currents or rips in normal conditions and a motor boat exclusion zone provides a secure area for bathers. The beach is a renowned centre for sailing and watersports. Beach huts can be rented by the day or week; enquire at the beach cafes. 2. BALLYMASTOCKER BEACH, CO. DONEGAL, IRELAND Ballymastocker Bay is a spectacular Blue Flag beach located on the Fanad Peninsula in county Donegal. It was once voted the 2nd most beautiful in the World by readers of the Observer Magazine (pipped to the post by some average looking tropical paradise on the Seychelles with lovely palm trees!) It is located on the western side of Lough Swilly between Rathmullan and Fanad Head and has fabulous views towards the Inishowen Peninsula. The best views can be seen from the viewpoint on the Knockalla coast drive on the way from Rathmullan to Portsalon.

Visit the nearby town of Portsalon and experience all that Irish hospitality has to offer. This is an area where the locals will always take the time to say ‘hello’ and advise you on where best to go for your traditional pint of Guinness in one of the many local pubs. The children would be sure to make new friends in this friendly corner of the world on the Irish Coast. It is certainly one of the most

This stunning sandy paradise is one that looks almost too good to be true, good enough for a postcard as to those who haven’t been they’d certainly, ‘wish they were here’. 4. BAMBURGH, NORTHUMBERLAND Majestic Bamburgh Castle, once a Norman stronghold towers over the wide expanse of pristine, sandy beach, backed by sand dunes. Bamburgh Castle beach is a perfect place to go for long, wind-swept walks at any time of year. The water temperatures don’t really get particularly warm even in the height of summer, but in the milder months of the year children enjoy playing in the waves and the sand is good for building somewhat impressive sandcastles and playing traditional beach games.

beautiful beaches in Ireland and it’s easy to see why. On a sunny day (few and far between in Ireland but they can occur!) you could easily be in a tropical paradise. With the Irish salty sea wind in your hair and the sun in your eyes. Entirely captivating and a stunning beach to behold. 3. ACHMELVICH, SCOTLAND A popular spot with water skiers, windsurfers and kayakers, Achmelvich is a breathtakingly bustling beach during the summer months. Dogs are not permitted so you can rest assured of the children’s safety and feel completely at ease and at one with nature whilst you let your troubles disappear gazing into the impressive shorefront. The unique morphology of the area, means there are many nearby walks and climbs, including the famous Suilven, for those interested in hiking. The beach is popular with fishers with cod, haddock, whiting, pollack, saithe and mackerel being common catches. Perfect for any avid fishermen or fisherchildren!

familygolive.com

Opposite the beach are the Inner Farne Islands, home of hermits and monks from the 7th century right up until the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century. So yes, an educational visit as well! With some interesting rock pools in this area of the beach and a small lighthouse - the most northerly of its kind in mainland England. Another interesting fact is the world’s first ever lifeboat was developed and tested at Bamburgh beach. (Yes, it’s an interesting fact, tried and tested!) The beach at Bamburgh gets waves good enough for surfing and is regarded as one of the most consistent spots on the coast. Surf hire and lessons are available. Behind the beach the dunes of Sandy Hills are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including some quite rare insects. This area has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest, perfect for all your budding scientists!

JOHN LENNON AND YOKO ONO’S STORY IN THEIR OWN WORDS.

IMAGINE PEACE 01 © Mark McNulty

n a world first, the Museum of Liverpool is hosting a ground-breaking exhibition telling John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s story in their own words. The exhibition explores the personal and creative chemistry of this iconic couple and their ongoing Imagine Peace campaign.

I

Double Fantasy - John & Yoko is a free exhibition, celebrating the meeting of two of the world’s most creative artists who expressed their deep and powerful love for one another through their art, music and film. They used their fame and influence to campaign for peace and human rights across the world, transforming not only their own lives, but art, music and activism forever. Featuring personal objects alongside art, music and film produced by both John and Yoko, the exhibition is drawn from Yoko’s own private collection, some of which has never been displayed.

“I am so happy and grateful that we are having our Double Fantasy - John & Yoko show in Liverpool. This is where John was born, and I know John would be very happy too. We were a very simple couple just loving each other every day and I just wanted to show the simple truth of us. In our personal life we were pretty simple people, and we made all sorts of things with love for each other. Everything was made out of love. We found that we were both very strongly interested in world peace. I feel John and I are still working together. I always feel his warmth next to me.” - Yoko Ono Lennon

Taking a chronological journey, the exhibition starts with two unique individuals - a leading figure in the avant-garde art world and a global rock ‘n’ roll star. From a tender first meeting at Indica Gallery in London, it was 18 months later that the album ‘Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins’ was issued. What followed was breathtaking in its

rapidity and productivity until John’s tragic and untimely death on 8 December 1980. Through interviews, quotes and lyrics, the story of their personal and creative relationship along with their political activism and peace campaigning, is told in their own words for the very first time. From the intimate to the iconic, the exhibition brings together unmissable objects and artworks. A rolling programme of the films that John and Yoko created, and music videos made under Yoko’s supervision are being shown. A music room, overlooking the Mersey with the couple’s albums played for visitors, features album cover art. Double Fantasy - John & Yoko is a major part of Liverpool’s celebration of its 10th anniversary as European Capital of Culture. Free entry Until 22 April 2019. This exhibition has been made possible with the kind permission of Yoko Ono Lennon.

There are some things that can’t be ‘lifestyled’ away! Whilst dieting can help you lose fat, weight training can enhance your physique, and a strategic wardrobe can help you hide lumps, these methods can’t do anything to remove excess skin or lift sagging parts. Cosmetic surgery can make changes that aren’t otherwise possible. Here’s our Go to Guide on what a few of these procedures entail:

FITNESS FICTION FIND OUT THE FACTS ...

f you’re new to dieting and training, you might unknowingly get stuck reading fitness fiction. Bad advice can make hitting your goals next to impossible! Don’t fall for the diet myths, fads or easy outs. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

I

Health and fitness shouldn’t be just a week-long fad. It should be a life-long pursuit. Each new gain should bring about a slew of new goals: If you lose 20 pounds, sign up for a 5K; if you reach a new squat PR, see what you can do about your deadlift. There’s no end to how far you can take your fitness. The problem for most is just getting started. As a beginner, you may fall prey to the inconsistencies and falsehoods spread by the uneducated and the untrained. (As if getting off the couch isn’t hard enough!) Check out a few of the diet myths and truths below and become more aware of what will work best for your goals!

MYTH 1: I CAN SPOT-REDUCE MY PROBLEM AREAS TRUTH: Spot-reduction is not possible unless you go for liposuction. Without such surgery, your body will draw fat from different regions at different rates depending on your genetic makeup MYTH 2: THE MORE YOU SWEAT, THE MORE FAT YOU LOSE TRUTH: Sweat has nothing to do with intensity; it’s your body’s way of getting rid of heat – Sorry to burst the sweaty bubble! MYTH 3: LIFTING WEIGHTS MAKES WOMEN BULKY TRUTH: Considering females have 1/20th to 1/30th of the testosterone levels that men have, this is a false belief. By lifting more weight, females don’t have the testosterone to support serious muscle mass growth. Now, eating 10,000 calories a day and performing intense strength training workouts will bulk a female up, but not many can eat this on a daily basis! (Ok maybe some of us give this a good attempt on holiday!). People also commonly think the average female doesn’t need to lift

heavy weight, but then you see them trying to haul 50-pound bags of groceries in one hand and a full-sized child in the other. Lifting will benefit women in many areas of their lives. MYTH 4: CLEANSE PRODUCTS WILL ENHANCE YOUR RESULTS TRUTH: Medically, there’s no reason to do a cleanse. Your body has natural ways of detoxifying. If you eat a healthy diet that includes a lot of vegetables. A cleanse is a waste of money. And let’s be honest, actual food is the best! MYTH 5: THE ONLY WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT IS BY CUTTING OUT CARBS TRUTH:The only way to lose the right amount of weight is by adopting a diet than supports your goal, training with weights, and doing some cardio. Your program should include all of these aspects long enough to see a difference. Diet, weights, and cardio—the holy trinity of fitness! Carbs are not the enemy!
