BI-MONTHLY | ISSUE 60 | JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2018 | WWW.FAMILYGOLIVE.COM s another year begins, as always we are left reflecting on our year gone and all those memories that have compiled another chapter in our own books. The holidays, the triumphs,
A
that work promotion, the milestones that have been conquered, the tears, the tantrums (that’s just us by the way not our kids!) and we look forward bright eyed and bushy tailed to all the wonderful possibilities this year may have in store for us. The thing is, every year we start off with many unattainable resolutions and after a few months have passed and we haven’t donated as much to charity as we would have liked, or refrained from one too many party nights or dropped three dress sizes we start to feel the new year resolution guilt! Well this year we look at realistic resolutions and how not to put too much pressure on ourselves. As parents we tend to put enormous pressure on ourselves already, this year why not take a breather and look after you for a change! We take a look at working mothers and if there is ever a way to be a great success in your career as well as a great success at home, or will one always suffer? It feels as though it has been winter for approximately nine months now! So if you’re in need of some sun and heat and want to relax over mid-term, we have the perfect island retreats for you. Let’s discover the Canary Islands and dream about sandy toes, salty sea hair and well behaved children! (Well, we can dream can’t we?!). Have you recently found out that you will soon be extending your family by one? Congratulations if so! But have you been a little fearful about introducing your child to a new sibling? We have some useful tips on how to make the transition go as smoothly as possible!

INTRODUCING A TODDLER TO NEW BABY
aving another baby can be both an exciting and unsettling time for the whole family – including your older child. So, anything you can do to make that first meeting with his little brother or sister go smoothly is always helpful. The secret? Making it as low key as you can for your other child, even though you will be jumping for joy yourself! (Powered by coffee of course).
H
Here are our top tips for introducing your child to their new baby brother or sister: DO THE PREP.
Make sure you have involved your older child in parts of your pregnancy, such as letting him listen to the baby’s heartbeat, perhaps letting them suggest baby names, pick out new-born toys etc. This will give them a good starting idea to what is going to happen. TRY TO KEEP UP YOUR TODDLER’S ROUTINES AND ACTIVITIES.
Going to playgroup, visiting friends
and telling a bedtime story might be difficult to organise in the first few weeks. But sticking to established routines will help reassure your toddler. ACCEPT THAT YOUR OLDER CHILD MIGHT NOT LOVE THEIR NEW BROTHER OR SISTER AT FIRST.
baby. Find something for them to do before you start feeding, or use the feed as an opportunity to tell them a story or have a chat. BE PATIENT WITH BABYISH BEHAVIOUR.
They may not feel the way you do. It’s lovely if they share your pleasure, but don’t expect it, it will come in time….hopefully!
Your older child may ask for a bottle, want to be carried or, even if they are potty trained, start wetting themselves again. This is completely normal behaviour, so try not to let it bother you and don’t punish them.
BE PREPARED TO COPE WITH EXTRA DEMANDS.
EXPECT SOME JEALOUSY AND RESENTMENT.
Your toddler may need more attention. Friends or relatives may be able to help out, but your child will still need one-to-one time with you, so that they don’t feel as if they’ve been forgotten.
It’s almost certain to happen at some point. Ask for help from your partner, friends or relatives, so that you can have time alone with each child. This will help you balance the demands put on you.
ENCOURAGE YOUR OLDER CHILD TO TAKE AN INTEREST.
ENCOURAGE YOUR TODDLER TO HELP WITH THE BABY.
Children don’t always love babies, but they do find them interesting. You can encourage this by talking to them about what they were like as a baby. Get out their old toys and show them their baby photos…so cute! DISTRACT YOUR TODDLER DURING FEEDS.
Your toddler may feel left out and jealous when you’re feeding the
Turn looking after the baby into a fun game. Perhaps ask your toddler to help with a nappy change, and encourage your child to talk to the baby. Every little helps! Soon, your new family dynamic will fall into place and you’ll wonder what you ever worried about! Good luck!

With progressive training, babies can be taught vital life saving skills such as turning onto their backs or, following a sudden submersion, swimming to the nearest solid object. ‘And it’s so important that they do,’ explains Ali owner of Water Babies Liverpool ‘Over the years, more than a dozen Water Babies have saved themselves from drowning – most of whom were only two years old at the time.’ The first year of a baby’s life is crucial in terms of

development, and swimming with your baby can have an extremely positive effect on this development - all the gentle rocking, reaching for objects, kicking movements and learning to respond to voice commands all provide the perfect stimulation for your baby’s brain. And water allows for a baby’s muscles to move freely without the constraints of gravity, making being in water the perfect exercise for tots.
With a clear emphasis on having fun, the lessons are very sociable occasions, excellent for strengthening the bond between the two of you. As the weeks go by, you’ll love seeing your child progress with the help of our professional instructors.

‘Do It All’ Generation Of Working Mothers he pressure to juggle careers, children and, often, caring for elderly parents is driving soaring levels of workplace stress among middle aged professional women. Sadly, there is a common uncomfortable thread that ties at least most mums together. They feel torn, they think they’re getting motherhood wrong somehow and feel like they’re doing a disservice to their career, their children, their partners or all of them.
T
We all endeavour to be good parents. The bottom line is, we want the very best for our children. But what exactly the litmus test for that is and how we strike a balance between all the conflicting demands in our life is quite the conundrum. When we are at work we find ourselves pining for home; fretting over whether the children remembered to give in their homework or their sandwiches are in the right lunchboxes. Then when at home our mind wanders to the story we pitched last week or the feature that needs finishing. We are often told that this is modern motherhood; that women of today are under greater pressure than ever to contribute financially whilst ensuring their children are not only fed and watered but socially fulfilled and thriving academically and personally. As we find ourselves staring in the face of the endless to-do list all it does is make us feel inadequate. Not to mention that the Jones’ next door seem to have it all figured out with their impeccably well-presented children, seemingly well-established career and that care-free laugh with their partner about how amazing they all are! We seem to be flying out the door, wearing last week’s pencil skirt which you promised you’d wash this week! Franticly throwing coats on top of half-dressed children still eating toast and passing your partner with more of a grunt of ‘you’re doing the pick up!’ and flying off to work for shelter from the storm. Until the work storm hits of course.
If we don’t do extra maths with our children, enrol them in three varied after-school activities and recite Shakespeare with them at least once a week, it will be our fault entirely if they don’t make it to Oxbridge. If we don’t go for the promotion at work or offer to stay late three nights next week to support a special project, we may as well kiss our career goodbye. If we don’t find time for date nights and cook our other half wholesome meals that we can devour together over a candlelit dinner whilst we share the stories of our day, will our marriage even survive? Maybe it is a bitter pill to swallow accepting that mothers cannot have it all, but maybe it’s also our saving grace. Trying to be everything to everybody is a recipe for disaster which will leave everyone vying for a piece of us and feeling decidedly short-changed. So, mothers everywhere, I urge you to take stock, quit setting yourself up for a fall, prioritise and enjoy the ride. Life is too short, so be kinder to yourself, we are all just winging it! 8

INVE$TING HAVE YOU
ave you recently thought about investing in a tutor? There are numerous benefits to having someone on hand for your child outside of school hours. The purpose of tutoring is to help students become independent learners, providing them with the skills needed to succeed in school. However, tutoring is not just for doing better with school work, we look at other benefits including improved work and study habits, increased confidence and attitude, or improved social and behavioural skills. Not to mention tutored students generally perform better on tests, and attend school more regularly. Win win!
H
Although tutoring is usually better suited for those who are struggling in school, it does not mean you are a bad student or that is nescessarily for those who face slightly more challenges in a school environment. There is nothing wrong with needing to work with a tutor. Some students need more help jumping those educational hurdles, some just need that boost of self-esteem and confidence - almost anyone can benefit from this effective way of learning. One of the biggest advantages of private tuition is that lessons can easily be customised to suit each student. Whereas in school a student may be at a disadvantage, if, for example they work at a different pace to the rest of the class, or need to focus more attention on a specific aspect of the course,
familygolive.com

IN A TUTOR?
private tuition does not come with these problems. Learners will benefit from the fact that a tutor can adjust the pace, focus and change goals of a lesson depending on the needs and abilities of the student, meaning that learning efficiency will be maximised. This is an especially important point to note for any students that have learning disorders, such as dyslexia. A good tutor will be able to take this into account and be a great benefit to a student. Another huge positive gained from private tuition is the amount of time a student will receive from a teacher. As private tuition is usually on a oneto-one basis, teachers can focus their attention 100% on a student. This is obviously a huge advantage compared with classes of twenty to thirty pupils where a teacher’s time is divided and individuals can very easily become lost in the crowd, especially if they are shy and lacking in confidence to speak out or ask questions. With less distractions, the tutor is better able to appreciate and work on a student’s weak points, making the whole learning process more effective. As private tuition is usually one-to-one, tutors and students are able to work much more closely and develop stronger relationships than would otherwise be possible in a larger class. The impact that this can have on a student is profound, as teachers will be able to get to know their students better, and so will find it easier to spot potential problems and give them assistance. The tutor becomes a confidant for the student and they see their time together
as rewarding, positive and leave feeling listened to and appreciated. For shy students, being in a learning environment with less people can also help them to express themselves, as they are under less pressure from their peers. School lessons can often be quite rigid in their learning style, as they may have very set goals and a strong reliance on text books. Private classes usually have a less formal approach though, and so are more flexible as a result. This leaves tutors free to use whichever materials and learning styles which they deem most useful. Thus, a student will often be faced with materials that they would not encounter in school. These adaptations can be a great help, as they prevent students from becoming bored whilst at the same time pushing their boundaries and providing them with a challenge. Although it is great if parents are able to get actively involved with their children’s learning, this is not always a practical option. Busy schedules, work, other children, can limit the time you are able to spend each week helping out with homework. In addition, as children become older and their studies become more advanced, parents may not always be able to provide suitable assistance. In both these cases, having a private tutor who has both the time and skills necessary can be a great help, benefitting both students and parents alike. 11

OUR TOP THREE PLACES TO EAT WITH THE KIDS
Our picks
HICKORYS SMOKEHOUSE This wonderful eatery features in West Kirby, Chester and soon to be Southport (the 22nd of January to be exact!) ‘Why Hickory’s?’, we hear you ask! Well, not only is this the ‘it’ place to be for families at the moment, the food is out of this world too. Fanatical about flames; silly about smokers and utterly obsessed with the smells, tastes and traditions of the Deep South. They are a small but perfectly formed group of authentic barbecue style restaurants who live and breathe the values of southern USA hospitality.
VIVA BRAZIL – LIVERPOOL Offering a unique Brazilian dining experience like no other with an unlimited supply of 16 Brazilian BBQ meats served to your table straight from their charcoal BBQ! What we love about Viva Brazil, (apart from the endless supply of meat!) is the fact that on Friday and Saturday evenings, there is entertainment in the restaurant for the kids to enjoy. And not that terrible resort-style entertainment that we have come to know, but really cool acts such as Lee WellZy the Magician (Think Dynamo!) This means the kids are entertained and mum and dad can relax into their dining experience.
DOWN THE HATCH – LIVERPOOL OK, so this place is just super cool. It has a unique spin on vegan/ vegetarian food and makes eating veggies fun! Seriously, you need to check out their gallery online for proof! From dishes like, ‘Sketti and Beet Balls’ to ‘Hakuna Frittata’ this is definitely one to add to your list especially as KIDS EAT FREE during February half term! This is a genius idea and one which the kids will LOVE. P.S. They also have a voucher at the back of the mag – enjoy!

New Year, New You ...
nother year has begun and as always, we enter it with many high hopes for the future and the forthcoming months. We begin to pile on our expectations of ourselves as soon as the clock strikes midnight on the 1st of January. ‘I will lose 10 pounds in the next two weeks’ or ‘I will be a better wife/husband and cook my other half a lobster dinner every other evening’ maybe something a long the lines of, ‘my kid’s will learn to play at least two musical instruments together so as we can form a family band and travel the North.’ OK – maybe a bit far fetched but you get the idea!
A
Every year, we almost set ourselves up for failure. The resolutions we bestow on to ourselves for the most part will be unattainable with the timeline we have given. We never seem to set realistic goals which is why we are left feeling like we didn’t accomplish much as we reflect on a year that has passed. Then again some of the goals we set ourselves are very doable and perhaps we need a little push sometimes with a seemingly more difficult resolution to keep. Here are our top tips for making and sticking to your new goals this year:
familygolive.com
AGAIN!
START SMALL Make resolutions that you think you can keep. If, for example, your aim is to exercise more frequently, schedule three or four days a week at the gym instead of seven. If you would like to eat healthier, try replacing dessert with something else you enjoy, like fruit or yoghurt, instead of seeing your diet as a form of punishment. Change one behaviour at a time Unhealthy behaviours develop over the course of time. Thus, replacing unhealthy behaviours with healthy ones requires time. Don’t get overwhelmed and think that you have to reassess everything in your life. Instead, work toward changing one thing at a time. TALK ABOUT IT Share your experiences with family and friends. Consider joining a support group to reach your goals, such as a workout class at your gym or a group of co-workers quitting smoking. Having someone to share your struggles and successes with makes your journey to a healthier lifestyle that much easier and less intimidating.
DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP Perfection is unattainable. Remember that minor missteps when reaching your goals are completely normal and OK. Don’t give up completely because you ate two chocolate bars and broke your diet, or skipped the gym for a week because you were busy. Everyone has ups and downs; resolve to recover from your mistakes and get back on track. ASK FOR SUPPORT Accepting help from those who care about you strengthens your resilience and ability to manage stress caused by your resolution. If you feel overwhelmed or unable to meet your goals on your own, consider seeking professional help. Psychologists are uniquely trained to understand the connection between the mind and body. They can offer strategies as to how to adjust your goals so that they are attainable, as well as help you change unhealthy behaviours and address emotional issues Or in the end you could just make one very simple New Years Resolution this year: Not to make any more New Years Resolutions!

We’ve Gone Canary… ith Winter still lingering on, now may be as good a time as any to start planning your great escape… OK maybe just a great getaway! We take a look at a few of the desirable islands which make up the Canaries. Deserts, dense woods and breathtaking mountains sit side-by-side on these spectacular Canary Islands. Year-round sun makes the quartet of Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura sing the same tune. Each one’s a firm favourite for unique reasons – think wine tasting, activities, sprawling out on sand, and eating culinary masterpieces. These wonderful volcanic islands bubbled out of the ocean off the coast of Africa some 30 million years ago, setting themselves up to receive a flood of 21st-century sun-worshippers. Don’t believe all you hear, the Canary Islands have plenty of surprises in store. Here we focus on the 3 largest – Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria – and show you why their sleepy villages, verdant landscapes and hidden attractions will shatter any lingering stereotypes.
W
1. TENERIFE
1. TENERIFE
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and the only one to have two international airports, which mean that it is no more than between two and four hours flying time from the Spanish mainland and the rest of Europe. (Meaning there are plenty of flights from us to choose from!) Tenerife has the most authentic carnival; it has the highest peak in Spain – the breathtaking Mount Teide (which casts the largest sea shadow in the world! Cool fact to tell the kids!) and the annual average temperature is 22 degrees. That is why, December and August are closer in temperature here than anywhere else. Indulge in the Island’s gastronomy, exotic flavours and culinary tradition. Taste its wines, wrinkly potatoes, mojo sauce and
cheeses. The shopping here too hosts a wide and attractive range of options with a great variety of stores in which you will top-quality products and with prices to suit every pocket. With many visually stunning restaurants, bars, and hotels, you really can’t go wrong in this tropical paradise. Our favourite hotel pick for a romantic holiday is the H10 Big Sur Boutique Hotel, Boasting a beachfront location in the

2. LANZAROTE
3. GRAN CANARIA
You can choose from boutique hotels, apartments and bungalows built in the traditional style, village houses or even luxury yurts! Catering to the whole family and a slightly calmer feel to this island than its sister, Tenerife.
Gran Canaria’s fascinating interior, made up of Natural Protected Spaces, is surrounded by white sandy beaches, quaint little coastal towns and allinclusive family resorts. There’s also a great nightlife scene in Playa Del Ingles and Maspalomas, alongside the island’s historic and cosmopolitan capital, Las Palmas. There are some fantastic package holiday deals and cheap flights available to this dreamlike destination. Gran Canaria is a year-round destination.
This may surprise you, but Lanzarote in the Canary Islands is turning into a rather upmarket destination. Don’t expect anything glitzy or flashy though; this quiet revolution is all about staying in chic, eco-friendly places and spending your days cycling, walking, surfing or sampling the local wines. While there are excellent family hotels in Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise, away from the resorts there is also a wide range of low-key places to stay.
RIA 3. GR AN CA NA
“What sort of beach do we fancy today? A long stretch of golden sand with calm water, or one with perfect waves for surfing? A secret cove at the bottom of a cliff for the kids to play hide and seek?” When you’re on holiday in Lanzarote, this is the sort of conundrum you’ll be discussing – not such a bad one to have! Like all the islands in the Canaries, Lanzarote emerged from the sea as a result of volcanic activity, but only a few of its beaches have black sand. Spend a day driving around the island and let the mesmerising effect of the volcanic landscape soothe your frazzled brain.
2. LAN ZA

And on the subject of beaches, why not choose a hotel on one? The Sol Lanzarote All Inclusive sits on a privileged location on the Matagorda beachfront located in Puerto del Carmen. Enjoy a true legendary vacation with Katmandu Adventures, the newest branded children’s resort club experience. Action-packed days of fully supervised fun and stunning play areas inspired by the myths and legends of Katmandu. Full programme of activities, parties, musicals, evening shows and live music, and an adventure park for the more daring! A holiday the whole family will cherish forever.
They say that on a holiday in Gran Canaria you feel like an astronaut without even leaving the ground, making it a pretty special Canary Island! (And another unique selling point to tell the kids!)
Although the winter might not offer as many hours of sunshine or bathing in the ocean, the temperatures are still higher than in the rest of Europe. Winter also has the most attractive ticket prices, so if you are in it for a bargain, then make sure to book soon! Gran Canaria is a wonderful destination which caters for a range of travellers. It is in a unique position whereby it can accommodate budget seekers, whilst being home to opulent options for luxury travellers. It has beautiful beaches, gorgeous mountains, it is culturally alive and offers a variety of bars and restaurants which serve fresh and delicious food. It is easy to see why Gran Canaria should be on your destination list. Where should you stay? Well our top pick is the Hotel Melia Tamarindos, located in the quiet area of San Agustin with incredible sea views and direct access to the beach. With two beautiful pools, one for adults and one for children also hosting a range of entertainment and live shows and what’s more it is currently on offer! Go check it out and make your Gran Canaria dream come true. www.melia.com/en/hotels/spain/ gran-canaria/melia-tamarindos/

Surviving a Sleepover
There comes a time when you’ll hear the dreaded words – “can I have a sleepover party?” Your initial reaction might be to panic, as this is new ground, but with a little party planning, you can make this an unforgettable experience (for the right reasons and not because you had a nervous breakdown!)
T
Here are some of our top tips to making your sleepover party experience a hit! 1. DO YOUR RESEARCH Once the guest list has been narrowed down from the entire class to a few friends, find out if any of the kids have allergies or dietary
familygolive.com
requirements. Make sure you have an emergency contact number for all the children too, it’s best to ask the parents about allergies instead of the child - You don’t want to end up in A&E as Johnny was eating peanuts because he forgot he was allergic to them! 2. PLAN LOTS OF ACTIVITIES Nobody knows your child better than you, so make the activities something you can work on together. Some fun things to do include craft activities, karaoke, video games, movies, and even a scheduled pillow fight (enter this at your own risk!) or midnight snack. The more you schedule, the less chance there is for things to go off-track. 3. BE READY FOR TEARS! No matter how big and strong the children make themselves out to be,
there will be tears, and you’ll need to help pick up the pieces. There may be a disagreement among party guests, a few teary, homesick kids, or even just someone feeling overwhelmed by it all – perhaps the birthday boy or girl themselves! Be ready to mop up some tears and pat some heads before sending them back into the party. 4. LOOK AFTER YOURSELF Having kids sleep over is very different to having them around after school for a few hours. Have a glass (NOT a bottle!) of wine or a good book on standby to help calm your nerves.
Remember, they’re only young once, and their first sleepover is something they’ll always remember. Make it a memorable day right from the start and god speed!
