Why tweens should be doing Yoga

he transition from late childhood to early teenager can span from 8-12 years. With key developmental stages happening over these years, the happy-golucky child moves into the chaotic whirlwind that is pre-teen. This is a special time in their lives when they become more self-aware and peer-focused. This age range sees more independence as selfidentity becomes more important – kids start taking an interest in the latest trends and become interested in how they look – its an age where they start becoming conscious of others and what they think.

T

Academically, they also start to cognitively develop the ability to form an opinion based on what they know. They can present their own beliefs and morals to their peers and parents. Parents expectations to do well academically can pile a huge pressure on tweens, tutoring for

familygolive.com

entrance exams can expose them to anxiety, and stress caused by SATS, coming from the government also adds another dollop of worry to these developing children. As we are already aware, children and teachers are being increasingly and continually monitored and assessed. This can lay a foundation for children to develop heightened stress and anxiety. Unfortunately this is becoming weaved into our society and home life also might not be conductive to relaxation, space and growth. At this age, children are also going through puberty; hormones surging through them and emotional outbursts are more noticeable – this is a big step in development for a young child – its important that their health and wellbeing is nurtured. AND SO THIS IS WHERE YOGA COMES IN…. Yoga is a way to nurture all aspects of children’s growth, including their physical, emotional, spiritual and mental growth. In a world filled with social pressures, judgment, fear and

separation, there is a strong need for the next generation to feel nourished and supported – so that they can start creating a world that is rooted in ideas and creativity, love and oneness. Our learning experiences and the things we are exposed to as a child has a huge impact on the person we become in later life. Yoga is made up of principles that encourage creativity and balance, giving insight into the beauty and freedom of natural being. Contrasting the conditioned classroom, through yoga, children are invited to explore the full potential of their feelings and thoughts using principles that encourage fun, calm and balance.

FREE TUITION FOR YOUR CHILD

&

AND THE WINNER IS...

...ZACK ast November, Genie Tutors Liverpool and Family Go Live magazine launched their sponsored child place. This was a way of giving a child in the community the chance to have 3 months of tuition with an educational professional for free. After sifting through many applications, a child was selected to be Genie Tutors Liverpool and Family Go Live’s first sponsored child. Our successful applicant was Zack, who is in year 5 at Rudston Primary School. Zack is a social 10-year-old, with many friends and he is often busy with many of his interests. Some of his activities include playing football for Heron Juniors FCs under 10’s team, Spartak Heron, and singing with Rudston Primary School choir, who have recently sang in the Peace Proms at the Echo Arena. Zack is funny, sociable and kind hearted with a great attitude to learning. He really likes school and has a great imagination, but he often finds it a challenge to express his ideas on paper.

L

Zack had his first session with Genie Tutors at the beginning of January. He really enjoyed the format of the session, where he worked in a very small group and started with a game. He especially likes the chance to win prizes through the rewards system and gets on well with the other children in his group. Zack’s mum is already noticing a build in confidence with Zack’s Maths and he finds his tutor trustworthy and helpful. As a parent, Zack’s mum has found that tutors are friendly and the weekly updates they give are also really helpful. She is optimistic that this will allow Zack to reach his targets in school and maybe even excel in his English and Maths in the future.

A great start to tuition for Zack as Genie Tutors Liverpool and Family Go Live magazine’s sponsored child. We will be giving a full report about how Zack found tuition and how it has helped him in school when he finishes his placement. If you or anyone you know would be interested in any future sponsored child places with Genie Tutors, you can email sponsored@genietutors.co.uk and you will be the first to know when the next place is available.

Easter INSPIRATION he Easter holidays have become such a wonderful time of year. Easter is a time representing renewal, growth and transformation; a time when we are able to shake off the old, dark and wintery feelings of the past season and come into a new space of light and possibilities.

T

Easter marks a time of supermarket aisles being loaded with Easter cards, Easter bunnies, Easter eggs, Easter bonnets, flowers and spring daffodils, all from early March. Though this is a time of heavy commercialization, this almost invites us into the preparation of family time at Easter, marking a memorial of fun and frolics with our families and relatives. There is much time to fill while your children are off school. Early mornings can consist of creative Easter themed breakfasts, you can take to the outdoors during the daytime and potentially get crafty and fun in the evenings as the sun sets ready for another day. Why not trying to make bunny ears with your little one? Help them cut bunny ears out of stiff white felt, then stick soft pink felt as the inner ears using glue. Run along the bottom edge of the ears with hot glue and then stick them to an alice-band. Hey presto, you have a bunny! Another fun indoor activity is to invite children to decorate their very own Easter Egg to leave for the Easter bunny. Simply boil up eggs until they are hard, allow them to cool and then let your kids go wild decorating them with dots and stripes or how they wish. Display in an egg cup holder and there you have it, beautiful Easter decorations, home made! Cooking together is a super way to bond with your kids and it doesn’t have to be too frilly or fancy. Easter rice crispy nests and hidden surprise Easter treats are yummy and easy to make. With the nests, it’s as simple as melting white or milk chocolate and mixing with rice crispies or a cereal of your choice. Stir the mix into cake cases, decorate with mini eggs or jelly treats and refrigerate until they taste great! Kids love surprises and so hidden surprise Easter treats and yummy and fun. Simply line a mold with rice crispy mix fill it with mini egg treats and then covering the top half. You can use egg shape molds, heart shape molds, square molds – this is your Kids time to get creative!

ITS GREAT TO GET OUTDOORS… The beauty of spring season is we’re no longer limited to being indoors. The Easter holidays mark the first time of the year where the entire family can get active together. Bicycle riding is a great way to burn off those calorific Easter eggs while also giving you space to take in breaths of healthy, clean fresh air. Take your bicycles and cycle along Otterspool Promenade where the entire family can marvel at the scope of the sky along the River Mersey. Why not cycle through Croxteth Park and visit the local farm there, or cycle through Sefton or Calderstones Park and admire their flourishing spring gardens. Whatever is on the itinerary for you and your family this Easter, be sure to embrace the season. It is this time that the earth rejoices with tapestries of colour as flowers flourish and new shoots begin to grow from the ground. We are no longer in a time of reflection, during spring, we move into a state of transcendence, where manifesting our dreams for the year ahead can really begin to unfold.

hildren see the world rather differently than we do as adults. Things stick in their minds that we wouldn’t necessarily notice. They have little concept of time and the beauty of being a child is that they live completely in the moment.

C

Spring BREAKS

We can buy our children all the toys in the world, but honestly nothing can ever compare to quality time spent together. Investing in their memories will always be worthwhile, as you’re giving them something precious to keep for life. When it comes to planning a family trip, it’s not about how much you spend or how far you travel – its about creating memories, sharing experiences and doing things out of the ordinary, whether that be playing games poolside, splashing about in the sea or taking a walk in a place you’ve never been before; so long as you engage your kids curiosity, you’re on to a winner. Family holidays are definitely valued by children, both in the moment and for long afterwards in their memory. When children travel, we should let them explore their own ways of finding wonder in their surroundings. Let your little ones inspire you too. The great thing about holidaying with kids is their infectious endearment of life. With a sense of wonder and a spirit full of adventure, you and your children are set up to enjoy whatever you do together. We at Family Go Live have been looking forward to British summertime, and have since been exploring the realms of the UK for the perfect family getaway. Influenced very much by what children find fun, here are two of this years travel trends for a British holiday with your loved ones.

EDITOR’S PICK Bump into the Beckhams at Cleverley Mere. Set in 34 acres of gated nature reserve. With its own large river, where otters have been spotted, streams and its own 24 acre lake, this haven surrounded by woodland is breathtaking.

16

GLAMPING….

Glamping seems to be one of the newest trends, merging camping and luxury travel. Some people have experienced camping before - for instance, as a child in a tent or at a camping site, where it’s stripped down and usually even compromises basic needs and comforts. But in the modern day, we are now able to create a five-star hotel experience in a fabric shell that offers extreme, luxurious comfort mixed with exposure to the wilderness. Glamping is absolutely perfect if you’re looking to give your children the gift of the great outdoors, without having to give up your creature comforts. Glamping means fabric walls and no glass windows or wooden doors, which truly unites the senses with natural surroundings in the most immediate and extreme way. The sounds, sights and smells of holidaying in a massive teepee certainly engage you in the rural outdoors, but the glamour and luxury within the teepee means you and your family can still have a cozy nights sleep – set up in your own bed, with a warm fire and all the hot water you need. Children can roam free by day, walking terrains and embark on adventures but still have the knowledge of a safe and comforting bed at the end of the day.

familygolive.com

American fashion designer, Rachel Zoe, star of The Rachel Zoe Project and her husband Rodger Berman spend many weekends glamping with their two children Skyler and Kaius.

LAKESIDE CABINS…

Waterside breaks, complete with outdoor activities are another up coming trend for holidaying in the UK. Whether rooted in the Lake District or down on the Norfolk Broads, cabins and lodges are plentiful, offering warmth, peacefulness and adventure. Purpose build lodges, cabins and tree-house hideaways offer families the chance to be at one with nature. Many are set up on cabin sites, which means there will also be an array of activities to accommodate family time. When taking a time out in the UK, the Beckham’s have returned numerous times to an exclusive resort nestled in the heart of Lancashire. Staying with their family in a swanky riverside tree-house, David and Victoria Beckham have been enchanted by this wonderful nature reserve, not 2 hours away from Liverpool. The celebrity family have enjoyed free activities such as cycling, kayaking, pedalos and even miniature golf at this award winning 5 star gold waterside luxury lodge. Cleverley Mere is set in 34 acres of gated nature reserve. With its own large river, where otters have been spotted, streams and its own 24 acre lake, this haven surrounded by woodland is breathtaking.

L

Stockley Farm’s very own wooden cow. “There will be plenty to keep visitors entertained with such a jam packed programme of activities and interactive workshops to choose from. Indigo Greens There’s been great emphasis this year on people being more health conscious. Limiting processed foods and meat being the first big step towards a healthier body and future. But being a mum, juggling kids along with work and running a household, its fair to say we can appreciate just how precious time is. Sometimes quick and easy preparation at meal times can be a real life-saver. And that’s where Indigo Greens step in.

Indigo Greens are plant-based, whole food specialists who use Organic and Raw ingredients to culminate culinary cuisines that tantalise the tastebuds. With an array of flavoursome dishes that look like psychedelic picnics on the eye. Indigo Greens is every health conscious, busy mum’s dream. The Liverpool loving team of two, who recently won the “Best Healthy Lifestyle Business Award” at Liverpool Lifestyles Awards specialize in organic, plant-based meal prep – and they deliver. That means healthy, vegan, guilt-free take out delivered to your door. The menu is impressive and unique, remixing some traditional classics, Superfood Buddha Bowls, Blind but Awake Scouse, Save the Sheep Pie and fruity Moroccan Tagine with meatless balls to name but a few. I opted for a breakfast of Chia Seed Pudding with passion fruit and blueberry, lunch of Sticky Kung Pho

‘Tings’ with Lemon pilau rice and Vietnamese slaw and Mexican Chilli Bean sweet potato with Sweetcorn salsa and Cashew cheese. One of the first things I noticed where the hearty portions. I could never feel hungry after an Indigo Greens sitting. Popping off each of the lids for a peek, my mouth watered at the colourful vision of tempting textures. I began the day with the delightfully presented Chia Seed Pudding, of which I shared with my 10-monthold son. The breakfast pudding was creamy and rich, with hints of almond flavour and a jelly like consistency. Looking forward to my second sitting, I heated up my lunch as instructed. The Kung Pho sauce was served in a separate pot, which I poured over the piping hot crispy ‘tings’. These ‘tings’ were chunky pieces of organic cauliflower and broccoli covered in crispy sesame seed bread crumbs. The composition of food was pristine. The lightly flavoured lemon pilau, complimented the spicy tang of the Kung Pho Tings, while the freshly seasoned Vietnamese slaw with red cabbage offered a refreshing bite. Later that evening, I heated dinner as I should and bestowed myself and my son with our beautifully presented, sweet potato and Mexican Chilli bean. The potato was so big and wholesome that it was easy to share and honestly, it melted in the mouth; cooked to absolute perfection.

I’ll definitely be ordering from indigo Greens again in the future. Not only did I enjoy their food, I’ve felt inspired by their culinary expertise. As their slogan states – Indigo Greens offer food from a higher consciousness. (Wo)men’s best friend T

The cliché, ‘Man’s best friend’ doesn’t come from nowhere - for many of us, our canine companions are more than just pets; they’re thought of as important members of our family. We don’t just want our dogs to be healthy -- we want them to be happy and to know that we treasure them. What better way to show your affection than to give your pooch some serious pampering?

One of the newest trends for pampering your pooch is to take them along to a doggy crèche. Perfect for those days you’re in work, day care for dogs is an excellent way to maintain your pets wellbeing. With excellent facilities including space to roam free, lots of funky doggy toys and other pooch pals to play with, your dog’s spirit will be well nurtured – he will hardly notice you haven’t been around.

While pampering your dog implies luxury, there are lots of simple ways to take care of your canine companion. Spending quality time with your pooch is imperative and luckily, all you animal lovers can embrace moments together by visiting dog friendly cafes. Across the UK, many themed cafes have opened especially designed for the luxury of man’s best friend. Some owners equate pampering with feeding their dog human food, but too much could have the unintentional effect of making him ill or overweight. At specialist dog shops, you’ll find a wide variety of doggy treats that are designed to keep your dog happy and healthy. 1. Spring means an abundance of floral delight, but these may cause allergies for your pet. Make sure you take extra care by keeping your dog’s paws clean. Check out this easy to use – paw washer.

2. It’s spring and denim is hot! Check out this gorgeous doggy denim and sunglasses combo. 3. There is a wide range of cool toys for your dog, why not keep them entertained with these awesome sensory chew toys. 4. HOUSE OF MEMORIES AT NATIONAL MUSEUMS LIVERPOOL pioneering project created by National Museums Liverpool is making a real difference to people living with dementia, their carers, families and communities. House of Memories is a museum-led dementia awareness programme. Created in 2012, it has provided more than 12,000 carers including health and social care professionals and families, with training, resources, and activities to provide personcentred care to support people to live well with dementia.

A

Museums are experts at looking after people’s memories, and National Museums Liverpool has more than a decade of experience of working with older people. Person-centred care is at the heart of what House of Memories does, acknowledging that an individual’s personal history and memory is of huge importance. House of Memories offers free, informative, practical workshops which enable carers to support people to live well with dementia. Activities include an interactive training session, access to a free object loan service and a free museum memory app. Families and friends can attend a free, four-hour dementia awareness workshop at the Museum of Liverpool who want to find out more about resources and activities, which can help support them and their loved ones. What is Feng Shui? eng shui, an ancient art and science developed thousands of years ago in China, was fashioned to harmonize the energies of individuals and their environment. In literal translation feng means ‘wind’ and shui means ‘water’. In Chinese culture, wind and water are associated with good health, thus good feng shui came to mean ‘good fortune’. When it comes to the home, creating a loving, harmonious and joyful energy that everyone can benefit from is key. This is the goal of feng shui, bringing good to all in the space. The flow of ‘chi, which is positive energy or life force, can be balanced around the home through simple feng shui principles. Here are some feng shui basics that can immediately create a better, more harmonious quality of energy in your living space this Spring.

F

CLEAR YOUR CLUTTER FOR GOOD FENG SHUI Get rid of everything you do not love in your house. Clutter clearing is a time and energy consuming process that will feel like. Hoarding can be common, quite often we put things in cupboards or drawers for fear of letting go. To de-clutter, take everything out the cupboards; be ruthless, if you haven’t used it in a year - get rid. This is an essential step in creating harmonious house feng shui energy. GET GOOD QUALITY AIR AND LIGHT These two elements are essential for a good flow of chi energy in your home. It’s Spring, so don’t forget to

familygolive.com

open windows often and allow as much natural light as possible into each room. There are a number of air purifying plants that will aid in feng shui energy, for example aloe vera, ferns, peace lillys, bamboo palm and ficus. Each of these plants remove toxins that become stagnant in indoor air. You can also use an air purifier and it is good to think about using full spectrum lights. USE FENG SHUI COLOURS Feng shui colors are extremely powerful and can literally transform a room instantly. The atmosphere created using colour, can either build or crumble your vitality and thinking. Each colour vibrates its own frequency, just as you and your home are connected through a multitude of overlapping energy fields, you are connected to the colors in your home in the same way. In feng shui, colours focus on bringing positive energy, clarity and happiness. Use colors that you love and that energize and inspire you. If you are told that green represents abundance but you don’t like green, then don’t use it. Use a color that represents abundance to you. Blues and green represent balance, are calming, natural and healing, while colours like red and orange invoke passion and are stimulating and powerful.

GET THE BASIC OF THE FIVE FENG SHUI ELEMENTS Linking together the basic elements of fire, air, water, earth and ether will bring order and create balance and vibrant energy in all areas of your home. If you need to improve your health, place lush plants representing the wood feng shui element or pieces of wood furniture in the East area of your home. Place a feng shui fountain in the East area of your home to bring chi, keeping the water clean at all times. Placing tumbled stones in your fountain creates a more potent energy. Everybody is unique and, your intention is everything. The beauty of this feng shui process is that the more love you put into your home, the more love you receive back. So don’t delay and start loving your home now, no matter how it looks at the moment. It just needs your help to uncover its healing feng shui potential. 33

... WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THE FIELD OF ADVANCED FACIAL AESTHETICS

he beauty of our faces is that we are each, in ourselves, completely unique. Think to the days when your baby would fixate on your face for minutes at a time, completely in awe, marvelling at your eyes, your mouth, grinning and smiling at each facial expression you make. Think of the magic you have felt during these times when your little one would just smile at you, with open curious eyes.

T

Babies stare at us in such a way because we are interesting. Our faces are interesting. Every contour of expression represents our unique personality. Through our faces we can express how we feel; our face plays a major role to our identity and for that very reason, its important to celebrate our uniqueness. It has to be said, as time moves forward, the natural progression of life means that our bodies and faces will change with age. As we move through our late 20s, our bodies produce less natural collagen and so, over time the likelihood that our skin starts to show lines and signs of age is normal. This is a beautiful, natural process, and there is a lot to said for ‘growing old gracefully’. However, in this modern age, there are now easily accessible options to reduce this skin ageing process. We can all agree that facial aesthetics is becoming increasingly popular. It’s not uncommon for the modern young woman to have had work done. Women, and increasingly men are ‘starting young’ to delay the ageing process and reduce the impact of deep creases in the future. 34

Marie-Louise prides herself on treating each patient individually, with sensitivity and care. Successful restoration, as with all works of art, is a highly professional and skilled procedure. “Balance and proportion are key to achieve a natural appearance, this requires anatomical understanding” says Marie-Louise. When treated as a patient rather than a customer, you receive professional advice under technical expertise and the product choice will be specific to your needs. Marie-Louise says, “As a medical professional my concern is first and foremost for the health and well-being of my patients. If I believe that there is no benefit to be gained from a specific procedure, rest assured I will be open and honest with my advice.” She continues, “To safeguard the health and well-being of my patients I use only high-quality clinically approved and licensed products. I am a firm believer in less is more, a subtle approach should be taken.”

But it’s a growing concern; that people aren’t taking the necessary precautions before choosing to have work done. The industry has changed with unqualified beauty salons offering services of botox and fillers. Family Go Live has been in touch with one of Liverpool’s leading cosmetic professionals, Dr Marie-Louise, of Duthie Dental @ The Oral Health Practice, who is currently celebrating 10 years in the field of advanced facial aesthetics.

Marie-Louise has extensive knowledge of the facial anatomy, qualifying as a Dental Surgeon in 2002 and completing professional training in Facial Aesthetics at the Royal Society of Medicine and the Royal College of Physicians in 2008. Following on from this she extended her knowledge and experience by embarking on a postgraduate diploma course at UCLAN achieving a distinction in facial aesthetics at level 7. Facial Aesthetic procedures are carried out in Marie-Louise’s own surgery; a discreet, clinical environment with strict crossinfection controls and medical protocols in place. Marie-Louise supports “The Safety in Beauty campaign” and advises you should only use an experienced medically qualified injector.
