A national survey of 1,000 parents of children aged between 0-16, commissioned by 4Children - a national charity for children and families - found that of those parents paying for childcare, almost a fifth of parents (18%) are considering reducing their hours at work or giving up their job altogether because of the financial strain.

More than a quarter (28%) admitted that they would have to cut back on treats in order to pay their childcare costs, while another 16% admitted that they would have to cut back on essentials over the next six months. Unsurprisingly, almost three quarters (73%) of the parents surveyed, called on political parties to offer them more help with the cost of childcare, with 62% believing it should be an election priority.

Childcare: Are you getting what you’re entitled to? Rachel Prayle, nursery manager at Botanic Lodge nursery, explains what help is available for parents when it comes to childcare… “Many parents don’t realise that all three and four-year-olds in England are eligible to 570

hours of free early education or childcare per year. In practice, this is usually taken as 15 hours per week for 38 weeks of the year. “This help can be used to pay for childcare in a variety of settings. It can be used in nursery schools; nurseries attached to schools; nursery classes’ children’s centres; childminders; Sure Start Children’s Centres and some playgroups and pre-schools. “It’s also worth remembering that depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for further support. For example, full time students who are eligible for student finance can receive up to £150.23 per week if they have one child under 15, or up to £257.55 if they have two or more children.” “Parents/carers can have the choice of just using their free entitlement with no extra cost or they can choose to pay a top up if more hours of childcare is needed. Some parents are not aware that the 2, 3 and 4 year old free entitlement can be used in private nurseries and feel that they have to attend the school nursery to guarantee their place in reception at school age. This is not the case and does not jeopardise their school place. I would encourage all parents who are not yet claiming their free entitlement to contact their local nursery for more information.“

Recent guidance published by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) suggests that women thought to have a low risk of complications during child birth would be best served by giving birth either in their own home, or in a midwife-led unit.

NICE has said that the new guidance isn’t about pushing women to have home or midwife-led births if they are reluctant, rather it is about empowering women to choose the way they would like to give birth. Managing the appeals process ... If you’ve got your heart set on a particular infant school for your child, it can be distressing to learn that your application for a place wasn’t successful. However, the good news is that you can still appeal. Here’s our 101 on the process: When can you appeal?

You can still appeal if you feel that: the admission arrangements were not properly followed; you have grounds to believe that the admission criteria was not legal or if you think the decision to refuse your child a place was not reasonable. What happens next?

Once your appeal has been received and processed, the ‘admission authority’ for the school (usually the school itself, or the local council) will set a day for the appeal hearing. Appeals must be heard within 40 school days of the deadline for making an appeal, and parents must be given at least 10 days’ notice before the appeal takes place. What happens at the appeal hearing?

At the appeals hearing, there will be an independent panel made up of three people. The admission authority will explain why your application was turned down, and you will be able to explain why you think your child should be admitted.

If your application for an infant school place was refused on the grounds that the class has already reached its 30-pupil capacity, then the appeal panel can only look at the lawfulness of the admissions arrangements, and whether a mistake was made in not offering the child a place. If your child was not admitted on grounds other than capacity, the panel will then have to ascertain if the admission criteria were legal, and followed properly. If this is not the case, then your appeal will be upheld. However, if the admissions criteria is deemed to be fair, your child may still be offered a place if your reasons for wanting your child to be admitted outweigh the school’s reasons for not admitting another child. You will receive the panel’s decision in writing within five school days. What if I’m not successful?

Unfortunately, a panel’s decision can only be overturned by a court. You can complain to the Education Funding Agency about the way an appeal was carried out, but you are not entitled to complain about the decision itself. However, if there’s a change in your personal circumstances which could affect the decision (e.g. a house move), then you may have the right to appeal again.

Private tutors a must-have for grammar school... In an ideal world, all it would take to get into a selective secondary school is raw ability and an ability to keep a clear head during the entrance exam. In reality, many parents are seeking just a little extra help to ensure that their children make that all important grade. New research from the Institute of Education (IOE) showed that many parents are boosting their child’s chance of a place in a grammar school by hiring a private tutor to help give them the edge.

Judith Ireson, currently Emerita Professor of Psychology in Education, IOE said, “One of the key factors is that tuition gives these pupils confidence and helps calm down pre-exam nerves.” “Parents may see private tutoring as a rational way to help their children perform well in the entrance exams for schools of their choice.” But she warned that parents should themselves be selective about the tutor they hire, adding: “Parents should be aware that there is no regulation of tutors in this country. They should seek recommendations and check that tutors have relevant qualifications and experience.”

It showed that as many as 7 out of 10 children who gain a place in grammar school have had some form of private tutoring to help ensure they performed well in specific exams. The researchers found that private tutors are typically used to help children with entrance exams, such as verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests as well as helping children boost their English and Maths skills. Generally, children had tutors for between one and three terms, although some children continued for more than a year. The majority (67%) received one-to-one tutorials and the remainder were tutored as part of a small group. However, the IOE found that 6% continued to have private tutoring in the first year of secondary school, suggesting that the main reason children were having this additional support was simply to get them through their chosen school’s entrance exams rather than in order to provide ongoing educational support.

Justin & Friends: Mr Tumble’s Circus – that sounds like fun! What inspired you to give this tour a circus theme? Well, on the first Justin & Friends show (in 2013) we themed the show around Justin’s House and this time around we wanted Mr Tumble to play a bigger part. So we thought that given that Mr Tumble is a clown, we’d give the new production a circus theme.

Will we be seeing any special circus acts in Mr Tumble’s Circus? Yes, we’re certainly going to have some speciality acts – lots of juggling and balancing as well as a few surprises... Which of your CBeebies friends will we be meeting on this tour? We’ve got lots of characters from my other shows as well; Robert the Robot will no doubt be following me around trying to tidy up after me; Little Monster will be causing mayhem; from Gigglebiz we’ll have Arthur Sleep and Keith Fitt amongst others. And let’s not forget the Tumble family! I believe Aunt Polly will also be making an appearance. All in all, a huge array of CBeebies favourites.

Do you need special equipment? On photos and videos you see of people taking part in water based activities, they are usually wearing a lot of different apparel. However, all you really need are clothes that you don’t mind getting wet! Ideally, a tracksuit and a pair of trainers or wetsuit boots most watersports centres usually provide any extras you may need, including helmets and buoyancy aids.

We’d heard great things about the newly opened O’Connors Bar and Grill at the Sefton Park Hotel, and were really looking forward to see what the fuss was all about! I visited on a Friday night with a relative for some meaty delights, and we weren’t disappointed.

The building actually overlooks the park, with the best of both worlds in terms of dining out. There’s a warm and welcoming atmosphere as soon as you walk in, with a cosy bar on the right, and the chilled restaurant on the left - an ideal setting for a special occasion. We were welcomed by our friendly host, and shown to our table to peruse the menu. First, we opted for the nachos to share, topped with guacamole, salsa, sour cream, and melted cheese. There was definitely enough for two people…we couldn’t even finish them as we wanted to save room for rest of our meal!

also visited before, and the staff were so helpful in terms of trying to accommodate allergies like coeliac disease, which can be difficult sometimes when trying to find a place to eat. We’d definitely return in future to the restaurant – it was good value for money, which you’ll appreciate even more when you tuck into the fabulous food, and there’s something for everyone. You could even extend your visit into a short stay, as there are a range of cosy hotel rooms too!

For our mains, I chose the lamp rump, which came with fondant potato, glazed veg and mint jus. It was delicious! The meat was cooked to perfection, and the whole dish was very tasty! My sister chose the chicken and BBQ ribs, which was served with crispy french fries and sauces. As you can imagine, it was a little messy, but she definitely enjoyed it! We were so full that we couldn’t quite manage a dessert each, so we opted for the chocolate brownie to share. This was accompanied with salted caramel ice cream, and fresh raspberries, which complimented each other perfectly. Overall, we loved the experience of a night out at O’Connor’s. The staff were warm, welcoming, and attentive, the food was delicious, and the setting was calm, candlelit and chilled. Relatives of ours have

FOODIE FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY Liverpool Food and Drink Festival’s brand new spring event is set to bring foodie fun for all the family to the beautiful Sefton park this Easter Bank Holiday, 5th-6th April. The festival will transform the park into an Easter playground, with a jam-packed schedule of interactive activities, from a Mad Hatter’s tea party, inflatable village and den making to story-telling and a classic egg and spoon race. The little ones can head over to the children’s zone for a whole host of chocolate workshops, where they can take part in tasting sessions with Ministry of Chocolate, get stuck into some chocolate making and learn all lots of fun chocolate facts. Little Foot will bring a taste of the outback to the festival with mini bushtucker trials, edible bugs and unique adventure sessions where visitors can learn exciting skills to survive in the wild. Come along to meet the giant Claire House cuddly bear, join in the face painting fun and take part in puppet making classes with Mr Wolf Collective. Glitterarti Parties will also host a Mad Hatters tea party in our very own Family Go Live tent where children can enjoy a magical tea party experience with Alice, the white Rabbit, Mad Hatter Mickey and Queen of Hearts Minnie. During each one-hour sitting the little ones can have fun with balloon modelling, dance at the mini disco, play with glitter tattoos and tuck into a tasty snack box (tickets for the party must be pre-booked online).

For youngsters looking for something a bit more adventurous, there will be a massive inflatable village. Games include a jungle run obstacle course, circus bouncy castle, pulsar laser quest, crazy golf and inflatable slide, to name a few. Not to mention the bubble zorbs which are bound to make for a memorable day out, plus plenty of traditional fun fair stalls (a small charge applies to inflatable games). While the children have lots of fun and games to enjoy, adults can take part in floristry, planting and chocolate demonstrations and masterclasses, browse the field sampling flavours from around the world, or head over to the relaxing bar for a well-deserved glass of fizz. There will be an abundance of treats on offer in the street food, restaurant and producer areas across the field. Packing up? Fresh Start? Top tips for a big house move If you’ve ever moved house, the day will probably live long in the memory as one of the most hectic! You might be packing up and moving continents, or just upsizing to around the corner, but it pays to be organised… Be ruthless in what you take Imagine you’ve got a bag allowance like when you go on a flight; you don’t want your new home to be cluttered as soon as you move in. Be decisive and use the occasion as an excuse to throw away what you realistically won’t need in the future.

It’s nicer to neuter Neutering isn’t just a way of preventing your pet’s amorous attentions being directed at Aunt Mabel’s legs, or a way of ensuring you don’t have a host of hopeful canine suitors queuing up outside your door when Fluffy is in heat - it’s also one of the best things you can do for your pet’s health and wellbeing. Penny Lott, Clinic Director from White Cross Vets in Gateacre tells us more: “Unless you’re serious about using a pet for breeding purposes, the advantages of having your pet spayed far outweigh the disadvantages. A spayed pet has fewer medical problems, lives longer on average, does not add to the pet overpopulation and I feel makes them a better member of the family. “For example, neutered male dogs are less likely to try to escape from the home, meaning they’re less likely to go missing or get hit by a car. They’re also much less likely to either be aggressive to other dogs, or be the target of aggression from other dogs. And as if that’s not enough, it also seriously reduced the risk of prostate disease and some cancers.” It’s not just male dogs who can benefit from neutering. Penny continues: “It’s not commonly known, but female dogs are also at risk of breast cancer. Spaying a female can greatly reduce this risk. It can also reduce the chance of them getting an infection of the womb called pyometra, something that can be fatal in older dogs. And of course, pregnancy and birth is risky to mums in any species.”

Sometimes feel like your dog is taking you for a walk when it should be the other way around? Here are some quick tips on mastering the daily dog walk: 1.Take the lead – You are the “pack leader”, so you therefore control your dog. It’s also safer when approaching busy roads. 2. Try a different route – Dogs often like to be out in the country, so a trail or path that is well off the road could be perfect for some fresh air. And there’s no need to worry about how your pet will cope with the procedure, says Penny. She explains: “Pets receive a full nose to tail health check beforehand to make sure they’re in tip top condition to start with.

3. Provide a reward – They’re going to be hungry after burning all of that energy! A nice treat could be given to round off a settled routine.

The routine procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic and pets are well enough to go home the same day with pain relief. Pets heal quickly so whilst we recommend restricting their physical activity, such as jumping, for a few days they will soon be back to their normal self.” But for Penny, the biggest benefit of neutering is not for the individual dog but for ‘dogkind’. She adds: “Put simply, the UK just has too many unwanted dogs. Our rescue centres are full to the brim, in many cases they rely on the generosity of volunteers who struggle to cope with the vast number of abandoned cats and dogs. Neutering your pet will make sure you aren’t personally contributing to this problem.” She concludes “If you are unsure I recommend you phone your local vets and book a free pre-neuter consultation, they’ll talk you through the pros and cons and answer any questions you may have.”
